Hi, how I proceed to keep a copyrighted image that I uploaded? What is the correct license that I'll put in an internet image, but that is possibly protected under copyright? Thanks in advance. --Evandro J.G.C. (talk) 18:05, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Why did you upload it in the first place if you don't own the copyright and didn't care for permission? --Magnus (talk) 18:31, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
That's a bit snide. But, Evandro, do read Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain. It's short. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Glass plate negatives

Hi

I recently purchased a collection of glass plate negatives at auction. The photos were taken between 1880 and 1898. Many of the photos are of very interesting subjects in the United States. (Examples - H.H. Holmes House, the White House, Harvard, the Alamo)

Are these photos outside of the copyright time period and can I upload them? Do I own the copyright now that I purchased the photos, or does that copyright still belong to the person who originally took them (i.e., their estate)

Thank you!

David — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timegarden (talk • contribs) 20:36, 01 January 2016 (UTC)

Ownership of the copyright is not related to ownership of the physical item. The person who took the photos still holds the copyright. But if they were published in the United States before 1923, the copyright has probably expired (see PD-1923). Commons:Hirtle chart is pretty helpful in these cases. BMacZero (talk) 21:54, 1 January 2016 (UTC)
Does it seem if they were likely published? You probably know more about the probability of that in that day and given what else you know about them then I do. If they were not published, and they're anonymous, then they have 120 years from creation, so anything from 1895 or earlier would be PD. If they're unpublished and not anonymous, they'd have a life+70 term.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:36, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

This is the article subjects new headshot and he has written permission to use the photo. I'm struggling to find how to update the license.

--Srenne1982 (talk) 03:29, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

  • "Written permission to use the photo" is not quite enough. We need a sufficiently free license (specifically, one that allows commercial use and derivatives). Also, the subject of a photo usually does not own the copyright, the photographer does. In most countries, the subject would only own the copyright if it was explicitly transferred in writing. In any case, see COM:OTRS for how to send in such permission; note that the copyright holder must specifically choose a license. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

Searching within commons

I am positive this question has been asked before but apparently I am incapable of wording it sufficiently to find it, and every tool I've found is beyond my limited understanding. Hoe can I search within a category? I want to search for a certain name within Category:University of Toronto Wenceslas Hollar Digital Collection. Tom Reedy (talk) 02:22, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

King David Hotel terrorist attack

I was present at the 1946 attack on the King David Hotel just a short distance away and I took many photographs of the incident. You are welcome to use these if you wish. They show many views of the damage also shots of the empty streets after the curfew was imposed. I was RAF attached to the Forces Broadcasting Unit as a studio conreoller. Thank You Robert — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rbradshaw3745 (talk • contribs) 18:46, 03 January 2016 (UTC)

Rbradshaw3745, we welcome such items. You can upload them using Commons:Upload. Be sure to describe them so that people know what they're looking at! -mattbuck (Talk) 18:49, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Also, in this case I'd strongly recommend sending email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as discussed in Commons:OTRS. Even if these have never been published before, 70-year-old brand new uploads are unusual enough that someone may incorrectly assume that you got them from someone else, so a clarifying letter would be a good idea. - Jmabel ! talk 02:00, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't understand why this text: «It is located in the sestiere of , near .», is rendered as «It is located in the sestiere of , near .» Carlotm (talk) 21:46, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Adding is done to place the page into that category. Adding |Venezia Santa Lucia railway station specifies that the sort string determining where the page appears in listings of the category. If you want to link to a category, you have to prefix the link with a colon: Venezia Santa Lucia railway station LX (talk, contribs) 23:08, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Wilfrid Israel Posters - Message from Motopark to ophirbaer

Hello, I received a message from Motopark regarding 3 entries I made, back in 2012. The pictures of the 3 posters I entered were apparently put on Commons:Speedy Deletion requests. Not being familiar with the software and the procedure, I tried to remove it from the Speedy Deletion category, but apparently, I only caused it to to the Deletion request department. This is what I see now for the Hebrew version poster.

"File:Wilfrid Poster - Hebrew - Updated.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry."

