what to write on license field
I'm having trouble uploading a photograph, I don't understand the licenses. do I have to get one or just write a code. It's a simple photo I took and I don't mind if anyone uses It. so I dont really care for the license. What should I write in that field? (201.175.165.170 15:30, 29 July 2016 (UTC)isoberthamuniz)
- @201.175.165.170: When you take a photograph, you automatically have certain rights to restrict how other people can use your photograph. Wikimedia Commons requires that you give up some of those rights (if you want to share your image here) so that people can use your image more easily - you do that by choosing to apply a license to your photo. Good choices for you are probably either {{CC-BY-4.0}}, which requires people to credit you when they use your image, or {{CC-Zero}}, which allows them to use your image freely without crediting you. Once you make this choice, you can just add the corresponding code to the image page. BMacZero (talk) 00:58, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Thumbs have horizontal lines
- This section was archived on a request by: Fouky (talk) 23:53, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
I uploaded this file, and the thumbnails seem to have varying numbers of black lines in them that are invisible in the full-sized image. Only the full-sized and 413x480 version seem to be free of these defects. I've never seen this before on other images I've uploaded. The image was edited with GIMP to delete the extraneous background, but I've done this with other images without having this problem. Douglas W. Jones (talk) 20:32, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- I just uploaded 3 pictures (Intel C4004 b.jpg, Intel D4004.jpg and Intel P4004.jpg) and have exactly the same problem for the 3. A few hours ago, I uploaded another picture without problem. Maybe the problem just happens since a few minutes ago. I hope this is the right place to report such bugs. Fouky (talk) 20:50, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- The same for me with this pic; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Buildings_in_Hamburg-Winterhude#/media/File:Villa_Bellevue_60.jpg
- All pics I´ve upload before were o.k. I think, it´s a technical problem. Thanks for your help, I don´t want to have the pic like that, please delete it for me.Pauli-Pirat (talk) 22:05, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Bug reported here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T142638 . Self-quote that may give some informations: many of the new files seem to be affected as well: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:NewFiles (interestingly, we don't see any horizontal line in most of these thumbnails, but if you choose randomly a picture, the bigger thumbnail depicted in the file's page will likely have these horizontal lines). Hope that it will be fixed soon. Fouky (talk) 22:12, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
- Problem solved :D! Thank you very much! (some thumbnails may still be broken but should be repaired soon as a maintenance script is running now) Fouky (talk) 23:53, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Anderi Ciontu
I have uploaded AndreiCiontu.jpg on ro.wiki and i have used on page "Andrei Ciontu", but now is blocked. I do not understand why. The photo was provided by the person, as he was in life, to process and use. PheonixRo (talk) 12:31, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- You may wish to discuss on ro:Discuție:Andrei Ciontu, as discussion here is only for assistance with uploading media to Commons and not usage or specific practices of the other wikis (all which have different rules for their communities). Upon glancing at Andrei Ciontu article, it appears the media is still in use; but was some functionality issue with how template behaves on ro.wiki. --dsprc (talk) 07:07, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
Upload photograph to Matt and Kim's Commons
To whom it may concern,
Yesterday I uploaded a photograph that I took of Matt and Kim at Hangout Music Festival on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Although, it looks like it's not in the commons section of their wikimedia page. Did I upload it right? It's not showing up there.
Also, on my first try I didn't properly name the file or give a proper description. Both file name and description should be the below.
"Matt and Kim at Hangout Music Festival on Saturday, May 17, 2014 Photograph by Taylor Hill.jpeg"
Please can you upload or help me upload and rename the file?
Thank you so much.

- Hi, it looks like you uploaded the image correctly. The description looks fine, too. To insert an uploaded image in an article, use something like , which I did for this paragraph. The image will be inserted to the right of the paragraph where you put this code. You can still edit the image description by clicking on the image and clicking "edit" on the image page. --rimshottalk 20:19, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

- You wouldn't normally upload an article. The usual way would be to write an article on Wikipedia and illustrate it with images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. See en:Wikipedia:Your first article for the first part and Commons:First steps for the second. --rimshottalk 09:15, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Anyone can explain why??????????????????? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganalok (talk • contribs) 02:07, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Morganalok:
- You must understand COM:LICENSING.
