Copyright help regarding File:COA Chair, Gamaliel Cordoba.jpg
--ArtSeeArtDoo (talk) 13:47, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
Hello, I would like to know how I can apply Licensing to this particular upload. It is the same as this:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gamaliel_Cordoba_(cropped).png
The one I uploaded is just the more recent version of Cordoba's profile photo.
- @ArtSeeArtDoo: looks like it's already correctly done. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- yes finally figured it out :) thank you! ArtSeeArtDoo (talk) 03:23, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

File upload: Logo and copyright permissions
Hi there,
I would like to upload the logo of my employer MA Financial Group. Given this relationship what is the copyright guidelines of the 'file' that need to be applied, alongside any other accreditation.
Thanks Kjh124567 (talk) 01:30, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Kjh124567: Are we talking about the logo that's just a stylized "MA" with some of the lines missing, and then to the right of that the name of the organization? If so, that would just be {{PD-text-logo}} {{Trademarked}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Jmabel - yes that's correct. I think I've updated it correctly. Thank you Kjh124567 (talk) 05:43, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Upload a picture with watermark
Dear sir or madam
I asked the admins of the page parthava.org to upload following image to one of my articles and they gave their ok with a certain licence and copyright, according to wikipedia standards: https://www.parthava.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/001_a_Pahla_Region-1200x791.jpg
However, the image has watermark signs in it. Is this a problem for wikimedia or wikipedia-media? Are there any restrictions or quality requirements?
Best --Parthavian (talk) 12:00, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Parthavian: You may find Commons:Watermarks to be helpful. To summarise the main points, it is best to upload images without watermarks. Watermarks are discouraged, but they are permitted if they meet certain requirements. (You can find these in the information page I linked to) Mako001 (C) (T) 🇺🇦 12:05, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- Also, make sure that the image is compatible with the copyright licensing used on Wikimedia Commons. Mako001 (C) (T) 🇺🇦 12:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

The file was made by my father who died and I am the owner, how should I describe it? Boazraviv (talk) 13:32, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Boazraviv: "The file was made" is a little ambiguous, but assuming we are talking about a photograph he took, you should describe him as the photographer/author, and (presuming you inherited his intellectual property rights) use an "heirs" license template, like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 17:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

An unwelcome artifact on Deletion requests pages
At Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg, I was trying to present a visual example (what I added with this edit), and I get the unwelcome artifact of "[keep] [del] [qd]" appearing next to each transcluded image. Is there some way to prevent that? (I hate "automagic" side effects like that, where the exact same wikisyntax means different things in a different namespace!). - Jmabel ! talk 22:26, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Image modification
Hi all. Recently I modified Steelpole13.jpg to remove a drop shadow present on the image. I am wondering if this was a good idea and if it is not any copyright violation? I usually never see photos with extra effects such as drop shadow on Wikipedia and elsewhere and so I assumed that it was extraneous and went about the process of removing it. I seem to have increased the filesize, I apologise if I was not supposed to do that. Cheers. Theki (talk) 03:45, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Theki: Given that it has been through VRT, I presume it is fine, but you could ask on the Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard if you have doubts.
- Yeah, that drop shadow is pretty weird, but normally, I wouldn't overwrite an apparently deliberate choice like that. I'd put the crop at a different filename. Have you read COM:OVERWRITE? - Jmabel ! talk 05:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- I have looked over it, yes; I assumed it fell under the "minor cropping" rule, as I reckon the drop shadow was only used to give the website it was embedded on some distinct flair/stand out which seemed unnecessary outside of it, on Wikipedia etc.. I tried finding other files that went through similar changes on Commons to see if it was a generally accepted kind of thing. Perhaps it would have been better to upload the cropped version as a separate file and use that on the article page? In that case would that not make the original redundant? All of the images on w:Steel Pole Bath Tub have this same shadow and I assume come from the same location on the website, and I'm wondering what the best way to work with this would be. Help with image

copyright type
I want to upload three photographs of paintings done by my father. He was a professional painter and he died 1991. The legacy of my fathers work is currently in possession of my family. which copyright type should I select? Christoph breitkreuz (talk) 13:11, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- You are free to choose the licence. To use the standard {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, give {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} as the licence (note the "-heir", there should be similar templates for other common licences). Depending on your (or his) jurisdiction, there may be a need for consensus among his heir. Regardless, as these are valuable works, I think you should write VRT. They should be able to tell what documentation they want, probably a scan of an agreement among heirs and of some document showing there aren't other people who could claim to have rights to the paintings. –LPfi (talk) 13:54, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Help with moving a category
I am uploading files of paintings in museums and I have noticed that the Category:Paintings in Kunsthaus Zürich should be named Paintings in the Kunsthaus Zürich. The subcategories mostly have the The and most of the other Kunsthaus from any city also have a the. Now if I want to move it, it tells me that then only the category will be moved but not the paintings included in the category. My idea would be move the category and then do an AWB run through the category, but I have no experience with that. Anyone has a better idea or can help me with my problem? Wikimedia license doesn't match source license - which do I use?
Hello,
I'm not sure who I'm reaching here, if this is a forum or support team. Either way, I appreciate any assistance that can be offered.
Lately I've been following source links on wikimedia commons pages and finding that often the license on that page doesn't match the one on Wikimedia commons. For example, on wikimedia it might say it's 2.0 without any mention of commercial use, then on the source page (often Flickr) it will indicate the image should not be used for commercial purposes. I assume that is because the creator adjusted the license after it was collected by WC. I've been trusting wikimedia and don't know how many images I've already used without checking the source page, so this is concerning, if the adjusted license trumps what was originally verified by WC. Another thing that happens is that the source page will say all rights reserved, when that is not reflected on wikimedia commons. One example is here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Korean.Dance-Buchaechum-01.jpg and its source at https://www.flickr.com/photos/photoren/420376513/.
So I guess my main question is, are we able to use images under the original license, or do we have to follow the source's present indications?
Okay thank you! 73.127.79.139 15:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- ah, i see at the bottom of the page "When this file was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, it was available from Flickr under the stated license. The Flickr user has since stopped distributing the file under this license. As Creative Commons licenses cannot be revoked in this manner, the file is still free to use under the terms of the license specified. See the Creative Commons FAQ on revoking licensing." 73.127.79.139 16:03, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking! Creative Commons free licenses are not revocable. In the case of the linked image, the cc-by-2.0 by the author/copyright holder was confirmed when the image was copied to Commons in 2007. Sometime since then, the Flickr user has apparently changed the license there. The older license however is still valid. See Creative Commons FAQ. (I have added a template noting that the Flickr user has changed license). For you as a reuser, it depends on what you want to reuse the image for; in this case it seems you have 2 options you can take your pick of. It you want to show it was verified cc-by-2.0, include a link to the Commons page. (If you see other cases where licenses do not match sources, but the license was NOT confirmed, unlike in this case, there may be a problem or inappropriate upload, and you can list the image for deletion discussion.) Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:11, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- Also, notice that on Flickr pages where the license has changed, you can access the "license history", though apparently they only go back to some time in 2008, so in this particular case there is no way to verify the original license. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Chappell & Co Ltd (London)
The image on this article page: Love Is here To Stay is in the public domain due to the fact that Chappell & Co Ltd (London) no longer holds copyright to sheet music published before a certain date within the United States. - @Maineartists: What is your basis for saying the "Love Is Here To Stay" sheet music is out of copyright in the U.S.? Do you specifically know that copyright was not renewed (in which case you should be using something like {{PD-US-not renewed}})? 1938 works published in the U.S., if renewed, will not be public domain until 2034.- Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Replacing an animation
I am trying to upload a new version of an animation I have created (Threecolouranimation.gif (134 × 134 pixels, file size: 68 KB, MIME type: image/gif, looped, 32 frames, 3.2 s)) in which two of the colours are reversed compared to the previous version. When I try and do this I get the error message "The upload is an exact duplicate of the current version of File:Threecolouranimation.gif." Uploading main photo
I'm trying to upload a photo to my page for "Selan" (full name, Selan Lerner). I'm Selan Lerner by the way. I'm signed in (username is "selonius") and have watched several different tutorial videos, but it's not working for me. I'm following the instructions step by step and the prompts are not not coming up that the video says should be appearing. I'm able to edit the text of the page but it won't allow me to upload a photo. Selonius (talk) 15:52, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Selonius: By "my page" I assume you mean en:Selan.
- It looks like you've successfully uploaded File:Selan and Nile Rodgers working together in a recording studio.jpg, File:Selan CHIC white.JPG, File:Selan performing with CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers in 2012.jpg. (Aside: I envy you getting to work with Nile Rodgers! Great musician, great person.)
- One thing you need urgently to sort out here, without which these will probably be deleted: clearly these are not your "own work". You are in the photo. Someone else took it. You need to credit them accurately, and they, not you, own the copyright (unless it's been formally transferred). Besides crediting accurately, you need to have the copyright-holder do one of the following:
- publish the image on a site or page clearly under their control (e.g. their own website as a photographer) with an explicit grant of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. Then you can cite that as a source.
- go through the process described at COM:VRT to confirm the license.
- If copyright was formally transferred to you, then you are the one who needs to go through COM:VRT and send them a copy of the transfer document, but you should still credit the actual photographer.
- The photographer will also probably want to indicate how, exactly, they should be credited as photographer for third-party reuse.
- As for the technical addition to the article, you can just put (for example) [[File:Selan performing with CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers in 2012.jpg|thumb|CAPTION GOES HERE]] in the wikitext, and the picture will appear. I would just do that for you right now, but there is no point to doing it until you sort out the copyright/licensing issue because, as I said, without sorting that out these will just be deleted anyway. Copyright belongs to the photographer, not the subject. - Jmabel ! talk 18:27, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- Also, while this is not a Commons issue: I see you made major edits to the article about yourself, to the point of being its primary author. You've almost certainly violated the English-language Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. I strongly recommend that you read that policy and do what you can to set things right, because otherwise you will almost certainly find yourself banned from the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Selonius To put it blunt: All three images you uploaded show charactistics of images stolen from Social Media. If the fotographer actually had transferred the rights to you, the images would probably have larger resolution, larger filesize and more plausible EXIF. Maybe you should ask for a courtesy deletion of these images or else hurry to find the fotographer and ask them to donate the images to commons, otherwise they may be deleted within a week. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 18:44, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- @C.Suthorn: "stolen" is an awfully strong word. Most people don't understand copyright law in depth, and assume that as the subject of a photo they hold rights that they don't hold. And "donate these images to commons" suggests a similar misunderstanding on your part: Commons does not own images. I've licensed tens of thousands of photos I took and placed them here. I still own the copyrights of all of those images, and Commons no more owns them than you do. They are here under a license, you can use them under a license, I continue to own them.
- I've already told the user what he needs to sort out. There's no need to smash him over the head. - Jmabel ! talk 20:23, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

