- For the 1990 US re-release, I found out you used a B-side label accidentally. Therefore, I changed the filename from "File:Unchained Melody by Righteous Brothers US vinyl re-release Eric Records.png" to "File:Just Once in My Life by Righteous Brothers US vinyl re-release Eric Records.png". Then I changed "File:Unchained Melody by Righteous Brothers US vinyl re-release Eric Records.png" from a redirect to a description page with an empty file. You may want to go back to the eBay item and click the second image. --George Ho (talk) 09:06, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

- @PawełMM: Why would you so greatly darken the image? Subtlety goes a long way. Either revise the original or revert the image and leave it to another editor. - Conservatrix (talk) 23:06, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
- It's really a pretty poor image, and finding a better one would obviously be preferable. That said, I didn't come across anything in a quick search. File:Cristoforo Antonio Migazzi (retouched).jpg is an attempt to address some of the worst flaws, but it's far from ideal. I agree that subtlety goes a long way, and, on a personal note, I think it might have been nice if you could have considered applying a little more of that subtlety to the way you replied to a good-faith contributor who had given up their free time to attempt to help you, even if you didn't like the result. - Graphist opinion(s)
- I understand that you want transparency, but, as has, I think, been mentioned to you before, MediaWiki/ImageMagick software as configured will tend to "blur" thumbnails made from png files. Here they are anyway. You can compare the full size images on the respective file description pages to see that full size they are pretty much identical, as they should be, and that it's the thumbnail processing of the png files which is introducing the "blur".
If these are for infoboxes etc., it's possible to replace the white background in a jpg with a "grey" tint to match the infobox. That works after a fashion, but it's a kludge, because if someone alters their skin/theme/css to have a different infobox background, or uses the image elsewhere, the now grey background will show, which is why, in general, I gave up doing this to cut-out backgrounds some years ago. Seeing someone else recently do this reminded me of the old 'technique'. I've uploaded versions like that (see above) in case you want to try them anyway. -- Begoon 06:15, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

- A 70s portrait, hard to reach the source of image. You can see the original of this image mentioned in the source, seems scanned. I think at least we can make its better, background and his suit, also lighting to see face more clear. … --Rafic.Mufid (talk) 04:16, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

- I had a search for the original source, and I couldn't find it either. That's a pretty awful, damaged scan. I made an attempt at some cleanup, and uploaded the result for you to look at. Feel free to revert if you don't like it - I'm not sure I like it much myself... -- Begoon 06:12, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Begoon: what you did, looks better than that damaged scan. (source is a book, the website need register and it's in Persian, just i made an screen shot of the pic, more zoom for taking an screen shot make pic worst). We can keep both files in Commons, i upload the first one again. Thank you--Rafic.Mufid (talk) 08:10, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
- Rafic.Mufid, at the website you got it from you might get a better result if, rather than a screenshot, you try right-clicking the image in your browser and "save image as", or, again in your browser, do "File-save web page-complete" (which will create a folder containing files). One of those methods may get you an image file, either of a whole book page, or just the picture. Of course, even if that works, the image may be no better quality - but there's a chance it might - so probably worth trying. -- Begoon 09:21, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon I did one time exactly as you said for the File:Ali Sami Shirazi (late 1970s).png (just needed some lighting editing). For this one i tried, its a PDF, a book printed by a second-grade print house in 1976 (seems not with a Heidelberg offset printing machine) and scanned-uploaded there many years later. Lack of more sources for this item, and this is all we can do know, keep both edited and bad-scanned file. I hope got a better result from another way, like by a local user. Compare this bad-scanned by other same time portraits from Iran: File:Mir Asadullah Mousavi Makuei.jpg, File:Khatereh Parvaneh 1.jpg and File:Mohammad Hadi Milani (1791).jpg, photographed so good. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rafic.Mufid (talk • contribs)

