Category:Whelan Drugstore, Allentown, Pennsylvania
Whelan's Drug Store was located on the northwest corner of Center Square (701 Hamilton Street), for decades in Allentown. The drug store was a part of the New York City-based United Wheland Drug Corporation. It first opened at the southeast corner of South Eighth and Hamilton Streets in June 1931. In 1940 it moved to Center Square and in 1942 the U S Post Office established a sub-station there which served many individuals and businesses.
In March 1973, the store closed and the building was taken over by First Federal Bank of Philadelphia. The Post Office sub-station subsequently moved to a new location in the H. Leh & Company department store.
After its closure, the building was renovated. It was eventually torn down in 2011 as part of the construction of the PPL Center.
