Unknown date of publication

What do I use as the date of publication when I don't know? The upload wizard requires it. Faceless Enemy (talk) 01:43, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

If you click the pencil button next to the date input field, you should be able to enter something like {{other date|unknown}}, which will render as "unknown" in the reader's selected language. Of course, a publication date is often needed to establish the copyright status. In any case, an approximate date is better than none; see the documentation for the {{other date}} template for information on how to provide this. LX (talk, contribs) 01:53, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

How to delete unneeded duplicate

When I updated 'File:Canadian Checkers gameboard and init config.PNG' today I inadvertently hit the upload button twice. Is there any way a user can delete an unneeded duplicate file from the file history? If not could an admin please do that for me? Thx. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 02:01, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't think it's possible to delete a revision. Administrators can hide revisions if necessary (ask at COM:AN), but I don't think it's such a big deal in this case. BMacZero (talk) 00:08, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Transferring ownership

The owner of an image wishes to transfer the image and its ownership to me so that I may upload it to Commons. What is the statutory draft? Yogesh Khandke (talk) 00:20, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Since you talk about the "owner of an image", I should start by clarifying that physical ownership of an image does not affect its copyright. Copyright is an immaterial right, which is typically held by the creator of the work in question. Only the copyright holder can issue a valid copyright license. See Commons:OTRS for information on how to obtain and document permission for such a license. LX (talk, contribs) 13:33, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Albanian photoes

Hi, I want copy files from Albanian Wikipedia and upload them in the appropriate form for English Wikipedia. Is it everything right with this?Anarkamendi (talk) 12:15, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

As long as the files are covered by a legitimate free license or they're in the public domain and you can provide information to support this, then everything is alright.
That said, you should be aware that the Albanian Wikipedia is in a really, really miserable state of affairs when it comes to media copyright. A quick look at Special:AllPages shows that most of the files there do not meet Commons' requirements (or basic legal requirements for lawful hosting on any Wikimedia Foundation server for that matter).
There are also a large number of files on the Albanian Wikipedia that are tagged as non-free fair use content, for example using sq:Stampa:Logo. Fair use content must not be uploaded to Commons, and since the Albanian Wikipedia does not have an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP), the Albanian Wikipedia is – and has been for the past eight years – operating in direct contravention of wmf:Resolution:Licensing policy by hosting those files.
In short: you can transfer files that meet Commons' requirements with respect to copyright, source and authorship information, but most files on Albanian Wikipedia do not meet these requirements. They should not be transferred here, and should be deleted from the Albanian Wikipedia.

Uploadwizard bug: Duplicate File name warning doesnt show with current version and wizard is slow

The current version of the wizard has several issues when trying to upload a file with an existing name:

  • The duplicate-file-name warning isn't showed
  • The warning WarnungEs wird empfohlen, dass du einige Kategorien für deine hochgeladenen Dateien angibst. Willst du fortfahren, ohne alle Felder auszufüllen? is showed whether the chosen category exists or not.
  • The warning above is acually wrong. It is also showed when trying to upload to a category that is not created at this point (later in my workflow).
  • When saying yes, do it anyhow I end up having a page without submit button
  • The current version of the wizard is rather slow. It looks to me like it waits for server response (and freezing the whole firefox browser including input fields meanwhile).

That was my upload link, if needed: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/special:uploadWizard?campaign=wlm-at&id=109247&descriptionlang=de&description=Bildstock%2C+Bauernkriegs%C3%A4ule --Thomas Ledl (talk) 13:01, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, freezing browsers, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Have you tried another option on Commons:Upload? They tend to be much more reliable. -- Rillke(q?) 15:08, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
actually I am using the wizard a lot and it worked pretty fine for a long period. it doesn't since the release with the annoying error popup (who would still use popups in 2016?) and the misleading green text to enter another language.
Thanks, I have my workaround (another file name).
This entry is for reporting it. hope this is the right place --Thomas Ledl (talk) 15:31, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
There is Commons:Upload Wizard feedback but it's rarely monitored by Upload Wizard's maintainers. Phabricator is Wikimedia's issue tracker and you could bring up each single issue there. It's not that hard to use but you have to be specific and describe how to reproduce the issue step by step. You can log in with your MediaWiki account. Important: Set Projects to UploadWizard and Commons. -- Rillke(q?) 15:47, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

