May I print a wiki photo?

The photo is an image of a person dressed up as "Xenu: Evil, Galactic overlord of scientology which was dated Augugst 26, 2009 with an article of the same name. Is this photo(only), reprintable for an upcoming published book? It also states it's http://open.salon.com/blog/rob anderson 1/2009/8/26/wikipedia on xenu evil galactic overlord of scientology — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.65.232.75 (talk • contribs) 17:48, 3 November 2014‎ (UTC)

I can't answer your question unless you give the specific image name on this site. In general, you need to comply with the terms of the license on the image's description page. AnonMoos (talk) 01:44, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
We don't seem to have an image matching that description here. I'm guessing you're talking about the image used on http://open.salon.com/blog/rob_anderson_1/2009/08/26/wikipedia_on_xenu_evil_galactic_overlord_of_scientology. That image doesn't come from Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons or any other Wikimedia project as far as I can tell, so you'll probably have to ask the blogger where he got it from. To me, it looks like just another non-free Internet image, so no, you probably cannot use it in a book unless you find out who the author is and get their permission. Again, this doesn't really have anything to do with Wikimedia Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 18:15, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Uploading photos to Wikipedia

add a caption here

Yesterday I created an account on Wikimedia and added photos I took of homes on the National Registry in my area. My photos are uploaded to wiki media but don't appear on wikipedia. Is that because I have to wait 4 days? Will they automatically show up in 4 days or did I miss a step? I haven't contributed 10 items yet which I think I understood you needed to contribute to wikipedia.

My family would really like to work on taking photos of all of the homes in our area on the national registry but If I don't figure this soon out I can't spend too much more time on it.

There are two steps to adding images to articles: (1) Uploading the files, which you did successfully; (2) adding them to suitable articles. The second step does not happen automatically, but you can do it yourself. See en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for a detailed description, in short, add [[File:Joseph Olpin House.JPG|thumb|add a caption here]] where you want that particular image to appear. --rimshottalk 07:32, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

howto acknowledge the use of an image from commons in a new image?

Hello, I have created an image, which I want to upload to commons. It uses a part from an image I found on commons. Where in the upload process can I include the acknowledgement for the image I have used? It is the parachute from this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AParachute_de_secours_-_parapente_neutralis%C3%A9.svg

The license information for the image is:

von PiRK (Eigenes Werk) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0) oder GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html)], via Wikimedia Commons --Raketenbauer (talk) 21:33, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

One way is to include the {{AttribSVG}} template in the "Source" and mention PiRK in the "Author" field. The license template is {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} which will automatically be translated into various languages... AnonMoos (talk) 00:31, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Old book cover

I want to upload a photograph of the book-cover: Richard Stumpf „Warum die Flotte zerbrach – Kriegstagebuch eines christlichen Arbeiters“ (herausgegeben von Wilhelm Dittmann), Verlag J.H.W. Dietz Nachfolger, Berlin, 1927. I asked the publishing house and received their consent, see email below. However, the publishing house is not entirely sure as to whether there could be additional intellectual property rights (of the person, who produced the cover sesign). How can I proceed?

Sehr geehrter Herr Kuhl,

It could depend on the nature of the cover -- if it's just a basic arrangement of text, then it may not be worthy of separate copyright (according to U.S. copyright laws, at least). If it's truly anonymous, then {{Anonymous-EU}} could apply... AnonMoos (talk) 08:22, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Ansonsten bitte in Deinen Einstellungen ändern. -- Rillke(q?) 20:37, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Uploading a photo of another person with his permission

I have a friend. He lives in a certain country (no matter what). He made some photos of his city. They weren't used anywhere. He has no problem with mine publishing his photos on Wikipedia (he himself isn't registered here). So, there's no problem with copyrite. BUT, there's no such option in uploading photo. Two of my photos, which I uploaded were already deleted for "copyrite violation" (for another reasons). I'm afraid, if I upload this, administration will also delete them. Should I write that I made them, or what?

Sorry for my English. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MichaelGrin (talk • contribs) 15:43, 20 November 2014‎ (UTC)

Hello. You need to get the permission of the photographer to publish these pictures under an accepted licence. However, I am afraid these pictures are out of our project's scope. Unused, private images are not accepted here and they might be deleted. Please use another website if you want to publish private holiday photographs (Flickr for example). Best regards, BrightRaven (talk) 16:55, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Hello. Maybe my answer here above was not really appropriate. You have uploaded this image. I think you have done a good job: you have clearly mentioned the name of the author and the licence. Since you are not the author of the picture, you should send the permission of the author through OTRS. BrightRaven (talk) 09:00, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Audio upload doesn't appear

I have recorded and uploaded a name pronunciation. (Joanne audio pronunciation.ogg) A page appears with two options, one of which says, "To use the file in a wiki, copy this text into a page:" (

Pronunciation of Joanne and variants.