New page approval
Hi all, I made a new page last month but I'm not sure how long things usually take to get approval to go live. Can anyone shed any light please? Jblcfc1884 (talk) 10:50, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Jblcfc1884. I think you might be mixing up Commons with English Wikipedia. The primary role of Commons is to host media files; it's not really set up to host encyclopedic articles. The page you seem to be asking about is your English Wikipedia user sandbox en:User:Jblcfc1884/sandbox. What might be confusing you is the meaning of the button "Publish changes": it doesn't mean "publish" in the sense of "publish a new article", but rather "publish" as in "save the changes made during a particular editing session". In other words, drafts for articles aren't automatically added to English Wikipedia as en:Wikipedia:Articles by clicking "Publish changes"; they should instead be submitted for review as explained in en:Wikipedia:Articles for creation. You can ask about more about this at either en:Wikipedia:Teahouse or en:Wikipedia:Help desk (asking at one of the two pages is fine). You also might want to take a look at en:Wikipedia:Notability (events) because whether your draft is ultimately accepted as an article is going to depend on whether the event is considered en:Wikipedia:Notable. Finally, the members of the en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Running or en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany might be able to help you assess the Wikipedia notability of the event. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:16, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

How to merge The Way of the World and The Way of the World (1916 film)
Hi is there a Commons way to merge categories? I'm fine if someone does the edits for me, but I'd like if someone could describe the steps too!

The Republic of Rio Grande
The current flag is incorrect and I am trying to change it to the true flag. I have a copy of it in my files and won’t let me update the picture. This needs to be address since this is a false image of the real flag. I am from there and would like to correct the error. ElDanyC (talk) 20:36, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
- @ElDanyC: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Your account is too new to be allowed to overwrite an existing file. But you probably shouldn't overwrite the file for this kind of thing anyway. Better to upload your flag under its own name (for instance using Special:UploadWizard. Then you can replace the uses on the English Wikipedia as appropriate. This is especially true if anyone might disagree about what the "true" flag is. Based on en:Talk:Flag of the Republic of the Rio Grande it's clear that there's at least some uncertainty about this. --bjh21 (talk) 22:05, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Can I use Wikimedia to display a local history society's archives?
I belong to a local history society in England. We have perhaps 5000 paper records and articles which we want to scan and put on the internet for public access. Many other local history societies have created their own websites for a similar purpose, but we are reluctant to reinvent the wheel yet again by creating our own small website. We would much prefer to use an existing system for displaying our content. Can we do this on Wikimedia, or on any other of the Wiki family systems? Thanks for your help, Ian Black Whistian (talk) 10:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Whistian The Wikisource project may be, what you are looking for. They have specific rules: Upload the material, than transcribe (manually (not OCR!), but with tools they provide), than have it corrected by other contributors, who will do that only, if you also correct material from other contributors. But it is probably the best way to go. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:51, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Whistian: I second the Wikisource recommendation. (To be clear, Wikisource does use OCR as the basis for transcriptions, with manual correction and formatting afterwards. You also don't have to commit to correcting other users' transcriptions.) I recommend checking out s:en:Help:Contents and s:en:Wikisource:What Wikisource includes, and I'm also happy to answer any questions you might have!
- If your records are in the public domain (or otherwise freely licensed) in the UK and in the US, the scans can be hosted on Commons, and hopefully then transcribed on Wikisource. (You don't have to commit to transcribing them before you upload.) If they're in the public domain in the US but not in the UK, they can be hosted on Wikisource, but I don't know what the relevant laws about that are for you in the UK. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk • contribs) 01:19, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your advice. I’ve looked at Wikipedia, and W Commons, which look promising, but hadn’t thought of Wikisource. I’ll have a look, particularly at the OCR to make the scans searchable. Thanks, Whistian 80.3.231.206 06:55, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, very helpful, particularly about OCR. I’ll investigate Wikisource. Whistian 80.3.231.206 06:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

自分自身で写した、たとえばiPhoneで自分自身の写真を撮ってウィキペディア・コモンズにアップロードするのは可? Carlostad (talk) 02:55, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Carlostad: There are two circumstances under which such a picture would be welcome:
- If you make significant contributions to Commons or to some other WMF project, then it is reasonable to have a small number of personal photos for your User page on any given WMF wiki. However, since the question above appears to be your first contribution to any WMF projects, you would not yet qualify to do that. Make a few dozen useful contributions before you upload a selfie on this basis (and then use it on your user page, or it will be deleted as an unused personal photo).
- If you happen to be "notable" -- e.g. if there is a Wikipedia article about you, or you play a significant role in something about which there is an article, Commons category, etc. -- then, sure. But I'm guessing that is not the case, or you probably would have mentioned it.
- In short: probably not, but if you become an active user here, then eventually you would be welcome to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 06:37, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- There is a third circumstance: If you have an interesting talent - lets say juggling - and you make a photo of yourself demonstrating this talent and it is an useful depiction of the talent, then you can do that. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 13:52, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

how illustrate quality of an image
I'm seeking to update a Wikipedia article on "Active-Matrix Liquid Crystal Display." A prior contributor claimed that the "first functional AMLCD" was made at Westinghouse in 1972. Descriptions of their work indicate that they were only able to display a very low resolution "image" without grey scale; it had 36 pixels as I recall. At the time, in competition, Hughes Aircraft Company was working on building a 100x100 10,000 pixel Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display. The concept was granted patent 3,862,360 on 01Jan.'75. In contrast to the Westinghouse approach, Hughes was showing live off-the-air television on its display. I'd like to be able to teach the state of the art at that time by presenting an photo of the display displaying a facsimile of a photo that had been published in a magazine.
To my knowledge, the Hughes was the first to demonstrate recognizable moving images on a liquid crystal display panel. At another time I can tell the story of why Hughes did not follow through to make it into the commercial product that it has become.
The photo teaches the state of the art of Hughes’ display technology in 1975. The photo was taken by a photographer from the Hughes Aircraft Company photo laboratory in Culver City.
The image, shows a low-resolution facsimile of a portion of an image of a woman as it was being displayed on a liquid crystal display. The display shows a facsimile of a photo originally printed in a magazine on photography; its poor quality renders it useless for commercial opportunities.
A similar image of the same face was published in the “Electronics” magazine, February 19,1976, page 29. In 1976, Electronics magazine was published by McGraw-Hill Inc. ; it ceased publication in 1995. A publication clearance was obtained prior to the appearance of the photo in Electronics magazine, but the documentation has since been lost.
The image was also published In the "HUGHES NEWS," Vol 35, No. 6, March 19, 1976, page 1.
Although a similar image can be found on the Internet, the low quality of the image does not communicate the status of the technology in 1975. The image can be found in the IR Handbook edited by Wolfe & Zissis, published by the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan for the Office of Naval Research, Dept. of the Navy, Washington DC., 1978 An electronic copy of the handbook can be found at https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA100015.pdf, and the image appears on page 18-14, web page 1261 of 1765. I am cited as a contributor to that handbook on page viii.
Is there a way to present a better quality image to Wikipedia readers? LAwindsailor (talk) 21:22, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Threshold of originality
Take a look at w:File:Junkee Media.png. Surely this does not pass the threshold of originality, right? It's a simple typeset with a rotated square (diamond) in the centre. I'm aware that different places have different agreements on what surpasses and what does not surpass the threshold, but I'm curious as to if this even needs a non-free media use rationale? It seems to me like it doesn't pass. I'm asking this partially because I want to know if it's okay to transfer this to Commons in the first place as it doesn't seem like it'd do any wrong. Cover Art
Hello. If I were to upload the cover art for a song or an album, how would I Legally do that? Cherrell410 (talk) 00:53, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Cherrell410: Assuming this is talking about uploads to Commons (as against some context such as a record review where "fair use" might be allowed), and we are not talking about (for example) century-old artwork, the answer is almost always going to be, "only by having an explicit, sufficiently free license granted by the copyright-holder of the artwork in question." Most cover art is copyrightable and, in most countries, copyrightable work is automatically copyrighted at creation. Only the holder of the copyright can grant a meaningful license to use their work. - Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

