Plat books are a specialized category of atlases, as a cadastral map they show property parcels and ownership. As Michigan's property ownership is managed under the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), plat books for areas within the state are often issued at county administration level and organized by townships, sometimes also including plats of incorporated villages and cities. As property ownership changes frequently, plat books are often an empheral resource and become obsolete quickly, with obsolete volumes usually only having historical value.