) I do that but no pronunciation appears when I do a preview. It merely causes a text break. Why doesn't it work? (I'm trying to enter it after the middle name "Joan" in the Wiki Bonnie Lou. Nicmart (talk) 16:03, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Now that I've added the file link here I see what happens. What I WANT to happen is that the audio icon for pronunciation appear after "Joan." I tried the template for that and couldn't get it to work, either. That template include phonetic pronunciation, which I don't have. Can I just insert the audio pronunciation? Nicmart (talk) 16:07, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Another bit of confusion. I was trying to link to an entry page for Bonnie Lou to show where I want the pronunciation to go, but I didn't accomplish that. Don't know how. Nicmart (talk) 16:11, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Now I've tried inserting this -- Audio file "en-us-Joanne audio pronunciation.ogg" not found -- but it merely returns a file doesn't exist message when the audio icon is clicked. Nicmart (talk) 16:18, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Simply remove the en-us- prefix from {{audio|en-us-Joanne audio pronunciation.ogg|Audio (US)|lang=en}}, since that's not in the actual filename: Audio (US) LX (talk, contribs) 11:30, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Can't upload SVG

I'm trying to upload an SVG and I keep getting the message "This file might be corrupt, or have the wrong extension." I have verified the file with the Wikimedia SVG Check, with the W3C Validator, and with validator.nu set to load external entities. All of them are happy with the file. The file has SMIL animations. The file has an extension of ".svg". It's available as a JSFiddle. What can I do to get it to be accepted? --- Wfaulk (talk) 07:48, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

The issue is not that it would be invalid SVG but that MediaWiki (our server software) thinks it contains scripts:
{
	"servedby": "mw1143",
	"error": {
		"code": "verification-error",
		"info": "This file did not pass file verification",
		"details": ["uploadscripted"],
		"*": "See https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php for API usage"
	}
}
Awesome work, btw! However, note that MediaWiki will convert it into a png file without animation for thumbnailing. -- Rillke(q?) 14:17, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
It does not contain scripts, though. Any idea what the heuristic is, so that I can try to work around it?
Also, I created it such that when it renders without animation that it shows the final state. --- Wfaulk (talk) 20:15, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
I figured it out. MediaWiki didn't like animations being specified to start when other animations ended (that is, with the attribute begin="animationId.end"), so I changed it to use explicit timings (using the values and keyTimes attributes). I'm going to see if I have access to put that information on the SVG page. (The file is now uploaded at File:Pythagoras-proof-anim.svg.) --- Wfaulk (talk) 21:39, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
The code preventing upload in question is, committed 2 and a half months ago, BTW:
# Change href with animate from (http://html5sec.org/#137). This doesn't seem
# possible without embedding the svg, but filter here in case.
if ( $stripped == 'from'
  && $strippedElement === 'animate'
  && !preg_match( '!^https?://!im', $value )
) {
  wfDebug( __METHOD__ . ": Found animate that might be changing href using from "
    . "\"<$strippedElement '$attrib'='$value'...\" in uploaded file.\n" );

  return true;
}
From what I understand is that you just have to remove the from="0" attributes from the animate nodes. I wonder why the from attribute is not being allowed to be a plain number like 0. Any idea why, Bawolff? -- Rillke(q?) 22:17, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
I rechecked and it looks like your analysis is correct. Interestingly, it's okay with from attribute in an animateTransform element. Maybe the same security issue doesn't apply there. --- Wfaulk (talk) 03:39, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
(ping @CSteipp (WMF): ) Hmm, this kind of seems like a weird check all around, as its not filtering the to attribute, which seems just as exploitable, and only allowing link-like value seems odd, as it would be rare for someone to use animate to change a link value. I think the check should be changed to be more specific. Bawolff (talk) 04:00, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
The specific attack vector is linked in the comment, although it looks like the to needs better filtering also. I'm guessing I found several images on commons with from's that started with /https?/, and that's why I added that exception. I'll have to revisit it. Need assist uploading a page of images. "Google-digitized"

This is from an 1855 text. Images are here and same page here. They are listed asː" Copyright: Public Domain, Google-digitized." on the http://babel.hathitrust.org page. It says Public Domain or Public Domain in the United States, Google-digitized: In addition to the terms for works that are in the Public Domain or in the Public Domain in the United States above, the following statement applies: The digital images and OCR of this work were produced by Google, Inc. (indicated by a watermark on each page in the PageTurner). Google requests that the images and OCR not be re-hosted, redistributed or used commercially. The images are provided for educational, scholarly, non-commercial purposes.