uploading a picture that I've recived a release for from its owner

Under what kind of licence can I upload a picture the owner of which sent me an official release letter, where he stated: Attn..To whom it may concern This is to confrim the release of usage of the image of Micheal Lightman in grey suit in front of yellow marble background. This image is free to be used and posted by any one. signature of the photographer (I have the release in a pdf file with an official header of the photographer) Thank you,--רחלסל (talk) 11:41, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Only the copyright holder can issue a valid license. In this case, they haven't specified any license, and you cannot just make up a selection on their behalf. "Free to be used" is a positive first indication, but it's not nearly specific enough to rely on for hosting here. Please see Commons:OTRS for instructions on how to obtain and submit an appropriate release. LX (talk, contribs) 14:19, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

Stuck on Assembling...

I'm trying to upload a 787MB webm file. The upload went fine (took about 2hrs as expected) but now it has been stuck on "Assembling..." in the upload stage of the upload wizard and has been for a good few hours since. In that time the timer has gone from 6 min remaining to 15 min. Just wonder whether I should leave it and it will finish eventually or it is likely failed and I should restart and try again? Or whether I am doing something wrong or missing something that would make it fail persistently? Thanks. - Wolftick (talk) 21:03, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

For anything bigger than a few 10 MB, I wouldn't trust the Upload Wizard, which is notoriously unreliable. Better to use Rillke's Chunked upload, which rarely fails. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:24, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I added "importScript('User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js');" to User:Wolftick/common.js but couldn't see an "upload (chunked)" link anywhere other than (eventually) noticing it in "edit upload a new version (chunked)" on file pages. This is why I tried the upload wizard to create a new file instead. Again maybe I'm missing something? I'm pretty new to this and not particularly familiar with javascript - Wolftick (talk) 22:33, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
I think the script only works for new versions. So I usually first upload a blank file, and then the real file with the chunked upload script. Example: File:Dushman, 1939.webm. You can use [1] (59 KB). Regards, Yann (talk) 23:02, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you very much. It was a little confusing not having the buttons appear for a new upload like it says on Chunked upload but the work around you described worked a treat. The chunked upload script does indeed seem a lot more robust than the upload wizard. It even recovered from a couple of disconnects. - Wolftick (talk) 20:35, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Uploadig of translated picture.svg to commons

Hi, I'm new to Wikipedia. I've taken only 3 lessons in CZECH senior writing Wikipedia. Using INKSCAPE I have already translated two pictures: Xerographic_photocopy_process_de.svg to Xerographic_photocopy_process_cs.svg and Elektrofotografie-Prozess.svg to Elektrofotografie-Prozess_cs.svg With the help of the instructors I uploaded them to wikimedia commons and then to the CZECH wikiPAGE "Xerografie".

I have also translated another picture: bathtub curve.svg to bathtub curve cs.svg The czech version will be in czech wikipage "Bathtub curve". I NEED YOUR HELP with uploading it to Wikimedia commons.

