Danke — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hansen-Lorenzen Erika (talk • contribs) 07:11, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Image upload order
Why is the last image of the upload stream ends up to be the first, while all the other uploads are in the proper order? (They were numerically ordered). It creates problems by necessitating a file rename request. (More unnecessary work for the commons admins). — Ineuw talk 20:25, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

I am trying to upload a graph from Wikimedia commons into a Wikipedia article. - @Aakol1234: if the image is already on Commons, you shouldn’t be trying to upload it to WP: instead, just edit the article to add a File template with the link and it will display there. Take any article with a similarly formatted image for an example of the code to use, or see the Images help page.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:16, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Thumbnail problem
I am getting the following error when I upload my pictures: "The upload succeeded, but the server could not get a preview thumbnail." What do I need to do to correct/prevent this?
The files are TIFF images, which I've seen used here before, anywhere from 9 - 12 MB in size. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tim.erskine (talk • contribs) 01:07, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Tim,
- The thumbnails will sometimes not generate instantly, but on visiting the page of the file in question, there seems to be no problem with generating thumbnails now.
- I would suggest that you don't need to do anything to correct or prevent this, and can continue to upload TIFFs with no concerns

Clarifying license type for another persons work - permission received
Hi, I am looking to clarify wether and under which license I could load a digital image of a piece of art work done by someone else. I requested the artist for use of the image, I have included relevant text from the request e-mail below;
I am writing to seek the use of a digital image of a portrait you did 'Asis' as part of the Sundust series. I wish to use this image to illustrate two articles I am writing, one on Wikipedia, and another on a personal blog. For purposes of Wikicommons, the license required would be the right to reproduce and modify. I have included a link to the rights page info here, I believe the specific license name/type would be Attribution or Free Art licenses.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attribution_%28copyright%29
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Art_License
The artists response was as follows;
I have no problem giving you permission to use my art so long as it is only for Wikipedia and your Kalenjin personal blog and only if I am clearly labeled as the artist [full name: Sara Golish] with a direct link to my website [www.saragolish.com]. I would also require that the image is not altered in any way. The "Free Art License" is not ok as it allows one to "freely copy, distribute and transform" without my permission.
Please advise...
The image can be found at the links below;

- Hello Eren. The simple answer is you cannot upload such images to Wikimedia Commons. which can only host media that is free for anyone to re-use in anyway, even commercially and even to modify it. If the artist doesn't wish to license their work that is their prerogative. Green Giant (talk) 22:31, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