Díptico da Anunciação (Álvaro Pires)
-
An image without a border. PD-art-old-100 license for 2D photos of old pictures - by PawełMM
I had taken a print screen from a text acessed at Academia.edu:[2] The subject is the Diptych of Annunciation of the portugueses painter Álvaro Pires that is at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Perugia, and I would like to upload the pair of images that are at the begginning of the refered Academia.edu article. I have the text of a new article wich name will be the one of this request. But I am not able to transform the print screen in to a JPG file, in order it could be loaded, and ilustrate the article. What you sugest I could do? Can you help me? Thank you. Greetings, GualdimG (talk) 00:01, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- GualdimG, it's easy enough to download the pdf and extract the images, but I have no idea what you would want to put in the file description and licensing details. I put all the extracted images from the pdf in this public Google drive folder, as png and as jpg, so that you can grab the ones you want and upload them yourself, or, if you give us all the details someone can do that for you. -- Begoon 04:24, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon Thank you for the answer. I´ll need only the images (together in one only file) of page nº 5 - the two should be more together. The title could be: Diptych of Annunciation_Álvaro Pires de Évora_Perugia; the Description in English could be: Diptych of Annunciation (c. 1414-20), of Álvaro Pires de Évora, at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Perugia; the categories could be these ones: Alvaro Pirez D'Évora, 15th-century paintings from Portugal, Christian iconography. Thank you for helping. Greetings, GualdimG (talk) 06:36, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Ok GualdimG I uploaded File:Diptych of Annunciation Álvaro Pires de Évora Perugia.jpg. If you don't like the gradient background there are versions with black or white backgrounds in the file history which you can revert to. You didn't give any licensing/copyright details for the upload, so you should check/amend as necessary. -- Begoon 12:49, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon Thank you for the image. It´s what I consider convenient to ilustrate the article. Soon it will be published at wikipedia. Greetings, GualdimG (talk) 13:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Also note that PawełMM has uploaded a version with no frame, in case you need it for licensing. Because I still had my photoshop file open I quickly popped a version with a "smoother" cut-out in the history of that file: [3] which could be "reverted" to if it's any use. -- Begoon 13:34, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: If historical accuracy is his intent, then an overwrite of the original with renewed vibrancy of the native palette is fine. My understanding was that he sought to enhance the image beyond its original state. - Conservatrix (talk) 09:06, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Can anything be done here, Begoon? - Conservatrix (talk) 01:31, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- It's horrendously complex damage. Someone could spend a very long time painstakingly retouching it and get something that "looks better visually" but isn't quite the original (which we don't even appear to have for comparison). I have looked at this while it's been here, and I think to do a full retouch could take anywhere up to or above 5 or 6 hours of solid work, with an end result that would really be, in some respects, the retoucher's opinion rather than a faithful reproduction, because just how to "blend" the colour at the repair points is subjective and will alter the image. There are places where the damage appears to lighten or darken areas, so the retoucher has to "guess" or judge what the original luminosity/colour was. If you like, try to estimate what percentage of the image would need manually retouching, then estimate the chances of the retoucher, however skilled, getting all those little judgement calls just right, and then executing them seamlessly. I guess what I'm saying is anything's possible but I really don't like the odds of getting a good result here. Sorry but it's really not something I'd take on, because I wouldn't be confident that the hours I'd need to spend on it could produce a good enough result (and I don't currently have those hours) but maybe someone will jump in and prove me wrong... -- Begoon 02:14, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Done PawełMM (talk) 20:44, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks PawełMM. I've now had a chance to download the two files for comparison and there is something quite odd in the horizontal join going from Dublin to Galway (the middle seam). At the left edge, west of Galway, the islands look accurately butted up but, as you go east along that join, it looks like the two halves get more out of alignment as if there is a slightly increasing overlap causing roads, rivers and boundaries to get out of alignment. Look at the text "R. Shannon" above the G of Garrycastle where a small part of the text R. Shannon is missing and the river and boundaries are quite off. I know it's a big file and working with it takes time, but maybe the two halves need some minor rotation before being joined. Have a look and let me know if you are prepared to give it another go. The rest of the joins look pretty good. Ww2censor (talk) 10:53, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor: I knew about these errors. They were the result of the wrong sequence of combining larger fragments, which prevented subsequent accurate matching. I do not know if I will make corrections. Such work would require repeating the whole from the beginning because I do not have the individual stages of joining. Correcting only the wrong passages can not give good results. This is a very large file and that's why work is extremely time-consuming. - PawełMM: Indeed I understand the file size is an issue and if I was not working on a 13" laptop these days but on a large screen AND had a current version of Photoshop, then nudging the individual parts together would not be so difficult. IIRC you are using Gimp though I may be wrong on that score and I don't know its capabilities. Thanks anyway. Ww2censor (talk) 14:01, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
I will try as far as I am free, but I do not know how long it will last. PawełMM (talk) 13:44, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

