Per Cebus capucinus, "Until the 21st century the Panamanian white-faced capuchin, Cebus imitator, was considered conspecific with the Colombian white-faced capuchin, as the subspecies C. capucinus imitator." They're now apparently viewed by most primatologists as different species. Cebus capucinus does not occur in Costa Rica, however. So the images may have been categorized correctly at the time of categorization, however now that the consensus view on the taxonomic hierarchy has changed the category should probably be renamed to Category:Cebus imitator in Costa Rica. - Thanks for kicking this off. It seems the 2012 study which demonstrated the species split is considered pretty definitive (even though the IUCN are still using subspecies status; but their last evaluation predates this paper by four years), so the rename seems warranted. Peculiarly this category is already a sub-category of Category:Cebus imitator... :) --Elmidae (talk) 16:07, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
- I agree that the renaming would make sense. It is unfortunate that the species that retained the previous name after the taxonomy split is by far the least common and least commonly photographed, such that it is possible that there are no true C. capucinus photos on Commons. The photos from zoos or without location information are all most likely C. imitator, although can't be absolutely sure. The C. capucinus imitator category should also be redirected to C. imitator, since it is now considered a species rather than subspecies. Rlendog (talk) 17:34, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