- Where I live I can literally spend all day trying to upload a file to Commons and still not succeed. Is there a possibility of creating an upload method where we could add a link to a file on Google Drive or Drop Box? That might be a lot easier and more reliable, especially for people living in remote places with low bandwidth. Cfynn (talk) 13:16, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
SVG file cannot be uploaded: This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser?
I wanted to update an SVG file but every time I try, I get the above message. I do not have the slightest idea how to avoid that message as my file does not contain any html code or links. w3 validation approves the file; both my browsers show the same problem; the file was created the same way as the previously uploaded versions. Any suggestions? --Wribln (talk) 14:00, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- This often (but not always) means included Javascript, which is not allowed on Commons. Run it through Commons:SVG Check and see if that finds the problem... AnonMoos (talk) 23:34, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
- I ran the check as suggested and the result was: No issues found. :-( --Wribln (talk) 09:33, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
- Well, try saving it in the most minimal format with as few additions specific to your editing program as possible ("plain SVG" if using InkScape). If that doesn't work, someone will have to open the file in a text editor and scan through it manually... AnonMoos (talk) 12:14, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- Problem solved!! I did a line-by-line comparison with the previous version and found two lonely "onmouse..." statements... Hint for other users: If you prepare such a graph using yED, disable "Export Description as Tooltip" during the SVG Export (tab "Links and Descriptions"), this not only omits the Javascript Code but also any related onmouse... event handling. Please let me know if this procedure for uploading a picture to Commons is acceptable
Hello,
While editing this article on Wikipedia, I noticed that it doesn't have a picture; furthermore, on the talk page, if you click on "show" next to "WikiProject Biography / Musicians (Rated C-class)", it reads "It is requested that a photograph or picture of this person be included in this article to improve its quality." Therefore, I contacted Tiffany Alvord's manager, who kindly wrote back to me agreeing to provide a picture soon, which belongs to her (taken by her); she is willing to "publish" the picture under a suitable free license using the standard declaration of consent in an e-mail that she will send to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org However, she knows nothing about Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, so I myself must upload the picture once I receive it from her. That brings up my first question:
- Which option should I choose for uploading the photo once I receive it? I don't see any good choices here. May I use "It is entirely my own work", even though she owns the picture? I see no other solution since she has no experience with Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
Second question:
- When I upload the picture using the Wizard, may I leave out the URL (source)? I ask this question because the first time I uploaded a picture here, I provided a Facebook link with the picture as the source, but this caused problems and delays since the Facebook link also had comments from fans. I don't want to go through the same problem again since the picture I'll receive from Tiffany Alvord's manager will almost certainly be from a social media site, so it will have comments again. May I simply upload the picture without a source, add the OTRS pending template, and then add as the source (by editing the page) the URL of the image provided by Wikimedia Commons? Or may I use the social media site source while uploading, and then change it later to the URL of the image as located on Wikimedia Commons?
Thank you very much in advance! Dontreader (talk) 06:11, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- If you're using Commons:Upload rather than Special:UploadWizard, don't use the option "It is entirely my own work", since it is not your own work. Instead, use the option "It is from somewhere else". If you're using the Upload Wizard, select "This file is not my own work".
- You should provide a truthful source. If it comes from a social media site, that's what you should state. There's no reason why that should cause any problems or delays. The OTRS volunteers just have a big backlog, so most things take a long time. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:12, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
- LX, thanks so much for your help! Definitely I'll use the Wizard. I foolishly seem to have provided a link to the conventional upload tool. Anyway, I feel very confident now that I will be able to upload the picture without doubts and without mistakes; I'm still waiting to receive it. It's great to know that a social media site link is okay as a source. Once again, thank you very much, and I really appreciate the time and help you give people here!

One final question about upload procedure regarding verification emails
Hello,
I want to upload a photograph to Commons that is owned by someone else. The owner has already told me in an email that she is willing to use the standard declaration of consent to publish the photo under the free license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 Unported. Therefore, may I upload the photo, then add the OTRS pending template, then send her the URL of the image as located on Wikimedia Commons for which she is providing permission, and then let her send an email to the OTRS team with all the details so they can verify everything?
In other words, do I have to send an email showing that she gave me permission to publish the photo? That seems like a waste of time because, in my opinion, my email to the OTRS team would have no value. The linked page that I provided above says, "The email you send must come from an email address that we can recognize. For instance, if you are releasing images from a website, your email address must be associated with the website or listed on the contact page of the website." Well, she (not me) has the email address that the OTRS team can recognize. So, please, do I need to write an email to the OTRS team, or can the emails be sent completely between the owner of the photo and the OTRS team?
Thank you very much in advance! Dontreader (talk) 12:02, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, you may use the procedure that you describe. As the uploader, you would be taking on some responsibility if the copyright holder changes their mind about providing the formal permission or if there has been some misunderstanding, but as long as you are acting in good faith, that seems like a very small level of risk. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:47, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
- LX, that is excellent news. Once again I'm very grateful for your time and for your very clear explanation. Have a nice day! Dontreader (talk) 18:30, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Please Help: Logo Copyright / Non-Free Logo
Hello,
I want to upload a corporate logo from my computer drive to commons for use on the company page. I want to include non-free logo}} and Non-free use rationale logo}} as I understand this is important for protection but when can I add this? I try adding these after upload but instead of displaying the copyright message, it says "This project page may meet the criteria for speedy deletion" and is "not published under a free license".
I assume this is to do with my selection on the Wiki Commons uploader. Should I select it as my own work or NOT my own work, and if NOT, what selection under "Right the Publish This Work" will allow me to add these appropriate tags??
