English: A monument comprises statue bases implying former statues, almost always missing. The Romans took away large numbers for ornamental display in Italy, some few of which have been recovered and are in museums internationally. Many bases include inscriptions, some few on separate blocks now in museums. Monuments are usually groups of statues. Often they had a single base or were arrayed in groups of bases. The bases do much to explain the seemingly random scatter of blocks throughout the site. Typically their reconstruction depends on some ancient source, especially Pausanias. About 1000 bases have been found, only 170 in situ, and only 340 inscribed.