- You must prove that you are who you claim to be by following COM:OTRS.
- Regards, --Lacrymocéphale (talk) 06:34, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Morganalok: Wiki accounts are anonymous, inherently. We do not know that you are the copyright holder, we know that you are some person claiming to be the copyright holder. If a work you own, and uploaded, was deleted for copyright concerns you need to send a verification of permissions per COM:OTRS, and they will request undeletion when it's processed. Reventtalk 06:36, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- Also, you are typically not the copyright holder of photographs that you merely appear in. The copyright holder is normally the photographer, unless the photographer is an employee of yours, or there is a written contract or copyright transfer agreement. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:42, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Lacrymocéphale: and @LX:
- Thank you so much for your reply. I understand now and I'm now drafting an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganalok (talk • contribs) 15:37, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

- celso - NY Statue of Liberty (4066553303)

I'm looking to refresh the images on en:Statue of Liberty but I'm not happy with the current choice in Category:Statue of Liberty. Thanks! AnotherNewAccount (talk) 22:15, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
- You can do it via Upload Wizard - there's an option in there to "Share Images from Flickr". I've gone ahead and uploaded the images though - see File:Statue of Liberty - 4621961395.jpg, File:NY Statue of Liberty - 4066553303.jpg and File:NY Statue of Liberty - 4067353996.jpg. Wait time?
When preparing a workshop for possible Wiki Loves Monuments participants, I remembered that "when I was young" (in Wikipedia) I had to wait for 4 days before I could upload images. I don't remember whether it was only Wikipedia or whether it alos applied to Commons. Is there (still) such a wait time for new users? It would be fatal for the workshop because we intended the particippants to create an account and upload images on the same day. I couldn't find any hint in the FAQ or the help pages, that's why I'm asking here. --Bjs (talk) 19:59, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- That still applies on English Wikipedia (not sure about others), but not here. You can see which rights regular logged-in users have at Special:ListGroupRights#user. Here on Commons, it includes
upload
. —LX (talk, contribs) 23:14, 19 August 2016 (UTC)- Thank you for your answer. The link to Special:ListGroupRights was very helpful. File from Flickr
Hello, an Italian commoner on our village pump asked why this photograph can't be uploaded in spite of being properly licenced (by Financial Times, thus not a case of flickr laundry). In fact I too attempted to upload it just to perform a test and the Wizard told me that such a file had previously been uploaded on this Wiki but it was not showed me where's the duplicate one. It happens with that file only. Anyone has experienced anything similar? Thanks .-- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 22:06, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Blackcat: Can you take a screenshot of the error message you're seeing and upload it somewhere? I get an error message that points me to File:Boris_Johnson_Leo_Johnson.jpg when I try uploading that file using UploadWizard: https://i.imgur.com/YmdSnQI.png Matma Rex (talk) 00:41, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, File:Boris Johnson Leo Johnson.jpg is an exact duplicate (not just the 'same image', but the identical file). If the Italian version of the Upload Wizard doesn't show that, it should probably be fixed to do so. Reventtalk 05:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Works for me with &uselang=it too. Matma Rex (talk) 09:00, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Ok, problem solved then. I errounesly assumed that anything about Boris Johnson had to be sought in the category:Boris Johnson but apparently the picture hadn't been categorized since its upload thus I couldn't know whether an exact duplicate existed already. Having found the duplicate is clear why I got the error message. That said, as pointed above, the lack of existing filename in the Italian interface of UploadWizard is a fix that should be fixed. Thanks to Matma Rex for taking time to check the problem. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Blackcat: Could you upload a screenshot of the error message you're seeing, that doesn't mention the existing file name? As far as I can tell, it works correctly, also in Italian. Perhaps you're talking about a different tool than Special:UploadWizard? Matma Rex (talk) 16:56, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, of course, Matma Rex, here you are! -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:03, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Blackcat: Aha, I see it now. Since you were talking about Flickr, I assumed you're using the "Share images from Flickr" function of UploadWizard (see Commons:Upload Wizard/Flickr, currently only available for admins and license reviewers). But it looks like you're just downloading the image from Flickr to your computer, then uploading it normally.
