English: 2-4-2T locomotives were a characteristic type on British railways, around 1900. Many of the pre-Grouping railway companies used them for local passenger services. They could run in either direction without requiring turntables, their symmetrical leading bogie provided good handling for reasonably high speeds and the diameter of the two coupled driving wheels also allowed high speeds, without requiring an excessively long coupled wheelbase.