Thanks and Regards, jurak36 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.220.221.197 (talk • contribs) 18:09, 26 December 2015‎ (UTC)

If you've successfully uploaded File:Xerographic photocopy process cs.svg, then it seems like you already know how to upload, and you haven't specified what exactly you need help with. That said, when you posted this question you weren't logged in. You need to be logged in in order to upload files to Commons, so maybe that's the problem. upload Curriculum vitae as a pdf

Hello, I uploaded a pdf page two days ago, which was deleted by Magog the Ogre with the message not to create out of scope media and pages. I am not quite sure, what I did wrong. I updloaded this page again, giving the page a category name "Curriculum vitae". Is that correct? Thank you for your support. rgds Virtopsianer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Virtopsianer (talk • contribs) 18:51, 12 January 2016‎ (UTC)

Commons is intended to host files of potential educational use in places like Wikipedia. It's not intended for hosting personal files, and files that aren't useful to others can be deleted. See COM:SCOPE for details. BMacZero (talk) 02:16, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
To answer your question, no, reuploading something that was previously deleted was not the correct thing to do. The correct thing to do would have been to first understand why it was deleted. The notice on your talk page explained that with a link to Commons:Project scope. If, after reading that, you didn't think the deletion was correct, requesting undeletion would have been the correct thing to do. LX (talk, contribs) 19:49, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

David John Edward Ingram

I would like to upload an entry about my father David John Edward Ingram (please see below): I also have a licence from the National Portrait Gallery to use two photographic portraits of my father...

Extended content

David John Edward Ingram

Born on 6th April 1927 in Raynes Park, London and brought up in Wimbledon. Sister Jeanne and brothers Keith and Dennis. He was head boy of King’s College School, Wimbledon and won a coveted Open Scholarship to New College, Oxford. He was awarded a double-first in Maths and Physics in July 1948, and a DPhil in 1951. Married Geraldine McNair, who he met at Oxford whist she was at the Ruskin, on 4th July 1952.

In 1952 David was appointed first lecturer – and later reader – in the Department of Electronics at Southampton University. There he did pioneering work under Professor Zepler – one of his projects was the construction of an atomic clock. He was awarded an honorary DSc by the University of Clermont-Ferrand in 1960. Their children: Jonathan, Marion and Bruce were born 14th July 1953, 17th January 1956 and 19th January 1960 respectively.

David published his first two books, Spectroscopy at Radio and Microwave Frequencies in 1955 and Free Radicals as Studied by Electron Spin Resonance in 1958. Each chapter of the first book began with a quotation from The Hunting of the Snark, which bamboozled the Russians when they produced a pirated edition of it!

In 1959 at the age of 32 he was appointed Professor of Physics at the then University College North Staffordshire, later Keele University. David’s inaugural lecture was entitled Radiophysics – a new probe of the Universe. His Foundation Year lectures at Keele were known by the students as ‘The Dave Ingram Show’ as a result of his tricks of freezing sausages in liquid Nitrogen and smashing them with a hammer and calling out a pretty girl and causing her long blonde hair to stand on end as he demonstrated the properties of a Van de Graaff generator. He wrote in The Times in April 1972 that “No student can be considered as properly educated today, unless he has some knowledge, both of the approach of the humanities and their methods of assessment, and also the meaning and reasoning of the scientific method in action.” He saw the Keele Foundation Year as a major challenge for an academic to produce the best teaching to meet the widest academic audience.

His third book was published in 1969, Biological and Biochemical Applications of Electron Spin Resonance. (He published two further books on Physics in the 70s.) He became Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1964 to 1965, and again from 1968 to 1971. He left Keele in 1973 to become Principal of Chelsea College of Science and Technology in the University of London. His most memorable feat as Principal was the saving of a condemned college, St. Mark and St. John for Chelsea College.

In 1980, David was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent at Canterbury. He remained Vice-Chancellor for fourteen years, during which time he became a trustee of the Carnegie UK Trust in 1980 and was appointed Chairman of its Community Services Committee in 1996 and became heavily involved in the administration of the Thanet Health Care Trust. He was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, a governor of the King’s School Canterbury and a trustee of Canterbury Cathedral. He was Chairman of the Chaucer Hospital Community Advisory Board and in 1991 he was made CBE.

