Clint Bolick
Hi - I need some help. I have uploaded this file from Flickr: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Clint_Bolick.jpg#filelinks. Can I use this in the Clint Bolick article on Wikipedia, or do I need to wait until it is reviewed? Next question - I would like to crop this picture. Is it possible to specify cropping when I display the picture in the Wikipedia article? Or should I download the file, crop it, and upload it again? Or is there another way? Thank you!
Here's a link to the article on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clint_Bolick. Thanks - James Cage (talk) 03:07, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Wait - I think I figured out the cropping part: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clint_Bolick_(cropped).jpg. I'll go ahead and use this - if anyone objects I assume I'll be notified. Thanks!! James Cage (talk) 03:11, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Correctly stating the provenance of PD images where the first image comes from IWM
I believe I have worked out how to upload higher resolution versions of images that have already been identified as Public Domain correctly. I have a supplementary question for cases where : I can establish that they are in PD but no version has yet been uploaded to the Commons. For example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E-18511_el_Alamein_troops_advance.jpg. I searched for El Alamein and the file number but could not find a file already uploaded.
My first upload had been accepted as containing acceptable PD license information. However I notice similar uploads by other users are using a different format for these particular group of files. Is what I am doing sufficient? How I do include the ancillary information in the most acceptable format? Lockeyear (talk) 12:08, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Firstly, I suppose I should point out that "accepted" is only true in a very limited sense. There is no systematic manual review of uploaded files, and the automated checks are very basic. What you're doing meets the formal requirements as far as I can tell, with two reservations:
- There is a source template you can use for photos from the IWM: {{IWM Collections}} (click on the link here to see the parameters it takes). Doing so is helpful but not strictly required; the link you provided also meets the requirements for verifiable source information.
- I've taken care of these issues, removed a stray heading and tidied up the categories. (There's no category named Category:War Office Photographers, and it's usually not a good idea to place files in categories that don't exist.)
- As for differences compared to similar uploads, it would help if you'd point out some examples of files that you have in mind, but I see that User:Fæ has uploaded quite a few files from the IWM, so perhaps he can give some pointers. —LX (talk, contribs) 19:19, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- As LX points out I have uploaded a lot of these files, probably more than 30,000. It would be good to ensure you capture as much as reasonable about the context of the image by taking information from the IWM catalogue, see one of my most recent uploads at File:Winston Churchill being greeted by local people in Reykjavik, during his visit to Iceland on his way home from the Atlantic Conference with President Roosevelt, 19 August 1941. H12910.jpg. I use my own "ingestion template" which adds some handy extra fields to the standard information table, but there are no firm standards you need to follow. I add the IWM number in the title, which helps others to track duplicates in the future.
- A word of caution however, I link my uploads to the custom licence that the IWM applies which calls all images non-commercial use only. I believe under the terms of the use of their website it is reasonable to quote these conditions, even when the image is clearly public domain. The distinction is your legal use of their website, versus a legally correct licence on Commons. I have also put on record my correspondence with the IWM informing them of my uploads and giving them the opportunity to raise any reasonable objection. --Fæ (talk) 21:22, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks for your input which hopefully allows me to follow a better than acceptable approach. In practice its seems that, given the scale of the valuable work done by Fæ and others, the need to upload the first image establishing provenance will be rare. I cannot hope to emulate the scale of that enterprise. As earlier stated my primary interest is adding images of better resolution as they become available. uploading images
Hello, I try to upload pictures that I got a permission from a friend to add to Wikimedia. This pictures were published on 1951 in Israel and dealing with the holocaust . I do not have the exact date. I did already uploaded it to Picasa and it is public םn the web. I don't know why but the uploading failed. What should I do? Mashalif (talk) 16:27, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
- You say you got permission from a friend. Did your friend personally create the photos? If not, you may be asking the wrong person for permission. Only the legitimate copyright holder can issue a valid permission.
- You say you got permission to upload the pictures to (one of the projects that the) Wikimedia (Foundation oversees). (My assumptions in parentheses.) In order for you to upload them to Wikimedia Commons, the copyright holder needs to agree to publish the pictures under a license that allows anyone to use them in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Permissions that only cover use on Wikimedia projects are not sufficient. Please see Commons:OTRS for information on how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission. The page is also available in Hebrew.
- You say that uploading failed. In what way? Did you get an error message? Were there questions you weren't able to answer? Did the upload process stall?
Photo is not being accepted by Wiki page. I used the wizard to upload it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbm57 (talk • contribs) 18:51, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- In what way is it not being accepted? Again: Did you get an error message? Were there questions you weren't able to answer? Did the upload process stall? Also, why did you get a different user name? Or are you indeed a different person from Mashalif? (If so, why did you not enter your question under a separate heading?) —LX (talk, contribs) 19:46, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Question about a possible fair use photo of an identifiable person
I have a photograph of the Hon. Nancy D. Freudenthal (Federal District Court Judge, district of Wyoming) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_D._Freudenthal). This photo was her publicity photo, given out freely to those who wanted a picture, while she was First Lady of Wyoming.
A JPG version was given to me to post on her Wikipedia entry by her then-assistant. I would like to add it to her page, and I believe it falls under the fair use rule. I do not know who the photographer is. I believe it was taken in 2006 or early 2007, after the second inauguration.
Please advise me of how to submit this photo so it will be accepted.
Thank you!

