Need to know how to specify a permission.

Thank you for your answer. I don't actually need an introductory tutorial, though. My question refers to the most recent article I wrote. I uploaded two pictures which I have permission to use. However, I haven't properly credited that permission because I don't know how to do it on Wikipedia. I can't seem to find the specific case for when the person who owns the picture isn't the one who took it (eg, they hired a professional photographer and paid them for taking the pictures). I'm not sure how to properly do this, and the pictures will be deleted in a few days if I don't get it right. Questions about logos and licensing

Okay, two questions. First, if an image on Flickr is released under CC 2.0 BY, does that mean that they have to be attributed on every Wikipeida, Wikibooks, etc. page it's used on, or just the image description age? Second, I was wondering if this image is technically available under a CC license because it pictures a flag that has the copyrighted University of Chicago logo on it. Being attributed on the image description page is enough; you don't have to put it in each caption. In the image, the use of the logo is considered de minimis and so it would not be restricted by the logo's copyright. --Yarnalgo (talk) 02:18, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Reference Cite In Wrong Positions

Hello, the reference cite for the second images on both the Tony Hawk and John Robert Colombo wikipedia pages is on the far left page while the images is on the right.

Also on the John Robert Colombo page, on his list of humour books there is a line above the list. this should be removed because it makes the table of contents list humour as a seperarte section. Thanks. Please help. 216.95.8.144 01:07, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Logo

License migration deadline

While I am doing license migration in ko:wp, I found problematic file, ko:File:134nopodong2.jpg. Original upload date is before August 1, but re-upload date is after August 1. What should I do? --Kwj2772 (msg) 13:53, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Logos

Hi, I uploaded three logos of my organization and they were deleted. It's my first time to use the commons and to post in wikipedia. What should i do for proper posting and uploading of logos? Thanks in advance!

Logos which contain artwork are covered by copyright and are not allowed on Commons. Only a few logos with plain text and simple geometric shapes can be uploaded here. Sv1xv (talk) 20:07, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

If there is an article about this organization, you may upload the current logo on Wikipedia for use specifically in that article and add a "Fair use rationale" explaining why this logo is useful for the article. Normally a non-free logo is allowed only in the article about the organization (for identification), but not in other related articles as decoration. Sv1xv (talk) 20:27, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not sure the best method to upload a logo that the company has publicly said can be used in this case http://www.greatclips.com/logogdlns07.pdf the company says the logo can be used, I'm not sure if it should be in commons or directly uploaded to the Great Clips page. Look at other examples in Category:Logos to see how they are licensed. To my non-attorney eyes, the Great Clips logo does not appear to use any copyrightable artistic elements, it's just a short string of letters in an ordinary font. See COM:CB#Trademarks. To be on the safe side you could contact the Great Clips company and ask them if they are comfortable with having you upload their logo to Commons. The Google translation of your question is not the best, so I am not sure what you asking. I am totally frustrated. I have been editing and enjoying Wikipedia for about two years now.

However, I am not able to place a picture on an entry. I have spent 2 full hours trying to place a picture on a wikipedia page. I have followed every direction exactly as it is explained.

Do you first upload the picture to the Wikipedia Commons? Then, when you write "[[image:" what do you write next? Do you write original file name of the picture? Do you write the title at the top of the Commons entry page? Or do you write the new title that is in the entry of the picture (it added _'s between each word in the title in one Commons file I created.)

As you can see, I am very confused and very frustrated.

I think I may have accidentally deleted someone

I am new and feeling like I have a very low IQ at the moment. I am finding this site SO complicated to find things and I have been making more errors than I want to admit. I don't think you have enough room here for all the questions I have about what to do, to not break more rules, but my main concern now... is that I think I deleted someones page and I can't find a way to contact them and tell them it was an accident as I had a question about what they deleted of mine. I don't want them to think it was retaliation. The page in question is: User talk:Foroa/archive 2009 I was trying to see if they had "moved" something of mine and so I hit the move button on their page and I think I moved or REmoved it, but I am SOOOOOO illiterate here, I can't tell. If someone more educated here could let her/him know to check and if it is deleted, PLEASE tell me how to undo it, I would be very grateful. I am so afraid because of all my unintentional screw ups, I am just going to get myself deleted. I think I have already been "banned" from a couple of spots through accidental rule infringements. Search