Bottom Line: I don't know how and where to place my objection for the deletion (Speedy or Regular). As suggested by Motopark, I added some categories. Those pictures should NOT be deleted. Thanks, Ophir Baer ophirbaer ophirb@amdocs.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ophirbaer (talk • contribs) 17:21, 05 January 2016 (UTC)

The explanation is on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Wilfrid Poster - Hebrew - Updated.JPG, an old deletion request. Unfortunately the files will be deleted as their author and authors of the photos have not released them under a free licence. Ruslik (talk) 17:31, 5 January 2016 (UTC)

Categories

I'm a bit lost here; definite newbie. I have just uploaded a first batch of photographs as a first test. I filled in the form as seemed appropriate, although I didn't understand what 'heading' meant in the location boxes. I filled in categories, some of which appeared in red, but before I finished I was told to complete categories for the photos. This puzzled me because I thought I already had. Then I got lost trying to figure out what was happening. Just as an observation, it might help to be able to narrow down categories with some sort of drop down thingy - I'm never very good at thinking what categories might be appropriate. So, I have uploaded some photos, categorised them (I think) and was then wondering if this batch constituted a gallery. Any (gentle) help or comments here would be most appreciated. Ta muchly. Dumbledore-of-Awen (talk) 15:04, 6 January 2016 (UTC) Partial answer:

  • Can someone answer his question about "heading"? I never use the Upload Wizard, and am unfamiliar with how it uses this term. Answered below by BMacZero.
  • If a category appears in red, then it is not one that exists under that name. Usually a good plan is to search for other likely category names. For example, you used Category:Birmingham, UK; we simply use Category:Birmingham but perhaps more to the point, on File:Tree in winter 09.JPG (I haven't had time to look at the others) that is completely redundant to Category:Edgbaston Reservoir, since everything at Edgbaston Reservoir is in Birmingham. Similarly, there is no need to do both Category:Tree and Category:Trees and in any case, the more specific Category:Trees in Birmingham would be better.
  • There's no dropdown because there are about a million categories. You really have to search for them yourself in a separate tab.
  • Certainly not a "gallery" in either of the senses that term is commonly used here, but you should be able to see your uploads at Special:ListFiles/Dumbledore-of-Awen.

@Dumbledore-of-Awen: I've done better categorization on File:Tree in winter 09.JPG to give you an example. - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

'Heading' refers to the direction you were looking when you took the picture. According to the Location documentation, "It is given as degree values 0-360 (clockwise with north as 0) or a compass point abbreviation (up to four letters) as defined in Points of the compass. (Example: heading:NW)". See Location for more info. It's optional, but if it's easy for you to determine you can include it. BMacZero (talk) 19:57, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Please let me know what must I do to satisfy the License conditions?

--ALZ (talk) 11:23, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

You need to make George Gershwin and Lidia Kavina release this recording under a free licence. Also see Commons:OTRS. Ruslik (talk) 18:41, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Is it possible to upload this painting?

Hello!

Is it possible to upload this painting? Any helpful advise would be great. Bests - LouisAragon (talk) 21:23, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Yes, absolutely. It would be good to make sure we do not have it yet (unfortunately I do not have time right now).--Ymblanter (talk) 21:49, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
The original painting is clearly in the public domain, as the painter has been dead for several hundred years. The photographic reproduction of the painting may be protected by copyright in the UK, and according to the page you link to, the National Trust for Scotland is apparently claiming to hold copyright. Commons policy is to ignore such claims. This of course has no impact on the actual legal situation, and users are responsible for their own uploads. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag for details. LX (talk, contribs) 21:50, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
Be careful to crop out the picture frame, which is not a 2D object and not covered by PD-art. It's a pity that the photograph is so poor, in particular that it's not straight and doesn't even contain the complete painting. --rimshottalk 22:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Image Permission

https://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous.php?doit=Do+it!&username=Fornaeffe (and you'll probably want to check "Show details"). I see a link to that tool ("usage of all files") at the top of all user pages, but I'm not sure if that's dependent on gadget or skin selection in your preferences. LX (talk, contribs) 20:04, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Huh. Any idea whether "images used" is about distinct images used, or counts more than one if the same image is used multiple times? - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Jmabel: At the bottom, you'll see both "total image uses" and "distinct images used". The figures for the individual projects add up to equal "total image uses". If you select "Show details", you get a breakdown for each image ordered by the number of times they are used, which is what Forna asked for (if I understood correctly). LX (talk, contribs) 21:41, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Perfect, thank you very much!! No, I don't see the link to that tool, but now is on my favourites menu. --Forna (talk) 14:09, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Another option, more visual and that shows exactly which images are used where, is to use Commons:MyGallery: clicking the red question marks will indicate global usage on Wikimedia. Animalparty (talk) 19:13, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

The only possibility for uploading that to Commons is if the copyright holder agrees to release it under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, and that's probably not going to happen. You may be able to upload it locally to the Russian Wikipedia project if their rules allow it. If you have questions about that, ru:Википедия:Форум/Вопросы is probably the place to go. Wiki-Folks,

I'm putting together my first Wiki entry and I'm having difficulty understanding how to upload images with an appropriate copyright.