- I mentioned this on en.wikisource but just in case you look here first, I have uploaded the DjVu version. Wikimedia support for PDF is still not perfect. The DjVu should be more stable. As a bonus, it is also readable. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 23:31, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Bild aufblenden
--rimshottalk 16:40, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- Danke für die Info. --Hapebalf (talk) 17:43, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Uploading PD files
Hello. Sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but I'm having difficulty uploading PD photos. I have the source URL, and the author's name, and when asked to add the tag I used this template:
{{PD-author | [http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/view-image.php?image=29414&picture=atm-machine&large=1 Peter Griffin]}}
However, we I click "next", I get this message: "This file is missing source information. Source information must be provided so that the copyright status can be verified by others. Unless the source is given, the file will be deleted."
What am I doing wrong? Onel5969 (talk) 14:21, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- It looks like there are problems recognizing parameters with links. If you specify the parameter name ("1") explicitly, it will work:
- {{PD-author|1=[http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/view-image.php?image=29414&picture=atm-machine&large=1 Peter Griffin]}}.
- --rimshottalk 16:47, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- Specifically, when using links with equals signs in unnamed template parameters, you need to refer to the parameter explicitly by its number to avoid the part preceding the first equals sign from being interpreted as a parameter name. See bugzilla:14235. In this case, failing to do so results in the first unnamed parameter of {{PD-author}} being empty, which causes it to turn into a problem tag. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:42, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- @LX: Thanks. That seems to work.
Bildergänzung "SMS Medusa"
Guten Tag!
Previous File / Can't upload
Hello Friends,
This is Amos, Paul Ekman Group Customer Service Rep, writing on behalf of Paul Ekman, Ph.D. I am trying to upload a photo of Dr. Ekman to Wikimedia Commons for addition to Dr. Ekman's Wikipedia page. When I do so, I get an error that says "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." When I look at the details, it seems that user Jcb deleted the image due to copyright violation. This is great, I'm glad that there is such vigilance on Wikimedia. However, now I am the owner of the photo wishing to put it on Wikimedia with a CC-BY-SA license. Is there a way to remove the restriction or bypass it? Thank you for your support!
Sincerely, Amos/P.E.G/Paul Ekman, Ph.D. Paul Ekman (talk) 01:27, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Copyright question about a photograph taken of my deceased great-grandfather.
Hello Wiki Volunteer,
I am currently working on a profile for my great-grandfather; I would like to upload a few pictures of his, however, I do not know who the photographers where nor does anyone else in my family; some where taken many years ago.
How can I go ahead and upload a photo without any issue?
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,

- There are templates such as {{PD-heirs}} which might be used, but if you don't know the date or country where the photograph was taken, then it's going to be very difficult... AnonMoos (talk) 11:38, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- {{PD-heirs}} should only be used by the heirs of the copyright holder, which is typically the photographer rather than the subject of the photograph. If you don't know who created the photographs, then it is indeed going to be very difficult (by which I mean "probably impossible"). —LX (talk, contribs) 16:09, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