- Hi, you are probably referring to w:File:What Are We Waiting For? - For King & Country.jpg which is actually uploaded to Wikipedia which is separate from Commons. Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be freely used by anyone for any purpose, including: use in any work, creation of derivative works, commercial use and free distribution. ‘Fair Use’ criteria does not apply here: see Fair Use on Commons. HOWEVER; Wikipedia, itself (i.e. not Commons) may allow the hosting and limited use of a low resolution ‘non-free’ image in an article, where the item is itself the subject of the article, as this may constitute ‘Fair Use’. A detailed Rationale must be provided to show how the criteria for this are met – a reviewing editor will have the final say on this. Please have a read through the policy and guidelines at Wikipedia:Non-free content and Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. A Fair Use template would then be attached to the Wikipedia image file page – it also includes a useful summary of instructions for the uploader. - @BhamBoi: the image there is a JPEG, so whatever problem you are having is not about the file type. Just to make sure you know: you can't upload to Commons directly from an arbitrary Internet site. You need to download this to your computer, then upload to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:59, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- I downloaded it. I clicked "original", saved image, then it was a .jfif BhamBoi (talk) 01:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah to update, I tried again. When you right click and press save on it, it says it is saving as a JPEG. But as soon as you actually save it, it's in your files as a JFIF. Any ideas? BhamBoi (talk) 02:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- @BhamBoi: Bunches of converters online, but I've never tried one. Also probably convertible by GIMP, ImageMagick, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- Most likely it is a jpeg, but the file extension is for some reason jfif. If that is the case, than renaming it to jpg, jpeg or JPeG should be enough to upload at commons. There is a lossless variant of jpeg (jpeg2000?) that is patented and not allowed at commons. In that case loading with gimp and saving with a quality of 99% or less should do the trick. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 04:07, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
- JFIF is actually JPEG. Sometimes files found online have a different extension than a standard, which may fool Commons into thinking the file type is not supported. If you rename the
.jfif
extension into.jpg
, Commons should actually accept the file with no issues (if you are on Windows, you may need to disable "Hide known file extensions" option in Windows Explorer settings, Linux users shouldn't have this issue). If Commons still reject the file for being of an unsupported file type, then use a conversion tool or open it in a graphics editor (GIMP is a free and open source alternative to let's say Photoshop) and simply save the opened image as JPEG, with the.jpg
extension. Polda18 D C 09:31, 9 May 2023 (UTC) - @BhamBoi: Thank you for uploading File:Ken Hon (P1030368).jpg. - Pixels in jpeg files are always square. In most videos, the pixels are also square, but they can also have any other aspect ratio. Therefore, the aspect ratio of the pixels is also stored in videos. This is possibly one such video, and the image extraction has naively assumed square pixels. Downloading the video and using ffmpeg to extract an image could already be the solution. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:44, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 09:05, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ok. I would still prefer OGG Vorbis or Opus than MP3. Reason behind this is that OGG and Opus are arguiably better formats, more efficient and better quality, while maitaining the same bitrate. MP3 format however used to be licensed, especially the codec was licensed. That means the format wasn't always free. Polda18 D C 10:04, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

- @Nathaniel Gambao: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload mp3 files with insufficient rights and another filter. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:56, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think all national anthems are in the public domain (PD). In some countries there is special legislation making them PD, but mostly they follow normal copyright laws. If the score (and text, if sung) isn't very old it may very well be under copyright: for most countries copyright extends 70 years after the composer's death. Additionally the performance and recording may be protected. –LPfi (talk) 14:03, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- The last being the most important: for most recordings of PD works, the recordings themselves will be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 15:31, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel and LPfi: Yes, it depends on the jurisdiction of the country. Majority of countries however utilize special law which makes all works related to government (including national anthems) public domain. Recording is something else, as if it isn't performed by a state orchestra, then copyright exception doesn't apply. State orchestra may release their performance of national anthem in public domain, required by law. Most of the time the uploader should be fine. However one should always refer to COM:CRT for more informations about what they can and cannot upload on Commons regard of the country of origin. Polda18 D C 18:53, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, to me it's surprising how few countries make gov't works other than actual legal documents, etc., public domain. Far less common than I would have expected - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- In Germany a legal issue at the moment: Government says documents commissioned by the state are copyrighted, citizen rights activists (fragdenstaat.de) say, these documents can never be copyrigthed, they were paid for by the tax payer, therefore everyone has a right to get and use them in any way. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 04:45, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, Germany is like that. Their federal police symbols are also copyrighted, you cannot use them in any way without a license, and therefore those symbols cannot be found on Commons eighter. And German Wikipedia doesn't allow Fair Use, so you can't find it there eighter. Czechia does actually issue government documents in public domain, that's by law. That includes our national anthem as well. I'm not sure about the status of a performance by an official state philharmonic orchestra though, and I don't know if the sound file even is on Commons. Money though, and I mean the design, is rarely copyright protected. Polda18 D C 07:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

External links to images in categories
I've been working on Category:Cooke Centenary Presbyterian Church, Belfast today following through the NLI image posted to Flickr today creating a wikidata item/infobox etc. I came across this good faith contribution by Special:Diff/672244816 by @Ulamm: but am unsure if external linked images like this are permitted, even if useful. Thankyou -- DeirgeDel tac 17:53, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- I've had no response here for 24hrs for I've good faith removed the link as I think it sets a bad precedent if nothing else. If anyone wishes to restore it pleas gain discussion consensus first and point to policies, guidelines and/or practices in making the argument to re-instate it. Thankyou. -- DeirgeDel tac 17:46, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- @DeirgeDel: Sorry not to have gotten there sooner. External links on category pages are certainly acceptable, but a link directly to a photo like this, with no author or copyright info, probably is not. For example, Category:62-68 South Washington Street (Seattle) is a fairly good example of getting it right. By the time you get to the third-party photo, there is plenty of context. - Jmabel ! talk 18:44, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Using a photo used in an italian wiki page in a english wiki page
The italian wiki page of Enrico Piaggio has of photo of him. The english page has no photo and I would like to add the same as in the italian page. It seems that I have to upload it again and in the process I am asked if what I am uploading "is my own work". Clearly it isn't. Nonetheless being used in another wiki page, I would guess there is no problem. Is it correct? Thanks Claudio.Carmeli (talk) 05:45, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Claudio.Carmeli: : The file you are referring to is w:it:File:Enrico piaggio.jpg. It is stated there that file cannot be loaded here to commons for copyright reasons. As the person is died it is possible to load a minimal image of the person under fair-use/non-free cootent criterial to accompany the article w:en:Enrico Piaggio. See for example w:Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide. My impression of w:it:File:Enrico piaggio.jpg is that it would need to be tastefully cropped about the head and shoulders to get the required size/resolution. The process then is to use w:en:Wikipedia:File upload wizard selecting Upload a non-free file or alternatively see if anyone will help out at w:en:Wikipedia:Files for upload. You should probably ask for further help at the English Wikipedia if you need it, I am blocked from helping you there. -- DeirgeDel tac 07:47, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

- @IRIS ALBARRAN MILLAN you made this request at Commons. Commons is an image databade. If your exhusband uploaded any images, you can ask for these to be deleted, but you will have to provide a way to identify these images. If your exhusband is writing bad about you, then he is probably doing that on one of the sister projects (like en.wikipedia.org, or any other of >800 projects within Wikipedia). In that case you have to request help at the specific project. If your exhusband is defaming you on multiple projects, you may get help at meta.wikimedia.org and in an extreme case he may get a global ban. Uploading Photographs from a Mediæval Manuscript
Hi,
I am unsure about whether I may be able to upload photographs I took of a Mediæval manuscript that I was permitted to view at Hereford Cathedral - that being a Wycliffe Bible of 1420. The Cathedral staff told me I am permitted to share the photos, although I must give full credit to the Cathedral & its library for them, and they cannot be used for monetary gain. Would this condition prevent me from being allowed to upload them to the collection of examples of Scribal Abbreviations (the category linked below)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Category:Scribal abbreviations. Nusrich 06 (talk) 11:43, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Nusrich 06: The Cathedral staff has no right on your pictures of a public domain document. So you can publish them on Commons (or elsewhere) under the conditions you choose. On Commons, the images should be under a free license. However it is usually nice to mention the Cathedral staff for permitting you to take pictures, and more generally for taking care of this document. Yann (talk) 11:55, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice! Nusrich 06 (talk) 14:29, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
How to keep lists of items I'm interested in?
Hello! I often use Wikimedia Commons to find useful items like images or video clips to incorporate into my projects. However, it is really hard for me to keep track of the items I've viewed and want to remember. Is there a way within Wikimedia Commons for me to keep lists of the items I'm interested in in one place? I know there is the Watchlist, but there doesn't seem to be a way to categorise/organise things in that list, and I might not actually want to watch for changes, just a way to remember items. The Triple-Golden Triangle
I have revised my illustration of "The Triple-Golden Triangle". I moved the triangle's measurements onto and into the triangle (rather than listing them below the triangle). Then I used an online service to convert the PDF file to an SVG file. Is there anything else that I should do to make the file acceptable?
I wrote this draft file description. Is this sufficient?
[draft description] The obtuse triangle shown here has (1) one pair of sides in Golden Ratio, (2) one pair of internal acute angles in Golden Ratio, and (3) a "Golden Angle" and a reflex angle. The Golden Angle and the reflex angle are in Golden Ratio with each other. Scott Gregory Beach (talk) 16:34, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

