Outcome discussion: make this category a DAB page

[edit]

JopkeB (talk) 06:57, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JopkeB and Joshbaumgartner: @Sbb1413: Sorry that I missed the end of the discussion! To made it complete I stated my support and my Thank at the Cfd page for changing this into a DAB!
Next question now: What to do now with the other categories still having "writing" in their name, many under Writing systems, e.g. Writing from right to left, Dutch writing or Latin writing? We need/should rename them too, right!? I would prefer change them into plural form Writings from right to left, Dutch writings or Latin writings (or is it better Written works from right to left, Dutch written works or Latin written works)!? friendly regards, --W like wiki good to know 07:38, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@W like wiki: Thanks for your reaction and for moving all the files that were still in it (well over 100 as I remember well).
  • For me categories still having "writing" in their name can stay, as long as they have correct parent categories.
  • But perhaps you are right and they should be renamed to plural forms.

@JopkeB: Yes, that were round about 180 files, oouuuf. :) Best Regards --W like wiki good to know 18:06, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thinks like this Bookmen Stacks (2400547463).jpg are better called “writings” or “written works” !? For me "writings" sounds better, but I am not English native. Best Regargs --W like wiki good to know 08:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Outcome discussion #2: the name of the new Category:Written works can be disussed later - maybe here!?

[edit]

@JopkeB, Joshbaumgartner, and Sbb1413: The most important outcome of the discussion was stated in the chapter above: to make the category Writing to a DAB page and the creation of the two subcats Writing (activity) and Written works. A discussion about the naming of the latter came not to an end (because I missed it, sorry!). It was also not priority No.1 as Josh said (I completely agreed): “the structure is probably the most important...the name can be tweaked later in light of experience.” So I kindly ask you if we can we do this now and here!?

pros for the "Written works" as Josh said: "‘written works’ is the more explicit name."

pros for the "Writings" (points from the discussion):

  • there is "a third concept: (hand)writings of persons, search with Category:Writings, because "Written works" can be works published in print/online or works in handwriting."
  • how it is handled with other creative activities:
How it is at the moment and how we did
activity product
Drawing Drawings
Painting Paintings
Printmaking Prints
Sculpturing Sculptures
Writing Written works

I invite you to find other examples for one or the other handling method. For Handwriting there is still no handwritings or hand-written works. Thx again! --W like wiki good to know 18:06, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@W like wiki: I prefer that you make this a proper Category Discussion of Category:Written works. Then people see that the category is discussed when they visit the category AND it would be on Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/02 where other editors and admins can see it and join the discussion. Here the discussion is hidden and only known to you and the three people you have invited. So I propose to make such a CfD and copy your text to there. Hi @JopkeB: thanks for your fast answer. My idea was not to make it too big or waiting again one year. The question was stated in this Cfd and we not clear it yet (also my fault, sorry!). The name was Josh's proposal and he not yet answered. If he agree, everything is fine, I think. Or what is your prefered name, "written works" or "writings"? What do you say to my argument? Best Regards --W like wiki good to know 04:47, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JopkeB, @W like wiki The once- and soon-to-be-again- (for a few weeks) absent me, checking in here, I am certainly in favor of "written works", as that makes it more clear in my mind that it is the intersection of writing and works. Writings is not wrong, as far as I understand, but its only differentiation from "writing" is the "s" and distinguishing between two categories merely based on pluralization, while technically feasible, does lead to more mis-categorization over time it seems. This is far from a show-stopper, but just one thing on the balance. Additionally, it seems semantically that 'writings' carries more of the concept of an authors body of work vs. their works individually (though the later are clearly the substance of the former). Again, this is all rather semantic and mushy, but on balance leads me to lean consistently towards 'written works' as being a better name that more instantly and intuitively distinguishes the category from 'writing' while also showing its connection to both 'writing' and 'works'. That's just my take, and may be (nay, is) informed by my origin, education, and experience, so others may have a different take. Neither violates COM:CAT policies or such, or is a technically unworkable option though. I'm not really clear on what the 'third concept' is, so no comment on that.  Agree with Josh: "written works". JopkeB (talk) 16:48, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What to do with pics like this?

[edit]

Creative.JPG put them in both: Writing (activity) AND Written works right!? Because of the pen it is a picture of the activity!? But it is also a written work!? --W like wiki good to know 08:00, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@W like wiki: Ultimately yes, you should be able to reach this file from both Writing (activity) and Written works. Actually, since the latter is a sub-category of the former (via Written communication), all files in Written works are also under Writing (activity). However, this file should not only be under Written works (for the hand-written document and the books), but also another sub of Writing (activity): Writing equipment, which has two relevant subs for this file: Writing tools (for the pen), and Writing materials (for the paper).