Hello, i have uploaded a few images of rockmusicians taken by me. I used them already on the dutch wikipedia. For instance my picture of Tjeerd Bomhof, singer of the Dutch band Voicst link I made an article about him on the Dutch wikipedia and included this picture. link. It worked all perfectly well. misspelled category

Public domain types

How come there's an "I found the file on Google or a random website" part in the "Public Domain" copyright category if all files put in that part of that category are deleted without further notice? Squibbon (talk) 17:13, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

You would have to ask the person(s) who added that option to the upload form. You might be able to identify those people starting from Commons:Redesigning the upload form. I would guess they added it because some users don't read the instructions and therefore try to upload images they found on the Web which are not free content. Most images that appear in a Google search or a random Web site are not free. If no such option appeared on the upload form, users who don't read instructions might select an incorrect license that appears to be legitimate, making copyright violations harder for competent users to detect. --Teratornis (talk) 20:00, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Public Property is not subject to copyright?

I would like to upload two pictures from the Illinois State Archive web-page. One is of the building that houses the archives and one is of the archive buildings namesake. I understood that since they are public property this would mean they are open for public usage and not subject to copyright. Is this true? If it is what tag do I use to indicate this?

File does not show the image.

What have I done? I have created , with image uploaded apparently correctly. Everything about the file is as I would expect except for the image; instead of showing the image, the file provides a link to USS_Hetzel.tif‎. That is the correct image, but the user has to follow the link to see it. Is the problem the underbar in the name of the image? If so, what can I do about it? Wikimedia does support the upload of tif files, but the wikimedia servers doesn't show the images, they are only here so more people could work on them and share them on Wikimedia Commons.

When you want a image to show you should use a .jpg, .gif or .png extension, those image will be shown inside articles.

Commons category links from Wikipedia

A category I created (Allerheiligen Hofkirche, Munich) was recently deleted and replaced with Category:All_Saints_court_church_(Munich). I don't care about the name; but now the links from the German and English Wikipedias lead to this unhelpful page: [1]. No. Also interwikis between Wikipedia articles can change - but updated by bots very frequently - the content on Commons can change too only the bot suport to maintain links to Commons (using templates Commons and Commonscat on wp) is not much. In cases a very common name in one language is moved to a common name in english a soft category redirect ({{seecat|All_Saints_court_church_(Munich}}) can left behind. are not conform to their original files, but inexistant or conform to a previous erroneous version of the file. How is it possible to obtain a more up to date thumb or preview, knowing that the original file is now OK (and has uploaded twice without effect on the auld preview or thumb, whatever) but its preview is not updated, seemingly. Audio Upload

I have an old recording from 1940 of a man talking about his experience in pre-war Germany. I'm currently creating a Wikipedia page on him and would like to post this audio (about 24 seconds long) on Wikimedia. The recording was aired on the BBC and is still posted on their web-site.

My questions are: #1. Is this the appropriate place to upload audio? The commons? The upload page seems to be geared toward images only. #2. Am I correct in thinking that the BBC owns the copyright to the audio recording even though I have permission from the family of the man speaking, and I have the original recording - I'm going to have to obtain some sort of license from BBC in order to use it?

Any general guidance in this area would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Follow the procedure in COM:OTRS to document permission from the BBC, if they will provide it. I'd assume the BBC owns the copyright unless you can prove otherwise. Commons accepts audio files, for some examples see: Category:Audio files. See Commons:Media help which is about playing audio files. See the links under COM:EIC#Copyright and COM:EIC#Media for more information. I've never uploaded an audio file here, so that's all I've got. --Teratornis (talk) 20:17, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Valid licence

I checked all your images, added available date and author information and corrected the licence. There was no template ({{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}}) included. That is the reason why a bot tagged your image with {{No licence}}.

Website screenshots

Is it tolerable to upload screenshots of websites if all these conditions are met?

All images are censored.
Only short word constellations that make up the layout are visible. The main content, slogans or any substantial/copyrightable text is not visible.
The website was rendered with a browser that is free software.
The only visible parts of the browser are inside the rendered page, such as inputfields, radiobuttons, submit buttons.
The screenshot fulfills the sole purpose to illustrate what an article on Wikipedia describes (maybe as an example), which may necessitate making the depicted site recognisable.

If so, which category should it be uploaded in? Although it technically is a free software screenshot, it is first and foremost showing a website, which is the only intention.

