Hello, Wimpi!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Canal categories[edit]

Hello. If you wish to add categories by continent or geographic region fine. But do not remove "Category:Canals by country" from categories where that is exactly what it is (eg, as you did [1] or [2]) If the problem is not clear, understand that Panama is not either a country OR in Central America, it is BOTH. Please restore the "Canals by country" to any categories about canals by country from which you have removed them. Thanks. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 16:53, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • But the problem was that there were so many subcategories in 'Canal by country'. By removing the countries to their continents, it's much easier to find it. --Wimpi (talk) 16:59, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yes, there are a lot of subcategories to "Canals by country", because there a lot of countries, and lots of them have canals. You had the idea to create categories for canalas by continent-- good, another way for people to find things. Removing them from "Canals by country" at the same time -- bad idea! It does not make them easier to find-- for anyone looking for a country's canals Category:Canals by country it makes it 100% impossible to find. That's not good, understand now? Also note that if you think a category is not useful, don't just remove it from images while leaving the category where it is empty; instead propose it for deletion at Commons:Categories for discussion. However in my opinion I doubt people will agree to destroy "Category:Canals by country", since making subcategories by country is a very accepted way of organizing things here on Commons. Again, please put back all the "Canals by country" which you have removed. Thanks. Infrogmation (talk) 17:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The whole world is organised on Commons "by country" (More than 4000 categories and growing every day): that is the current standard. Moreover, political/administrative organisations don't map very well on continents: there are several countries that have territories on several continents (up to 6 , check en:List of countries spanning more than one continent. Categorisation by continents are just a side categorisation that should have no impact on the by counrty categorisation. --Foroa (talk) 18:24, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To be precise, we have 59,564 categories organized by country. :) Rocket000 (talk) 08:04, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tributaries[edit]

Bonjour Wimpi. Je vois que tu vides Category:Tributaries of the Meuse River.

Bonne continuation, Jack ma (talk) 16:24, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

just because many images we have are from the Bundesarchiv does not make it correct to make the whole history a subcategory of the Category:Bundesarchiv, nor does it give a reason to unnecessarily split up the Bundesarchiv images 'by subject'. The temporary categorization 'by subject', or by location or by time, was resolved with replacing that temporary categories with appropriate topic categories, categories like the Category:Battle of the Netherlands, a category related to an history topic with a relation to location and time. --Martin H. Category discussion warning

Category:Pier_Christiaanssloot has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Re: English Wikipedia[edit]

Well Wimpi I watched this problem yesterday and yours two are not the only. There're 14 more like this. But don't worry I contacted admins and technical guys. You'll get an answer soon. Thank you.--Pratyya (Hello!) 13:23, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your help! I can't wait to hear from you again. Kind regards, --Wimpi (talk) 17:39, 8 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well Wimpi, due to a bug or problem to the filemoving tool/script some of the renamed file got missing. Developer and technical guys are working on it. Maybe they'll be able to recover those missing files. --Pratyya (Hello!) 13:39, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wimpi, "Leipizig" is a city, as you know, and never was the name of a territory (except of the surrounding district "Landkreis Leipzig").The territory was the (kingdom of) Sachsen/Saxony. Before the arousal to a kingdom it was the Kurfürstentum (koervorstendom) Sachsen.--Ulamm (talk) 12:28, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ulamm, thank you for informing me about this error. I will correct this and, at the same time, give this image a general upgrade. The new version will be ready in 1-2 weeks. ~~ Wimpi (talk) 19:09, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ulamm, I'm pleased to let you know that I have now uploaded the new versions. You will see that there have been some more improvements, than initially planned. I will replace the images on the relevant pages, and ask for the older versions to be fully deleted. Wimpi (talk) 22:24, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