He also served on the governing bodies of Wye College, of the University of London, the London School of Contemporary Dance, the South Bank University, the Roehampton Institute (University of Surrey – Roehampton) and the King’s College Hospital, Medical School. David was also the Honorary Treasurer of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals from 1987 to 1994, he was the Chairman of the Universities Central Council on Admissions from 1991 to 1994. He was a member of the Board of the British Council and numerous other national committees including the Standing Conference on University Admissions (1982-1989).

On retirement David left Canterbury and moved to Somerset where he participated in the Somerset and Taunton Health Care Trust, and where he particularly enjoyed ‘messing about in boats’. He died on 15th January 2001 aged 73 as a result of complications that followed a failed kidney transplant.

As for the biography, please note that biographical articles and other encyclopedic articles are outside the project scope of Wikimedia Commons, as explained in Commons:Project scope/Summary. If you wish to create a Wikipedia article in English, you should go to the English Wikipedia project. Essential reading there includes en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, en:Wikipedia:Your first article, en:Wikipedia:Verifiability and en:Wikipedia:Notability (people). If you have any questions about this, please refer to the English Wikipedia help desk.
As for the two portrait photographs, we can only host photographs that are in the public domain or which the copyright holder has agreed to publish under a free licence (i.e. a licence that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the licensed work for any purpose, including commercial purposes). If by the National Portrait Gallery you mean the one in London, you should be aware that they are not keen on free licensing (or on considering reproductions of public domain works as ineligible for copyright protection); see en:National Portrait Gallery, London#Legal threat against Wikipedia volunteer. Thus, if NPG holds the copyright, any permission you have or that you're likely to be able to get from them is probably not sufficient for the photos to be hosted on Commons. It is possible that use of the photos in Wikipedia would qualify as fair use and that they could be locally uploaded to English Wikipedia; see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and turn to en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions if you have any questions about this.

The copyright holder (which is typically the photographer, rather than someone appearing in the photographs) would have to agree to publish the content under a free license; i.e. a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Please note that permissions that only cover publication on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons are not sufficient. The licensing permission should be sent to our permission archive using our standard consent declaration. LX (talk, contribs) 15:43, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Upload file problem

When I tried to upload a file I generated from Linux Distribution Timeline I maintain (the original maintainers do not maintain it anymore) in here, I keep getting errors like:

href attributes <a http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink:href=""> with non-local target (e.g. http://, javascript:, etc) are not allowed in SVG files.

The weird thing is, it doesn't have many changes from the latest version, and they have the 'href attributes' inside the SVG file.

Any help would be appreciated.

--Konimex (talk) 10:58, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

@Konimex: I think that check was added to MediaWiki at some point after when the file was last updated (which was in 2012). The current version of it would be impossible to upload today.
The file has several invalid links:
<a xlink:href='www.artistx.org/'><text x='1498' y='574' >ArtistX</text></a>
<a xlink:href='www.linux-ren.org'><text x='1459' y='7900' >Everest</text></a>

<a xlink:href=''><text x='1208' y='9528' >PUIAS</text></a>
These have to be changed to:
<a xlink:href='http://www.artistx.org/'><text x='1498' y='574' >ArtistX</text></a>
<a xlink:href='http://www.linux-ren.org'><text x='1459' y='7900' >Everest</text></a>

<text x='2011' y='9022' >Viperr</text>
<text x='1208' y='9528' >PUIAS</text>
I just uploaded a new version of the file that corrected the problem. You'll need to correct your modified version in the same way for it to go through. Matma Rex (talk) 17:08, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
By the way, the error message you got is wrong: http:// links in fact are allowed (and https:// too), it's links without those two protocols that are disallowed. I submitted https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/267545 to correct this error in the message. Matma Rex (talk) 17:23, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Apparently, when I rechecked the file used to generate the svg, it does have the problem you mentioned (no http:// prefix and empty)
The message error messed with me for days, I had no idea what happened. Anyway, thanks for your clarification. I've successfully uploaded the file.