If not, what are the conditions? Do you want to see my screenshot for yourselves? aNordal, 14:42 UTC, 5 September 2009

The most reliable method would be to show your redacted screenshot to the copyright owner, ask them if they will release that redacted version under a free license, and then document their written permission by following the instructions in COM:OTRS. The copyright owner is ultimately the party which decides whether to complain that their copyright has been violated, so they can judge better than us whether you have redacted enough. Otherwise it would be difficult to guess whether you have redacted enough to avoid creating a derivative work. --Teratornis (talk) 20:23, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

OK, I added the photo to the article. However I am not happy with the copyright templates used for this image (unless of course you took the photo yourself). If it is a US Navy image, then it should be tagged with {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}}. If the photo was taken by a journalist or a private individual, then we do have a problem with its copyright. how do i link a wikipedia file to a commons file when editing

i would like to upload an image (portrait) from commons to a Wikipedia website (biography) - i've been trying for a while and get the title but no image/link (the image is garland Robinette 2008.jpg)

See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial, use the text [[File:Garland robinette 2008.jpg|thumb|description]] at the beginning of the Wikipedia article (below the problem tags, above the text). Misspelled category name

I created the category Books by Friedrich Nietsche, and then I noticed that the letter z is missing from Nietzsche. How can this be corrected?

See Commons:Rename a category. To display a link to a category inline, put a : character before the Category: namespace prefix. I fixed the category link in your question - you had actually categorized the Help desk into that category. See Help:Category. The same colon-prefix rule works for displaying links to files inline rather than displaying the files themselves. For example File:Mexican Petroleum Production.PNG. How to add GPS information?

Hello, I uploaded [File:Blind Boys of Alabama in Quebec.jpg] and I want to put GPS information on the description page but I don't understand the instructions at Commons:Geocoding. This concert took place at the Place d'Youville in Quebec City (no English article available). Would someone mind inserting the geo info for me? Thank you. False copyleft claim

Actually I was asking a question, and apparently LovesMacs’ reply is the answer. (I didn’t think the problem was the volunteers but rather a broken system. On English Wikipedia {{Npd}} results (if valid) in a speedy deletion. Renaming categories

Hello wikimedians. I've uploaded images recently but skipped the "category" part. I then tried to upload a new version of the files and noted the category in the description field. I hope I was able to follow the instructions in adding a category in a rightful manner. I later found out that there's already a category made by a wikimedian which my images should've definitely went under -http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jeffrey_Hyland. How do I rename or redirect the images to that category? I hope it wouldn't be so complex for me since it's my first time to upload images here in Wikimedia. I don't see a one-click way to do it. Somebody might have a tool on the toolserver that could do this. You can look at Special:Contributions/FunkMonk and restrict the display to the File: namespace, but I don't see how to persuade MediaWiki to show only your uploads. If you are handy with Unix commands, you could download your contributions in HTML format to a text file or stdout, using wget or curl, and then grep out the <span class="newpage"> tags. It looks like the number of such tags in the HTML output of all your contributions restricted to the File: namespace would be the number of files you have uploaded. Don't know anything about Unix. But odd, I thought it would be a very obvious tool to have here, but as you said, there might be something on the Toolserver, but it doesn't work right now, right? Very little in the world of computers works the way I would have done it. I guess other people don't think the way I do. Can I Upload Files Even If They Are Not Linked?

For example, I have taken many pictures of some place article about which on wikipedia exist. But I can not add all the images to the article. Can I still upload images related to that article and place?

You can also:

Make a gallery page on Commons for the photos. See COM:EIC#Gallery.
Add a Template:Commons category to the Wikipedia article to link to the corresponding category on Commons (if it exists), or add Template:Commons to link to the corresponding gallery page on Commons.

Screenshot of a purely text-mode proprietary DOS program

I believe that a screenshot of Microsoft's DOS Shell is public domain ({{PD-ineligible}}) because:

the screenshot does not show any icons, graphics, or proprietary user interface elements — the entire user interface is pure ASCII text.
the screenshot does not show any copyrightable textual works, just a pair of filesystem trees.
in the US, software user interfaces in of themselves are not copyrightable — see Supreme Court's interpretation of 17 USC § 102(b) in Lotus Development Corporation v. Borland International, Inc. (1996).