"Missing SDC copyright status"
What does it mean when there is a Category message saying my uploaded photo is "Missing SDC copyright status"? Muzilon (talk) 09:48, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Muzilon: , SDC stands for Structured Data on Commons. Structured data is extra information on a file 'behind the scenes', which helps with its processing and is also machine-readable. The message just means the copyright notice, which you can see on the main file page, hasn't been transferred to structured data yet. It shows it has been placed together in a category with similar files for a bot to work through to make the transfer into structured data. Have a read of the above link for more info. FotoFree (talk) 14:41, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Muzilon: possibly more to the point, it is a technical maintenance category that doesn't concern anyone but the bot accounts doing this particular maintenance. - 16:34, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

What exact license does Sony Music Entertainment Sweden use?
Sony Music Entertainment Sweden has released a bunch of promotional pictures under a Creative Commons license: https://www.mynewsdesk.com/se/sonybmg/images/
However, when I upload the pictures I'm a bit unsure on what license to select because they don't specify what license they use. They have the following text under every image (taken from this image:
Creative Commons erkännande
Med en Creative Commons-licens, behåller du din upphovsrätt men tillåter andra människor att kopiera och distribuera ditt verk under förutsättning att de erkänner dig som upphovsman. Du tillåter andra att kopiera, distribuera, visa och framföra verket, samt att skapa bearbetningar av det.
Translated using Google Translate:
Creative Commons Attribution
With a Creative Commons license, you retain your copyright but allow other people to copy and distribute your work provided they acknowledge you as the author. You permit others to copy, distribute, display and perform the work, as well as to create adaptations of it.
So what license do I select when uploading: Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0, Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0, Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5, or one of their non-ShareAlike counterparts?
FromtheEndofElo (talk) 07:38, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- I interprete the google translation you provided to mean, that the work is published "cc-by" without requiring a specific version. That would allow you to upload as cc-by-4.0. The 4.0-version is the newest and the only that does not suffer from a fault, that all former versions had (described in Cory Doctorow's articles). - No, of course not. It has a non free use rationale and cannot be hosted on commons or used on other wikipedias without a fair use policy. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 10:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- That's unfair; works with non-free use rationales at the English Wikipedia are frequently uploaded here. I think I could make an argument for PD in the US, but China's laws offer more protection for text calligraphy.--Prosfilaes (talk) 14:23, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- Those uploads are eighter copyvio (and therefore quickly deleted afterwards), or the copyright simply expired and therefore those works can be uploaded. Nothing unfair here. Polda18 D C 09:35, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- Logos like the one being questioned frequently fall under the threshold of originality, and it's not particularly clear whether they do. People upload them to the English Wikipedia and slap a non free rationale on them without even considering whether they are PD-simple.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:16, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- That's also one possible explanation. To be fair though, it's sometimes quite hard to tell, especially if you don't specifically know the country of origin. Take a look at COM:TOO#Czech Republic
The work must be "a unique outcome of the creative activity of the author".[121/2000–2006 Art.2(1)]
For photographs and computer programs, it suffices if the work "is original in the sense that it is the author’s own intellectual creation".[121/2000–2006 Art.2(2)]- You don't really know where the threshold is from this particular legalese text. It could mean anything. Polda18 D C 06:48, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Are these images public domain?
Do these images qualify under PD-USGov-EPA? I can't understand the copyright disclaimers section on the EPA website. BhamBoi (talk) 04:51, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- From what I understand, it doesn't provide any information on who actually took the photos. Have you tried to research that, such as examining the metadata? Your approach appears to be one of "Why, I found so-and-so on such-and-such website, so therefore...", which accounts for a substantial amount of this site's problematic content as it is. Piecemeal DRs aren't going to cure that problem.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:58, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- These will be under the standard EPA license as they are not marked otherwise. The problem is that is don't know if that is PD-USGov or the vague license restrictions from their website. BhamBoi (talk) 06:04, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

- First of all, the document is marked as your own work, which I assume is incorrect. I'm not sure if the document can be considered public domain, so I'll leave that up to someone more competent. As to the article in Catalan Wikipedia: what you have to do is to provide references that prove the notability and factual accuracy of the subject presented. References should be from independent sources, which means that there shouldn't be a serious doubt about the source independency on the subject matter. Also, references should be inserted using
<ref>source</ref>
directly in text providing direct sourcing for claims in the article text. The list of references is then generated by<references />
. Some people also tend to insert<ref name="sourcename" />
tags with a unique name for each reference in the article in the text, and insert actual references<ref name="sourcename">source text</ref>
inside<references></references>
tags pair (it works identically to the most used approach, and I would argue it also works better because if you use wikicode editor like me, it can get quite chaotic with all the references breaking up the text flow, which this approach solves). Images are just for decoration, to fill up some missing space, but they're not as important as source links in references (and by link I mean referencing a source of the claim - could be a book source, without an online link, but it gives you an idea where to find the source in libraries, especially with ISBN specified). what if i had a picture for my pet but i had acopy right written under the picture can i upload it ? and should it be with the raw file attach or what ? Ghada Medhat (talk) 05:39, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- That depends on if you own the rights for the picture (eighter you are the photographer, which often the photographer by default owns rights, unless you transfer your rights to someone else, or the photographer transferred their rights to you). As rights owner you have the power to release the picture under a free license (see COM:L for details), so yes, you may be able to upload the picture under the specified license. But in order to do so, you would eighter update the page where the copyright is located so it includes the free license, or you would have to go through the process explained in COM:VRT. You don't say what country, but assuming the picture was taken in the last 30 years or so, there are almost no countries in the world where writing the word "copyright" on the photo matters. The picture is copyrighted on creation by its photographer, and copyright belongs to the photographer unless it is explicitly transferred (in most countries this can only be done in writing). Only the owner of the copyright can grant a license.
- The only simple cases for uploading a photo to Commons are:
- The photo is in the public domain (clearly not applicable here)
- You took the photo and have never published it.
- The photo is already published elsewhere with a free license acceptable to Commons.
- Otherwise, the copyright-holder needs to go through COM:VRT. For example, here, if someone else took the photo and transferred the rights to you, we'd need you to go through the VRT process to show the document that grants you copyright.
- On top of that: typically Commons isn't that interested in pictures of people's pets unless either there is something unusual about the animal or it is a notably good photo.
- Commons cannot handle RAW files. Photos should usually be uploaded as JPEGs. - Jmabel ! talk 15:15, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

How to add new version of an original file?
How to add a new version of an original file? I added but it did not edited the file. Instead it created a new file page. How to add a new version like other people do? (The original file doesn't belong to me but people edit it how?)ZavierPalz (talk) 11:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- In the original file page, scroll down past the file history. You'll see a link labeled "Upload a new version of this file". Click it and you'll be able to upload the file. Please keep in mind that this is only used for minor edits and fixes, broader changes count as derivative work instead and you would need to upload it as a new file instead. Can I upload a screenshot?
Hi, I'd like to upload this screenshot from here for a draft I'm working on at English Wikipedia. I'm not really familiar with policy, especially for screenshots, at Commons, so I was wondering if I am able to upload this here or at English Wikipedia. JML1148 (talk) 09:10, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- That screenshot is likely copyrighted, given it's on an Australian large news media page (which now seems unavailable, and it lacks a snapshot on Wayback Machine as it seems). You may be able to upload it on English Wikipedia under the Fair Use policy, but you should provide a detailed "Non-free Use Rationale" for this picture's intended usage. The rationale may or may not be accepted. If it is not accepted, then the image will be prompted for speedy deletion, until a valid rationale is provided and accepted within 7 days from speedy deletion mark. Copyright
Hello, I've just uploaded this file [3]. I think it's PD because the book it was taken from was published in Paris in 1935 [4], the author of the photo died in 1950 [5], and the French National Library released the book and photo with this "Open License" [6][7]. Am I right? Thank you for you help, Gitz6666 (talk) 01:21, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
- By the way, I've just received this notification/warning [8]. So this licence is not accepted [9]? The author of the photo died more than 70 years ago and the image was first released in 1935. Gitz6666 (talk) 02:21, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Gitz6666: The warning message merely reminds you that you forgot to use a recognized template to indicate a license. The template for License ouverte is Licence Ouverte (or Licence Ouverte 2 for version 2). However, I think you may be mistaken in your estimation that the book would be under that license. For two reasons. Firstly, the page Conditions de réutilisations des données de la BnF only says that the BnF offers its descriptive notices (biographic notices, authority notices) under that license, not the books or other items in its collection. Secondly, even if the BNF offered a license on items, it can only offer a license on items on which it holds the copyright, and nothing indicates that it ever held a copyright on this book. You are correct to say that the works of Mathieu Pieters (1877-1950) are in the public domain in Europe per the 70 years rule. A template for that is PD-old. (For the internal policy of Commons, it's not so much the place of publication of the French version of the book that matters but the place of first publication of the photo, which was not necessarily first published in this version of the book but possibly in the Netherlands, but that doesn't affect the conclusion of public domain in Europe. However, the photo may not be in the public domain in the United States (see URAA artist/doc)). Please note that some of your other uploads are also missing a license/status template, even if there was no automated message about them. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:13, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias, yes, I understand. Thank you for the explanation. Gitz6666 (talk) 14:38, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

Unable to find license for wartime photos
I'm trying to find some photos of the corvette HMS Hollyhock to add to the page for it, since I've became quite invested in making the page as informing as possible. I've found quite a few photos of her, but most of them were taken when she was sailed during the second world war, and I am unable to tell if they would be suitable for upload. The two photos that I would like to upload can be found on a memorial website for the ship (hmshollyhock.com) but I can't find anything with respects to the license of the photos. My understanding is that the photos are old enough that they're available for use, but I decided it would be better to ask about it.
Thanks in advance!