Do I need to request for any special rights for this? Thanks -- Csyogi (talk) 22:00, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Hello Csyogi, see 1. „This image is used in at least one case as a base map for a locator image; if you change or replace it in a way that moves its geographic features, images superimposed on it at specific locations will no longer be accurate. Please be careful. Thank you“ 2. feature picture 3. Log. So I think upload it as new file. Regards --Jean11 (talk) 22:24, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
I have not changed the map to move its geographic features, I have only updated the map with the boundary of new State which was formed couple of years ago. Advantage of having vector grphics map is to easily update them and geographic regions do change over time. This map hasn't been updated for about 10 years although new state was formed about two years ago. I wouldn't have bothered if this was a raster map image. Please let me know how do I make this change, the creator of this map seems to be inactive since past 6 years. -- Csyogi (talk) 23:11, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Also per COM:OVERWRITE, map files are allowed to be overwritten to reflect new information as necessary and this map file in question is expected to indicate the current boundaries as this is not made for a particular time period. -- Csyogi (talk) 06:27, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
You can request temporary unprotection at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections. LX (talk, contribs) 09:01, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you LX for the help. I've requested for the unprotection here. -- Csyogi (talk) 09:24, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Mislabeled picture

The file labeled "Juvenile coot.jpg" is actually a picture of a juvenile Eurasian moorhen. (The toes are a big giveaway; coots have lobed toes, moorhens don't.) Can we please get the file moved to the correct name, with an updated description? Thanks! MeegsC (talk) 03:15, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Done, moved to File:Juvenile Eurasian moorhen.jpg, updated the file description and removed uses from two Wikipedia articles. If you encounter similar issues again, you can just update the file description and use {{rename}} to request renaming. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 10:13, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Open source image

I just uploaded an image. To be in accordance with open source concepts, I wanted to upload in addition to the resulting PNG file also the Gimp file (source file) of that image. But sadly, I'm not allowed to upload file with file name extension "bz2" oder "xcfbz2".

Why? -- Pemu (talk) 18:27, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Server problems, other discussions at Village pump, AN. See also phab:T124804. Seems to be a bit better now, but RC still isn't working with direct link (leading to the WMF wiki), but only with such a link. Try it again, perhaps it's working now or later. --Bjarlin (talk) 20:08, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
@Bjarlin: That is not related. @Pemu: These file types are not whitelisted. Try a plain .xcf file, without compression. Matma Rex (talk) 21:08, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Even if there is no problem at server side with waste of space (due to assumed server side compression), this seems unsatisfying, as it results in unnecessary data traffic. In my case, it’s 44 instead of 18 MB. Therefore I want to propose to whitelist .xcfbz2 in addition to .xcf. -- Pemu (talk) 23:52, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry about the space, Wikimedia wikis are hosting around 73 terabytes of media files at the moment ;) But it's true that a bigger transfer can be a problem. I don't think there are any technical reasons why .xcfbz2 files couldn't be allowed, and it should be a simple config change – so if you feel strongly about it, ask a quick question on the village pump or somewhere to see if anyone has any objections, and if not, request a wiki configuration change. My originally intention has became void in the meantime, but nevertheless – what is the village pump and where can I ask? -- Pemu (talk) 11:45, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
I was thinking of Commons:Village pump. Matma Rex (talk) 11:47, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
@Matma Rex: This request came exactly at the time, when uploads were not possible anymore (since 18:23 UTC I had also issues and it wasn't even possible to reply here because of the issue), so it has to be related with the issue. If nothing is possible anymore and uploads aren't possible anywhere, then also this is not possible, that's clear. If no uploads are possible, then it doesn't matter which extension someone choses, it won't function in any way. If the user at that time had chosen the extension .jpg or .xcf, it wouldn't have been possible to upload such a file either, and that had nothing to do with any black- or whitelists. --Bjarlin (talk) 02:06, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough. Please don't take what I said personally :) Matma Rex (talk) 12:14, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