Better avoid it. Each individual element of the screen is {{PD-text}} or {{PD-ineligible}} but the synthesis of these elements approaches the threshold of originality and creativity. File fails

File fails to upload or create thumbnail.File was png, than i made it into Jpg than i changed the size but nothing changed.file.First errors were "Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more than 12.5 million pixels" and all the next are "The file is corrupt or has an incorrect extension. Please check the file and upload again."

Documenting permission from the owner

I am so confused, I don't even know how to ask a question. I have uploaded a few images to commons, but this last one needed permission from the owner of the piece, which I emailed with a copy of the image to the email that was listed when I put the image on. Now the Nikbot is saying the image will be deleted in so many days .... I can't look for the answer because I don't know what to do!Calnut (talk) 14:45, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I first fixed the description page, you should use the template {{Information}} with saying "Description= ..." "Source= ...", not replacing the parameter names Description, Source, Date, Author, Permission with their values. The Information from NickBot comes because you not specified a license. Every image must have a license given from the copyright holder. Please ask the copyright holder for a free license or select the applicable license tag from Commons:Copyright tags following the license description or name from the copyright holder. Please make sure that the copyright holder gave you permission to a free license (or something similar) that allow for free reuse by everyone, not only Wikipedia, for every purpose including commercial use and modification. --Martin H. Categorization of archaeological sites

Hi, I uploaded my first images of some archaeological sites in Syria. I put them in the Category:Archaeological sites in Syria (sorry, for some reason, the link to the category wouldn't work with the square brackets), but I saw that in many cases, each site has its own subcategory. Should I create a new subcategory for each new site and put the images in that category, or just leave them as they are now, in which case the category Archaeological sites in Syria would become rather crowded? You can make as many subcategories of Category:Archaeological sites in Syria as you need. See Help:Category and COM:EIC#Cat for general information about categories (including how to display a link to a category without categorizing the current page into it). You might want to keep a list of all the new categories you create, on your user page, like I do here. As to when you should make a subcategory, the number of files it will contain is one consideration. Another is the presence of corresponding articles on one or more of the various language Wikipedias. If a Wikipedia article exists for a particular archaeological site, that is another reason to make a separate category on Commons, so you can link them together. See for example:

- Category:Wind power in Ohio - which uses an interlanguage link to link back to the Wikipedia article

I suggest adding a link to the Commons category from a Wikipedia article whenever the category exists, to tell other users where to categorize their new photos on the subject, and to show other users how to add such links. When a user uploads a new photo, he or she may not know the best categories for it. Many Wikipedia users don't even know about Commons yet - see how many freely licensed photos that people are still uploading to the Wikipedias instead of to Commons where they belong. Since you have an interest in archaeology, you might go around to the existing Wikipedia articles and Commons categories on the subject and add any links that other users have not yet added. For example, I see this pair that do not yet link to each other:

In my experience with editing on the English Wikipedia and Commons, only a fraction of the links we should have are already there. This may partly explain why we get questions on the Help desk here from users who don't know what categories to use for their image uploads - the Wikipedia articles they may have been reading did not effectively advertise the existence of the Commons categories on their subjects. --Teratornis (talk) 19:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Another point: you can make a new subcategory even if you have no images to put in it, as long as you think other users are likely to upload images for it. If you expect a category structure to get filled eventually, it's best to just go ahead and create the category structure, to relieve the next N users of having to puzzle out what to do when they eventually come up with some images to upload. So for example if you know there are some major archaeological sites for which images will eventually accumulate on Commons, just go ahead and complete the category structure even if some categories are initially empty. It's better for someone with knowledge on the subject to create the category structure, to guide later users who may upload photos they took while on random travel (e.g. vacation) without expert knowledge of what they were photographing. We get a lot of that in the wind power photos, so I make a little game of trying to identify the wind turbines in the photos that some users upload without having provided specific details of what they were photographing. Sometimes I can piece it together from the available clues, and sometimes I can't. Also see {{Flickr free}} if you want to search for freely licensed photos on Flickr of archaeological sites which you can then upload to Commons using the {{Flinfo}} tool or the Flickr upload bot (see COM:EIC#Flickr). --Teratornis (talk) 19:40, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Centering in galleries

