The Oldsmobile Motor Division was an automobile brand of the American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM). It was established as the Olds Motor Vehicle Company by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. General Motors (GM) purchased the company in 1908. It was discontinued in 2004. The closing of the Oldsmobile division presaged a larger consolidation of GM brands and discontinuation of models during the company's 2009 bankruptcy reorganization. When it was discontinued, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile marque, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler, Peugeot and Tatra.
