Hello, Whpq!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Mass deletion request of 5 images

Hello, Whpq. I do not understand why you would mass-nominate five of my images for deletion just because you noticed that I uploaded 'Jersey Journal Secaucus Headquarters.jpg' yesteImage:Foo.jpgrday. Those images have been there for years and have been labelled to be used only in the article to which they are subject of, which falls under fair use. No admin has had a problem with them. One of the images, for example, is from the 1930s and long in the public domain. Now you are forcing me to revisit and defect each upload. Each of those are solely used to visually describe the subject of the articles. If removed, they would leave their corresponding articles plain and without a single visual depiction. - Footballer99 (talk)16:49, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

The images were not mass nominated. They were individually nominated with specific reasoning as to why I believe each has licensing issues. You claim that these images "falls under fair use". Do you understand that Commons does not accept fair use images? It's official policy. See Commons:Fair use. In any case, none of the images are stated to be used under fair use in the licensing, but the licensing statements are not supported with any evidence of the claimed license. If you believe that these images should be kept, you should make the case to keep them at each of the discussions. Regards. -- Whpq (talk) 17:40, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
I must be mixing up the Jersey Journal Headquarters image with the other ones. There is an issue with the Bulgarian Wiki, however, which is the main reason for the misunderstanding. There is no option to upload an image to the local site, sometimes forcing me to upload to Commons. Do you have any idea how I can upload those locally so we can avoid such issues going forward? - Footballer99 (talk) 18:00, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
I am relying on machine translation of the Bulgarian Wikipedia upload link as I do not read Bulgarian. From what I gather in the translation, the Bulgarian Wikipedia no longer accepts non-free images such as movie posters, DVD covers, logos etc. So it appears they have simply directed any uploads to Commons since the type of acceptable licenses on that Wiki is the same as the licensing on Commons. So the short answer, is no, ther eis no way to place those non-free images on the Bulgarian Wikipedia as they are not acceptable content. For actual details, you will need to contact somebody on the Bulgarian Wikipedia. -- Whpq (talk) 20:11, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for that. Strange, but apparently they have disallowed direct uploads. I have gone ahead and made my case for each of the images in question. Will work on the Jersey Journal Headquarters image issue tomorrow. The newspaper's page would be just too plain without it. Thanks again. - Footballer99 (talk) 20:40, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion request

Hi, I noticed you flagged one of my uploaded photos. The one related to the Cambrige journal ("File:Jnle March 2017.jpg") is a photo I have taken by my own mobile phone from the actual journal. It is not a direct copy from the website. I don't see why it is a violation. Omid.espero (talk) 14:43, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

In the file information, you claimed the image was your own work. That is clearly not true. There is no evidence that the image is available under a free license. Copyvios

Hello Whpq, Please do research before copyvio'ing any image - in the case of Lala Pons the video was under a CC licence upon upload and obviously CC licences are irrevocable, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:11, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

@Davey2010: The archive does not seem to behave properly for me. The usual "show more" which expands to show the license does not do anything, but I opened up the html source of the archive and found the CC licensing in there. I've added the archive link to the permission field on image file information. -- Whpq (talk) 20:55, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi, Ah okay fair point - I had that issue too, I originally tried the very first capture but the show more button didn't work for me either so tried another capture, Thank you for updating the link much appreciated! :), Happy editing :), –Davey2010Talk 21:40, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Deleting Photo Nepal first Historic Santali film Bonodal poster

Man, why you keep on delete my uploaded photo again and again I know the rules of copy right policy of wiki, I have permission to use the film poster from production house, its so hard to collect the information and you guys so easily with one enter delete the photo. @whpq: you supposed to see my page I am new on wiki may be I have to learn many think more and I am learning too. If I have done a mistake too, you supposed to send write a message that is called a respect, I know may be you have more experience on wiki. But for the poster I have the permission from Kiran Khatiwada who is the producer, director and from his production house this film was produced he gave me the permission to use it. So where I have fault to use this poster. Can you pls describe me what is the next solution would you give. --Zayakg (talk) 07:52, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Zayakg: When you uploaded the files, you asserted that these were your own work. From your message here, that clearly is not true. When it is somebody else's work, you need to provide proof that the image is under the license you claim. For these images, you will need to have the copyright holder provide proof of permissions / license. See COM:OTRS and find the section labelled "Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?" Follow the instructions for "I have received permission from the original author (not me) to upload the file to Commons." -- Whpq (talk) 13:05, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Whpq: What kind of proof verification you need, can you please tell me in details. If you could say me this before I would follow the procedure and you guys so easily deleted the photo. before talking any steps you guys have to check in properly, not like directly deleted the stuff.--Zayakg (talk) 11:39, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

