Uploading files (my own) from Flickr

Can anyone help me with Flickr to Commons uploads? I just can't do it. I've been lucky to get some help from another user but the link to Toolserver is not right and there is another one for TUSC where I am supposed to register a TUSC account and it just doesn't work. Babydoll0409 (talk) 00:46, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Also discussed at User talk:Rept0n1x#Uploads from Flickr, Commons:Village pump#TUSC account creation problem and meta:Talk:TUSC#Cannot create account. I'm marking this section for archival to avoid further forking of the discussion. If anyone is able to provide assistance, please do so at one of the other pages (the latter two are probably the most appropriate venues). Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 10:58, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

TAJ MAHAL ASI Sl No

I couldn't find the ASI Identifier sl no for TAJ MAHAL so have to upload the pic with out the same. Please look into the same. it would be highly appreciable — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ankitbbsr (talk • contribs) 16:47, 18 September 2013‎ (UTC)

In my world, ASI stands for asynchronous serial interface, but I'm guessing you're looking for an Archaeological Survey of India number. To find that out, you'd first go to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in India/Get Started and, in step 2, follow the link to en:Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Wiki Loves Monuments. Knowing that the Taj Mahal is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, you'd then click through to en:List of Monuments of National Importance in Uttar Pradesh, en:List of Monuments of National Importance in Agra circle and finally en:List of Monuments of National Importance in Agra district to find that it's N-UP-A28. Alternatively, you just go to Category:Taj Mahal here on Commons, and the number is right there. I've fixed up File:JUST TAJ.jpg for you. LX (talk, contribs) 18:36, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

problem

Hi,

I am trying to upload photos and I succeded this morning but not any longer this night. Is there any limit in numbers uploded photos? I have tried different sizes but still it doesn´t work. Pls, help me as the time limit is running out on the 30th September.

Lennart Hammarstad (hstad) hstad@telia.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hstad (talk • contribs) 16:39, 29 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Hej Lennart! Since you mention 30 September as a deadline, I'm guessing your question was about the WLM 2013 contest (which has a help desk of its own). I'm sorry nobody answered before the deadline was up, but it looks like you were able to upload 35 more files after posting here. There is no limit to the number of files you can upload and no size limit that you're likely to run into with photos. Most likely, you encountered one of the many temporary problems with the Upload Wizard. Thank you for your contributions, I'm glad it looks like it worked eventually, and please note that you can always upload more photos to Commons even when there isn't a contest. If you have problems with the Upload Wizard, please try Commons:Upload instead; it tends to be much more reliable. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 17:21, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Photo of a poster in Italy

Hi there! Does this photo (CC BY-SA) of a poster infringe copyright? I guess it does as Italy has no freedom of panorama. Is this correct? Palosirkka (talk) 10:58, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Freedom of Panorama also often only applies to works permanently located on a public place and the works must be sometimes 3-dimensional.
I would not recommend uploading the photo you suggest to Commons because its main subject might be protected by copyright but you'd better ask this question at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Rillke(q?) 14:30, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Café.
It's a little difficult to understand your question based on Google's translation, but I'm guessing you're not actually asking for help with uploading files, since you successfully uploaded several files before asking. It sounds like you might be looking for es:Ayuda:Tutorial (imágenes). I hope that helps. Thank you for your contributions! LX (talk, contribs) 18:00, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Como puedo subir la foto de un personaje de Wikipedia ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antonio Panadero Contreras (talk • contribs) 18:27, 12 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Google translation: "How I can upload a photo of a character in Wikipedia"

Hi! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Café.
First, please read our project scope summary to understand what type of files you can and cannot upload to Commons. Then, if you have a file that meets our criteria, simply follow the instructions at Commons:Upload or Special:UploadWizard. I see that you have successfully uploaded File:FOTO DE SERGI PANADERO ARBAT.jpg, but I'm afraid that might need to be deleted. The reason for this is that I suspect you did not actually create it yourself. It looks like you took a photo of someone else's photo, and in that case, you cannot contribute the photo without the original photographer's permission. Hi! I'm sorry for responding in English, but it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Russian is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Форум.
It's a little difficult to understand your question based on Google's translation, but it doesn't sound like you're actually asking for help with uploading files. Rather, it sounds like you're asking about a file that has been deleted. File:filename has never existed on Commons; files here always have a filename suffix (and we tend to prevent the use of highly generic filenames). So far, three of the files you have uploaded have been deleted: File:Красноярск, зоопарк "Роев Ручей", аквариум".jpg, File:Юрий Худоногов. Стулья. холст, масло. 1966 год.JPG and File:Худоногов Юрий, художник.jpg; you can see the reasons by clicking on the filenames. It looks like they were all deleted for copyright reasons. Again, I don't know if the Google translation is correct, but downloading files from the Internet does not make them your own work. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 18:50, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

You can upload a new version of a file by clicking the "Subir una nueva versión de este archivo" link at the end of the "Historial del archivo" section of the file description page. LX (talk, contribs) 18:58, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Removing Wrong versions of Files