How do I get images in galleries to be centered? Beaver, Pennsylvania has seven images, and I'd like to see either a row of three and a row of four, or two rows of two and a row of three, but I can't figure out how to keep it from left alignment. Nyttend (talk) 04:57, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Because Commons should generally store the highest-resolution images we can, as repository for free content. If someone wants to print an encyclopedia from Wikipedia and use this picture for a full page spread, they're going to need the full image. I've uploaded it as File:hs-2009-25-l-full_jpg.jpg, but, Raeky, you're going to need to fill in the details on the page. (Edit: Aggk. Downloading fine; uploading on my connection killed even casual browsing for close to an hour. I understand the general reasons for uploading the largest file size. I was asking the user specifically why he or she wants to upload such a large size. Many other users have been happy to upload smaller files from Hubble. If I had this problem, I would have just uploaded a smaller size and linked to the largest size for anyone who wanted to see it. Extremely large file sizes can lead to technical problems with uploading, thumbnailing, crashing users' browsers, etc. I think if someone wants to print a customized version of Wikipedia they can probably look up the original gigantic image size. Perhaps in another five years, our software will handle large images better - but by then even larger images will probably be available to cause problems. --Teratornis (talk) 21:43, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Best way to get photo taken by other (but agreed to be usable in private) to commons

I've talked to someone that has taken a photo in the US of some game developers at a public reception, and he has, by email, said it's ok to use the image as long as it doesn't personally trace back to him. I want to reduce what work this person would have to do (seeing it an inconvenience to this user) so that I can get the image uploaded to commons. That's a tough question. I think COM:OTRS depends on being able to identify the creator. Maybe the creator could identify himself via a stable pseudonym. Actually the template now on File:Mongolia, Sukhbaatar Mormon's temple.JPG is {{Rename needs confirmation}} rather than {{Rename}} (so it is not the template you used). There is nothing for you to do other than wait for someone who is qualified to act on the renaming request does so. I wouldn't worry too much about the file name as long as the description is accurate. Image filenames are only visible to editors, not to people who just read the various Wikipedias (who are many times more numerous than editors). Also, I changed the way you displayed the template in your question, to avoid improperly categorizing the Help desk page into Category:Media renaming requests needing confirmation. --Teratornis (talk) 21:28, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Originally I used the {{Rename}} but BetacommandBot changed it to {{Rename needs confirmation}}. I was just trying to understand if I did it wrong. I have never renamed anything. I normally stick to finding citation when articles I enjoy have "citation needed" notes. I'm a much better researcher then writer.

First you will have to convince them to license their collection freely and to clarify their license terms. The first image page I randomly clicked to says:

which suggests this is not a repository of free content. If the site asserts copyright over its collection, you should not upload its images here. See Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain and COM:EIC#Free. In the meantime you can find many similar pictures that are free content by searching with {{Flickr free}} and then upload them to Commons with the {{Flinfo}} tool. See COM:EIC#Flickr. Flickr is one of the few photo sharing sites that "gets" free content, although most photos on Flickr are not free. I tried to upload a picture, but you made it impossible. I tried to contact for advice, but you made it impossible. Why do you make everything impossible?

I tried to upload a picture, but was told - you must give the original source blah blah blah. But these boxes were filled in in the upload. Apart from the license, in which we are not told what to write. I just want to upload an image completely free of any copyright restrictions, but we are not told what to put in the "license' box. And everything else - orignal source etc - is ignored by the software when I fill it in.

Also had the problem yesterday when I converted a image from gif to jpeg with IrfanView. I then converted it with Gimp and Commons accepted it. But there is another problem: a few people mentioned that since yesterday they are unable to overload images (uploading an image a second time with the same name), while I as an admin was still able to do it with the same files. Help with multiple licences on collage

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to upload a collage/montage I created of public domain files on the Wikimedia commons. It's of various Virtuosi of the cello, piano, violin, etc, and it is intended for the "Virtuoso" page on Wikipedia. Because it contains so many files, I've had a hard time figuring out which licenses apply to what, and how to make that clear when I upload it.

I know the obvious answer is to upload it through the derivativeFX tool, but I've tried several times on that for the past few days, and only succeeded in crashing my computer. Can someone guide me through the steps required for manually carrying out this task?

General or personal upload problem?

Since yesterday approx. 12 UTC I can no longer upload replacements to existing files. I'm not aware of any changes to my local environment (I know, everyone says that!). The upload form is correctly filled and I'm getting the usual warning that I will be replacing a file if I continue. Regardless of whether I tick "minor change" and / or "ignore warnings" or not in any combination the upload seems to start upon submit but after a few seconds I'm prompted with the exact same upload form (one difference though: the path to the original file is void). No error msg. whatsoever... Have tried with different browsers (Firefox, IE, both latest version) on same comp and with different comp (albeit on same I-net connection). Same result always. Uploading entirely new files works just fine.