- You were probably running into phab:T130564, which causes UploadWizard not to receive any warnings about the uploaded file if it was bigger than 5 MB (and this file is 6.98 MB), including the warning that the file is a duplicate of an existing one. We'd only get the warnings when you tried to publish the file (note how the error in my screenshot is displayed on the "Upload" step, while the one in yours is on the "Describe" step), and it looks like the error handling there is incomplete (since I guess it's not supposed to happen).
- I incidentally fixed that just two days ago and the fix should be deployed to Wikimedia wikis next week (on Wednesday to Commons). It should resolve this problem too. Matma Rex (talk) 20:15, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for the collaboration. ad maiora -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 21:26, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Cannot upload my own picture
Dear all, I have tried to upload a picture on: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_invasiver_gebietsfremder_Arten_von_unionsweiter_Bedeutung?veaction=edit
However, I got error messages again and again. One was called Wiki Media Cross error, I believe. I then tried again and the message was again that an error occured and that there is something wrong with the file. Any ideas? JK Zoo (talk) 10:10, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi JK Zoo! I see from Special:AbuseLog/1398939 that you encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. An 816×459 pixel image is quite small (73×41 mm on my 15" display) and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. (It's about 1.6% of the standard resolution of my camera, for example.) If you did indeed personally create this photograph, why is it so small? —LX (talk, contribs) 15:08, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your reply. I totally understand your policy in this regard, especially as I just newly registered yesterday to add text and a picture to the above website. I did indeed decrease the size of the picture taken with my mobile phone before trying to upload it as I thought since it was an web-site upload, a web-site reduction in size would be appropriate?! However, I did later on try to upload the originally sized picture (3MB) after sending it from my mobile to my computer but again the system refused. Shall I try to directly upload from my mobile phone? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JK Zoo (talk • contribs) 10:29, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- @JK Zoo: You should be able to upload the file directly to Commons, using the Upload Wizard. The filter only affects cross-wiki uploads. Please upload full size images, though, as they are more widely usable... the wiki will automatically create thumbnails of the needed size when used on an article. Which public domain copyright tag to use?
I am interested in uploading a picture of the statue, Fighter of the spirit, that is on the Minneapolis Institute of Art website. The image is listed as public domain and is dated 1928. I have looked over the choices for copyright tag on the upload wizard, and I'm not sure which one to use. Leschnei (talk) 15:44, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Would {{PD-old-75}} be appropriate? Leschnei (talk) 15:46, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Leschnei: This was actually a bit interesting, in that looking shows this isn't the original statue, it's a replica. The statue was made in 1928, for a church in Kiel, Germany. The Nazis then sawed it in half, and someone hid the parts through WWII. The museum obtained this copy in 1959. As a work originally published in Germany, it had a 70-year copyright, and became PD in 2008.
- Unfortunately, you can't upload this particular photo, however.... while the statue is in the public domain, the photo itself appears to have been taken by the museum in 2006 (per metadata on another copy) and is itself copyrighted. You need to find a freely licensed photo, or take one. Sorry.
- If you do, however, the license for the statue itself will be what you suggested, or {{PD-old-auto |deathyear=1938}}, which is a self-updating version. Reventtalk 19:40, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- I found the story interesting too, which is why I wanted to add it to the museum site. I'll have to contact my network of underground Minneapolis photographers and put them to work! Thanks for your help!! Leschnei (talk) 00:19, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello still waiting to hear back on two images which were deleted.
First File: "History_of_Thought.png", it has been deleted from Commons by INeverCry because: No permission since 22 July 2016.)
Second File: "Greek_school_by_ziggyfin.png", it has been deleted from Commons by INeverCry because: Copyright violation, see c:Commons:Licensing - c:OTRS permission from Reggie Graham ("ziggyfin") required.)