Trying to upload two files you removed, which were the correct versions. Don't understand how to indicate which older versions I want removed. Could you help me upload the two files you removed? Thank you.Rudrene (talk) 13:44, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

First, you'll have to give the names of the files in question. Then, to point out a specific revision of a file, the easiest way is usually just to state the date and time it was uploaded. LX (talk, contribs) 16:46, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Kia Ora, I have several listings on my website www.whangareiflora.weebly.com that are not listed on your files, notably Peperomia urvilleana, which contains text and photographs, however, I am afraid I am finding the process of adding this information to your files very confusing. So, if you wish to take it off my website, feel free, Dennis Scoles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SCOLES (talk • contribs) 15:28, 9 October 2013‎ (UTC)

If I understand correctly, you wish to contribute photographs that you have created and that have been previously published at http://www.whangareiflora.weebly.com. That's very generous of you. Unfortunately, a statement such as "feel free to take photos off my website" isn't sufficient for us to host them. For Wikimedia Commons to host your photos, you'll have to agree to publication under a copyright license that allows anyone to use the photos in original or modified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. If you're okay with that, the easiest way to proceed is to add a notice like "This work by D. Scoles is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license" (if that's the attribution and license you like) at the bottom of the page or underneath specific photos. Then, you can either upload them here yourself or shout out and hope that someone else volunteers to do it. LX (talk, contribs) 17:00, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

I want to upload a photograph copyrighted 1934, which was not renewed by the publisher. In the upload wizard I described the source of the photograph and provided information on the publisher and date. I thought I correctly entered the tag as

Public domain
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1963, and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart and the copyright renewal logs. Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.

Hi, I uploaded an image I found on this website http://www.sci-news.com/space/science-new-type-impact-craters-mars-01448.html. Its about a very recent discovery on Mars. Please refer to this image and tell me: 1. Whether I can upload it? (with due image credit and references); and 2. If yes, would this image be considered in public domain? Exactly what options to choose while providing licensing info (for this image).--Jai Ho 02:32, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

The page you link to credits the image to Northern Arizona University. A more detailed black and white version appears in http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/1196.pdf, which suggests that it was created by THEMIS. Obviously, NASA has been involved in the creation of the image, and works exclusively created by NASA are in the public domain as works of the US Federal Government. Whether or not the image is in the public domain and can be uploaded to Commons depends on the extent to which other actors that are not part of the US Federal Government contributed copyrightable elements to the final image. I haven't been able to determine that. LX (talk, contribs) 19:54, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

own work?

If I took a picture, but someone else does minor editing, can I still call it my own work? Thanks, --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 23:07, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

It depends on how minor the editing is. For example, the act of cropping a picture does not attract copyright protection, while cloning out specks of dust might. LX (talk, contribs) 19:59, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
The editing in question was adjusting the contrast and lighting. --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 20:46, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
That could be a borderline case depending on the method used (a simple brightness and contrast filter versus a more complex color curves adjustment) and the relevant jurisdiction, but I'd say it's probably pretty far over on the "don't worry about it" end of the spectrum. Is the person who made the adjustment asserting that their work is copyrightable, and if so, are they not willing to release their work under a free license? Difficulty uploading another file, the previous one having been deleted

Having had a previously uploaded image file deleted [YKW Statue in Xiamen_YHO.jpg], due to lack of permission from author, I sent an e-mail to 'Permissions' from the author in which he gives his permission for using the image file in Wikipedia. I then discovered that the file has been deleted. When I tried to upload the file again to Commons, I got the following error message: "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." and I am unable to advance further. I tried again with the file renamed to: YKW Statue in Xiamen_YHO_2.jpg, only to get the same error message.

Please advise how I can advance further. Duncan.france (talk) 09:47, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

If you followed the instructions and the permission that you have sent in meets our requirements, the file will be restored without any further action needed on your behalf. The processing time for permissions in English is currently about three weeks. However, a permission limited to use in Wikipedia is not sufficient for hosting on Commons, so if that's what you got, the file won't get restored (but you should still get a response from our volunteers). You should not try to reupload previously deleted files yourself, as doing so may result in your account being blocked. LX (talk, contribs) 20:11, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia2Commons; New Upload tool causing trouble

Why is there an upload tool that suddenly makes uploading files from Wikipedia to the Wikimedia Commons more difficult than it should be? I just uploaded File:McKenna Theater; SUNY @ New Paltz.jpg, and it forced me to add the license and the original upload log manually, which itself is broken. My previous attempt to upload an image from Wikipedia was just as difficult. I've never had any problems with this until this year. ----DanTD (talk) 01:22, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free media files, primarily for use by the other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia. We primarily host images, audio and video. While we do host PDF files in some cases, this is only done for a very limited set of purposes. We are not a free web host for original research articles in read-only formats. If the article is within the project scope of another Wikimedia project, it should be added there directly as editable wiki text. LX (talk, contribs) 12:11, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Don't overwrite the original file; upload a new file with a different name, put {{Extracted from|Multy_droplets_impact.JPG}} or similar in the "Source" field, put something like "User:Lbeaumont based on image by Mila / Brocken Inaglory" in the author field, and keep the same license...