- Comment, Actually Jeff G. in days long gone it was quite normal practice for the publisher to cut up large maps and stuck them on thin canvas so they could be easily folded to a convenient size and preserved better with use. They were separated by the margin you see in the original which to us may look odd, so the folds were on thee canvas and not on the map. This is a 200+ year old map and I've seen the same system used on maps well into the mid-20th century. Ww2censor (talk) 17:02, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- Jeff G., why do you frequently, oddly, comment like this on the workshops if you're not actually contributing anything? You don't seem to do anything particularly useful here (except I saw you use the crop tool once). I find it all a little confusing. Are you just looking for somwewhere to post? -- Begoon 15:47, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Begoon: I have this page on my watchlist. I used to have access to Photoshop and fast computers with lots of RAM to use it. Now, I am learning GIMP on a slow old laptop with only 512MB RAM that doesn't even support Windows 7, and the images are only getting bigger, so I keep most of my image work to myself, when I feel like doing it. I comment on many areas of this and other projects when I feel I have something to contribute, even if it is just a gesture of thanks. I categorized my image work here into Category:Photos fixed by User:Jeff G., Category:Images improved by User:Jeff G., and Category:Photos improved by User:Jeff G. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 16:12, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

- Perhaps the most interesting suggestion in all of the linked Phabricator discussions is to return jpg thumbnails for png images. It might not be appropriate all the time because the issue seems much greater when the png contains "photographic" data. People often save photographs as png because it's a lossless format, and that can be a good thing, because it avoids the fact that jpg degrades with every edit and resave. What's not so good is "blurry" thumbnailing... Maybe a "png-photo" flag for files is not beyond the wit of man, indicating that a jpg thumbnail should always be returned for a particular png? It's a crap "solution" in many ways and every "programming" bone in my body hates it, but we are where we are because of a decision to treat jpg and png differently based on file extension rather than actual content, so... -- Begoon 15:49, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

- Zigzig20s You have quite successfully uploaded many images yourself, so why ask us to do that basic work for you? Several of these requests are for basic uploads you are very capable of doing yourself and as this page is intended for retouching and other photographic improvement requests that some editors cannot do themselves, this is not the job of the volunteers here even if they will oblige. Apparently as you have found these images yourself, you have s Newspapers.com account, so why ask us to register for another account we may not want or need? I don't want to appear unhelpful or mean but it would be better to keep your requests to the specific purpose of this page as I am sure the volunteers have enough other stuff they would like to do. But I can stop asking others for help if there is a strong resistance to it. Zigzig20s (talk) 15:13, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
Ww2censor (talk) 10:05, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

- I uploaded a group photo (1902) with en:Arts and Crafts Movement pioneer Christopher Whall and students, and also a cropped image of Whall alone. I would like to use the cropped image as a portrait of Whall in his Wiki profile infobox.

- For some reason these images did not display with transparent background. They are copies of efective transparent background images, treated with GIMP and exported with transparent background. Maybe I did not use the correct options when exporting in GIMP. If you can help me to prevent this situation in my next editions I will appreciate , thank you in advance --JotaCartas (talk) 16:55, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

- Do you have another photo (of whatever quality) that includes the tip of the rock? Only a small piece is missing, but at high resolution that makes for quite a lot of ‘faking’, or for a noticeably unnatural straight edge if only the sky is restored.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 16:05, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

