Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hi Tremonist, thanks for appreciating and supporting my candidate (first version). I don't really understand what you mean by "leaning backwards"" since I took the picture obviously from below. IMO the only way to make it stand up is a vertical perspective correction or am I too naive? Cheers?

Thanks for writing! Of course you took the picture from below, therefore the front of the building appears to be leaning backward (what actually the photographer, you here, needed to do in order to take the photo), that's what I meant. It just doesn't appear streight, a perspective correction would change this, thus a corrected version would be preferrable. We absolutely agree, it seems. Looking for advice on improving the quality of my photographs[edit]

Tremonist,

Thanks for voting in a recent Feature Picture nomination of one of my photographs. This was the first time one of my photos has ever been nominated for FP status, which is quite exciting for me, although I agree with your assessment that this image is not worthy of said status. However, now that I have been slowly improving as an amateur photographer over the past few years and I am the proud owner of a Sony ILCE-5100 mirrorless camera, I think I have a good opportunity to work toward FP-quality photographs in the future.

If you don't mind me asking, what simple (or not so simple) tips might you have for a photographer like myself? What improvements can I make when I'm actually capturing photos? Or maybe is there a default setting with my camera that I should change? (I haven't changed any of the defaults, at least not intentionally.)

Any and all guidance you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for writing, feedback is always appreciated! I had a look at the respective discussions going on on your user page and I agree very much with what the colleagues have written there. Their advise is good and really helpful, I think. It's not easy to answer such a question all at once, as there's sooo much to consider taking great photos.

For your wonderful hobby I wish you best of luck and much fun! Be confident and -- sooner or later -- your pictures could be among those that are successful in the contest.

Thank you for writing! I think I understand what you are talking about, but I am not sure whether this is according to the regulations. Can a nomination page like this be deleted at all? I thought the nomination could only be ended and the page would then be moved to the archives. Therefore I'd like to learn a sysop's opinion on this. All right?