The entry is a bio on my grandfather, who was an artist and died in 1969. I wish to upload an image of him and several of his works. The image of my grandfather has been used for years to portray him, and the images of his work are of works that are owned either by myself or other members of my family who have given me permission to use them.

Simply stated, what is the appropriate copyright status under which I should upload this pictures?

Thanks for your help,

Jack Joy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jackxjoy (talk • contribs) 20:52, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

  1. "[h]as been used for years to portray him" says nothing about copyright status. There are a series of questions that are going to need to be answered to sort that out. For starters, who took the picture and in what country?
  2. If he died in 1969, then in almost certainly all works of his that were copyrighted at the time of his death remain copyrighted. Ownership of physical works is irrelevant to intellectual property rights: the question is who was the heir to his intellectual property rights (possibly by now it may be relevant to ask "and who is that person's living heir")? That is the person who needs to give permission. If it is you, then you can just use the Heirs-license template, providing the license you want to grant as a parameter. If it is someone else, they will have to grant a license via the process described in COM:OTRS. NOTE that on Commons, pretty much the most restrictive license we allow is : you must allow free reuse, including commercial re-use, and people must be allowed to make derivatives. On the other hand, you can require a credit of your choosing, and can require that it be indicated that the use is on the basis of a Cc-by-sa-4.0 license.
I hope that helps on the second part; again, on the photo, who took the picture and in what country? - Jmabel ! talk 01:42, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Creating a PIB Licensing

Hi, there is a need for PIB Licensing to be done based on the below mentioned link which describes the content in the PIB website can be used free with attribution. http://pib.nic.in/newsite/terms.aspx#copyright "Material featured on this website may be reproduced free of charge and there is no need for any prior approval for using the content. The permission to reproduce this material shall not extend to any third-party material. Authorisation to reproduce such material must be obtained from the departments/copyright holders concerned. The material must be reproduced accurately and not used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context. Wherever the material is being published or issued to others, the source must be prominently acknowledged. "

Does "reproduced accurately" mean that image modification is not allowed? Ruslik (talk) 20:14, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

I requested and received permission to use images owned by a company. The company e-mailed "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" with copyright releases, attached images, and source URLs (on their domain). They then received a ticket number from OTRS which they forwarded to me. I have not yet uploaded these images to the Wikimedia commons. When I do upload these images, how do I specify that there is an existing ticket for the e-mail with copyright releases? Thank you.Tale.Spin (talk) 03:45, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

If you are confident that the permission meets our requirements and you know which free license the company agreed to release their content under, you may upload the files at any time. In addition to providing the source, author and licensing information, be sure to add (or whichever date the e-mail was sent) to the file description pages. It would be a good idea to mention the ticket number in the permission field of the information template. If you want to inquire about the status of the permission, see Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. Please note that the volunteers processing the permissions are often severely backlogged. LX (talk, contribs) 16:13, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Great! Thank you. One more question, the copyright is held by a company with the image author being unknown. What should I put for the author when uploading? Can I put the company name? Tale.Spin (talk) 19:11, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

If the work is a work made for hire in a country that does not require attribution of actual individual creators (the United States apparently does not require it), then yes, the company may be listed as the author. LX (talk, contribs) 20:09, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Scaling a very high res B&W .png file

File:Brennan_monorail.png went a bit strange when I put it through CropBot earlier, becoming quite faded and patchy. Looking closely at the original, it looks like it was scanned from newsprint at a very high resolution, but then saved as a two-colour black-and-white .png file, with the newsprint graininess becoming even more dithered as a result.

Uploading images of my sculptures that are photographs taken by people other than myself

Dear Wiki People-in-the-Know,

I was confused when I uploaded images of my sculpture. I knew that in order to upload that I must have free license permission from the photographers. I took the standard form and asked each photographer to send it by email directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org What I did with my copy of these forms I believe is incorrect.