- Hi. Is it possible to correct the image distorted from this old book? This problem occurs other times in the book but it's usually quite limited and I can cut the border a little bit with no big effect or information loss. However, there are at least two or three pages like this one where the effect is strong. Do you think some program can fix the distorsion? you can crop the whole image from wikisource if you need it. Thanks.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:37, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- It's hard to get perfect, because the scan is very skewed, but I made an attempt. DerivativeFX, which I used to upload, created a rather silly filename from my working filename which I stupidly forgot to alter when uploading - so you might want to have it renamed if you use it. -- Begoon 00:11, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon that's good. There is no correct name in this case, but I think I will just add a "corrected" at the end of the standard name. Can I show you also the other critical images? I have not uploaded yet so you can use croptool yourself.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:07, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, just give the details of the other images here. I'll try to look at them soon, or someone else may get to them first. -- Begoon 14:53, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Thank you. So this is the worst one... this image of the Pyramid of Cestius. I can read the caption because it is copied in the summary but the page is quite distorted. An agle with the sky is missing but there is just sky there. Do you think it's possible to recover it? Does ity take a lot of time? I can also discuss with people on wikisource if it is worth it or not, of course. we could leave it blank put if there is chance to fix it, let's see.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:47, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Ugh - that's pretty awful. I put what I got at File:Angeli - Roma, parte I - Serie Italia Artistica, Bergamo, 1908 (Pyramid of Cestius).jpg. There's still some distortion there, and someone might be able to do it better, but there it is, for what it is... -- Begoon 22:52, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon thank you! It's good enough, it's just to give a decent idea. They are not unique images in the end, they are famous landscapes. This way at least I can complete the book. I will paste here more tomorrow, but the other ones are less complicated.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:14, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
So another one is this one an image of Category:Arch_of_Septimius_Severus_(Rome). I am describing it as if it were already rotated 90 degree. So, I can cut it more at the top but it would be nice to fix the rotation of few degrees and fill a little bit sky in the top right corner so we can keep more of the belltower. This shouldn't be too complicated.--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:52, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
- File:Angeli - Roma, parte I - Serie Italia Artistica, Bergamo, 1908, p.125.jpg, although it's a shame the tower was cut off like that - I guess it's not the subject...-- Begoon 00:55, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- based on the usual size of this type of image, that tower was cut also in the original photo, so it's no problem. Great job as usual--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:15, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
this one cannot be recovered in the upper part but since we are here, can you check the slight distortion at the right? It's this building. Maybe it's possible to recover with simmetry the right upper part but it's no big deal really. I just leave it to someone professional just in case he or she can improve better than i would do. thank you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:15, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- Once the distortion is removed (basically by 'raising' the top right corner to be square) you can see that the picture is from an entirely different angle to how it appears in the distorted scan, and what is lost is actually a bit of the top/top-left area. I'm not inclined to try to digitally re-create the 'lost' portion because it wouldn't be faithful and I don't really think it needs it anyway. Let me know what you think about File:Angeli - Roma, parte I - Serie Italia Artistica, Bergamo, 1908 (page 101 crop).jpg -- Begoon 23:59, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- It's fine, thank you Begoon. I am not sure about the missing pages, there might be a fourth picture to fix. Keep the task open a little bit but in the meantime, thank you again for solving these issues.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:05, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

This is not very critical but here the upper left corner of the photo is slighlty distorted. Can anyone improve that? If it is too long, we keep as it is. Thank you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 22:06, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
- Not perfect by any means, and takes a couple of 'liberties' with the original, but File:Angeli - Roma, parte I - Serie Italia Artistica, Bergamo, 1908 (page 141 crop).jpg might look a bit 'better'? In passing, the first two words in the scan, "vano lasciato", are missing from the transciption on the page you linked - I don't know if that matters, or it's a "proofreading" thing that isn't done yet, but I just thought I'd mention it, having noticed it. -- Begoon 01:24, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
- Begoon proofreading was not done. Instead of giving you the page where the image is the last missing step, I am checking those where we have not started yet. I want to be sure these tasks are over so we can close this request. I think we did all of them, but I would keep this thread open just in case. It's a matter of few days. Thank you again.--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:33, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
ok I checked all the pages again. The last distorted image is this one, but it's not so very serious. So for me we can cosider the whole thread completed. Thank you!--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:24, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Great as usual Begoon. I have revised another dozen pages and this one is also missing. Than there si another image I actually cropped before coming here that might be improved. ...and, because I just realised I've only uploaded low resolution versions of all of these, I have to upload the high resolution versions over the top of them. That takes me about 20 minutes per file, and I'll do it over the next day or two. I've done 9 hi-res of the 16 so far (marked ). But go ahead and use what's there for the others, the high-res versions will just replace them as I do them. My error was working from the images from the pages you linked, not the "image" tab - I'm not used to the wikisource interface - but no big deal as I can use the lo-res as templates, so it's straightforward enough. -- Begoon 07:20, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

