This is a holy well that was established in the hollow of a plane tree where a branch had broken off. Rainwater collects further up the tree in a hollow and trickles down. The opening used to be much bigger, so that a hand could fit in[1]. According to local lore, the water could cure warts, and people used to travel from far to be healed.[2]
A memorial stone for Thomas Phelan is placed at the foot of the tree. He was killed in the Battle of Carrickshock nearby.