Is that a general or personal problem? If the latter, any hints as to what might be wrong? I hope that I pose my question on the right page. --Hagar66 (talk) 13:40, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Can't reupload and don't understand why.

I'm an autoconfirmed user who has reuploaded previously, but I'm not being allowed to today. I get the "A file with this name exists already in the shared file repository." message. The files I'm trying to register improved versions of are File:Klayman_Ha1.svg and File:Klayman_Ha2.svg in case that helps. I've tried to get around it by using a different file name, hence File:Klayman_Ha1_annotations.svg but there's an SVG problem there (the arrows don't appear in Commons the same way they do in Inkscape), and I can't reupload in order to fix that problem. That depends on who created the poster. See Commons:Image casebook#Posters. If the uploader did not create the poster, then the image is a derivative work. The uploader would have to get permission from the creator and document it by COM:OTRS. --Teratornis (talk) 18:43, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

When you buy a copy of a copyrighted book, you own the book, but not the copyright. Which means you cannot (legally) photograph pages out of the book and then claim copyright over them. The chewing gum package insert would most likely be under copyright of its creator. You can do what you like to the insert that you bought, but photographing it makes a derivative work. The photograph is not the same as the sticker or insert that you bought. I did not create these laws and I agree that in some ways they defy common sense. Read the links under COM:EIC#Copyright to get more understanding of how copyright law impacts Wikimedia Commons. Of course some photos get uploaded here with various copyright violations, because most users are not copyright attorneys who would understand all these laws. --Teratornis (talk) 09:25, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Problem with File uploading/updating

I get this message everytime i try to upload a new version of a file "A file with this name exists already in the shared file repository.If you still want to upload your file, please go back and use a new name. ".Also the previous update/upload of the file is not showing yet when you click on the file or on the thumbnail- you have to click and enlarge it for the last version to come up.Megistias (talk) 19:08, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

I took some photos (MetroNizami, MetroNizami1, MetroNizami2, etc.) in Baku subway station "Nizami Ganjevi". There you can see also artworks of azerbaijanian artist Mikail Abdullayev. But he was dead. I used PD-self (it shows that photo is mine), But I cannot show PD-Azerbaijan, because author of artworks was dead in 2004. Color profiles

Hi! Could it be that the Wikimedia thumbnail generator does not use embedded color profiles? I've noticed that for some images, the thumbnail looks slightly different from the image when viewed directly in Safari 4. Could this capability be added to the rendering software? I would like to upload this image becasue it fits perfectly with a wikipedia article I am currently working on. The only problem is I am not sure if I am allowed to. I have found over 100 instances of images from the Archives of American Art in commons, but just about every one is past its copyright date, and the other ones have very vague reasons it is ok for them to be here. Am I allowed to upload from the AAA? what licence do I need to put it under or what reason do I need to give? Any advice would be appriciated--Found5dollar (talk) 03:31, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm having trouble tagging the Category:New Rochelle buildings on National Register of Historic Places so it can be merged into Category:National Register of Historic Places in New Rochelle, New York. Placing image in public domain without any restrictions.

Done Hi to the great folks who help the rest of us out. I have an image of original art created by a friend. He is willing to release it into the public domain without any restrictions for uploading into WikiCommons and subsequently into a Wikipedia article I've worked on. The creator does not even want attribution. I can't find a Creative Commons license that covers this. Does anyone know if there is any special language that should be included in obtaining his permission, or do I just make it up? Der Rechteinhaber sollte angeben, dass Ihm bekannt ist das die Freigabe unwiderruflich ist und Bearbeitung des Werkes sowie dessen kommerzielle Nutzung einschließt und das die Freigabe nicht auf Wikipedia beschränkt ist. "WIKI" is not Wikipedia.
See other examples in Category:Logos.
See COM:CB#Trademarks to determine whether the logo is copyrightable. If the logo is copyrightable, you cannot upload it to Commons, unless you get permission from the copyright owner by following COM:OTRS. (Does "my logo" mean you own the copyright?) Failing that, you may be able to upload the logo to Wikipedia (not Commons) under a fair use criterion.

