Thanks a lot for this Organization and pages.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Proa 500 (talk • contribs) 19:31, 29 September 2015‎ (UTC)

bulk upload

Is there any means to make a bulk upload of pictures? I have a a family of pictures without any logo or brand and I can make them available to Wikimedia if applicable. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Renato.pierri (talk • contribs) 14:32, 1 October 2015‎ (UTC)

Sounds like you need Commons:VicuñaUploader or Commons:Commonist. But please note that if you did not take/create the pictures yourself, they may be copyrighted even if they don't have trademarks in them. You should not upload copyrighted files. See Commons:Project_scope#Scope_part_1:_Files. BMacZero (talk) 20:27, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
The statement that you should not upload copyrighted files is misleading. Copyrighted files are welcome here, but they must be covered by a free copyright license issued by the legitimate copyright holder. Also, the Upload Wizard also supports uploading up to 50 files at a time. LX (talk, contribs) 17:40, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

How to upload new photo on wikipedia page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.126.0.43 (talk • contribs) 23:03, 1 October 2015‎ (UTC)

It's a two-step process. First, you upload the photo to Commons (if it is a free photo) or to Wikipedia (if it is a non-free photo that qualifies for fair use under the policies of the Wikipedia project in question, e.g. en:Wikipedia:Non-free content). Then you include it on the page in question. LX (talk, contribs) 17:35, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

It looks like this is about File:"Caracol" Paviotti.jpg, which was restored a couple of days after you posted this, when the permission e-mail was processed. So I guess this is resolved. I have a file of hundreds of vintage pictures of various towns in New Hampshire and Vermont. I uploaded one but found no way to describe the pic, so I deleted it. How do I add a description? If you are using Special:UploadWizard, the default interface for uploading files to Commons, "Describe" is the fourth step, after "Upload" and "Release rights". LX (talk, contribs) 17:36, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

license of audio recording

I have an audio recording of my father broadcasting the first jets in to National Airport (Reagan) in Wash, DC. in 1966. It was for WPRW in Manassas, VA. It is by Thomas C Ormond. Please let me know! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kocollier (talk • contribs) 15:17, 8 July 2015‎ (UTC)

Hi Kocollier! I'm sorry you haven't received a response yet. I assume it's because there wasn't a lot of context provided in the question. WPRW looks like a US radio call sign, so I'm guessing that's a radio station. You say that the recording is of your father and that it is by Thomas C Ormond. So is Thomas C Ormond your father, or is he the person who wrote the script that your father read, or is he the audio technician who did the recording? Or something else?
In any case, copyright of United States audio works is notoriously complex and long-lasting, as explained in en:Copyright law of the United States#Works created before 1978, so it is unlikely that the recording is in the public domain. As for licensing, as with any copyrighted work, the only licenses that apply are those explicitly granted by the copyright holder. LX (talk, contribs) 10:23, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Based on the Farsi in the heading and your IP address, I'm guessing you are looking for Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Iran. You can find the upload form for that contest here. You will need to have an account and be logged in using that account before you can upload.
According to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015/FAQ#What are the basic rules?, submissions were accepted during September, which is now over. According to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in Iran, the contest runs between September 6 and November 6. You may wish to ask which rules actually apply at the WLM help desk. Hello,

I am very new to all this, and find all copyright information really difficult to understand. I want to upload an acting headshot to my wiki page, but of course I did not take the picture, however the photographer allows actors to use their headshots for all site work etc. How do I go about uploading it safely, and please give detailed info on how to submit it and what options to select during the submission process for copyright.

@Imtiaz772: Since you had previously uploaded the images to enwiki (with the same filenames) you won't be able to see the Commons copies from there without the 'local' copies on that wiki being deleted first. You'll need to ask an admin over there to sort it... if the local copies are deleted, the ones on Commons will show up. Revent (talk) 10:03, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Using the Upload Wizard I selected a bunch of SVG files. Each gives the message, "The upload succeeded, but the server could not get a preview thumbnail." Hi! I'm sorry for responding in English, but my German is a bit limited, and it doesn't look like anyone who actually speaks it is going to answer. As far as I can tell, we don't have a gallery for this particular bridge on Commons, but we do have a category for it, Category:Queen Louise bridge, and it is in that category. LX (talk, contribs) 10:59, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
--LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 11:16, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

How do I download music? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 197.77.205.249 (talk) 17:08, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

