The Lost London Churches Project aims to promote interest in the ancient church buildings and parishes of the City of London by documenting the old parish boundary markers that are fixed to modern buildings around the city. In medieval times there were 109 churches inside the City of London - that is the "square mile" rather than the extended city (no capital C!) called London today. Although many of these churches were destroyed in the Great Fire of London of 1666, the parishes still remain today as an administrative unit although they have normally been merged with other extant churches. The project aims to photograph as many of these parish boundary markers and other memorials to these lost (and extant) churches as possible as a reminder that when you walk through the streets of the City, your feet are following a medieval path.See lostlcp.com for more details