How to upload a picture of a person

I created the Wikipedia entry for Dr. Felixberto Cangco Sta. Maria, a noted Filipino educator who did a lot to promote the advancement of higher education in the Philippines.

His daughter, Cynthia Baron, provided me with his photo to be specifically used in his Wiki page. I'm ready to upload the file but I didn't find a suitable license category for it. Would you please tell me the license category that this photo would belong to?

Also, perhaps you can refer me to a help page that provides instructions to guide me in posting the photo in his Wikipedia page.

To link to an article on Wikipedia from Commons: Felixberto C. Sta. Maria (by the way, that article is rather messy just now; see WP:LAYOUT for starters, and move the pasted-in e-mail message to Talk:Felixberto C. Sta. Maria).
"Wiki" is not Wikipedia.
Who is the photographer? If it is the daughter, you and she should follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. Note that Commons requires the copyright owner must grant permission for anyone to reuse the photograph, even for commercial use. See COM:L.

Unfortunately, the image has been used in an big number of wikis, so I don't know, if just renaming is sufficient.

As propsed by User:Docu on my talk I will delete the image temporary so that User:CommonsDelinker will remove it from all Wikis. From Category:Hermann Matern I would say, that we have enough images of this person, so this is not needed - I will not restore it. I really dont understand why it was cropped from File:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-40000-0286, Leipzig, Turn- und Sportfest, Tribüne.jpg and named wrong. Please help me with licence

I cannot get Aagaard_NTLA_Speaker.jpg accepted for the Wiki Jane Aagaard article. The image is of the incumbent Speaker of the House of Legislative Assembly in the Northern Territory Government. It was supplied by the electoral office of the Speaker herself, is owned by the Northern Territory Department of Legislative Assembly and issued by their marketing department for free media use. Although it seems obvious that the image is licenced I cannot find any possible category that Wiki will allow. I have up-loaded three times using diffetrent strategies, all haver failed. I cannot see how this is possible even though deletion is not intelligent. Deletion was by a bot that is not capable of considering the issues. Any ideas?? Please help. Today, his widow gave me a photo of L.A.S.Johnson, she gave permission for it to be used on Wikipedia. The photographer is unknown.

To link to an article on the English Wikipedia from Commons, use this syntax: L.A.S.Johnson (or Lawrence Alexander Sidney Johnson to avoid the redirect). If the photographer is unknown, the widow cannot give permission, since she does not own the copyright. The photo will only be in the public domain if it is quite old. Also, permission to use a photo on Wikipedia is insufficient for the photo to be on Commons, which is a repository of free content - in particular, Commons requires files to be free for others to reuse, even for commercial use. See COM:L, COM:OTRS, Help:Public domain, Commons:Copyright rules, and other links under COM:EIC#Copyright. What does this mean? I have a photo of a dead botanist, given by his widow!

I know the widow of a meritorious person, who by his excellent botanical work has found his way on Wikipedia.

After his death, his elderly widow handed me his framed photograph.

And you cannot say that this photo can or cannot be used on Wikipedia. You did not give direct instructions.

I say to you. That your system of analysis and understanding or rules and regulations, is therefore flawed.

And that in this case, your determination of the facts is less than satisfactory.

If you wish to do the right thing for Wikipedia, and the community as a whole, you need to do better than this.

Your mistake is to assume there is a "best" way. There may not be any way. You haven't provided enough information to determine whether the photograph can be used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. I gave direct instructions. Read the pages I linked to. In particular read the text box at the top of COM:L so you understand the kinds of files Commons can accept. If you don't know who took the photograph, you don't know who owns the copyright to the photograph. The widow may possess the photograph but she does not possess the copyright and thus she cannot guarantee that the photograph can be used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. If the photo is old enough to meet the conditions documented in Help:Public domain then it would be usable by anyone, anytime, for any purpose, but the photo is unlikely to be old enough since the widow is still alive. On Commons we have to take copyright seriously, because copyright violations could threaten the existence of the whole project. Therefore we assume everything is not free content unless we can prove that it is. Note this problem occurs frequently, because the vast majority of photographers have never heard of copyright law or free licensing or any of that stuff, so there are millions of photographs floating around with unclear licensing. If the licensing is unclear, that is not good enough for Commons. Most people assume if they have a photograph, they can do whatever they like with it, but that is not necessarily how our lawmakers have ruled. --Teratornis (talk) 18:25, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

isn't there a problem with underage nudity?