Uploading/transferring a video from archive.org to wikicommons
Hi, I tried a few times to upload the following historical (1925) video by Tullio Locchi (author who died in 1926 and therefore largely out of copyright) on the commons
https://archive.org/details/piombino-inaugura-lacqua-potabile-alla-presenza-di-s.-m.-il-re
via the direct archive org transfer mechanism of the video Everything would seem to fall within the requirements
- archive.org is in the allow list https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Copyupload-allowed-domains ,
- the format is allowed (webm)
- file size is <4gb
but after a while the process fails. saying:

Error: 503, Backend fetch failed at Sat, 13 May 2023 12:30:32 GMT
I've tried several times on different days, with different accounts and from different machines, but always with the same result and I'm out of ideas. Trying to compress the video below 100mb and uploading it directly doesn't seem sensible to me, you would lose the quality of the video which is extraordinarily good (the video has been recently restored).

- The webm file at archive org is 693MB. Most Upload tools for commons will fail with files larger than 600MB or 1.2GB (The HTTP500 response you get is typical for that). You can however download the video and than upload with either Rillke's bigchunkedupload script or with the free version of Offroader. - This is Commons. Non-free images are not allowed at Commons. English Wikipedia (is it english Wikipedia, or Wikinews, Wiktionary, or another english wiki?) has a fair use policy. You will find the english wikipeida fair use policy at the english wikipedia, but not at commons. If you need help to understand the english wikipedia fair use policy you should ask at the english wikipedia. The community at the english wikipedia may be able to help you with the english wikipedia fair use policy, but it is unlikely that the community at commons will be able to do that. Navbox at top of category for moving between magazine volumes
I've been unable to find an example or the code to put a navbox at the top of a category of a certain volume of a magazine to be able to move to the next volume of that magazine. I'm probably not using the right search terms, it's been kicking my **s so I've come here for help. This is one of the categories I'm talking about https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Thomas_Butler_Gunn_Diaries,_Volume_6 I want to be able to move to either volume 5 or volume 7 from this page without having to go back to the parent category. I've used the decades navbox from this page before (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Frank_Leslie%27s_Illustrated_Newspaper,_1864) but I don't know how to change it to work for volumes not decades. - There is no universal template but you can create something like Template:Century_Magazine_navbox. Ruslik (talk) 20:03, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Angryblackgirlimdbposter.jpg
To Whom It May Concern;
I'm a relatively-new user of the main Wikipedia site, and I was trying to upload an image to use for a page draft, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (which I'm still waiting to get published). I found the poster on the IMDb page for the film while looking for any extra updates. I don't know who created the poster, so that's what I put in the description page for the image.
I want it clear that I was not attempting to violate copyright restrictions in any way. I was asked to put this page together by the company producing the film, and when I found the poster online, I thought it would be right to add it to the draft. I have attached the link to the IMDb page in this letter as well -- if you have any questions or advice you can give me, I'd be open to hearing it.

- Copyright belongs to whomever created it, and fair use is not allowed on Commons. Additionally, English Wikipedia requires that you disclose w:WP:COI when you are being paid to edit articles. (edit: I see that you've already disclosed that on Wikipedia, good) Abzeronow (talk) 19:42, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- I was about to mention -- every time I make an edit on the draft, regardless of it being minor or major, I add that I'm a paid vendor.
- I want to add that I migrated over here from the FANDOM Wiki sites, so I wasn't as familiar with Wikipedia's policies regarding images. I filled out what I could, but since I can't figure out who created the image, I would like some advice on how to delete it. I've been reading other help pages, but I haven't been able to discern what to do. (Spoiler: I'm dumb.) Doodleferp (talk) 20:01, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- You need to ask your contact with the company who owns the right to the poster and then contact said person for permission Trade (talk) 20:12, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Doodleferp: more to the point on that last, the poster can only be added to Commons if they are willing to give a free license for it. If they are, then there are two ways they can convey that:
- On a site obviously under control of the copyright-holder, they can offer that license. For example, if the people who have made the film have obtained all rights to the poster and there is a web site for the film, the license for the poster could be indicated there. Then you (or anyone) can site that on the relevant file page.
- Someone who is authorized to represent the copyright-holder can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to confirm the license. Either they can reference an online copy of the poster or use an email attachment to be clear on what work they are granting a license.
- Alternatively, this can be done entirely within the English-language Wikipedia, on a fair use basis. See en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and especially en:Template:Non-free film poster. - Jmabel ! talk 21:19, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) Doodleferp: If permission is not forthcoming from the copyright holder, the English wikipedia does allow strict and limited use of copyright images such as film posters or portraits of dead people, following review so long as their use complies with ALL 10 non-free content criteria. This is only allowed after the article has been moved into mainspace and not permitted in draft articles or user pages. Copyright is a complex topic the enwiki has a specific copyright questions page which is useful for media files being used there. Ww2censor (talk) 21:30, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a bunch, everyone! I'll do my best to make sure I know all the right rules and procedures from now on!
- Like I said in the OG comment I'm still really new to all the Wikipedia red tape and I've super paranoid about accidentally stepping over a line. This really freaked me out and I'm glad so many people were willing to give me great advice! Sorry for the inconvenience and have a great day! Doodleferp (talk) 18:37, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Replace recently uploaded image with new image
I recently uploaded an image, but didn't notice some unsightly border artifacts. I have the exact same image, but without the artifacts that I'd like to replace the original image with. I tried clicking the "Upload new image" button but I don't want to change any of the meta data including image title etc. I want the new image to be be picked up automatically in the article that uses it. Uploading pronunciation audio files
Hi!
I have a zip file (938 megabytes), which includes 11 502 separate audio files of the pronunciation of Estonian words. The files are protected under CC BY 4.0, the author is Eesti Keele Instituut (Institute of Estonian Language) and they have been recorded between the years 2010 and 2013. Up until now, I have manually uploaded some of these files just as I go along, totalling now to about 70. However, I think it might be worth it to upload all of the pronunciation audio files to Commons. Surely there's a better way to do that than manually uploading 11k files? Also, the file names are "psv_00001.wav" ... "psv_11502.wav", but they should be renamed to "Et-<<word>>.ogg" when uploaded. Also vol.2, the 70 or so files uploaded now are in the .ogg format, although the originals are .wav. I've been converting them because I thought all audio files should be in .ogg. Is it also possible to convert all of these? This entire thing sounds like a lot of work and I, as a not really bot-competent person, am looking for ways to make this process as easy as possible. I want to replace File:Tierced per chevron reversed demo.png, which I uploaded recently, with a copy that has the "shine" the other files in that set have long had and fixes the placement of the chevron, moving it up slightly, but I'm not seeing any button on that page to "overwrite" or "edit" the file itself (the "edit" links are all just for editing the wikitext, and "upload file" goes to the general upload form). -sche (talk) 09:06, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Cover art for a 1926 novel that is in the public domain on Public Gutenberg Australia
This book by Edgar Wallace is in the public domain on Public Gutenberg Australia. Would this cover for that edition (not the film image used with the Project Gutenberg text) be considered in the public domain as well, or alternatively usable under fair use?
https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0200981h.html
1926 Cover to the book (not the dust cover) is shown on this version https://www.biblio.com/book/door-seven-locks-wallace-edgar/d/1449707671
How do I upload this so I can add it to my draft of the article on the Door with Seven Locks? Ariadne000 (talk) 19:33, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Ariadne000: That 1926 cover is presumably {{PD-ineligible}}.
- "Under fair use" always is a question of in what context?
- You can upload (and then transclude into the article) exactly like any other image. Our recommended upload tool for beginners is Commons:UploadWizard. - Jmabel ! talk 23:55, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Release rights for SVG variants of pre-existing Commons files that were released in PD, but not CC0
I'm trying to upload an SVG version of File:The graph y = √x(s).png via the File Upload Wizard, but I can't figure out how to properly fill in the release rights section. I can't tell for certain if I should state it to not be my own work, and - if I do - how to complete the "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work" section — "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative commons license" > CC0 doesn't seem to make sense because the original wasn't released in specifically CC0, and I can't find a specific template for indicating it was adapted from something already on Commons. What do I do? Lemondoge (talk) 02:04, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- As I can see the file was actually released in PD. Anyway for any practical purposes CC0=PD. Ruslik (talk) 14:16, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Just do what you need to get through the Wizard, then go back and hand-edit to describe the specific situation correctly. Or skip the Wizard, use Special:Upload and get it right in the first place. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- If you choose "not own work" there is the option "leave empty for now, add the right templates after saving" (or something along those lines). –LPfi (talk) 20:29, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Apollo 10 Lunar Module image from Featured Article is not the image the description claims. What should be done?
Three days ago the featured article on English Wikipedia was Apollo 10, and the image on the main page was File:Apollo_10_Lunar_Module.jpg, and the summary claims the image ID is AS10-34-5112. However, the original image uploaded on 30 June 2007 is AS10-34-5112, the current image uploaded on 10 May 2008 is AS10-34-5109. This image is used on a lot of pages. Should it be reverted to the proper AS10-34-5112 and a new image globally replace its use with a properly uploaded AS10-34-5109? Or should it remain the way it is and the description updated? - Caddyshack01 (talk) 14:35, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Caddyshack01: The original image should not have been overwritten with a different image. Fixes can be: 1) Revert File:Apollo_10_Lunar_Module.jpg to the original image, 2) If you judge the 2008 image useful, reupload it as a separate file with a correct description, 3) Decide which file you prefer to use in the Wikipedia article, or you could use the uncropped version of AS10-34-5112. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:38, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Nominate for deletion or not?
I found a bunch of pdf books with copyright dates that make them not in the public domain as far as I understand. It looks like the metdata from the source mistakenly took the publishing house established date (1834) as the copyright instead of the correct date from the versa pages. The dates seem to be in the 1950s-1970s. I nominated a few for deletion thinking that was the correct thing to do. My search brought up dozens of these mis-dated pdfs and I don't want to nominate dozens of files for deletion if it's not really a concern or something I shouldn't be concerning myself with. St. Andrews Drive (talk) 19:59, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- @St. Andrews Drive: It sounds like the typical problem of misdating by the Internet Archive in mass uploads by Fae. Yes, deletion is the correct thing after you checked that no public domain reason can apply. You can probably nominate for speedy deletion when obvious copyvio. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:56, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

