Photo uploading

hello! i am vyom, i need some help regarding uploading photos in 'commons'. i love to take photographs of nature and i upload them on my Facebook page with my own logo. Will that be okay if i upload photos with my logo in it or i have to upload photos without any logo in 'Commons' ?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vjflash (talk • contribs) 09:19, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

@Vjflash: See Commons:Watermarks. The short answer is: we prefer that you leave the logo off because it makes it easier for people to use your image, but it's not required unless the logo is intrusive. BMacZero (talk) 21:16, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Fleets

Hi there I have uploaded photos that have the [cc 3.0] image on Picasa. I am looking for assistance as to why this is insufficient for use under that license and why they would require the direct permission of the photographer through OTRS. Fleets (talk) 08:14, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

It appears that there is an issue between Picasa and Google, with Picasa displaying licence and google not.Fleets (talk) 09:42, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Photo upload

Hello,

I uploaded a photo of a Khachkar on Wikipedia a few hours ago- link below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khachkar#/media/File:Khachkar_Beirut.jpg

The photo depicts an original Khachkar that my family ordered custom-made to be placed in Sourp Kevork church in Beirut. The inauguration of the Khachkar took place a couple of weeks ago so it is relatively fresh. Although I can see the file uploaded on Wikipedia's main Khachkar gallery page when I'm logged in (DanceDiva1), the photo does not appear to the public when I search for the page anonymously.

Can you kindly advise? Christine

I see your photo on that page now. Perhaps it was a temporary issue. Wikipedia pages are heavily cached to improve the site's performance, and this sometimes results in slightly outdated content being shown to users. Matma Rex (talk) 13:42, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

How to upload a 3D file

A while ago I uploaded an image of Stonehenge: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stonehenge_render.jpg. I would also like to upload the 3D object that I used to render this image. I saved out an .obj version but it seems wikimedia does not accept .obj files. Can 3D files be uploaded to wikimedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlert~commonswiki (talk • contribs) 09:34, 7 July 2016‎ (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not allow this file format. There is a project, however, that aims to provide an archive for source files of media uploaded to Commons: Commons Archive. You can use the {{Commons Archive}} on the image page to show where you have uploaded the source file. --rimshottalk 13:49, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Rules regarding logos created by an individual who uploads it on behalf of an NGO

I have a logo that I've created for an NGO in Sweden that I wish to upload to accompany their Wikipage. I'm not sure how I should upload it since I created it but at the same time the ownership of the logo belongs to the organisation. What are the rules regarding that for Wikimedia Commons? Kunamesenpai (talk) 04:53, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kunamesenpai! Please see Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which includes information on this topic. LX (talk, contribs) 14:38, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

Question about uploading a photograph

I have an old photograph of my father's ship's crew from World War II. The original that I have comes from my father's personal photograph collection but was taken by an unknown photographer, perhaps another member of the crew, perhaps an official U.S. Coast Guard photographer. Unknown source. The photograph is from 1944 or 1945. I have a jpeg image of a print of the photograph. I would like to upload it to attach to a Wikipedia article about the ship, the U.S.S. Woonsocket, which is an article already listed on the website. I believe this photo would add to the limited knowledge available about the ship and its service during the war. My Dad is 93 y.o. and the rest of the crew is similarly aged or passed away. Is it OK to upload this photograph from my personal collection? Thanks for your guidance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gelfand55 (talk • contribs) 17:07, 09 July 2016 (UTC)

If there's reason to believe that it was taken by a Coast Guard member/employee in the course of official duties, then it could be used; otherwise probably not... AnonMoos (talk) 04:47, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

How to upload information regarding a file

Hi Team,

I have a question regarding how to upload some information about a file into Wiki, can u please suggest me,? — Preceding unsigned comment added by B H Vishwanath (talk • contribs) 17:21, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

@B H Vishwanath: Information describing a particular file is typed into the file's page. You can do this by clicking the "Edit" tab in the top-right of the page for the file. BMacZero (talk) 19:06, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

Photos I uploaded were deleted

Dear Wikimedia Commons,

I have uploaded photos to Wikimedia Commons to put on Mr Greco Casadesus Wikipedia page (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gr%C3%A9co_Casadesus#cite_note-YV54F-1) and they were all deleted. These photos he himself asked me to put for him on his page, but didn't give me infos about copyright. Because the photos were deleted, I no longer have access to the exact name I had them saved. Here are the approximate titles of the photographs I have uploaded: File:Casadesus_Portrait_NoiretBlanc_large, File:Climb_mixage, File:Krakauer, File:Theatre_aiglon, File:Theatre_avare, File:TroisMousquetaires_Spectacles, File:UCMF_Cannes. Which info do I need to be able to upload photos to his page? Many thanks for your reply.

