Hello, Tiptoety!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Could you please help me?

Hi Tiptoety,

I'm working on the "Laszlo Marton" page, you might remember me. :)

Could you please help me out?

I'm in the middle of the process of asking permissions from the authors of the photos I uploaded. I got permission of 3 of them so far. But it is not the statndard format, just their own words: For exaple:

I, Guntar Kravis, the legitimate copyright holder approve that Virag Csikos can upload the photos (1. “Platonov.Soulpepper.jpg”, 2. Platonov.2.Soulpepper.jpg, 3. Vanya.soulpepper.jpg, 4. TheWildDuck4.JPG ) and I agree to give them freely for free use to wikimedia-commons.

Guntar Kravis

Toronto, ON

M6J 2V2

mobile: 647 883 4252

Is this ok? I e-mailed this to permissions (with a link to the photos).

The license is Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0.

But when I showed the standard permission format to one of the authors, he had concerns, asking the following:

"Is that standard to allow anyone to use the work for commercial purposes? It seems like I would be signing these pictures away forever to whomever for whatever purpose. It seems a bit extreme? I thought we were just talking about Wikipedia, for people to look at."

So what do you think would be the best licence for this? What should I tell him?

Thank you so much! Dvornicsek (talk) 01:36, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In order for those images to be hosted here, the author must release them using one of the Creative Commons licenses, and yes the author must use the standard permission format you are referring to. Tiptoety talk 02:04, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image licencing

Still trying to figure out licencing for one set of photos I'd like to use, because of the comcerns of the author.

I foun this : The permission for use of this work has been verified and archived in the Wikimedia OTRS system. It is available as ticket #2009041810025185 for users with an OTRS account. To confirm the permission, please contact someone with an OTRS account or leave a note at the OTRS noticeboard. (from page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Patrickdemarchelieralyssapallett.jpg)

What does this mean? It seems to protect the author's work. Thank you: Dvornicsek (talk) 12:56, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personality-Box

Hello Tiptoety,

you added a personality-tag to a photograph I uploaded yesterday (KathrinSchmidt.JPG). It shows an author which is famous enough to have a Wikipedia-article. She was sitting on stage at a public festival (in a park), with an audience of at least 1000 people waiting for her to read from her books. From my point of view, german regulations on personality rights are not violated. Do you still see problems? --Don Manfredo (talk) 08:39, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The template does not mean there is anything wrong with your image, its purpose is simply to warn re-users of Commons’ content that local laws may impose additional requirements on re-use, over and above those that we enforce here. Please see COM:IDENT for more information. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 17:49, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, seems I misunderstood it. Would you recommend to add such a warning to any picture description, if the picture shows a living person? Don Manfredo (talk) 19:09, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would recommend that with two exceptions. The guidelines do not apply to obvious self-portraits. They also do not apply to photographs where the subject is unidentifiable. Hope that helps. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 19:49, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Tiptoety, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions at all! You know how to reach me. Best wishes ++Lar: t/c 01:26, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

You granted this user Rollback here on Commons but this user isn't active here for a month and dont even have 150 contributions, do you have special reasons why you trust him because I rather think its pretty fast to give a user with only 114 contributions (globally) en just registered for 20 days Rollback. Could you please reconsider this rollback?

Best regards, Huib talk 04:26, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw nothing wrong with the edits he had made, as well as the fact that he is an OTRS member. After reading Commons:Rollback, granting him the right seemed fine. Feel free to reverse my action. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:34, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate

Hi, I now replaced all usage of File:Spiral Galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163.jpg, so it can be deleted. I am asking you because you just deleted some duplicates. And I noticed that this page is semiprotected. Because an administrator often deals with edits by IP-numbers, they might want to get in touch with you. I do not think it is a good idea to prevent them from doing that. Regards, /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:07, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion has been ✓ Done. As for the protection, it was originally added by another administrator after a number of IPs added harassing content (which have now been oversighted). Either way, I will give unprotection a try. Tiptoety talk 07:12, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr reviewing

Hey Tip, I found that Ipodnano05 (talk · contribs) had been uploading a lot of Flickr images that had incompatible licenses. They uploaded many, but as I got to the older ones (they were all from a few days ago up till today), you had passed them on Flickr review, but when I followed the link, the license was incompatible. At first I thought maybe the Flickr user just changed them in the days between when you reviewed and when I just saw, but after looking at that Flickr user's photostream, I don't see any freely licensed images... Do you think you could've made a mistake on all those? I won't delete the ones you've reviewed, but the ones that haven't been reviewed yet I'm going to delete. Killiondude (talk) 05:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. It seems that as I was going through them, a bot had been okaying the Flickr status as well, so it doesn't seem to be an error on your part. The Flickr user must have went through and changed all their licenses, and Ipodnano05 must not have noticed. Killiondude (talk) 05:57, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okey dokey. :-) Tiptoety talk 23:09, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion

Dear User, the photographer authorized the use of appropriate picture on the anniversary of Santana. I wonder what are the criteria for elimination, because I have documented the messages that the photographer sent me.