My name is JP Den Tex, I'm a Dutch singer/songwriter with English language songs. I've already made a sandbox draft proposal of a succinct english summary and would like to go public with it in the short term. I've also uploaded a recent picture by Dutch photographer Koos Breukel. How to proceed from here is unclear to me, I'm a bit in the dark righ now. Could someone please help me out? Jp den tex (talk) 14:22, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Jp den tex: I assume the "sandbox draft" is en:User talk:Jp den tex/sandbox. We can't really say or do much here on Commons about something on en-wiki, but do make sure you have read and conformed to COI|their policy on conflicts of interest or you are very likely to have your account blocked there.
- As for File:Photo JP Den Tex (Wiki).jpg, who owns the copyright? By default it would be the photographer. If he has formally signed it over to you, we need you to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide the document that transfers the copyright to you. If not, we need him to go through the process outlined at [[COM:VRT] to grant the claimed license. Otherwise, this is going to end up being deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

- @ Vad Anita: who took the photo? If it was not a "selfie": did they formally sign copyright over to you? Has it been published elsewhere? All of these things will affect what we need to do to get it appropriately on Commons. Also, if you uploaded a photo, you must have an account. Things are a lot clearer if you log in to make edits like this one here on the talk page. It makes it possible to "ping" you. - Jmabel ! talk 03:45, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Vad Anita: The file File:Anita Vad.jpg is not deleted yet. For now, it only has a problem tag, added by an administrator of Hungarian Wikipedia, User:Regasterios, asking for evidence of some sort of pemission. So, what do you mean by "it was my own personal photo"? Do you mean that you took this photo yourself as a self-portrait? If not, the copyright owner will have to confirm the free license (see Commons:VRT). Also, it may seem a little strange that the photo is taken in front of a poster for a 2022 event if it was taken on 22 May 2023 . -- Asclepias (talk) 14:30, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Personal sandbox in Wikimedia Commons

- Yes, you can create subpages in your userspace. Creating your main user page User:Whistian is optional, but it might be a good start. A user subpage begins with the name of the main user page, followed by a slash, followed by the specific name you want to give to your subpage. It would look like, for example, User:Whistian/Sandbox, where you can replace Sandbox with whatever you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:21, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Whistian Whistian (talk) 08:42, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- You cannot. The concept of a sandbox makes sense in Wikipedia. There you can start writing an article and it will not be indexed by search engines and other users can see, that it is not an article in Wikipedia, but only some scribbling in your sandbox, that may or may not become part of Wikipedia. Commons however (while useing the MediaWiki Software) is a media database. Each and every media file that is uploaded to Commons is public at once and gets indexed by search engines. It has to be in scope and has to be freely licensed - otherwise it will be deleted. When you upload a file you give it to the public and you are not entitled to withdraw it. (There is however the possibility of a courtesy deletion. Within seven days you can ask for a deletion and if the file is not used, this will be granted as a courtesy). Use visual editor with commons:sandbox
I want to experiment with WMC using the Sandbox for uploading files etc, but the only editor available is the text editor: visual editor is grayed-out. How can I use the visual editor with Commons:Sandbox. Thanks, Whistian Whistian (talk) 09:36, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- VisualEditor is still a text editor, only with the difference that what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG editor). Meaning all of the formatting and visuals on the page are represented "as is", unlike the wikitext editor, which represents formatting and visuals on the page in the form of an editable wikitext syntax. There is no sandbox for uploading files to the wiki. Files once uploaded become public, and experiments are usually marked for speedy deletion as they're often out of scope. If you want to test out uploading a file to a wiki, you can create one on your localhost machine, if you download the MediaWiki software, or you can create a wiki on one of the wiki farms that are running MediaWiki software (like Miraheze or Fandom). I strongly suggest you to create a localhost wiki on your machine for testing purposes. Polda18 D C 11:46, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
File uploader (for a group of files)
I used to use Vicuna Uploader to upload a group of files. I have a new Windows 11 computer. I downloaded its Zip file and extracted the files. When I click on vivuna.bat, Windows doesn't want to run it. If I tell it to run it anyway, it shows a window for a fraction of a second and then it disappears.
I decided to try PrettyPat. I downloaded its jar file, but I can't get it to do anything.
Can someone help me get a program to upload a group of files to Commons on my computer? Bubba73 (talk) 05:11, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- A jar-File is a Java-Application and will only run if a Java-JRE is installed on the Computer. You can download and install the JRE from Oracle or from OpenJDK. Vicuna is also a Java application. The UploadWizard can upload up to 150 or 500 files in a single batch. At Windows 11 you can have a virtual Android device in Windows and use the Offroader-App in the virtual Android. Source info when overwriting file that is my own work?
I'm trying to upload a new version of an existing file in the Commons that is my "own work" and is labelled as such in the Summary for it. The "Describing your uploads" section at the top of the upload page includes the following: "Source: The URL where you found the file, or write 'own work' if it is your own creation." But, when I write "own work" in the "Source URL" field of the "Source file" section and try to upload the file, the Commons refuses it with the warning "Invalid URL: own work." What am I missing here? Johnlumea (talk) 16:34, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Do you try to upload a file, or are you using the "upload a new file version" link from an existing file? Reuploading ignores source/info fields, it should not be possible to fail because of that. Which upload tool do you use? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- I'm using the "Upload a new version of this file" link on this page. Johnlumea (talk) 22:28, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ok. There are radio buttons. You either upload from your local file - or from a file on the web. "source" on this form does not mean the same as "source" in the file description. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 22:58, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's not clear that the radio buttons are presenting an either/or choice. Leaving the "Source URL" field blank enabled me to upload the file. Johnlumea (talk) 16:36, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Johnlumea: Hi, and welcome. In computerized user interfaces, round radio buttons are exclusive - you may only use one, like the buttons on analog car radios for tuning to one radio station. Square checkboxes are different, you may use more than one, like checkboxes for a to-do list or grocery list on paper. Copyright on images planned to add onto an article
Hello, I am planning to add a company logo image onto an article. I can't find any images of this specific logo on Wikimedia Commons so I found the logo I was looking for on the company's website. How can I check this logo is suitable for addition onto articles without infringing on any copyright laws?
Thank you RossDG8 (talk) 20:56, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- RossDG8: Depending on the actual design and country of origin, the logo might not even be copyrightable. Otherwise one must obtain the image from the company under a free licence we accept, however, if that is not forthcoming, on the enwiki one may be able to add a copyrightable logo under their strict non-free media criteria for such images. Please provide the website of the logo so we can advise you further. Ww2censor (talk) 21:45, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

- @RossDG8: That logo should be {{PD-textlogo}} in pretty much any country. - Jmabel ! talk 01:31, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- Which means you could upload it here and then use it in the article. What is our practice on attributing the author of logos? I assume logos are mostly {{Anonymous}}, but not always, so that template should not be used without checking. {{Own}} is obviously wrong. Often the company is put there, but a company cannot be an author. Leaving the field blank causes a warning on the file description page. –LPfi (talk) 06:50, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