- If I understand correctly, you are complaining that the English Wikipedia article en:Gu Deng does not match the Chinese Wikipedia article zh:顧澄. Copyright: Upload redrawn figure from Article in Science Magazine
I want to use this picture for Wikipedia: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/336/6081/570/F6.expansion.html It is part from an article from the Science Magazine (abstract: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/336/6081/570.full.html)
As this is copyrighted I redrawn it with Gimp and added some more texts. Would uploading this self drawn picture be ok? On science mag I can get copyright access via rightslink (Copyright Clearance Center, copyright.com), but I did not find a fitting selection for a usage with Wikipedia. Has anyone experience with that? --MoreInput (talk) 21:20, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- This gets into deep legal waters of what is and is not a "derivative work" for purposes of copyright law. If you came up with a new graphic based on the same abstract scientific data, then that's generally OK, but if you just kind of traced the lines of a pre-existing copyrighted illustration, then that can be problematic. A non-"open access" science journal is rather unlikely to license its content under terms compatible with the requirements of Commmons... AnonMoos (talk) 11:43, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks you for this comment. Maybe I draw some more fancy stuff so that it is not a derivative work and upload it later. Or I get the permissions from the authors, if possible. --MoreInput (talk) 21:29, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Copyright question about license CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 DE
Hallo,
Hi,
I have got a few old maps I would like to upload and want to make sure I am on the save side. The scan is done by me from the original map and the creator of the original map is more than 70 years dead.
There is the name of the Publishing house printed onto the map.
Can you please advice if i can upload.

- There's a good chance, but it also depends on when and where it was first published. Do you have that information? —LX (talk, contribs) 20:04, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- it was published in Germany in 1914, hope this helps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Von damals (talk • contribs) 20:40, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

How to change description of uploaded file?
I uploaded an image file to wiki commons, and when asked to put in more information about the file, I didn't realize this text would become the figure caption by default. So the caption is now overly wordy and looks a little silly. Is there a way I can edit this? Or perhaps someone with more authority can edit it for me? The current text is seen in the photo:
I'd simply like to shorten it so that the caption reads: Banana screenhouse with a hail trap in the western Galilee of Northern Israel Thank you Ergraber (talk) 19:46, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you mean by the default image caption. Image captions are always what you type when you transclude the image in an article, not the image's description on Commns. For example the wikimarkup for the image on the right is
. Note that you could change the caption simply by changing the markup without changing the description on the file page. In my opinion, your description is fine and shouldn't be shortened. The Haz talk 18:39, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
My .pdf images look compressed vertically. What have I done wrong?
Often, uploading figures in .pdf that I have created, the rendering is unexpectedly a vertically compressed version of the original!
See for instance File:2014 2 26 PDs n PFD free running waveforms.pdf used in Wikibooks:User:BORGATO Pierandrea#Methods of frequency detection.
What is my mistake? How can I avoid it?
Thank you
BORGATO Pierandrea (talk) 14:19, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- It doesn't actually look vertically compressed to me. There are pretty bad JPEG compression artifacts, but the aspect ratio seems to be correct. What you could do is upload the images in a different file format. PDF is useful for multi-page documents, but for figures, SVG or PNG would be more suitable. SVG is better because the resulting files can be scaled, just like the PDF. Maybe your graphics program can produce SVG files. Otherwise, a good program to use is Inkscape. --rimshottalk 18:44, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)
Hi. When you go to upload a photo, this is not one of the options given for the copyright. Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, states: "You are free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, for any purpose, even commercially". Shouldn't this be on the list, and if so, I would I upload a picture with this copyright attribution? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onel5969 (talk • contribs) 15:34, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, you can use {{Cc-by-4.0}} as a licensing tag when uploading your own works or works by authors who have approved publication under that license. It is not yet possible to select version 4 of Creative Commons' licenses as default licenses in the Upload Wizard, but making version 4.0 the default has been discussed and will probably happen eventually. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:25, 28 February 2014 (UTC)
