Pie charts[edit]

Hallo Vahurzpu! Charts by language is a very gut idea. My experience shows, that it would be better to write first pie charts in the Category and then the name of the country. Main reason: when you look for pie charts and try to use the search field, it will show you automatically pie charts only when the word is on the beginning. So, it would be better do name the category "Pie charts language neutral" or something like this with "Pie charts.." at the beginning instead of "Language neutral pie charts". This is of course no obligation, only an idea :-) Yomomo (talk) 01:16, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Yomomo: That's a good point; I hadn't considered that when I created the category; I named it mirroring Category:Language-neutral charts. The word order "Pie charts language neutral" sounds a bit weird to me as a native English speaker, but if I can think of a natural-sounding category name that starts with "Pie charts" I'll move it. Thank you for information, they are not only one's who are doing like this. There are some without source, but also many where is just Wikimedia commons as source. I already email to author about license violation. Will see how is reacting. Thanks again ----László (talk) 12:48, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Map warper is impressive[edit]

your work on File:Canton1860.jpg was impressive! i was just fidgeting with google maps to try to find out a location. only when i gave up did i see the file history. XD

there's a problem, though. i was trying to geolocate french folly, the red dot outside southeastern corner of the city. as you can see, on the old map that's the intersection of one vertical stream and another horizontal. their positions dont match with the osm map. i'm not sure which problems cause this: is the osm map affected by the shift of china coord data? is the old map not accurate? or is the map warping not accurate? RZuo (talk) 20:40, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@RZuo: The main issue with that map is that my warping was a bit speculative. I did the warping because I was trying to locate something within the city proper (I think a customs post). However, there aren't a lot of good landmarks I could find, especially because I don't understand Chinese and therefore had to rely on other cues to find corresponding points. I originally expected I could use geographic features like coastlines, but those have shifted considerably in the last 150 years. I only found four control points I was reasonably confident in: some points on the island in the southeast corner of the map, and I believe a school and museum that are sufficiently old to identify on both.
The most plausible answer to your question, therefore, is that the map warping is imprecise. If you know Chinese, you might be able to find some additional control points (you can log into the warper with a Commons account and edit them). It's also possible the old map is off, but I wouldn't assume that right off the bat. I think the Chinese coordinate issues are the least likely issue. In theory OSM should be using true coordinates, and cross-referencing it with aerial imagery makes it seem like the offset is small if present. Vahurzpu (talk) 21:29, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thx a lot for teaching me! many buildings have vanished or been rebuilt. what i can think of and find in the map right now are 花塔 ("large pagoda" in the map), 光塔 (smooth pagoda). there're a couple more temples that might be useful like 仁威廟. 兩廣部堂 is where the cathedral is now. these are rather tiny and point like landmarks, so i guess these would be better control points than roads, which have been expanded or altered too much. i was surprised to see some bridges (near french folly), because the current ones i have walked over countless times had been there in 1860. 😮😭 but those bridges have been rebuilt, and they were not, i guess, such important landmarks as the pagoda, so their locations on the map may or may not be so accurate.
i'll try my hands on warping later when i have time. RZuo (talk) 08:42, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
forgive me for writing so much on your talk page.
i just want to say i'm impressed by the american's ability to draw such an accurate map with impressive details of the streets and their names. this was back in 1850s when chinese just fought wars with british and the local govt was probably quite hostile to foreigners. i cant imagine how the guy went around the city with some measurement equipment. this map is so good that it has more details than many chinese drawn maps nearly a century later in 1930s. File:Canton Map 1948.jpg is another one with high precision hopefully. :) RZuo (talk) 13:50, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
