English: Anasyrma is the gesture of lifting the skirt or tunic. It is used in connection with certain religious rituals, eroticism, and lewd jokes. The term is used in describing corresponding works of art. The act of lifting up one's skirt can be seen as an apotropaic device; warding off the enemy—or healing—curing the sadness of a deity or bringing fertility to the earth.