- Thank you for your work, PawełMM. I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but while I love the results on the first image, the second one has a bit of noticeable white space above his forehead to the left of his hair. If that can't be fixed, I understand. Jonathunder (talk) 02:58, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
- Much better now. Thank you! Jonathunder (talk) 04:39, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- You're welcome. Getting an acceptable result on that area of the hairline was actually surprisingly tricky because the detail is very close to the background. Reversing the replacement background gradient so that it was a lot closer to the original in that area helped a lot, and even then I still lost a little detail and needed to softly 'blur' a bit, so it's still not perfect. -- Begoon 04:53, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Frontispiece of Survey of London vol.1
Article(s): w:en:Survey of London
- Request
- Grateful if you could (1) remove the pen & pencil annotations, (2) alter the paper colour to something nearer white than grey and (3) remove the faint print-through of the succeeding page's text. Ideally it should end up recognisable as a scan of a page from a 1900 book - i.e. it does not necesssarily need to be brilliant white. Thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 06:07, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
Done PawełMM (talk) 09:19, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- I tried it a little differently with File:Surveyoflondon01lond 0007 (retouched) .jpg. I didn't want to blow out the white and lose stuff like the embossed seal, and the colour is just scan artefacts or paper discolouring with age, I think - so I removed the annotations, greyscaled it and then put a series of Photoshop "lighten shadows" level adjustment masks in selective areas, limited by gradient fills. I also selectively blurred parts of the background to get rid of the page 'bleed-through'. Then I boosted the overall white level a bit. There's still some cleaning up that could be done, and it could be made a little "whiter", but the aim was for it to still look like a scan of an old page, and you have to stop somewhere... Where to stop is always hard to gauge, so I'm happy to do anything else you'd like to that version if you think it will be useful. Very small thumbnails look a little bit 'blotchy' but it's better at larger sizes. -- Begoon 10:59, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you both. I greatly appreciate the work. But it gives me a dilemma; which of the two of you do I offend by choosing the other's version? PawełMM, we go back a long way, but I'm afraid on this occasion I'm going with Begoon. Please don't hate me ;). Reason: I don't think I can cope with the greeny-yellow colour; and gosh, yes, it's embossed - I hadn't spotted that. 1853 view of the British Consul's residence in Hawaii
Article(s): Guillermo Miller, Richard Charlton, List of diplomats from the United Kingdom to Hawaii
- Request
I hesitate to bring another image to your attention, but ... here's the British Consulate in Hawaii in 1853, used on three articles. No less than five requests; I'd be very grateful if you could:
- Remove the tear running up the centre of the image
- Crop the image to remove the - I believe they're - wooden poles; including removing the ends of two poles projecting into the image
- Make, especially, the sky more uniform in colour - there seems to be dirt/watermarking
- Remove some (?purplish) discolouration found to the left of the two horses and to the right of the lower part of the tear
- More generally, use your vast experience of image restoration to make the image more fit for wikipedia use in any ways you see fit.
It's probably worth me pointing you at the LoC source for the image, lest you'd like to start from a huge TIFF; and also noting that we have that full image on the commons at File:No. 2. View of Honolulu. From the Catholic church. (original print).jpg - albeit I make no request in respect of that file - I'm not sure it's used anywhere. - This person is generating quite a lot of international news, and highest-quality images are needed. The photos above, extracted from a YouTube video, have unwanted text at the bottom. I think in both cases the removal of text could be considered minor improvements (there is no compelling reason to keep the text captions since the full video with captions is also available on Commons), and thus could be overwritten per COM:OVERWRITE rather than unnecessarily duplicated. ----Animalparty (talk) 00:17, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Article(s): en:Gillette and fi:Gillette, possibly other language versions as well.

- I'd like these pictures of key figures of The Gillette Company to be cropped and "prettied up" as much as possible. The images have distracting artifacts (especially the one of Gillette), some of which were probably introduced by the digitization process (done by Google) and some that are just inherently there due to the photos being printed on paper. I know little of image editing so I can't even tell the names of the operations that are needed or possible for each of these images.
- The images aren't of amazing quality but they're the best ones I could find. I extracted them from the downloadable .tar archive of The Gillette Blade company magazine collection, available on Archive.org.
- A cropped version of the picture of Gillette already exists here and that one could be replaced with the improved version. Pictures of Nickerson and Joyce would probably be new uploads. ---- Veikk0.ma (talk) 12:48, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- Veikk0.ma, because this had been sitting here a long time I made an attempt to reduce the worst of the repeat background moire pattern with an FFT filter to replace your unused crop at File:King Camp Gillette 1907.png. That was only partially successful, so I used some selective median filtering to try to improve on the result. I'm not completely happy with what I got - there's some 'banding' left as an artefact and some other imperfections, and it's quite possible somebody could do better than this - but there it is for you to look at anyway... I also uploaded File:King Camp Gillette 1907.jpg because mediawiki can tend to annoyingly 'blur' thumbnails it makes from png files. -- Begoon 01:35, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- I've also put the results of an FFT filter, crop and selective median filter of the second one at File:William E Nickerson.jpg. The third one, John Joyce, didn't really give me any useful results from the same processing - perhaps because the distortion in the scan has made the pattern not quite 'regular' enough for FFT to process in the same way. I didn't have time today to try anything else with that one, but I can come back to it if you think it will be useful. -- Begoon 07:39, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- Many thanks for doing this. Your improvements have made the pictures more than usable. If you think there's anything you can do about the Joyce picture I'd really appreciate it. - What can be done about the moire pattern on this photo (presuming that's what it is)? Grateful for anything that removes what appears to be an artefact pattern; thank you. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:22, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- There's a source - possibility of taking a higher resolution version - at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044108081761;view=1up;seq=20 ... one option might be more cropping? I agree that it does end up looking like a neck and head emerging from an egg. Thanks for trying, Begoon. Do feel free to pass on it. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:52, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- Yeah - it certainly might be easier to get something halfway usable from that source. Good find - I checked archive.org, but their copy of that edition has no illustrations - a photography magazine with no photographs - go figure... Anyway, have a look at File:ClaraLouiseHagins1914 (retouched).jpg now, and tell me if that looks any better to you. -- Begoon 06:37, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

