Old maps of the Near East — part of the Middle East in Western Asia.

English: This category is supposed to collect maps focussing on the geographical Near East, usually centering around the Levant (Syria, Palestine, Israel) and often including Asia Minor, Egypt and Mesopotamia which surround the Levant. This goes along with the European notion among historians and geographers to divide Asia into "Near, Middle and Far" East. Contrast this with old maps of the Middle East, which are usually centered around Iran, Central Asia and may include Afghanistan, Pakistan and even the Indian subcontinent. Historically, the Near East was long under control of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, while the Middle East was not. For that reason, collections of old maps should not confuse the historical geographical terms with the modern geopolitical term "en:Middle East", which conflates the old geographical regions of Near and Middle East into one region.
