The Federal Grill opened in 1997 at 536 Hamilton Street. It took its name after the opening of the new United States Federal Courthouse, located just down the block.
The Federal Grill Federal Grill looked to spark the neighborhood's dining scene with fresh, refined cuisine. Popular for both lunch and dinner, the eatery was well regarded for food like steaks and she-crab soup — and, for a time, its cigar bar. It closed down in 2008.
In 2013, a plan was floated to revive the restaurant under the same name. But plans changed and it reopened in 2015 as the Grain. Offering 58 seats, Grain featured contemporary takes on American-style comfort food like chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy. The Grain closed in July 2018, and the property is currently vacant.
