Hello, ThunderSkunk!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)[edit]

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Thanks, and happy editing!

File:Beta-Nitrostyrene's Chemical Structure.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi ThunderSkunk. Please read the page above. It will help you to create correct vector images of chemical structures. All the SVG files you have uploaded so far are just wrappers of pixel images and will thus eventually deleted. --Leyo 22:14, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest I don't understand the technology. I thought just importing the images into Inkscape and saving it as an .SVG gave the benefits people were after. Guess I was wrong... Should I be using something like FileFormat.info or SVGConv instead?

Images that are vector can be rendered at any resolution, so an original SVG can become any size PNG. But a raster, such as PNG, can only be scaled as a bitmap (simple fraction reductions look fine, but other reductions might not and enlargements look progressively more jagged). Uploading high-quality PNG is fine if that's what your originals are...the MOS that Leyo linked discusses the various diagram standards. DMacks (talk) 22:44, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Another goal of the MOS is consistency, so that images don't have details that look like carelessness, mistakes, or confusion (especially to non-chemists who don't know what details "matter" vs what are just arbitrary choices of diagram style). For example, File:Partial hydrogenation of a nitrostyrene to an alkene hydroxylamine.svg uses different fonts and types of subscripts in different parts of the same diagram. Updated this file to be a true .svg file type. On a side note, why the heck does the text in my browser (firefox) for these images reformat itself so wildly from my editors (Inksscape of Adobe Illustrator CS6)?

The factual accuracy of the chemical structure File:Electrolytic Amine Reduction.jpg is disputed[edit]

Dispute notification The chemical structure File:Electrolytic Amine Reduction.jpg you uploaded has been tagged as disputed and is now listed in Category:Disputed chemical diagrams. Files in this category are deleted after one month if there is no upload of a corrected version and if there is no objection from the uploader or other users. Please discuss on the file talk page if you feel that the dispute is inappropriate. If you agree with the dispute, you can either upload a corrected version or simply allow the file to be deleted.

In all cases, please do not take the dispute personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! --Leyo 12:56, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PS. The same criticism applies to File:AdiponitrileSynthesis.png. --Leyo 12:56, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the formula of ammonium sulfate in File:Electrolytic Amine Reduction.jpg is factually incorrect. DMacks (talk) 02:59, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see the mistakes I made now. I drew a new file in .svg format to fix the error. ...File:Electrosynthetic reduction of a nitrile.svg