I am not a professional photographer and just use iphone settings. I can provide any and all images, unsure how to do that. - Graphist opinion(s)
- It looks unnatural if all the 'texture' in the sky is removed, so tell me what you think about File:Argyle Cutting, The Rocks, Sydney (cropped, retouched).jpg. If you think that's still too "blotchy" the sky could be evened out a little more, with perhaps some very faint, random noise filtered in - but I wasn't too keen on how much that was straying from the original when I briefly played with it, so I thought I'd offer this first, as I don't think it's too awful. -- Begoon 09:42, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- That'll do fine, thank you Begoon. It is clearly an old image and I think you've delivered an appropriate sky. It's very much improved from what it was - the spotting took attention from the detail in the image. As normal, I'm very grateful to you. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:25, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

- Please delete the red region so that what remains is only the badge....--Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 02:37, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- That's probably not going to work very well, because [a] it's very intricate, so cutting it out would be extremely difficult for what will probably be a poor result, and, more importantly, [b] the 'red region' is the fabric in the presentation case, and it obscures parts of the subject - magnify it and look at the blue circles in particular. While the fabric is there, a visual reason exists for the missing detail - remove that and they will just visually appear 'chopped off'. All just my opinion of course - it may be possible to get a result you are 'happy' with by compromising. -- Begoon 04:51, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

- If it's going to be 'cut out' at all, then that's a much better way to do it, PawełMM. Nicely done. -- Begoon 12:46, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @Jeromi Mikhael, I also tried it. Replacing the missing parts was not so hard, fortunately everything is very symmetrical. Regards, MagentaGreen (talk) 16:59, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- That's excellent work, and certainly the best cut-out/artist's impression of missing detail. I do have to say, though, given the low quality original, that it didn't look at all bad in its genuine, original setting to me - the red seemed to 'bring out' the gold. If I was using it myself, and we weren't so dead set on cutting it out, I might have been tempted just to do a rectangular crop and fix the worst blemishes/shadows - but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and now there are options. Moving to png for transparency of course risks running into the mediawiki 'blurry png thumbnail' issue, and might not work well on some backgrounds which re-users might use. -- Begoon 17:50, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi again @Jeromi Mikhael, after you have said nothing to my suggestion and I'm not really satisfied with the PNG version, I've changed in my editing the background against the default color (# F8F9FA). MagentaGreen (talk) 11:23, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

- Please wait! I'll upload my edits within the next day. Merry Christmas, MagentaGreen (talk) 18:11, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- In the first picture, there is a severe yellowish cast regardless of the overexposed sky. In the second photo, apart from the haze in the downfalling clouds, there is a strong distortion due to the optical lens of the phone.
- In addition a word about the practice to overwrite originals. Sure, it's much more convenient just to transmit than to create an own description. In my opinion, however, it remains a bad habit that makes the distinction between original and editing unnecessarily difficult. Merry Christmas, MagentaGreen (talk) 08:50, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

