Matthew Taylor was a sculptor and architectural sculptor. The 19th-century British term for architectural sculptor was "stone carver".
Note: He was not a stonemason, which in the 19th-century meant a builder who used stone and perhaps carved column shafts, stringing and basic shapes, but did not - under the name of stonemason - carve designs or figurative representations.