I would like to get these files put back up. I wrote and storyboarded these comics. I commissioned an artist,Reggie Graham ("ziggyfin"), to create them for me with the understanding that they were to be used in the public domain. When I added the first one, it asked it I owned the work (if it was mine--can't recall the wording but you know it) to which I said, correctly, that the work was mine in both senses--that it was my property because I bought it and it was mine because it was first my intellectual property. Were I erred, it seems, is indicating in the description that it was original artwork by Reggie. I did this to ensure that he got credit for his art, which is brilliant. A notice showed up on the page indicating that OTRS was required so I asked Reggie to do that because whomever flagged it didn't believe me. fair. He did the email method. I then uploaded a second file, greek school, and Reggie did the process again. I sent you a copy of that email. That file was deleted almost immediately.
These two illustrations are important elements of the chapter which is important to the book. I request that they be put back up OR let me know what we need to do to effect this. Thanks Dwt2 (talk) 05:32, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Picture Upload Cross-wiki upload filter
Hey Everybody! Can someone be that kind and tell me what´s the matter when i´m trying to upload the picture, please?
Cross-wiki upload filter
That´s what it says the problem is..
Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Menneskerone (talk • contribs) 16:48, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Menneskerone! You encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. An 800×800 pixel image is quite small and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. If you personally created this picture, why is it so small? —LX (talk, contribs) 17:53, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
"Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file." (uploadscripted)
@Matma Rex: I had a similar "badparams"-error while trying to upload a .tif file (3 times in a row) just now. After downloading the file from an external server, and trying a fourth time, I got a different error:
Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file.
Will try again after scheduled deployment on coming Wednesday 24 August 2016 (as per your message above). (Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen (talk) 05:19, 22 August 2016 (UTC))
- @Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen: I looked up the errors for your upload session and the real error message is "This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. See the FAQ for more information.". You won't be able to upload it even if the message is shown correctly (I think this is a case of phab:T32095, which I'm planning to work on). See COM:FAQ#What does the upload error This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. mean? (I think it works almost the same for JPG and TIF files). Matma Rex (talk) 16:03, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Matma Rex: COM:FAQ#What does the upload error This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. mean? advises to use exiftool. What's interesting to me is that I already used exiftool on the image before uploading, namely using the commands "exiftool -all= -CommonIFD0= *.tif" and "exiftool -all= *.tif" to strip all the EXIF metadata from the image ... I thus don't have a clue how to delete any remaining "HTML"-metadata or where it would be located? ... I guess I'll just re-save the image using an image editor? (Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen (talk) 17:00, 22 August 2016 (UTC))
- @Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen: Hmm, interesting. Re-saving may help. If it doesn't, email the file to me (matma.rex@gmail.com, it's okay even if it's big) and I'll try to see what's up with it. Matma Rex (talk) 17:04, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- Matma Rex: As I and Rillke have noted in the past, the way
detectScript()
is implemented is incredibly naïve and prone to both spurious errors and to missing real errors. The odds of encountering files that happen to contain one of the several very short byte sequences that are considered bad within its first 1024 bytes is probably fairly significant when dealing with Commons-sized data sets. And someone who really wanted to be nefarious would just need to make sure that there's at least 1024 bytes of correct metadata before the script code. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:30, 22 August 2016 (UTC)- @LX: I am not familiar with all of this code, but checking only the beginning for binary files is probably intentional. The purpose of this part of the function is not to disallow files with HTML in metadata, but rather to disallow files which can be used to trigger file type autodetection in old versions of Internet Explorer and Safari, and the XSS attacks that this allows for. I don't recommend https://doc.wikimedia.org/ for viewing code, as it strips code comments – rather look at the unabridged version e.g. here: [1]. Matma Rex (talk) 18:01, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

- @Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen: Thanks, I've gotten your email. This is actually a bug in the code that is only apparent when using chunked uploads (a method where big files are uploaded divided in smaller "chunks", which makes it possible to upload files bigger than the server can ordinarily receive, and which increases reliability on poor networks since each chunk can be resubmitted separately): see phab:T143610 for the technical details.
