Voting problems in other systems

I heard via radio news about the voting irregularities in that first election that put GWBush into office. The older population in Florida had gotten confused by the ballots -- many votes were cast for GWB that were intended for George Buchanon. Then later, during the recounts, the winning office recounted the votes in a way that would allow them to win that recount -- meaning that an inconsistent recount was used and abused by the winning party while the losing party was at least consistent with their methods.

My mom, who has been involved in state politics for much of the late 1900's, she had a young hacker in her 'arena' for a few conversational hours. She asked this youngster if he thought that the current governor of the state he lived in had the charisma needed to be a great governor. I suspect that she listened only to the people who were selling the voting equipment and did not get information about any equipment or software from either a competitive software seller or from an impartial software group (which this youngster would have actually had enough experience to talk about than surmising a leaders charisma). Responsibility has become a 'look and feel' instead of an actual state of being.

I don't know if this helps when reviewing voting for images here. I wouldn't mind if it helped people to rethink the way they do things. -- carol 12:05, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Further, I don't think that anyone who voted for this war should be running for that office now. -- carol 12:06, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Discussion of purpose for doing things

I am interested to know what others think they might be accomplishing by editing discussions and the history of them here.

Is it a game where some sell their good wiki name and evidence of this needs to be erased? Perhaps it is just a bunch of bored wealthy housewives who don't have any real skills to make their days interesting? My view and insight of this is very limited. Perhaps it is to discourage honesty? -- carol 08:13, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tony- From the deletion discussion we had a few months back, I thought you might be interested to know that a bot came by and tagged the above image with {{Bad name}}, which looks to be the right solution. Apparently that generates a copy with the new name and nominates the original for speedy deletion simultaneously. Do you think the bot is reacting to your {{Rename}} and just now getting around to it? I'm still not up to speed on how all this works. --Eric my en.wp talk page 19:37, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I have used one of your flower QI in the poster above. With your permission, I intend to nominate the picture in COM:FPC. Cheers, Alvesgaspar 23:48, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Senecio minimus -- I looked it up because I was curious. ITIS said it is a synonym for Erechtites minima google images for Erechtites minima

It looks like the leaves are too big.... -- carol 08:59, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

That's why we have caterpillas - too chew those pesky big leaves down to size ;-) [1] --Tony Wills 10:37, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Heh. There is one paper from New Zealand that says that the Magpie eats Senecio and it seems that everything else that says it is also from New Zealand and seems to quote the paper strongly even if it is not cited. None of that is a problem except for that the moth eats berry leaves which don't contain the toxic stuff. In Europe, there seems to be one paper that says what they eat and everything else quotes that -- but I didn't find the paper to know for sure. But when they all have the same wording and list of foods.... I know about that 'slight rewording' of papers -- I do it as well; it feels good to cite the paper that I take the words from though.
Anyways, two things. Sorry that I doubted you and it isn't just you! -- carol 12:43, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Oh yee of little faith ;-), well I don't really know what plant it is, but I asked a local botanist and that's what she identified it as, I even have it in writing [2] (although not signed :-) --Tony Wills 20:31, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Heh. My faith is that people are the same everywhere and everywhen -- mostly. -- carol 23:17, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
This identification is of course original research and would be banned on wikipedia ;-) --Tony Wills 23:48, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
en:List of Lepidoptera that feed on Senecio which could probably stand some images.... -- carol 06:33, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
All those list pages (that I looked at), except en:Larval food plants of Lepidoptera are just lists, without images, so you'd be creating a new standard :-)
I have taken many, many, many images of those caterpillars but find it really difficult to get a QI of them because of their dark colour. I want to show the dark bumps that the hairs grow out of, the face, the feet, all with a good depth of field. (a few of my efforts can be found here) --Tony Wills 10:01, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

{{tab reset}} I saw many of those already and I really liked your white plume moth when it went through QIC -- eh, Sans Sillyart said the rearend was too fuzzy(?).... The bugs on the Senecios are very interesting to me as I have been working on those articles. It is a funny little plant -- I have been surprised at how interesting it has turned out to be. I found a book from 1905 that tells how it followed the railways in New Zealand. Right now, I am reading about how the Canadian bacteriologists were unable to consider that it was poisoning that was infecting cattle in Nova Scotia -- even after the locals had had success turning deadly farms good again by removing the plant. It is funnier stuff than I would have ever expected. I am not putting it online until I am able to work the parts about it being the only available food into it though because scare tactics have also been at play with this stuff.

I wonder what reason lists don't have images with them. I suspect that a lot of the species pages that I look at were autogenerated or semi-autogenerated; I am curious if that is would be the reason for lists to not have images associated with them. It really would take a thoughtful human hand to add them. -- carol 10:32, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes the ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) apparently causes liver damage, cattle don't normally eat it (distasteful) but don't notice it when fed in hay, it is apparently illegal to sell hay in NZ containing it or its seeds. But like many 'noxious weeds' in NZ it is a problem to farmers, not the rest of humanity, personally I consider cows and sheep as 'noxious' introductions to our fauna anyway ;-) --Tony Wills 10:57, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

QI image size

Hi Tony Wills. Thanks for your QI management and usually effort.

Pointless quibble about a guideline, there is no minimum size, just review it : Well, there is nothing exactly borderline for images size? I tried make a Japanese-page, and if so that, I would like add those stuff to guidelines-ja.. Thanks :) _Fukutaro 10:11, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Vanhankaupunginlahti

Hello Tony,

Sorry that it took so long to get back to you, but do to other commitments I have been rather passive on Wikis for a while. Anyhow, see my talk page, I wrote a bit lengthier answer for your enquiry about Vanhankaupunginlahti. I hope that you find it interesting. --Thermos 06:04, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello again Tony,
Due to your input, I decided to create an article about the area. Please see en:Vanhankaupunginlahti. I hope that you find it interesting. --Thermos 17:36, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Heh, welcome back! Technically, I don't know if this is appropriate. In my mind and in my real experience, these templates are used to discourage people and I do not want to have much to do with them ;) -- carol 09:23, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Image:Blackbird (male).jpg

Hello,

I just wanted to let you know I used your photo Image:Blackbird (male).jpg as the basis to draw the heraldic charge merle or blackbird in the coat of arms Image:Armoiries de Wachenheim.svg. I hope that is okay by you.--Caranorn (talk) 14:22, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