AfD
I have spent most of the day trying to make a simple nomination for deletion. I listed the notice on the article. Every time I try to list the article in the log for AfD, I get new objections. In fact, the general outline is unclear of what goes where, how subpages are made, etc. At this point all I want to do is withdraw the nomination. Do I just delete the edit ot the Article page? (I did made one nomination several years ago. It was very easy. The discussion was quite civilized and the article was deleted. This time it seems there are numberous other hoops to jump through. I guess this is the result of the increasing bureaucratization of Wikipedia.) AnthroMimus (talk) 02:18, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- @AnthroMimus: this is a bit confusing. This is Wikimedia Commons, and in general we don't have articles. What exactly are you intending to nominate for deletion/discussion? Is it even on this site? - Jmabel ! talk 03:32, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- @AnthroMimus: Hi, and welcome. Your AfD had two problems. On the article itself, you sent it to AfD while there was an active PROD in this edit; Sammi Brie corrected that in this other edit. The second problem is that you misspelled "Mamiya" as "Mayima" and used "{{subst:AFD|subpage}}" in this third edit creating the misspelled subpage en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ron Mayima (you should have used "{{subst:afd2|pg=Ron Mamiya|cat=|text=}} ~~~~" with the text filled in); I compensated for that in these edits. Please read en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion thoroughly, and en:WP:BEFORE before trying an AfD again. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:27, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
Newspaper clipping from unknown paper in c1934
I have an old newspaper clipping with a photo of Ponzi being released from Prison and a headline that shows he is being rearrested on a warrant for deportation. I don't know which paper it is from, so trying to determine if permission is needed to post a photo of this clipping from 1934 (believed to be a Boston area paper). Arrow mismatch between SVG and PNGs
I recently uploaded File:Polttoainehankinta_Threat_Scenario_C.svg, and there appears to be a significant mismatch between how the arrow heads are rendered in the SVG original versus the mediawiki generated PNGs. can I upload a newspaper article's image which I need as a reference in my wikipedia post's reference
I need a link for the newspaper article published in the year 2015, as I couldn't find that in the archives or online e-paper, I need to upload the image or pdf of the article somewhere to generate a link for the same to use it in the wikipedia's post reference. Can I do that by uploading it in wikimedia commons? if I cite the paper, date, headline properly to avoid any copyright issue? Siwaniagrawal340 (talk) 06:32, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Short answer: no. Citing the paper, date and headline properly isn't enough to avoid copyright issue. Commons doesn't allow Fair Use material like English Wikipedia does. The image is most likely copyright protected and you can only link to the article. Anyone can follow references and check them themselves, which includes displaying additional images right in the source. Uploading that image to Commons would be copyright infringement. If you absolutely need to use the image in the Wikipedia article, then you may have to upload it to Wikipedia directly, under a Non-free rationale policy. Not all images would be accepted however. Especially photographs may be subject of rejection, because photographs are usually something people can take themselves. Especially illustration imagery (photographs added for illustration purposes, not depicting the real thing). You may also ask on English Wikipedia's help desk for further informations. Polda18 D C 09:18, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Not all Wikipedias allow fair use, and e.g. Wikipedia in English require the image to be used in the article, which I assume isn't welcome in this case. You might want to add a relevant word-by-word quote (if there are specific sentences that contain the facts you cite) to the reference template, which together with the other information should be enough for cursory checks. You might want to keep a copy of the paper (or a scan) to be able to give more details if requested at some point; sadly, old papers are often awkward to lay hands on (they are kept in some archives and libraries, but you may need to travel to access them). –LPfi (talk) 09:53, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- I wouldn't call a 2015 newspaper "old", and electronic version certainly exists somewhere (even if it is behind a paywall). But yeah, not all Wikipedias allow Fair Use. I was specifically talking about English Wikipedia (though there are multiple Wikipedias that do allow Fair Use as well). I actually come from Wikipedia that doesn't allow Fair Use, Czech Wikipedia, so I know there are those wikis. I must say that I'm fairly jealous of English Wikipedia, as they can to some extent use copyright protected material under non-free media use rationale, of course justified with reasons why a free medium cannot exist. A lot of those images are music cover arts, logos and typography that is unique enough to be protected by copyright. We can't have those, even if we wished. Polda18 D C 12:44, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- The problem is that common libraries (at least here) get rid of newspapers after a year or so. The newspapers themselves have archives, and you can get the paper or a scan from legal deposit libraries, but that is awkward if you don't live close – and for big languages you need to be lucky to do. If there are online copies, then fine, but the OP didn't find any. –LPfi (talk) 17:31, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- Well, yes. If there is no online source, then it's a bit problematic to verify the reference, especially if you're not local. But I would argue that many of the newspapers are at least available in various deposits throughout US, so you don't really have to travel far. The only problem is when you're not a US resident and want to verify a US newspaper. I don't believe you can find one in Canada or even Europe. That would be my case. Honestly, if you fail to find the source online, it doesn't necessarily mean it's not online. Chances are there might be an online source, but it may be poorly indexed (either not indexed at all, or found somewhere at 20th page of Google search results, which most people don't really even look for). The issue is most people don't really have much time to scout for sources online when it comes to verification, and physical scout for sources verification is time consuming as well, so most people just take the informations for granted. Which is why fabulation articles sometimes slip under the radar. This is also problem when creating articles entirely from scratch, because if you can't find sources online, you have to get physical access, which does take a lot of time. That's why I only translate already created articles from English to Czech. License does actually make it possible, so it's not like I would violate copyright by doing it. I always state that the article is a translation. There is a link to the exact revision I took informations from (which I always fill in afterwards, because I want it to be as recent as possible, so when I have it finished and it waits for a quality check - which I perform myself frankly - I check if there are some new informations or some new changes, and update the article draft, and check the quality of it again, then if everything is okay, I release the article to the wild). But I do want to make some of my own articles as well, from scratch. Right now I don't really have much time for it though. Polda18 D C 16:09, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- I suppose US newspapers are reasonably easy, as there are a lot of US people able to check some deposit. For a smaller country, especially if it doesn't have a developed deposit system available to the public, there might be nobody around to get to the copy. –LPfi (talk) 21:10, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- One of the best ways to make the papers available to all worldwide would be to simply upload it to Internet Archive. It should be however stated that if someone does it, it's on their own risk if the material uploaded is still under copyright protection. Internet Archive has a large library of digitized books which you can lend online. It works just like in a real library, where there is a physical copy of the book, and one person can lend it at the same time. Sometimes there are multiple copies, so more people can lend the same book. Digital lending is supposed to work like that as well. When world was on lockdown during Covid pandemic, Internet Archive lifted restrictions for lending, which ultimately led to publishers sueing Internet Archive. That would be bad if they succeeded as this would set up precedense and could hurt digital lending altogether. Internet Archive wouldn't be the only one who would be in danger. Newspapers could be sent to Internet Archive to digitize as well, and have it being available for a digital lend would be amazing. Polda18 D C 06:06, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

- @Dotmantek: It would be very useful to know what image and what article. You seem to have uploaded two (nearly identical) images, both claimed as own work (which frankly seems unlikely for images like this). Are you claiming to have taken the photograph(s)? If so, and presuming they are from a digital camera, would you please upload the unaltered photographs, full resolution as they came from the camera? If not, then the claim of "own work" is false, and you cannot offer a license to use someone else's work!

Uploading historical state emblems
So I wanted to ask about the uploading of historical state emblems that may have been modified and no longer in use and even not available on the government websites. So can we take it from other websites who are using those emblems not as their work of art but just a random picture or even displaying it and giving some information about it? And it's not a particular photograph of a emblem or an particular artwork of an emblem but it was the image what was used as representation of the government at that time. This just shows that it was in public domain all along. So can we upload that ? And I think there should be an exception to the different emblems over different times because it's part of public discourse already.DrEditor00 (talk) 21:17, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- If you can provide a reason why it is in the public domain, sure. By "state", do you mean "U.S. state" or something else? Any image from the U.S. used publicly in 1927 or earlier is now public domain; if it was first introduced later than that, it's going to come down to individual cases. - Jmabel ! talk 01:28, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

- @Mikecobern: I'd say that image is really dubious and shouldn't be on Commons. A user with no other contributions claimed that this 1952 photo was their own work and offered a free license to use it. I'd say it just slipped through the cracks. So I would recommend against reusing it unless you can sort out the actual authorship and license it from the rightful owner (or work out a reason it may have become public-domain). - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- That info was probably false, but the photo may still be in the public domain. See the discussion at the deletion request page linked from the file description page. This may take some time to sort out. –LPfi (talk) 21:55, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Mikecobern: Wikimedia Commons isn't a commercial image licensing agency like Getty. Wikimedia Commons just hosts content uploaded by users and doesn't claim any copyright ownership or other responsibility over it. You can find out some more details on reusing content hosted by Commons at COM:REUSE, but it's the responsibiity of reusers of such content to verify they can do so and that content has really been licensed as such. The Commons Community does try to make sure the content Commons hosts is in accordance with relevant Commons policies and guidelines, but there's no vetting of content that takes place prior to upload. Uploaders are, at least at first, given the benefit of doubt, but many mistakes are made and content is constantly being deleted. If you're planning on reusing any images uploaded to Commons, you should exercise due diligence before doing so. If your publisher has an intellectual property department, you should ask them to check on the images you want to use since ultimate responsibility resides with you and your publisher. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:12, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

- @VSL: File:Ukrainian National Anthem played by U.S. Navy Band.mp3 is a perfectly good filename. Don't tell me to change it, thank you. If you are asking someone else to do you the favor of doing uploads on your behalf, please don't try to dictate to them how they do it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:50, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- @VSL: https://russian-records.com/download.php?action=audio&image_id=66920 just gives me "Hotlinking is not allowed". (Besides inability to access the audio, that also means it is useless as a source link.) If I am to access that in order to download the audio, you'll have to give me the page from which you reach it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- As they talk about hotlinking, I assume any link one finds doesn't work when one shares it. You probably have to go via some search or index page, where they give you a cookie. –LPfi (talk) 19:42, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