Regards,

Julie Remy Journalist and Writer lajulesremy@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aramis-france (talk • contribs) 21:35, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

@Aramis-france: You can see your deleted files at Special:Log/Aramis-france. Because these images have been previously published, we can't assume that you have permission to share them. The copyright holder of the images needs to send an e-mail confirming that their permission is given. See Commons:OTRS for more info. Note that Mr. Casadesus may not be the copyright holder of the images if someone else created them on his behalf. BMacZero (talk) 01:02, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

Bug with sequential numbering

The upload wizard has strange behaviour when it is used on an Android smartphone. It always uploads photos in reverse order of filename (and occasionally refuses to preserve order), which messes up sequential numbering. As a suggestion, is it possible to manually arrange (or invert) the order of files before applying sequential numbering? Deryck Chan (talk) 13:56, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

@Deryck Chan: Interesting. We could probably just order the images by file name (currently, we just take them in the order that your browser gives them to us). I filed phab:T140480 about this. Matma Rex (talk) 16:32, 15 July 2016 (UTC)

simple addition to a page

I am no computer expert; just the opposite. All I want to do is add the the subject page "CAPD" a link to page about Center for Policy Assessment and Development, and to create that page. This is a legitimate 30 year old non-profit doing public policy evaluation and deserves an entry. How, in simple terms, do I do this? Thank you, Bob W — Preceding unsigned comment added by Banjerbob (talk • contribs) 18:12, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Bob! Your question seems to be about adding information to Wikipedia. However, you are not on Wikipedia right now. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you're on Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. Problem directing file to a specific category

There is a Category:Janice Lourie. It is a subcategory within digital photography. I just uploaded a file directed to the Janice Lourie category. However it was placed in a special page for my account username Janvermont. Please tell me how in the future to place images in the Janice Lourie category .
File:Looking west from 55 and park1.jpg.
Janvermont (talk) 00:30, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

Don't know what went wrong in the upload wizard, but the current text on the image description page is
[[Category:Digital photography, Category:Janice Lourie]], while it needs to be
[[Category:Digital photography]] [[Category:Janice Lourie]] ... -- 00:37, 21 July 2016 (UTC)~
Actually just the latter, since that's already a subcategory of Category:Digital photography, so placing the photo in both would constitute over-categorization. LX (talk, contribs) 00:42, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
I'm guessing you just pasted "Category:Digital photography, Category:Janice Lourie" into the category field and it was interpreted as a category titled "Digital photography, Category:Janice Lourie" (which is a perfectly valid category name). We could try to do something more to interpret weird inputs (see phab:T119246), but it's hard to define the difference between that and real categories like Category:Mandarin, Florida: History museum. Uploading images with a different format

There is this simple diagram image saved as JPEG, which means that it has compression artefacts and is quite large in size: File:APL2NestedArray.jpg
I made a PNG version, but I do not know how to upload it. If I try to upload it as a new version of the same file, I get told that the MIME type does not match, which I presume means that new versions of an image can only be in the same format. Do I upload the image as a new file? In that case, what kind of information do I have to add?
--Borka223 (talk) 11:45, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

@Borka223: Yes, you have to upload it as a new file, e.g. File:APL2NestedArray.png. Looks like you should add "{{Derived from|APL2NestedArray.jpg}}" to its description when uploading. You also have to release your version under a compatible license, which in this case is very simple, since the file was released into the public domain (so you can choose any license for your work). Не завантажились файли

Підкажіть, будь ласка, чому після завантаження файлів, вони не з'явилися в галереї? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Каїра Федір (talk • contribs) 11:32, 15 May 2016‎ (UTC)

Hi Каїра Федір! I'm sorry for responding in English, but unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Ukranian is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Кнайпа.
It's a little hard to understand your question based on the automatic translation, but I assume you are asking why a file that you uploaded did not get added to some particular gallery. This has to be done manually, because the software can't figure out on its own where you would like it added. LX (talk, contribs) 10:07, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Amanda! I'm sorry for responding in English. I already fixed your upload back in June, but I was hoping that someone who speaks Portuguese would answer. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened. If you'd like further explanation, you might have more luck at Commons:Esplanada, although I see that there are questions with no answers for over a month there as well. It's a little hard to understand your question based on the automatic translation, but the mentioning of some award combined with the {{Wiki Loves Earth 2016}} tags on the files you've uploaded leads me to suspect that your question has something to do with Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2016. You should probably ask the organisers directly. LX (talk, contribs) 10:27, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

filling up upload form

how to enter longitude and latitude for each image i uploaded?.also under the ' categories' column ,i have entered 'global commons media type. A 'x' mark appears and i am asked to give description for the category.? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kattapana (talk • contribs) 16:28, 06 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kattapana! Coordinates should be entered in decimal format. Looking at File:Strange snaelike tree in the forests in idukki.jpg, you seem to have got it right. As for categories, please don't add top-level categories such as Category:Topics to your uploads. Instead, use more specific categories, like Category:Trees in Idukki district. Commons:Categories contains information about how the category structure works and how to navigate it to find appropriate categories. LX (talk, contribs) 10:32, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Photo removed - Help

Hi -

I have a photo uploaded and then removed. I am lost on why it was removed.

The photo is for a footballer, from his Instagram page. I added it to his Wiki page but then it got removed.

What are the right steps I need to do to upload it again?

Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Figo29 (talk • contribs) 10:38, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Figo29! Please don't upload non-free photos that you found on the Internet, and please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload here. LX (talk, contribs) 10:43, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

If the copyright holder (which is normally the photographer – not the subject of the photo) is willing to release the photo under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, then have them follow these instructions to submit a licensing declaration via e-mail to our permission archive. Upload wont appear in a catagory

Hi Wikimedia commons,

Im having problems seeing by uploads in the WFA 2016. It seems like its not registering my category input.

Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Soaring Heights Imagery (talk • contribs) 20:13, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Soaring Heights Imagery! If I understand correctly, the issue is that File:Cathkin Peak, Central Drakenberg.jpg, File:Rough Waters.jpg and File:Hermanus, Voelklip Beach.jpg do not show up in Category:WFA 2016. It looks like you've applied the category correctly, so they should show up there. As noted at the Village Pump, it looks like the site is currently being unusually slow at a few things, including updating the contents of categories. I don't think there is anything you can or need to do, other than to be patient. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 21:57, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
