I'd like to split this category, as there exists artilery recoilless rifles and non artilery recoilless rifles (like Panzerfaust). Which names would be the best? For the artilery ones we can easly name it Category:Recoilless rifles (artillery) for the other I don't have a name. In de wp we call them de:Reaktive Panzerbüchse. Category:Rocket propelled grenades is refering to the amunition and not to the weapon. Sanandros (talk) 12:12, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Recoilless rifles (artillery) makes sense to me. I'm not sure I understand the other category, but would something with the word "launcher" be appropriate? Perhaps as a subcategory of Category:Grenade launchers ? - Themightyquill (talk) 12:09, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There exits the term "Recoilless launcher" but I'm not sure how you use it in english.--Sanandros (talk) 21:06, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't personally use it at all, but "Recoilless launcher" doesn't seem gramatically incorrect or anything. If they all shoot grenades, then "Recoilless grenade launcher" might be best. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK we can do that as provisorium until somebody finds a better name. When I have time I will do that.--Sanandros (talk) 21:39, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Keep @Sanandros and Themightyquill: "Recoilless rifles" is the appropriate name for this category but it does seem that some other types of weapons have been categorized incorrectly here. Note that, "Though similar in appearance to a tube-based rocket launcher (since these also operate on a recoilless launch principle), a recoilless weapon fires shells that use conventional gun propellant." Weapons such as Category:Panzerfaust 44 are actually rocket launchers, not recoilless rifles. I'm not sure what the definition of a "artilery recoilless rifle" is, but if there is a definable sub-set of recoilless rifles that fit this definition, they can be a sub-category of the parent Category:Recoilless rifles. However, it sounds from your description that you mean recoilless rifles which fire a shell by conventional propellant, but this would actually be all recoilless rifles. What you have as de:Reaktive Panzerbüchse are not actually recoilless rifles at all, but small rocket launchers of a particular variety. Confusion is understandable as there are several types of recoilles rifles and portable rocket launchers which are nearly indistinguishable from each other in function and appearance, but the critical difference is propellant. We should keep this category with the correct weapons remaining here, and moving rocket launchers to Category:Rocket weapons (perhaps some better categories there are warranted). OK go ahead with the seperation.--Sanandros (talk) 19:54, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

stale discussion. Dispersion of the nominated category is still undone (given that it should be done, at all). Eg en:Category:Recoilless rifles is also missing topical subcategories--Estopedist1 (talk) 12:59, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Closing, category kept; as noted by Estopedist1 stale discussion and no progress as of 2021; no more 2 years later. Hatnotes or improved subcategories would be welcome if useful. -- ~~ Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:22, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
