Hi

We are writing a book on spices and herbs.

The title is “Krydderleksikon med urter og smakstilsetninger” (Encyclopedia of spices and herbs). Print run is 5000 copies and the book will be published in May this year. It will be illustrated with photos of all the plants.

Most of the photos are already provided for but we still miss some picture.

We have found your photo of Skaftafell on the Internet and we wonder if you kindly will let us use the photo in our book.

Lauretanische Litanei

Hallo Xenophon!

I notice you are still contributing to the stained glass galleries. I want to draw your attention to this file, and the other uploads from the same church in Gotland. These windows were, with only two exceptions, dated 1240. Regardless of the source of the information, this is ridiculous. Most of the windows have a date (more or less decipherable but clearly either 1900 or 1960). I eventually eliminated 1960 as a possibility, because they are all the work of a single individual, C. Vilhelm Petterson, who name appears in many of the windows with the date 1900.

Strangely enough, the only two genuine Medieval windows, those on which Petterson had based all the other windows, were the two for which no date had been given.

Perhaps you misunderstood the written source that you cited. However, the first rule of anyone who attempts to catalogue stained glass is to use you eyes. Many 19th and early 20th century windows or very heavily restored windows masquerade as "Medieval". However, almost all modern (ie 18-21st century) windows are dated and signed. Also, don't be fooled by "commemorative" dates. A dedication reading "In Loving Memory of Jeremiah Bloggs 1754-1834", is most unlikely to have been installed in 1834. It might be thirty or more years later. In the 19th century, style is a major indicator of date, as the art of stained glass was "a fashion" and thousands of windows were being installed. Simultaneously, many artists like Petterson, were imitating Medieval windows, particularly for restoration jobs.

Best wishes, Amandajm (talk) 06:27, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I agree that Pettersen has done a good job of restoring those windows of which part remained, and reproducing the style in the others. One of the things that is an indication (if there is not inscription to go by) is that genuine Medieval glass will have multiple breakages, so that long borders will show that several pieces of glass that was one long strip, identifiable by texture and colour, have cracked as the lead subsided or with the pressure of wind, and have been repaired with thin strips of lead, generally much thinner than the main leadlines. Modern (mid to late 20th century) repairs may show thick clumsy joints and strips. Old glass may have "spider-web" shatters that have been carefully repaired rather than replaced, cracks right across faces, and other such. Old repairs tend to retain as much medieval glass as possible, and include salvaged bits that don't quite match. 19th century restorers were much more arrogant and would take out cracked pieces and replace them. Modern conservation standards such as those of ICOMOS have gone a long way towards encouraging the repair of old glass rather than replacement with similar but modern glass. One wonders what was in the windows that Pettersen replaced. Amandajm (talk) 02:44, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Hallo und schönen guten Morgen,

Sollte die Datierung hier nicht eher 1678 sein? --Jwh (talk) 08:24, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

--Jwh (talk) 22:21, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Denkmäler in Österreich

Bitte in Zukunft einfach ausschreiben.

Also richtigerweise sollte es so aussehen Category:Pfarrkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt (Niederwaldkirchen).

--FA2010 (talk) 21:43, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello ! Could you please add the references of this file according to Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum or any other nomenclature ? I'm listing all latin inscriptions according to CIL (Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum) and AE (Année Épigraphique) and later ILS, etc. You can have a look at both categories : Category:Année Épigraphique, Category:Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum.