@Zayakg: Read my previous response. It gives you a link with instrucitonons on what section to read. That section tells you what to do. -- Whpq (talk) 12:05, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

A Question.🤔

Hi Mr Whpq, I hope you're doing fine today. Please I want to ask, if I should download a file I posted on another space e.g Google map and post that same file here on commons, am I still the copy right owner of that image? Remember I was the one that posted that same image in that space and maybe for some reasons, I no longer have that same image on my phone, and I decided to download from maps or the website I posted it so as to post the same image here for a purpose, hope I'm not doing anything wrong by posting that image and by putting my name as the original author? And if I can post that image will I post it as my personal stuff or post it as fair use? Please my questions may not be straight forward, but please try and answer them for me, I'm expecting a response from you soon. Thanks. --Idoghor Melody (talk) 10:34, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Idoghor Melody: You probably should ask your question at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. -- Whpq (talk) 14:08, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
@Whpq: Thanks for your response, but this was a question you could have answered, so why refer me? --Idoghor Melody (talk) 21:18, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Magnifique sabotage !!!

Magnifique sabotage. --Shanon11 (talk) 20:10, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

@Shanon11: Bonjour,
If you do have permission from the copyright holder, you need to follow the instructions at COM:OTRS to confirm licensing. Note that the copyright holder for a photograph is typically the photographer and not the subject of the photo. -- Whpq (talk) 17:11, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
@Whpq: And in this case, it is easier because photographer Aung Kyaw Tun is my friend. Easy Peasy.I will come back with copyright license. Thank you and this time I will try to control my temper.--JosephMartinFa (talk) 17:34, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

ஆனந்த் ராம்

It's is a duplicate of my image used in the website that was mentioned by you ஆனந்த் ராம் (talk) 14:32, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
What do you mean when you say "my image"? Are you claiming to be the copyright holder? The source for your uploaded image is a Flickr account with no indication that they are the rights holder for the image. The image itself appears to be a publicity photo in widespread use and predates the upload to the Flickr account. -- Whpq (talk) 17:01, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I object to the deletion of File:Silat Barnstar.png because the file is my own creation. What should I do so that the file is not deleted? 111.94.69.166 14:17, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Sorry if I just messaged you using IP. What should I do so that the file is not deleted? Badak Jawa (talk) 14:19, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

You have incorporated a photograph in the barnstar without providing a source for that photo to show that it is freely licensed. -- Whpq (talk) 14:21, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

How can I fix? Badak Jawa (talk) 14:29, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

I got the Silat image from Canva Badak Jawa (talk) 14:32, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

You need to provide the actual source, as in a URL to the actual image used that shows it is under a free license, and provide any necessary attribution as required by the license. -- Whpq (talk) 14:36, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

I'm using the Silat image from https://www.freepik.com/premium-photo/two-men-wearing-pencak-silat-uniforms-fight-white_11707245.htm which has been published on Canva Badak Jawa (talk) 14:55, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

That links to Freepik. Their license restricts the inclusion of the image or any of its derivatives in a database or collection. Commons is a collection of images, so you may not use that image. It is not under a compatible free license. -- Whpq (talk) 15:03, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Done, what's next? Badak Jawa (talk) 15:00, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

What license is compatible for the image to work with? Badak Jawa (talk) 15:14, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

You can use any image that meets Commons:Licensing. The page includes a list of popular licenses. The image you currently are using does not meet the licensing requirement. -- Whpq (talk) 15:42, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Congratulations, dear license reviewer

If you use the helper gadget, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Whpq, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can enable the LicenseReview gadget from Preferences.

Important: You should not review your own uploads, nor those of anyone closely related to you!

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. You can also add User license reviewer to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! Killarnee (talk) 15:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Thanks! -- Whpq (talk) 15:25, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Hey Whpq, I was hoping you could review this file for me. I am using it on a featured list candidate on enwiki. See Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Music Bank Chart winners (2018)/archive1. Thanks. EN-Jungwon 13:47, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

The licensing is a bit odd (see file talk page), but it looks okay so I have reviewed it and accepted it as a valid license. -- Whpq (talk) 14:07, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

User:Calonmenisback reuploading deleted logos again

Hi it seems that Calonmenisback is reuploading Philippine gov't logos again as their own work. Do note that their other uploads of places might be legitimate though. I've noticed that you've batch nominated his images before--Lenticel (talk) 05:41, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

You can do what Minorax did and tag with no permission. -- Whpq (talk) 12:14, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