PROBLEM UPLOADING/ DOWNLOADING MUSIC

Hi

I' m completely new in this field Wikipedia thing but I find it very interesting & useful as weall. My problem lies with the fact that I totally struggle to understand the direction for downloading music on my Android Tablet. I've spent the entire day trying to figure that out in vain, though! Any assistance in this regard will be highly appreciated!197.77.205.249 19:08, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Seeing as you're on the upload help desk, do you mean uploading or downloading?
To play a music file like File:Ludwig van Beethoven - symphony no. 5 in c minor, op. 67 - i. allegro con brio.ogg, simply click on the play button on the file description page. To download the file, right-click (usually emulated using a long press on touch devices) on the link immediately below the playback widget and select "Save link as" or equivalent.
The process for uploading audio files is the same as uploading any other files. To upload files to Commons, you need to have an account and be logged in. Commons:First steps is a good starting point. It's also a good idea to read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. If the audio is not in a supported format, you'll have to convert it first. Circle of fifths

I tried to upload a new version of Image:Circle of fifths deluxe 4.svg without success. For now, I worked around it by uploading the new version as Image:Circle of fifths deluxe 5.svg and editing one page and a template on the English Wikipedia to reflect the new filename. Since this image is widely used, I do not want to go further with that kind of editing before finding out the cleanest way to make the substitution. Uploader changes all images to JPG

Has anyone noticed this? When I uploaded File:This Side of Paradise dust jacket.gif from WP, the file extension changed from .gif to gif.jpg. The image shouldn't have been a GIF in the first place - the image was eventually moved to File:This Side of Paradise dust jacket.jpg). Somehow I'm the first person to notice this (if it's something to do with my device, other people with the same/similar devices would have noticed it). SVG images cause quite a bit of trouble – the "Save Image" tool doesn't consider them images, so you can't save a SVG to your computer and thus you can't upload it. The only was you can upload a SVG is with CommonsHelper ( if I knew about it when I uploaded the linked file, I'd have used it).

 – Hop on Bananas (talk) 01:33, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Hop on Bananas lol, are you clicking in "download" to save the image? Using this bottom : , if you do not click at "Full resolution", it will not provide you a SVG file, but a PNG file scaled down. To save directly, you have to save by "save image as", and if your system is not merely recognizing the file, save it using at the end of the file name .svg.
Same to gif.
About upload, use the Wizard, and I am pretty sure that you are the only one that notice, because you are doing some mistakes. What's your sources to download such images? -- RTA 06:30, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
  1. On my iPad, I only have "Save Image" and "Copy". Neither works with svgs.
  2. I can't change the filename of a saved file on iPad.

Even if I could, if I type a filename ending in .svg, the uploader changes it to svg.jpg when I undock the keyboard. Other people should be noticing this.

If I'm not entirely mistaken (which is indeed a possibility – this is only based on what I've read), iPads are rather crippled/sandboxed/dumbed down and have no general purpose file system that the user can actually access, so there is no real concept of saving files – everything is a document associated with an application. Possible solutions might include not using an iPad, using a cloud storage service, using a special download application, using a different browser or installing software that understands SVG files. Apart from the first one, I haven't tried any of them. To be honest, I don't think a lot of people use iPads for serious work on Commons, so I wouldn't expect issues and solutions or workarounds to be well-documented. LX (talk, contribs) 17:03, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

That makes sense (I might try editing on my desktop, but software that understands SVGs sounds cool). But, as I said, part of the problem is the uploader itself. Let's say I'm uploading an image called "XXX.svg" that I saved as a SVG (in this hypothetical case, my iPad understands SVGs). I choose the file from my photo album and enter "XXX.svg" for the filename. As soon as I undock to fill in the next field, the filename in the filename field changes from ".svg" to ".svg.jpg". Is this also an iPad problem?

Anyway, a problem with editing WP/WC on my desktop is that I already have an account on another wiki on it, and the password-saving feature on both devices does not allow multiple accounts on one device.

I'm really not qualified to provide iPad support, but yes, I think the issues you're seeing with filenames changing are caused by the particular issues of that environment already mentioned. The account/password issue sounds really strange. There should be no connection between passwords saved for Wikimedia wikis and other wikis. LX (talk, contribs) 16:58, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

It's the "Do you want to save this password" feature. Hop on Bananas (talk)

What's your question? --rimshottalk 17:15, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Upload to 'Wiki' literary works

Commons talk,

I will be compiling a literary work in a document format. It'll be published as a book and I feel I'll need to develop on it's stature with the 'wikimedia' community. If this site will initiate response and discussion I want to upload. I will not speak further of my disclosures but, if I'm told there is a way to begin upload I will surely rush this project with higher standards. Until then. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LIVED being (talk • contribs) 12:09, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

I've read your question (assuming it is indeed a question) several times now, but I cannot figure out what aspect of uploading media files to Commons it is that you need help with. Could you clarify? LX (talk, contribs) 17:00, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

upload a file

To whom it may concern,

I would like to upload my file. But it seems like wiki doesn't accept file ending by "doc". Is there any blank I can directly write instead of downloading file?

