The introductions of the country, dependency and region entries are in the native languages and in English. The other introductions are in English.

This page gives an overview of the templates used to have a common layout for the Atlas. This series consists out of the following templates:

|the       =
|short name=
|native    = -
|long name = delete when not available
|map       =

|period    = Between
|capital   =

|intro     =

{{Atlas-continent
|name      =
|map       =
|population=
|surface   =
|intro     =
}}

This template is used to have a common layout for other entries.

{{Atlas-intro
| text = description text preferably in a local official or major language of the described area
| text2 = one or more invokations of {{Extra-intro}} (see below) (optional)
}}

This template creates an extra row in an introduction table. This should be placed after the status or period row.

{{Extra-intro|language|text
}}

Note: for better compatibility and layout, as well as for allowing language links at top of pages to work correctly, the implicitly numbered parameter should be replaced with the following syntax:

{{Extra-intro
| lang=language-code
| text=text
}}

where the text can contain any formatting (including equal signs), and the language name parameter is replaced by the specification of the language code (the compatible codes are those supported by wikimedia projects with the {{#language:language-code}} parser function, used throughout Commons for generating internationalized image descriptions with {{Description}}).

The right-to-left text direction is handled automatically by this template when using the supported language codes (for now: ar, dv, he, fa, ur, yi).

This template creates an extra row in an introduction table with the alignment to the right, to be used for languages with the arabic of hebrew script. This should be placed after the status or period row.

{{Extra-left|<language>|<text>
}}

Note: This template is deprecated. It is similar to the preceding Template:Extra-intro, except that it handles right-to-left languages: the previous template can now also be used with its newer syntax (with the lang and text named parameters, where lang=language-code instead of specifying the language name). The text direction is handled automatically by that template when using the supported language codes.

This template adds a content and notes and references section to each entry.

For a link in another language edition:

{{Link|Name entry|language-code}}

Map templates

[edit]

This template is used in each of the following templates and should not be used separately.

This template is used to add a map with explanation:

{{Left|Image:image-name.ext|text}}

or to give a smaller map:

{{Left|Image:image-name.ext|text|horizontalSizepx}}

This template is used to add 2 maps with one explanation:

{{Left2|Image:image-name.ext|text|Image:image-name-2.ext}}

This template is used to add 3 maps with one explanation:

{{Left3|Image:image-name.ext|text|Image:image-name-2.ext|Image:image-name-3.ext}}

This template is used to add a map with explanation, but with a legend inside (do not forget the second line):

{{Leftlegend|Image:image-name.ext}}text
|}

or the give a smaller map:

{{Leftlegend|Image:image-name.ext|horizontalSizepx}}text
|}

This template is used to add a text without any map:

{{Left-empty|text}}

Note: Template:Left0 is a (redirected) alias for exactly the same template.

This template is used to have a common layout for a former country-box inside a country entry in the Atlas.

{{Left-box

Notes and references

[edit]

General remarks:

  • The WIKIMEDIA COMMONS Atlas of the World is an organized and commented collection of geographical, political and historical maps available at Wikimedia Commons. The main page is therefore the portal to maps and cartography on Wikimedia. That page contains links to entries by country, continent and by topic as well as general notes and references.
  • Every entry has an introduction section in English. If other languages are native and/or official in an entity, introductions in other languages are added in separate sections. The text of the introduction(s) is based on the content of the Wikipedia encyclopedia. For sources of the introduction see therefore the Wikipedia entries linked to. The same goes for the texts in the history sections.
  • Historical maps are included in the continent, country and dependency entries.
  • The status of various entities is disputed. See the content for the entities concerned.
  • The maps of former countries that are more or less continued by a present-day country or had a territory included in only one or two countries are included in the atlas of the present-day country. For example the Ottoman Empire can be found in the Atlas of Turkey.