I did not put the photos without the permission of the author! It's not how I am horrified at such a demonstration of vandalism. If you knew how long it took to get permission for such photos.--Pedu0303 (talk) 20:09, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need to worry, if I made a mistake it can easily be corrected. That said, can you please provide me with a link the the image that I deleted and we will go from there. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 00:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about your changes

Hi, I resently created a simple commons page, La Belle Epoque. I was just wondering why you changed the format to one with much smaller images and why you deleted the picture "La Belle Epoque Arial.jpg" from the page as this is my favourite of the lot. The pages "Anjodi" and "Scottish Highlander" have had no such changes made even though they are of an identical format to the way this page originally was and have been up on commons for much longer. Thanks

Hello. First let me apologize for removing one of the images, it was not my intent and was a mistake on my part. As such, I added it back to the gallery. As for the format, my changes were in compliance with Commons:Galleries which states that <gallery></gallery> is be to used on gallery pages (like the one you created).
Let me know if you have anymore questions,

After my substantial discussion with Ionas off-wiki, I have concluded that he does in fact merit being unblocked. The fact that he made full disclosure of his earlier identity speaks volumes about his good intentions, as does the fact that -- aside from his recent scuffle with Shankbone -- he has been well-behaved. Moreover, his extreme youth at the time of his earlier identity adds plausibility to his claims of having changed and matured since then.

He has promised to avoid revert-warring, and he has promised to avoid anything and everything to do with Shankbone (unless Shankbone leaves a message on his talk page). DragonflySixtyseven (talk) 01:16, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a bug in the script you used to delete the categories. It looks like it deleted categories that weren't tagged with Speedy. Once in a while I come categories like Category:N512FX (now moved to Category:N512FX (aircraft)). These weren't moved, supposedly because they weren't in (Category:Aircraft by registration). -- User:Docu at 19:37, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

H1N1 duplicates

Please take more care when deleting images as duplicates as you did with File:H1N1 map-2009-04-29WN.svg and with a number of similar images. As is explained in the image description, the images are needed for articles on Wikinews since images in a news story shouldn't be updated with information after the news story was published. It is also worth nothing that use of Check Usage would have showed up pages using these images so it was premature to delete them even if the replacement was appropriate. I do appreciate however that the toolserver has been having problems lately which may impact on the Check Usage tool. Adambro (talk) 10:50, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. Alright. Sorry about that. The CheckUsage tool was in fact down, and I assumed that because the commons delinker bot stated it had been universally replaced, it had been universally replaced. But, I guess your reasoning is sound in regards to the Wikinews articles. I do not edit there, and never thought about it that way before. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 16:54, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of the slovak republic

Hi,

it was not a good idea to delete File:Flag of First Slovak Republic 1939-1945.svg; it was actually used on dozens of pages and should definitely be restored. I just reuploaded a png version, but I don't know how to create an svg version. I tried a redirect but it doesn't seem to work this way. Thanks. JJ Georges (talk) 12:40, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The reason it was deleted was because Permjak (talk · contribs) appeared to have uploaded a new version, making the the image nonexistent. It was deleted because the file page had no media what so ever. I can restore it, but the image will not be there. Tiptoety talk 16:57, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did get your email but did not see any points that warranted a reply. The next step would be to wait for someone to evaluate the consensus (which it looks like that is going to be me). Between my real life activities and wiki commitments I simply have not yet had the time to read over the discussion and determine if consensus is there, and what it is. I am thinking that restructuring the conversation a bit, and more or less voting might be the way this needs to go. But we will see. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 16:00, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A few hints

Hello II...Richard...II. I hope you are doing well.

I have noticed that you have attempted to nominate a number of media pages for deletion. In doing so you made a simple mistake. You need to make sure to include the prefix "file" when creating the pages, and adding the delete template to the image. A good example is Commons:Deletion requests/Spirou-et-Fantasio.png (which has been deleted). What it needs to be is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Spirou-et-Fantasio.png (notice the File prefix). Also, I noticed that you added a deletion template here requesting a rename. That is not the proper way to go about requesting a rename. Instead please follow the directions are COM:CHU.

Let me know if you have any questions, Tiptoety talk 05:49, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The way to do all this is really a pitie... for a non english native speaker, it's a crap...