I have questions about the filing process for each of my 4 uploaded images.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Charles_Sherman&ilshowall=1

I cannot edit the titles of the images I uploaded of my own work - is there someone out there who could please assist me? It would involve deleting the present titles and pasting in the correct one. Likewise, I would like the descriptions deleted and the correct ones pasted in. Or is that something I can do myself on the Edit page?

I would like the Titles / Descriptions to be:

I.

Title: "The Two Faces of Eve" by Charles Sherman

Description:

"The Two Faces of Eve" (1996) is a bronze sculpture on an alabaster base, 28" x 12" x 8", and is part of The Bible Series by Los Angeles-based sculptor Charles Sherman. Photo by Mindi Sparks

Regarding the copyright:

Since Mindi Sparks emailed her free license / public domain permission directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (see file), is it necessary to also include her permission letter on the file? I would like it removed, if possible, and instead have a short citation (or abbreviated code - whatever is appropriate.)

Lastly, is the Copyright box I checked correct for this situation? I think that it is.

II.

Title: "The Hand of Creation" by Charles Sherman

Description:

"The Hand of Creation" (1997) is a bronze sculpture on an alabaster base, 22" x 17" x 13", and is part of The Bible Series by Los Angeles-based sculptor Charles Sherman. Photo by Jean Ferro

"And the serpent said unto the woman: Ye shall not surely die." Genesis 3:4 I have realized Eve dancing with the serpent, looking deep into the eyes of serpent and realizing that it is a mirror image of her own face. Eve may have lived longer than anyone else in the Bible; her name means "Mother of All Living Things." She may still be with us today. There is no mention in the Bible of the death of Eve.

Regarding the copyright:

Since Jean Ferro emailed her free license / public domain permission directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (see file) is it necessary to include her permission letter on the file? I would like it removed, if possible, and instead have a short citation (or abbreviated code - whatever is appropriate.)

Is the Copyright box I checked correct for this situation? I think that it is.

III.

Title: "Continuum" by Charles Sherman

Description:

"Continuum" (2013) is a monumental clay green ware infinity ring or Mobius sculpture , built on site by Los Angeles-based sculptor Charles Sherman at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles, California. Photo by Lisa M. Ezell

Copyright:

Since Lisa M. Ezell emailed her free license / public domain permission directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (see file), is it necessary to include her permission letter on the file? I would like it removed, if possible, and instead have a short citation (or abbreviated code - whatever is appropriate.)

      • The Category is incorrect on the listing. It should be: Sculpture
      • The Copyright box I checked is incorrect also. It should be the same as the other two images by photographers other than myself.

The fourth image, "The Birth of an Idea" is a photograph taken by me. I believe that I checked the correct copyright box.

Can someone please edit the title and description for me?

Title:

The Birth of an Idea by Charles Sherman

As mentioned above, I cannot edit the titles myself. Are the other edits the images need allowed?

Many thanks to anyone that can take the time to assist me!

  • We usually don't change titles (file names) unless they are basically useless or actively misleading. This is because it messes with older links and URLs, and we consider stability a higher priority than getting perfect (as against merely good) file names. However, everything else can be edited.
  • In general, there should be no problem with making any other appropriate edits. Just go to the relevant file page, click "Edit", and have at it. In particular, you may freely edit the descriptions.
  • Assuming the permissions emails have been sent as you said, you can just put in the permissions area and get rid of the whole verbose discussion. Of course, you should still leave a photo credit, which I gather is your intention.
  • Your post above was rather long, and I may have missed something. Just continue here if we have further questions. How do I upload a photo of myself - taken by me - on my existing Wiki entry? Seneca62 (talk) 20:19, 16 January 2016 (UTC)

  • When you say "my existing Wiki entry" I presume you mean an article about yourself, right?
  • You can upload in any of a number of ways; I gather that the recommendation for beginners now is to use Special:UploadWizard.
  • Once the picture is uploaded en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial indicates what to do to get it into an article. The short version of that is that you typically include it by putting in the wikitext. - Jmabel ! talk 17:45, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Photo in my possession

I'm writing an article about Monsignor Valerio Anzino (1832-1899). My mom found a photo of the Monsignor in a box of photos from my grandmother. My grandmother was a first cousin to Monsignor Anzino. The photo appears to have been taken in a studio in Rome in the 1880's or 1890's. Can I include this photo in my article? If so what do I need to do ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oldsportbiker (talk • contribs) 22:07, 16 January 2016‎ (UTC)