- Both Special:UploadWizard and Special:Upload for this and other MP3 files give me the following messages:
- Commons automatically rejects many MP3s, so exceptions should be made for some files. That’s why I started this topic. VSL (talk) 20:33, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @VSL: I have no idea what you are asking me to "make an exception" to. If the rights conform to COM:L they can be uploaded, if not, not. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @VSL: then feel very free to upload it with {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}} for the performance and {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1870}} for the composition. - Jmabel ! talk 18:42, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Definitely, the composer died in 1870. VSL (talk) 18:23, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
MP3 upload
Anyone autopatrolled, please upload this file with the exact name “Хор табору полонених українців у Вецларі з оркестром Музичного товариства ім. М. Лисенка — Ще не вмерла Україна.mp3” and license templates {{PD-EU-audio}}{{PD-US-record-expired}}
. VSL (talk) 19:15, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
@Illegitimate Barrister: Also, if this is possible, rename National anthem of Ukraine, instrumental.oga to “United States Navy Band — Anthem of Ukraine.mp3” (or just change the extension to mp3) and upload [16] as a new version of this file with the description “the original audio instead of lossy re-encodings”. Fixing discrepant coords
At File:Stop the Killing in Gaza. (41745432595).jpg I have made several efforts to correct the SDC coords (which incorrectly give East latitude rather than West). Everything seems "normal" but then my changes never seem to stick. Does anyone either understand what is going on here or know how to make it work correctly? The coords given in the Wikitext appear to be correct. - Jmabel ! talk 20:48, 29 May 2023 (UTC) Similarly for File:Arrest Ehud Barak - "Butcher of Gaza" (41528150625).jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Still no answer to this. Does anyone have any idea? - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
Breach of license terms and abuse
Hello, my friend Lmmima generously gave this image to Commons with a CC Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. A buzz website called Screen Mix has used the image—which is of couscous in Casablanca, Morocco—without attribution and has labeled it as Algerian, causing nationalist noise on social media. This user is now caught in the crossfire dealing with unwelcome attention and possibly harassment on her social media account from nationalists arguing about the image. What recourse is there for these kinds of situations? إيان (talk) 03:51, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Dyolf77, might you have any recommendations? إيان (talk) 03:53, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi إيان. It's unfortunate that such a thing is happening to your friend, but there's not really much that Commons can do to help out. If the issue was related to the way the file was being used on Commons or on some other Wikimedia Foundation project, then perhaps something could be down. However, as explained in COM:ENFORCE, it's up to copyright holders to enforce the terms of the licenses they release their work under. Even if the file were to be deleted from Commons, there would be no way to stop someone who's already downloaded it from continuing to use. Your friend might need need to contact a lawyer familiar with intellectual property rights in the jurisdiction where they live to see what their options are. It's possible that they could try a en:DMCA takedown notice, but I've got no idea how such a thing would play out in the jurisdications where your friend lives and where the reuser of the photo lives. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:08, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @إيان, thanks for pointing this to me, and I feel so sorry about @Lmmima. As a starting point, can we adjust the descriptions of the File? Also, the title of the file is too vague, it is possible to rename it to a more specific/precise name?
- Also, I agree with @Jmabel, you have (and @Lmmima) to contact Facebook and report a copyright issue. Best! -- — D Y O L F 77[Talk] 18:20, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Renaming the file won't necessarily make the problem being described above go away. If the current file is incorrect for some reason, it possibly could be renamed per COM:FNC, but that won't necessarily stop others from harassing the uploader over it or for improperly attributing it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:25, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

- @إيان you can send an email to legal@wikimedia.org and ask for advice. Maybe you can also send an email of the local chapter of WMF to ask for advice. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 06:32, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- You could consider sending a DMCA notice to Facebook. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 06:34, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think WMF Legal will provide any advice to individual users about copyright enforcement. - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- I kind of agree with Jmabel here. The WMF is unlikey going to give any specific legal advice to any users for real world problems they might be having per COM:DISCLAIMER. At best they might just say something general like "contact local authorities" or something similar, but that's about it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:25, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
I've conveyed this information to Lmmima. Thanks to all who have offered input here. إيان (talk) 02:22, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Download picture as jpg
Hello!
I wonder if it is possible to download pictures from your website as jpg? If possible: how do I do?
Best regards, Matilda Matildagr (talk) 08:22, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Matildagr: If they are JPEGs then they will download as JPEGs, but of course you can't (for example) download a PDF as a JPEG, you need to convert it on your end. If you are on a PC:
- On the file page, left-click the photo to get full resolution.
- Right-click and select "Save Image as..."
- Save to your file system as you wish.
- Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Does that work? It requires there to be a converter for the file types in question connected to the download menu. Are all required converters installed in Windows by default? How is the program supposed to save a multi-page PDF as JPEG? (And what if you download with a mobile phone?)
- MediaWiki (the server software) does use thumbnails of another type than the original file in some cases (e.g. thumbnails of SVGs aren't SVGs and thumbnails of PDFs aren't PDFs). The filename extension may still be the one from the original file (which probably confuses Windows, but if the same program handles both file types, that might not matter).
- –LPfi (talk) 19:46, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @LPfi: as I said, only a JPEG will download as a JPEG. You need to do any conversion on your own machine. - Jmabel ! talk 20:20, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- E.g. the URL of the thumbnail at Commons:File types#Scanned text documents (DjVu, PDF) is "https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6c/Amsterdam_Museum_logo.pdf/page1-140px-Amsterdam_Museum_logo.pdf.jpg", which I take to mean that the thumbnail is a JPEG although the source is a PDF. Such a small thumbnail is of course useless if you want to download a PDF, but https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6c/Amsterdam_Museum_logo.pdf/page1-1239px-Amsterdam_Museum_logo.pdf.jpg should work OK. For a multi-page PDF you probably need to download thumbnails of different pages individually (note the code "page1-1239px in the URL). For the original URL, see the resolution options at the file description page. (SVGs seem to be thumbnailed as PNGs). –LPfi (talk) 22:13, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- So, unless the image happens to be one whose thumbnails are JPEGs, you need to download the original and convert it yourself (which may be the best solution anyway). There may already be suitable programs on your computer. Otherwise e.g. ImageMagick is free, is available for many platforms and can transform many formats to JPEG (on the command line it is simple, unless you want to use advanced options:
convert file.png file.jpeg
, I haven't tried the GUI options). Most image editors and a range of other programs should also be able to do it. –LPfi (talk) 17:33, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

Image Licensing
Hello, I have a question regarding licensing. There is a historical image I would like to use for a Wikipedia article I have been editing so I looked into uploading it onto Wikimedia Commons, but I'm stuck at the licensing part. On the website where the image in question is hosted, it is stated to be under a CC BY-NC license. From what I gather, this means that I should be able to upload it to Wikimedia Commons to use it in an article. But when I try to upload it, the licensing section doesn't include CC BY-NC, only a bunch of other CC categories. So what am I supposed to do? Contact the website like it's mentioned in the instructions? Thank you and best regards, --Snichan4294 (talk) 09:50, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Snichan4294. Commons doesn't accept "BY-NC", "BY-ND" or "BY-NCND" types of CC licenses as explained in COM:LJ; so, you won't be able to upload the file under that license. Some local Wikipedias, like English Wikipedia, treat NC licenses as fair use content and do allow such content to be uploaded. However, many (like English Wikipedia) have pretty strict policies and guidelines related to using such content and place lots of restrictions on it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:11, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Snichan4294: The English Wikipedia may allow such an image, depending on what it is, but it must comply with all 10 criteria of the strict non-free media guidelines. If you can be more specific about the image you are considering we can advise you further. Ww2censor (talk) 14:14, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- This is the image: https://www.kamra.si/mm-elementi/zajetja-za-el-centralo-na-cegeljsah-copy-3/
- If there's anything you need translating, I'll be glad to help. It was uploaded by a museum to a digital database of cultural heritage. --Snichan4294 (talk) 19:05, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Snichan4294: If that photo was really taken and first published in 1925, then there's a really good chance it might have already entered into the public domain (i.e. is no longer eligible for copyright protection). Under US copyright law, photos first published in the US prior to January 1, 1928, are considered to be too old to be still eligible for copyright protection. Photos first published outside of the US prior to January 1, 1928, are also generally considered too old for copyright protection in the US, but Commons also requires that they be the same under the copyright laws of the country where the photo was first published. So, tt's possible that the website's claim of copyright ownership is no longer valid or never was valid, but that could depend on the copyright laws of the country where the image was first published. Many organizations try to claim that the diigitalization of a photo, even of a photo that is considered to be within the public domain, is sufficient to estabish a new copyright for their digitalized version, but this is a really contentious point and Commons doesn't seem to really recognize such claims. Are you able to find out from that website who took the photo, when it was taken/first published and where it was taken? If you can, then it's possible to check to see whether the original photo itself is now within the public domain. If it's within the public domain in both the US and its country of first publication, then it should be fine to upload to Commons. If it's within the public domain in the US but not in its country of origin, it can't really be uploaded to Commons, but it might be able to be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as en:PD-US-expired-abroad. If it's still considered to be under copyright protection in the US, it can only be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content as explained by Ww2censor. In that case, knowing in which article and how you want to use the image will make it easier to assess any possible non-free use. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:51, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- Taken (created) and published are different things. According to COM:Slovenia (I assume Slovenian law is the relevant one, based on the top domain in the URL), the copyright of photographic works published before 1970 are in the public domain. I am not sure that is correct: I have the impression that EU demands that works above the relevant threshold of originality are protected a longer time – although the photo may be below that threshold according to Slovenian law. In other European jurisdictions the term may be 70 years from the death of the author, if the author was identified at the time of publication or, in some jurisdictions, before the copyright term of an anonymous publication ended, or 70 years from creation or from publication. Also in Slovenia, the photo may not be free if published late –LPfi (talk) 09:30, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- It looks like some sort of Slovenian digital historical photobank library. I'm not sure when the photos were first published, but Google Image search or Tineye search could yield more informations. Tineye seems to fail find anything, Google Image search did yield some results, but none of them seem to be relevant (apart from one, which was found on the same website). You may also ask the library if they know some more relevant informations, like when the photo was first published, etc. Polda18 D C 06:53, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
- As it probably needs to have been published before (or at latest in?) 1970, that first publishing was hardly on the internet :-)
- Of course, the book, newspaper or whatever may have been republished on the internet, or the photo's publication mentioned somewhere. Here I assumed Slovenian copyright, but that the heritage database is Slovenian says little about what country should be seen as country of origin. More info is needed.