Well I didn't ping you so you could go give Foroa the 3rd degree :).... I think he gets the point and all will be well going forward. Mostly I just wanted you to know. Remember COM:MELLOW :) ++Lar: t/c 23:10, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I came across harsh. That was not my intention, I was just trying to be direct. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 23:12, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up on the (frivolous) check-user. Geo Swan (talk) 18:02, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I replied. Thanks for the heads up. Tiptoety talk 08:35, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Could you please see this? Thanks. --Jyothis (talk) 19:15, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the version in question. Thanks. Tiptoety talk 23:08, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But I can still access the picture here. User has complained with this url. Is there a way to delete that as well? --Jyothis (talk) 01:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hm...I actually have no idea why that is still visible. I asked around and no one was able to come up with a good answer either. I am thinking that the only way to permanently remove the image would be to delete the file in its entirety and re-upload only the good version, but that is just a guess. Tiptoety talk 04:17, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Will it be possible to have someone with server access to go and delete it directly? --Jyothis (talk) 12:31, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please see the last mail on the ticket? user has agreed to re-upload, if we delete it. Please help. --Jyothis (talk) 14:37, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like it is fixed now. no need to delete. Thanks for all your help. --Jyothis (talk) 17:26, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

May I please ask for your advice?

Hi Tiptoety, I'd like to ask you two questions, please:

 1. Because Estrilda has now admitted that she opposed my images not because the images were bad, but because she "kicked back" for her husband, do you believe it will be OK, if her votes will be removed from three of my nominations, in which they made a difference between promoting and not promoting of the image? I am sure it was not her, it was Lycaon's sock account, but it is a different story.
 2. Now, when she repeated one more time that Lycaon was harassed by me, would it be an appropriate thing to insist they provide my edits, in which I harassed Lycaon. I am not saying I am right, but I have to know at last, if for nothing else at least do not repeat the same mistakes in the feature.
Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 22:01, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hi

Hi, I see here that you have approved or disapproved a long list of users. Well done. Is there anything I can do to resove the current status of my application? Has it confused the request by asking an extra question? If so then please ignore it. thx Victuallers (talk) 19:38, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done - Tiptoety talk 01:41, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for confirming the images requested via OTRS. Keep up the good work! -Caspian blue 12:45, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

help with wikistalking on Commons

I know this is kind of outside your purview, but you are more familiar with Commons and with admin stuff than I am. Please take a look at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Jarekt . User:Jarekt is wikistalking me, and undid the last 17 of my edits, most of which are Scouting and unrelated to this user. This is retaliatory on this user's part, for a disagreement on whether naming is descriptive enough. I really want to take it to the admins, but I don't know what the process is. Please suggest what I can do. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 03:27, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to butt in, but Kintetsubuffalo, since I'm familiar with Commons policies and you falsely accuses of the editor in good standing, so I give my input on that. Jarekt's primary activities are on Commons, so he is much more familiar with Commons policies than you according to his edit summary. I think your accusation is not only uncalled but also misunderstanding of how Commons works because you're the one against the renaming policy and consensus. Your rename requests were already rejected by "an admin" on Commons who usually takes renaming of files. The admin is very stick to the naming policy, so you should've discussed with him just like I did. I also agree with their opinion on the naming. Wikistaling does not apply to "one case of patrolling" occurred within 30 minutes by the "patroller". Whenever your edits are contested, you tend to too easily vilify your opponents with hostility just like this case and many other occasions on English Wikipedia that I've observed. So please don't do this. If you think that the matter should be reviewed by uninvolved admins or editors, you can bring the matter to Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems but I'm sure you will get similar responses as this.--Caspian blue 04:38, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am not exactly sure what this dispute is over as you did not provide me with any diffs. But judging from Caspian this is an ongoing issue in which an administrator has already been involved. If you want to provide me with some background and some diffs I can take a look, but the proper venue is the admin's noticeboard that Caspian linked to above. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:48, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Three editors including admin User:Martin H. reverted Kintetsubuffalo's renaming request. (e.g. File:Dubaierrors1964.jpg)[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] So in the situation, Kintetsubuffalo is likely to be accused of editing disruptively and disregards to the consensus and naming policy if he reports Jarekt to admin. And to prevent any unpleasant complaints for this presentation, I already visited this place yesterday. (see the above thread).--Caspian blue 04:57, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Caspian.
Kintetsubuffalo: Just from looking at the page history it is apparent you are revert warring and as such could be blocked. Because of this, I encourage you to stop as it appears consensus supports the file being left the way it is. Now, in regards to this revert, is there a back story here? Do you two have a history that would make you make such an accusation? Tiptoety talk 05:05, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have no history with the user. Other editors I have had issues with have been resolved to the best of my ability. Jarekt has no history with the bulk of the images he/she reverted, and I do. Going after my contributions list and undoing everything is wikistalking, and I openly accuse him/her of bad faith. If it was five or six, okay, but 17? Come on, that's not reasonable. I can leave the Dubai one alone, but the rest seem retaliatory and I object to the methodology. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 13:29, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My side of the story can be found at User_talk:Kintetsubuffalo#File_renaming. I am not going to touch those files again and someone else should evaluate if the renames meet Commons policy. --Jarekt (talk) 14:12, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