- The file is perfectly fine and can be uploaded with one of the following ways:
- If you don't mind Special:Upload's interface, just use it to upload this file. It should go through with no problems. (Other upload tools may or may not work, depending on whether they use chunked uploads.)
- If you want to use UploadWizard, then (before uploading anything) open your browser's developer console and copy-paste the following:
mw.UploadWizard.config.chunkSize = 100 * 1024 * 1024
(this effectively disables chunked uploading temporarily by setting the chunk size to 100 MB). Then proceed with the upload as normal.
- Sorry about the inconvenience. Since this bug is in security-sensitive code, it can take a little while before I can get one of WMF's security experts to review my proposed fix, but I'll get it fixed at some point. Matma Rex (talk) 21:07, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Matma Rex: Thanks, I'm very impressed that you were able to locate the cause of the problem, as well as to provide a solution (using Special:Upload did the trick for me). In the Phabricator page which you mentioned (phab:T143610), I can note that you were able to determine the text-string "<PrE' at offset 10332876" as being the exact cause of the problem. Might I just ask how (using what software or what type of software) you were able to locate that text-string within the file please? (Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen (talk) 22:31, 22 August 2016 (UTC))
- @Vincent Mia Edie Verheyen: Mostly I just enabled debug logging in my local installation of MediaWiki ($wgDebugLogFile config option), since the function that produces these errors writes some more details to the log. It logged "found something that may make it be mistaken for html: <pre". I opened the file in a hex editor () and searched for "<pre" to verify, and then I just copied the offset where it was found. It just randomly appears in the middle of the image data. Matma Rex (talk) 00:51, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Subir fotos
The system does not allow me to upload my photos. It says: "Make the title most significant". Thanks. El sistema no me permite subir una foto. Me dice: "haz el título más significativo" y no me permite subir las fotos. Gracias.--Sürrell (talk) 17:40, 25 August 2016 (UTC)

SVG file upload test
I would like to test an SVG file for correct rendering prior to upload. I previously used a tool written by Jarry1250, but due to a computer failure lost the link, and am unable to find it again. Can someone please advise the name of the tool or a link to it, thank you. Summerdrought (talk) 05:00, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
- There's Commons:Commons SVG Checker, which is in Beta and Commons:SVG Check, its predecessor. --rimshottalk 07:23, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you very much Rimshot, this may be marked resolved. Summerdrought (talk) 07:50, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Reversion is not working for me.
I keep trying to revert this file:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kinsey_Scale.svg
given that it is not an accurate representation of the original Kinsey scale. However, each time I do it it seems to undo it and claim that I did it with my own account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihateirony (talk • contribs) 18:49, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- You successfully reverted it – all seven times. You probably just need to shift-reload to stop seeing the version cached by your browser. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:20, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Military photos
I am a historian with a veteran's group. We have a few Facebooks pages that are well moderated and a lot of members have uploaded photos that are worth preserving. I would encourage them to upload photos here for preservation, but I fear many will have issues creating an account and going through the licensing process.
My thought is to create a Facebook group specifically for uploading photos. Each member would fill out a simple form certifying that they created the photos and will release them under CCA. Then I can curate the photos and then upload them myself, linking to the member page. --21lima (talk) 21:03, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
- I don't really see how any of that would make anything easier. Registering an account here is far easier than registering a Facebook account. Literally all you have to provide is the username and password that you'd like. And the upload process here is basically filling out a simple form certifying that you created whatever you're uploading and that you're willing to publish it under a free license. Facebook also tends to strip off useful metadata and do weird things with color profiles, so direct uploads are greatly preferred. —LX (talk, contribs) 08:49, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
- I was hoping to curate images by selecting by relevance, doing a bit of cleanup and uploading into appropriate categories. Metadata would be the scanner used for analog photos. At 58 I am a younger member and have been an IT professional for decades. I will see how it goes. --21lima (talk) 18:21, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Historischer Siedlungs-Neubauprospekt geeignet?
