The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth first issued banknotes in 1794 under the authority of Tadeusz Kościuszko, less than one year before Poland was partitioned out of existence (regaining independence in 1918). Higher denomination 500 and 1,000 Zlotych notes were issued but are extremely rare. Images are courtesy of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.