Commons is not censored and pictures of nude minors are allowed under a few conditions, the first of which the picture must be legal under United States law. U.S. law doesn't define what a legal picture of a minor is, only what an illegal picture is. Generally speaking, illegal pictures of minors involve sexual acts or close-ups of the genital region. This picture doesn't seem to fall into that region. If the picture isn't illegal, Commons looks next to the issues of privacy and consent. The picture appears to have been taken of a person who was voluntarily naked outside, although consent for the photo to be published is debateable. I personally see nothing wrong with the photo. The girl doesn't appear to be very young, and there is a general principle that if you are outside people can see you. I am not in charge here nor am I a lawyer though so don't take my opinion as anything but my opinion. -Nard the Bard 20:36, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Bilder ohne Kategorien?

Auf meiner Diskussionsseite ist eine lange Liste meiner Bilder aufgetaucht, die angeblich nicht kategorisiert sind (BotMultichillT). Nach einigen Stichproben habe ich festgestellt, was ich ja auch wusste: Kategorien sind bei den Bildern durchaus angegeben. Vielleicht nicht immer vollständig oder sonstwie mangelhaft, aber jedenfalls - vorhanden. Die einzige Erklärung, die mir für diese und für gelegentliche frühere Unstimmigkeiten einfällt: ich benutze zum Hochladen die englische Fassung der Upload-Tabelle, mache die Einträge aber auf Deutsch. Coordinates help

As part of my effort to get more railroad-related images into the commons, I recently uploaded the image File:DART Red Line @ Union Station.jpg, but the process of doing so messed up the coordinates that the non-commons version had. Rather than study the old coordinate coding I coded afresh by the Commons:Geocoding#Google Maps crosshairs method. Failing to recognize landmarks (never been south of Route 66 in Texas), probably my guess that this was an afternoon shot was wrong, thus I reversed the direction. can't update a previous file

I'm trying to update [en.wikimedia.org/wiki/NYC_subway-4b-shrunk-2.svg] with a newer version of the SVG, but it doesn't like my attempts to upload a new version. Here is the error I get:

A file with this name exists already in the shared file repository. If you still want to upload your file, please go back and use a new name. File:$1 $1

Still not fixed, at least in my case. The message sounds "A file with this name exists already. You can't upload a new version because your account is too new. Please go back and upload the file under a new name. Once you've done that, you can ask someone at the Help desk to move your file to the name you want.".

Well, I just want to upload a new version for an image on wikipedia, and I noticed the "Upload a new version of this file" button was missing, and found out it was hosted here. I followed the link that redirected me here and I still couldn't find that button. I clicked "Upload file" and I had to log in (?!) while I thought I was already logged in. It didn't recognize my credentials, saying that my username doesn't exist. I had to register again. It seems that it uses a separate user database than from wikipedia. After I uploaded the image using the super slow and ultimately useless DerivativeFX web app at toolserver.org, I got his message that my account is TOO NEW!! WTF? I've been a Wikipedia contributor for over 6 years, and only because this site uses a different user database, which I think is ridiculous, I had to register again so of course it's TOO NEW! Uploading on Wikipedia under the same name as on Wikimedia doesn't work either (which proves all the more how intertwined Wikipedia and Wikimedia are). SVG Problem

Hello, I have a problem with the SVG file (File:Veranschaulichung der vollständigen Induktion.svg). When the file is converted to PNG by mediawiki, some fonts are decreased. There are no problems, when I view the original graphic in "firefox" or "eyes of gnome". Even saving the file in plain SVG does not fix the problem. Can anybody fix the graphic? There is some discussion of this tool on User talk:Henrik. For example, User:Melancholie gives a link to show statistics for the Main Page on Wikisource. A look at User:Melancholie's page on Commons shows a link to some page view statistics for Commons. Den Link zu stats.grok.se hat Teratornis genant. Für Bilder beachte aber, dass eine Ansicht der Bidlbeschreibungsseite z.B. in der deutschen Wikipedia nicht für Commons gezählt wird. Du musst also für alle Projekte einzeln schauen wie oft eine Bildbeschreibungsseite angeschaut wurde, dabei ist es natürlich unwahrscheinlich, dass ein Bild von einem Projekt aus betrachtet wird in das es nicht eingebunden ist. --Martin H.
