Hey, do you happen to know why a bunch of random visa map images that were uploaded like 6 years ago where added to the category? Just checking one image File:Visa requirements for Swedish citizens.png it looks like it was added to your recent philatelic uploads lists five times this year. You might want to look into it. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 14:48, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

  • Yes Adamant1 I have noticed this issue. Sometimes it is very very difficult to find exactly which sub-category is being hoovered up by OgreBot, especially when someone started uploading many images into a category as recently happened with Category:Pony Express. That took me a few days to find and then get it excluded. The offending one can be buried quite deep within a parent category that I actually want to track. If you can find it please let me know as I've searched for this one previously. Ww2censor (talk) 00:11, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks...

For the hint about checking for Renewals, which I am going to do now.

BTW If you really wanted to put the effort in, as we've found no notice or no renewal situations, any chance of grabbing the appropriate Djvu file's for the entire volumes, for later Wikisource use? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:10, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

ShakespeareFan00: Sorry but I have enough other interests and RL stuff to deal with at the moment to add something else to that. I'm a (talk page stalker) on Fæ's talk page as they are no longer active here for the last 2 years and they helped me, so I hate to see their files deleted for no good reason. I presume you use this https://exhibits.stanford.edu/copyrightrenewals to check 1923 - 1963 renewals. Ww2censor (talk) 13:18, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
That, and checking the author names on Wikipedia, Some of the ones I DR'ed are British, so I am not confident about applying no-notice or non-renewal for those. I have given the works authored by Amercian authors a review though ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:32, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Question

Hi. I have a question for you. I want to upload some images of postmarks from discontinued post offices. Apparently there's Category:Former post offices, but the infobox if for a Wikidata item and Wikipedia category that both seem to about buildings of former post offices. The category is also in Category:Buildings by former function. So I think that's what it's about. There is a Wikipedia article for discontinued post offices though. So I was going to create a category based on that since I think it describes the concept better giving that a lot of older post offices weren't buildings specifically dedicated to postal service. Plus, it's just better to have a category based on an actual concept and Wikipedia article. Not just a category. But, I don't want there to be any redundancy either and I feel if I create Category:Discontinued post offices it will just be a duplicate of Category:Former post offices, or at least be taken that way even if it isn't. On the other hand I can't just redirect Category:Former post offices to Category:Discontinued post offices either since it follows the exiting "Buildings by former function" category scheme. So, any opinions about what the best option would be? Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 09:22, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Adamant1: I suspect you are barking up the wrong tree with your thinking. What is wrong with [[:Category:Postmarks]] where most countries are in the sub-categories. Discontinued post office is a US-centric article and I don't see it being expanded. Besides which most other English speaking countries would likely use the term "former" or "closed". If you go down the buildings route you will run into the problem of how to deal with post office locations or building that have been moved but may still be open. For instance Baltinglass has been in at least five different buildings since 1950 but is still open. Basically the postmarks have to do with the postal service and have nothing to do with the building itself. Ww2censor (talk) 22:07, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Your probably right. The problem is that "discontinued" or "dead" post office is the common term for closed post offices regardless of if it's US-centric. But I guess it doesn't really matter either way. So I'll just go with Category:Postmarks of former post offices. Although if I had my way there wouldn't be special categories for "former" places to begin with, let alone post offices, but that's a separate issue. Except to say something like a castle building that's been converted into a museum or whatever is still a castle. So a category like Category:Former castles just seems stupid. Same goes for former post offices. But whatever. Thanks for sharing your opinion about it at least. --Adamant1 (talk) 01:01, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Adamant1: I don't see any point in using a new category Category:Postmarks of former post offices because it makes no real sense. There are several books on postmarks and they only refer to the name of the post office and may give opening and closing dates. I would just go with [[:Category:Postmarks]] and don't complicate the matter. Ww2censor (talk) 18:22, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

The postcard is dated to the year 1921. However, the two identical temple-like buildings (called „Ehrentempel“) were built about 1935, the left one („Führerbau“) only a few years earlier. So I think there is something rotten in the state of Denmark. --Misburg3014 (talk) 13:33, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

The listing is still viewable on the w:Wayback Machine here and looking closely at the postmark on the card I think the year is shown at the bottom of the cancellation as 1937. The 21 appears to be part of the date code. So that might confirm your suggestions. I suspect the correct licence template would be {{PD-Germany-§134-KUG}} but also review Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany before changeing it. Ww2censor (talk) 14:15, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