Uploading a photograph in a Wiki Page

I have uploaded a photograph of Katyayanidas Bhattacharya (Indian Academician who died in 1966).How do I display it in the Wiki page of the person ?Bold text — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gautam Bhattacharya (talk • contribs) 08:58, 17 January 2016‎ (UTC)

  • Are you serious that this is your own work? Obviously the date is wrong -- you can't have taken the picture 50 years after he died -- and since he is rather young in the photo, if this is your own work, then you must be at least in your 80s, which seems unlikely.
  • That said, if there is some basis that the picture is in the public domain or under a free license, you would typically place it in an article by the wikitext . - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

delete my picture from another uploader

Someone uploaded my picture, and I don't like it. I talked to a person who took the pictire, and he said he had no idea someone opened a page from his name. the link is here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maria_Gevorgyan_Yerevan_2013.jpg please delete it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chesspics (talk • contribs)

Chesspics, you did not upload that image, so there is no evidence that it is yours. --Achim (talk) 20:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
@Achim55: I think she is saying it is a picture of her, and is asking for a courtesy deletion because it is not a good photo (although she didn't say so very clearly). @Chesspics: is that correct?
If that's the case I think we should grant that courtesy deletion. We have some quite good photos of her, e.g. File:Maria Gevorgyan.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Near-duplicate image (resolved)

I'm not sure on the process for dealing with this, so am raising here for local experts to handle. I've spotted two images that are essentially the same:

The former has richer colour and a higher resolution (also uses the original language name of the painting in the filename), so seems the better to retain. Suggest merging the latter in via redirect? Consideration needs to be made for combining categories where appropriate. Any issue with how the images are used by other sites, if a redirect is applied?

Thanks! -Stelio (talk) 09:48, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Found two more images of the same painting:

-Stelio (talk) 10:03, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, These are not exact duplicates, and are all in use, so we keep them unless there is a copyright issue. However File:French Revolution-1792-8-10 w.jpg is a low quality, used only once, so it could be deleted if replaced. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:10, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

New audio file upload mishap

I uploaded the file File:En-us-shift.ogg a good while back, and I've since uploaded a new, better version of it. The only problem? I'm still hearing the old, presumably cached version of the file when I play it! I tried reuploading to see if it fixes the glitch, but it still plays the old file. The new file I uploaded is there, as evidenced by the file history, but for some reason it refuses to be the "current" version of the file. The first and last version of the file are, as of this writing, playing the old version of my recording. The two in the middle are playing the new version. I've uploaded files to other MediaWiki wikis and usually only had to wait about five minutes for the new version of the file to take effect. Here, it's been hours and I still hear the old version.

Anyone got advice or can do something about this? —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 14:26, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

You might need to clear your browser cache. It's usually Shift-F5 or Ctrl-F5. BMacZero (talk) 02:29, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Reuters are the copyright holders. 6cb49af5c4 (talk) 22:38, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

They're marked as the source of the image, but they're unlikely to be the copyright holders. If the footage is from a pre-positioned surveillance camera with no operator controls, it may be deemed ineligible for copyright protection in some jurisdictions. I don't know whether the legal situation in France is clear on this point, and it's not clear whether this camera had any operator controls. If the image is eligible for copyright protection, the copyright is likely to be held by the camera operator or whoever installed the camera. Without knowing for sure, we must err on the side of caution and assume it is copyrighted and non-free. LX (talk, contribs) 22:55, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi there

There is a photo i want to use on your site. It says: This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported, 2.5 Generic, 2.0 Generic and 1.0 Generic license. You are free: to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work to remix – to adapt the work Under the following conditions: attribution – You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). share alike – If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Tonyagramunt (talk • contribs) 18:40, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

You can use Speedydelete template. Ruslik (talk) 20:08, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

I landed at United States presidential election maps and wanted to browse through the images in the category without having to open every single image description page. However, I was dismayed to find that MediaViewer does not seem to be available on this gallery page. There is the JavaScript "Gadget Slideshow" button in the top-right, but that functionality is quite badly implemented and difficult to use. (For example, it opens with a "Keyboard Help" window; a simple category browser should be easy enough to use that you don't need to show the user a "Keyboard Help" message when it is opened.)