- I'd be grateful if you could create a single image by stitching the above two images together, and a) lose the drawing borders - the lines at the left and top of the left image and the right and top of the right image b) lose "The Builder D" from the top of the left image, and the remains of "ecember 1891" from the top of the right image c) deal with the fact that the right image is sloped slightly differently than the left d) lose what remains of the "East Elevation" from the bottom of the left image and the right image e) sort out / lose the blue coloration on the right image...
- ...If you want to see the originals - or want to take your own screengrabs of them, the source is here on pages 890 & 891 - but it's a 240 Meg PDF
- Late news - whilst that link worked a couple of days ago, now, not so much. A link that might work is this, and see also this discussion from en.wiki resource requests. Not sure what's going on here :( I have a PDF copy which I could dropbox to you, if required. --Tagishsimon (talk) 07:16, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- The overall aim is to be able to show the whole of the side elevation of this building as a single image. I don't think there's much missing at the join, although in fairness it looks like the curve of the D of December is missing, so perhaps there is a tiny problem there, which might be managed by mirroring the chimney of the right image and overlaying that on the chimney of the left image.
- There's a version on page 19 of this should you want to see one that someone else has stitched together.
- I appreciate it's a big ask, not least since the grey colour of the images may not match well. But it's a fine image, and it would be great to have it in the article. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 07:03, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, and if you *really* want, you could go back to the source and create a single image of both the side elevation and the plan view together, per the page 19 example above ... but the plan looks rather grubby, so the job would be even bigger. Obvs that would mean you'd need to go back to the source. --Tagishsimon (talk) 07:10, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

- Done – the old jpeg was a bit overblown, especially in the face/forehead, so I didn't go quite that far with the level adjustments, but it can be altered if you're not happy with it. I think Marlon should be a little bit 'dark and brooding', anyway... -- Begoon 15:16, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Begoon, I really do not know how to justify overriding the work of a acquainted photographer from a well-known collection. One can argue about the quality of the derived work, as numerous experiments prove. I'd like to ask you to reset the Tiff to its original version since there is now your new version. Merry Christmas, MagentaGreen (talk) 16:33, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Begoon and MagentaGreen: I think COM:OVERWRITE is pretty clear on this point: If digital restoration work is being done on a historical document or artwork, the restoration (no matter how minor) should always be uploaded under a new filename from the original file, providing a link back to the source on which it was based in the new file's "other versions" field. Ww2censor (talk) 19:10, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

- Done, per request. Either of you was free, and welcome to do this - I have no ownership of my edits, nor would I be 'offended' in any way - I have 'feel free to revert' set up as a keyboard macro since I type it so often... If one wished to be pedantic, it's not the photographer's 'original work' - it's a scan of it, dependent on scanner settings and curation of the scanned file - although it is likely to be very close to the work as the product of a professional library. Likewise one could argue that adjusting levels is not 'restoration', which would be repair of fading/scratches/defects etc... Life's too short, though, and you make a fair point... The level adjustments remain in the tif history for anyone seeking an audit trail for the jpeg generation or to perhaps assist in generation of a new one. An argument could really be made for 'forking' a new 'retouched' tif file so that the {{Archival version}} and {{Compressed version}} templates make proper sense, so I've done that: File:Marlon Brando 1948 3 (retouched).tif -- Begoon 21:41, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

- @Der Angemeldete: I'm aware that the file is being used in en:Dana Plato; however, its quality is not very good and that is the only justification for also using a non-free image in the same article for primary identification purposes. So, if a better crop of Plato can be made from File:Nancyreagandiffrentstrokes.jpg, then it can be moved to the main infobox and replace the non-free one per en:WP:FREER. - Remove watermarks from photographic images
- These are all images uploaded by User:Cemendtaur snapshots from Australia, and they all have large visible watermarks. Visible enough that I noticed it when viewing an image at en: Kata Tjuta, and once I’ve noticed it it’s apparent even in thumbnail view. They look like the sort of watermarks that would be hard to be remove, which I think is intentional, so the other option would be to remove them from any articles they are in (which are not short of images) and delete them.--JohnBlackburne (talk) 05:15, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

- Wehwalt, since this has been here a long time I thought I'd offer something for you to look at. First of all, I don't think there's a better frame than that one to 'capture' the moment. Secondly, it's all a bit subjective, and you know what 'looks better' to you - I've often found that just doing 'something' to it will move things along, even if it's just to establish 'no, that's no better'. So, with that in mind, I applied a crop, some sharpening, contrast and saturation adjustments to File:Scott plays postman (retouched).jpg. That way there might be a meaningful discussion along the lines of: 'more/less of x would be good', 'how about x?'. Comments such as 'I hate x' are encouraged and just as helpful as 'x is an improvement' in these circumstances. Hopefully that way we find out whether anything there helps or hinders your desired result, consider alternatives, or accept what we have. I've not done any 'cleaning up' of specks/blotches/marks/aberrations, since, if we decided to do that at all, it would be the last step after general adjustments. -- Begoon 05:41, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- This section was archived on a request by: With no further feedback I've been bold and gone ahead and included the retouch in the article with a note that they should freely revert if not considered an improvement. I guess they can re-open the section if they'd like something altered. Begoon 14:36, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