Thank you.

Word documents are not among the allowed file types. You are at Wikimedia Commons, a media repository. If you want to write an article, you can do so at the Wikipedia in the language of your choice, for example English. If you do want to upload a file, see first steps, and ask again if you have further questions. --rimshottalk 10:18, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Kategorien

Warum wurde die Eingabemaske kürzlich so verändert, dass man nur mit Mühe eine einzige Kategorie eingeben kann. Außerdem stören die Popups an dieser Stelle gewaltig. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter Geymayer (talk • contribs) 07:09, 11 October 2015‎ (UTC)

Hi! I'm sorry for responding in English, but my German is a bit limited, and it doesn't look like anyone who actually speaks it is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Forum. I believe that recent changes to category handling in the Upload Wizard are the result of phabricator:T51710 and Commons:Village pump/Proposals#Categories "looking more required" in UploadWizard (permanent link). Colors in map of Israel Railways

How critical is it that our map of the Israel Railways (File:Israel Railway map Hebrew English sb.svg) lines use the same colors as the original, copyrighted map (at http://www.rail.co.il/HE/Tickets/Map/Pages/map.aspx)? Keep in mind that the colors are neither any marking on the actual infrastructure (trains, stations, etc), nor the names of the lines (unlike the MBTA lines, where the colors are, in fact, both). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:48, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

Are you asking whether it is a problem from a copyright perspective that the colour selection is the same? If so, I don't think the choice of half a dozen colours is something that merits copyright protection. LX (talk, contribs) 20:48, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Upload problem

So I uploaded a file to Commons that I wanted a local/WP copy of. I tried to upload it to WP with the same information, but it's taking a really long time to upload. Hop on Bananas (talk) 16:40, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

If I understand your question correctly, the problem is not actually with uploading here on Commons, so it sounds more like an issue for the help desk on whichever Wikipedia project you're trying to upload it to. In any case, it's unlikely that anyone is going to provide any assistance unless you provide more information, such as the original name and location of the file in question and which upload process you are using. Uploading license files

Hi, I've been trying to upload files for pages such as Casper in film and Casper and the Spectrals. With Casper in film I wanted an image that is similar to the one with the file name CasperMovie.png with is found on the Casper Wiki site, and with Casper and the Spectrals I wanted to upload the cover of the comic. Can you at least give me some tutorials of how to upload files that are licensed with sources or if it is my own work. I am new at this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonJakes (talk • contribs) 03:58, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

The information you have provided is not sufficient to identify the images in question, but if you are talking about content from movies published by Ardden Entertainment, it's extremely unlikely that the copyright holder would be willing to publish the content under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose including commercial purposes, and unless they do that, we can't host it. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 20:23, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Category selection

Uploaded a picture of a B-52.

Did not show up on the B-52 page. What category should I be using?

I got a list of B-52 categories, but with extra numbers tacked on the end. Might not be for the aircraft at all, but no clue as to what they are for. Edited the category on the page to match one on the B-52 page, but the pic still doesn't show up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cpergielx (talk • contribs) 03:45, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

The link in the above text got scrambled. Now the picture itself is gone. Cpergielx (talk) 15:33, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
I believe you mean File:Preparing for takeoff from Barksdale Air Force Base, La.jpg. It's not gone, and I see it in Category:Boeing B-52H just fine. It's on the second page, near the end, since the file name starts with P, which is rather late in the alphabet. The subcategories are for individual aircraft of this model based on their registration. The one for this aircraft would be Category:60-0048 (aircraft), but it doesn't exist yet.
While we're on the topic of this file, please note that as mentioned in Commons:Licensing#License information, you need to provide verifiable source information. I went ahead and added that. (I also uploaded a higher resolution version.) LX (talk, contribs) 20:17, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Categories for this pic have me a little confused. I have two links: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/B-52_Stratofortress https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Boeing_B-52H The category page lists a bunch of numbers (they all start with 6). What do they signify? More importantly, how do you know? Cpergielx (talk) 19:48, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

The first link is for a gallery, and the second is for a category. As for the subcategories: again, their names are based on the serial number of the individual aircraft that they're intended for. The first two digits in the serial number represent the year the aircraft was ordered (1960 in this case), and you can see the rest of the number (0048) on the side and tail of the aircraft. There are some pretty detailed explanations and lists of these numbers out there. LX (talk, contribs) 22:42, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
