Finlaggan was the center of the Lordship of the Isles. On the isle Eilean Mór opposite the north shore of Loch Finlaggan are the obvious ruins of a house, believed to have been that of Donald MacGilleasbuig, and of Kilfinlaggan Chapel. The excavated outline of Finlaggan Castle's great hall is nearby. These less imposing stone ruins, several hundred years old, are all that is left of a site that once must have included fortified accesses, avenues, pavements, courts, walls and wooden structures, suggested by the mounds and outlines in the grass. Of modern residences, only Finlaggan Farm appears to the north at the top of the hill. The road around it branches southward to the Visitor Center, where it ends. A modest sign on the building announces "Finlaggan." A footpath down the incline beside the Finlaggan River, a small burn, leads to a wooden walkway and bridge over the marsh and river to the island. To the south in the lake is the grassy dome of Council Island, home of the council hall of the lords. On the west shore of the lake, on the lower slopes of Cnoc an Tighe, is the ruin of an abandoned croft, Sean-ghairt. On the east side is Robolls Hill between Ballygrant and Finlaggan. The loch side was mined for lead. The Paps of Jura hang over the scene, even from such a distance.
