German-suited playing cards are those cards that use German suit symbols, i.e. Acorns, Leaves, Hearts and Bells. This system became standard in German-speaking countries around 1450 after a period of experimentation with different suit symbols. These cards used to be standard all over central and eastern Europe including Russia. Today they are still common in south and east Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Liechtenstein and northern Italy.
This category is not synonymous with German playing cards which contains all cards originating in Germany and, historically, in German-speaking states of the Holy Roman Empire. German playing cards include those with Latin or French suit symbols.