- I live right near this building. I am attempting to capture the dichotomy of the paradox that in the heroin capital of Melburne Australia, there is a building that is dilapidated, for lease, and previously hosted some kind of organisation or business entitled "Technology for Social Justice". I am not a professional photographer and just use iphone settings. I can provide any and all images, unsure how to do that. I would like your help to improve the wikipedia page "Social Media Addiction" if the wiki agrees that this image can assist with showing it in an artistic yet encyclopedic way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by E.3 (talk • contribs) 09:43, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- @E.3: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). - It's difficult to give much help/advice without seeing the image(s) in question. See COM:UPLOAD for details of how you can upload images for which you have permission, and link it/them here once uploaded. If you're unable to upload the image(s) for any reason then you can provide a link to somewhere they can be found online, and someone will help further. I linked one image you have uploaded, above, to show how to do that. That image may benefit from some colour/levels correction, which we could attempt, if you like. See, as a quick example, the 'adjusted' version above: File:Technology for Social Justice (retouched).jpg - but that can be done differently if you tell us your desired result. Thanks. -- Begoon 06:11, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- I've also uploaded File:Technology for Social Justice (retouched 2).jpg, because you said you wanted to be "artistic". This is only a very quick edit with lots of rough edges that would need fixing before it could be used, but it's one example of the kind of thing you could do to emphasise the actual building. You may hate it, and I'm not a huge fan of it myself now I've done it - but I'm posting it anyway in case it stimulates other thoughts/ideas. -- Begoon 07:17, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- I should also mention that the metadata in your original indicates that it was processed with VSCO - KP3 preset. We might get better results with a photograph that has not been previously pre-processed in this way. -- Begoon 10:58, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your help. Happy to take as many images as possible. I'm also trying to do the same with the following images:
I have others here as well I'll just upload them — Preceding unsigned comment added by E.3 (talk • contribs)
- Ok, well File:TFSJ3.png is in many ways a 'better' image than the pre-processed one, showing much closer to what I expect the 'true' colours are - it's a shame it cuts off the top-right corner. Framing wise, File:TFSJ1.png is probably the best of the bunch - I wish it didn't have the car in the street, or the one reflected in the window. For reference, png is ok as a lossless 'master' format if work is going to be done, but when a final version is decided, jpg is more appropriate for photographic data, and mediawiki won't 'blur' jpg thumbnails/resizes the way it often does with png. -- Begoon 12:46, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks so much for that Begoon I'll try and take it like that tomorrow, hopefully with some interesting weather lighting and I'll just do it with no cars or bicycles. I'm trying to make it seem like everything is heading one direction but I guess its confusing the picture. E.3 (talk) 14:44, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

@E.3: I do not know what I could do with the first two pictures. The first, in my opinion, does not qualify for QI. It has a strange composition and the main motif is probably too dark. The light source was behind the object. In the second, in my opinion, there is nothing to improve. The third has a adjusted perspective. I added a retouched version with improved color reproduction. PawełMM (talk) 09:04, 28 December 2018 (UTC) Awesome thanks so much Pawel. Yeah a lot of images I like but they're clearly just for me not for commons, I can't see this because I like them, even when trying to read guidelines. I think the flag one is good tho. No idea what to do about cropping tho. E.3 (talk) 09:33, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

I made {{CA cleanup}} to categorize these photos in Category:Images with chromatic aberration problems, but since nobody is watching that (yet) I'm making this request for images that are currently in use. Note that the composite dive photo is cropped, so you may want to load the full photo (first revision) to fix the CA. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 10:45, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@E.3: Ok, it took me a while, to figure this out and I still don't know, what's the purpose with this photographs but I did some adjustment to them anyhow. I added descriptions and categories, cropped the first one and did some work on the paintings, especially sharpening, color contrast and reflexion removing. The first one is from Chicamocha National Park in Colombia other ones are from a Portuguese Wall painting in Mombasa. There are a few of them on Commons like they are summed up in Category:Murals in Kenya now. I really hope those are youre pictures, cause I found some quite similar ones on the internet (like this one). If so it, of course, still may be that you cannot remember where you took them.
The commentary on the first picture for me looks like pointless loathing for its own sake. I neither see remarkable artifacts of compression nor is there a necessity to have this file a JPG. The colors fit to the mood of the image and even the slightly grainy structure supports it. For me, this would be a Quality image without thinking too long about it. However I cropped it a bit und uploaded it as JPG so a new version would make sense at all. I hope, that's it.--Der Angemeldete (talk) 21:28, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
