English: The worship of Aphroditus comes from Cyprus. A divinity, half male, half female, uniting in itself the active and passive functions of creation, a symbol of luxuriant growth and productivity. Possibly a form of the goddess Astarte or Atargatis, the deity was introduced into mainland Greece around the 5th–4th century BC. The earliest figures in the so-called anasyromenos pose (the Athenian version of the god) spread throughout Asia Minor, Greece and Italy during the Hellenistic period.
