The Bodrum Mosque has nothing to do with the town Bodrum: bodrum is Turkish for a cellar, and the mosque, a former church, has a large cellar, or rather a crypt, that used to be hidden in the ground, but excavated in 1965. It contained the graves of the founder of the church and some others (not visible, a fresco is visible, I have pictures).

The church was founded by Emperor Romanus I Lecapenus (one of two co-emperors) in about 922. He also built a small palace on an adjacent spot (where its boundaries are indicated, I failed to notice so at the time), where some five centuries earlier a huge construction of unknown purpose was planned, its dome would have rivalled that of the Pantheon in Rome.

The church is of the four-column type, popular in the 10th and 11th century, outside buttresses look like engaged columns. The church was converted into a mosque late in the 15th century by Mesih Ali Paşa.