Is MediaViewer intentionally disabled on gallery pages? If it is, could it be possible to link the slideshow button in the corner to MediaViewer instead of the gadget? This, that and the other (talk) 09:25, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

Well, the Wikimedia Foundation did their best to force everyone to use the Media Viewer, and I haven't kept up with every twist in the drama, but I think it may be disabled by default for all logged-in users. There would be several reasons for that. For example, since it hides a lot of essential information like categories, other versions etc, it's pretty useless for anyone wanting to use Commons as a media repository. Since it's a read-only interface, it's also pretty useless for anyone wanting to do actual work here. Anyway, if I log out, go to that gallery and click on an image, I get the Media Viewer. Check your setting in the "Files" section of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. LX (talk, contribs) 01:10, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Crop and upload existing work.

I would like to crop an existing image and upload it again. I've read around for about an hour but I can't seem to find any concrete answers about the conduct of me as an uploader here. This is the work in question 1.

I want to crop out the lower part of the picture since it doesn't meld with my intended use. I need it to be more square-shaped instead of portrait-shaped. It feels unnecessary to host the cropped image myself. It'd be more useful and more easy for other to use it if it could be found on the wikimedia commons.

What I'm wondering is what the guidelines for uploading a cropped version of an existing work are. I seem to be revisting this situation every couple of weeks and the sheer amount of potential reading material about this tend to leave me exhausted and without answers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kxxvii (talk • contribs) 14:03, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

  • In this case, you will certainly want to upload your cropped version to a different name. Anyone else using this in its current form should not be affected
  • There is a crop bot out there; I've never used it, but someone can probably help you with that.
  • Without the bot, you can download the full-resolution version to your own machine, crop that with any tool (e.g. MS Paint, GIMP) and upload under a new filename. Use basically the same file info, plus a statement in author about you having done a crop. Link the two images in the "other versions" fields by using Extracted from in your new page and Image extracted in the existing one. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
COM:CropTool is a very useful for this. If you enable it in your "Preferences->Gadgets", you'll get a link to it in the left bar when you're on the image page. It will let you select the region you want and instantly upload the crop as a new file. The cropped file can keep the same license etc. information as the original. Guten Morgen! Coyle Theater, Charleroi PA

The picture is greatly outdated - go here for new pictures that showcase all that has been done to restore, preserve and renovate the Coyle Project site since the end of last year. https://www.facebook.com/The-FOTC-True-Friends-in-the-Valley-703363333085518/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.126.42.146 (talk • contribs) 09:27, 31 January 2016‎ (UTC)

Having summoned my psychic powers (actually, I used the search function), I'm going to hazard a guess that you're talking about File:Coyle Theater Charleroi Pennsylvania.jpg, which documents what the property looked like in 2009. Newer photos would indeed be appreciated, but unfortunately, none of the ones at Facebook are free. Seeing as this is the help desk, is there something we can help with? Do you have a question? Oops! Looks like you forgot to ask an actual question. Anyway, since the file in question is a non-free photo grabbed from the Internet, I've tagged it for deletion. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons before attempting to upload anything else. LX (talk, contribs) 11:35, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

book cover

Hi people of Wikimedia Commons,

I'm looking foreward to uploading a photo that I took by myself. It is a photo of a book. I wander if it's legal because of the cover since it's someone else's piece of art. Can somebody help me, please?

Greetings, --Hein Mück (talk) 13:49, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

No, that would not be legal, unless the cover is ineligible for copyright protection, its copyright has expired, or its copyright holder has agreed to publication under a free license. Taking a photo of a non-free, copyrighted book cover does not magically liberate it from its legitimate copyright holder. See Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Book covers. It depends on how this book cover looks like, in other words on how original the cover is. If it only has the title and the author printed on it and nothing else, it will be ok. Ruslik (talk) 18:28, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Correct Tag for Uploading Content from Massachusetts State Government

The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's office states on their Archives page that, "Those records created by Massachusetts government agencies and institutions held by the Massachusetts Archives are not copyrighted and are available for public use." I would like to upload some images and illustrations from the "National Register of Historic Places" registration form for Tewksbury Hospital. The registration form was prepared by Massachusetts Historical Commission. The completed registration form can be found at (Click the "NR" Button). What sort of public domain tag should I use for this? Thank you. Carl Henderson 02:39, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

It sounds like you're looking for PD-MAGov. LX (talk, contribs) 06:44, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
