Usage of the categories "Food of <country>" and "cuisine of <country>"

Should "Food of <country>" be a parent of "cuisine of <country>" or vice versa?

These categrories are messed up regarding the use of hierachy of these categories, e.g.in Category:Cuisine of Germany (Category:Cuisine by country and Category:Culture of Germany -- Category:Food of Germany contains Category:Food by country, Category:Products of Germany and Category:Cuisine of Germany).

I suggest to set [[:Category:Food of <country>]] as parent categories along with [[:Category:Cuisine of <country>]] (e.g. as Category:Cuisine of Thailand for logical reasons). Neither [[:Category:Food of <country>]] nor [[:Category:Cuisine of <country>]] should contain Category:Culture by country directly but this is the case in some [[:Category:Cuisine of <country>]] categories.

After we've reached a consensus, the cat. header of Category:Cuisine by country and Category:Food by country should contain a more precise definition. Currently we have:

This is a by country category. This category should only contain subcategories. Images should either be in the relevant country subcategory or in the parent category. In this context, cuisine groups all items around the culture of preparing food, including special ingredients, ustensils and equipment, cooking equipment, chefs, books and films, famous restaurants, ...

For industrially produced food, see Category:Food by country.

To me the hierarchical logic is as follows (as in in Category:Cuisine of Germany):

• culture --> Cuisine --> Food
• Products --> food

I fail to understand the logic in reversing the order as in Category:Cuisine of Thailand --Foroa (talk) 17:55, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

To put my thread simple: first comes the raw food (e.g. potatoes, apples) in order to make some dishes=cuisine. Thus, the dishes (Cuisine...) are a part of the food. The Cusine=dishes is the product of food. Products as the cat. is industrial food=packages. OK, that's just my understanding.

I request explanations on the "reverse" cat. site and on Category:Food by country because I may not the only one who does not understand the current system of the two categories and their sub-categories... My idea at Category:Cuisine of Thailand was (and still is)

Thailand along with Category:Food of Thailand (removed Category:Culture of Thailand and added Category:Food of Thailand^diff)

Ok, now I understand your drift. Well, in Commons, as far as I know, most categorisation is done in a top (highest order) --> down (lowest order) fashion, such as culture --> Cuisine --> Food --> Basic food/vegetable ingredients --> species

I call "your" order a reverse order, because you like to see it as species --> Basic food/vegetable ingredients --> Food --> cuisine --> culture. If we follow that logic, we would have to reverse category structures like cities --> province/kreis --> country ---> continent, and car wheels --> cars --> car brands --> manufacturers --> economy, church towers --> churches. (Note that in Commons, a category reference in a category refers in Commons to a higher/superior/preceding/"belonging to" category, some sort of backlinking, which can be confusing indeed) --Foroa (talk) 13:32, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Regional Cuisines

Just now I was looking at the Cuisine of Colombia. I noticed that the category of Empanadas includes empanadas from different countries instead of just Colombia. Empanadas are a common food with many variations found throughout Latin America. Should there be a)regional categories that include various countries within them or b)multiple and potentially overlapping or redundant categories for each country that have foods they share in common with others? Or is the Category:Empanadas simply misnamed (should be Colombian Empanadas or Empanadas of Colombia) and some of the files within it just mis-categorized? mrtony77 (talk) 03:31, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
