Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Thorguds!

I added a photo of the Hashtnagar Pedestal on the Kharosthi page, can anyone please help to program this Wikipedia page so that all photos fits into the section-frames.

Hello, Thorguds!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

It seems like I cannot figure out how to categorize the pictures properly. I would pleased if someone could help help me out.

File:Northern_Norway_or_Sweden_Nomad_sami_late_1800s.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

After comparing this photo with other photos of Sami nomads, one can suggest that this photo is most likely taken by the photographer with the Roland Bonaparte expedition in 1884. Bonaparte photographed the Sami people in the same areas as this group, a group that migrated with their herds between Sweden (winter) and Norway (summers). However, because this information is not given on this photography I can not refer to Bonaparte as a source. The photography is likely from the late 1800's, judged from their clothing. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Den tidligste kjente avbildning av Guden Zevs. 9-8. århundre før vanlig tidsregning BCE..tif, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. I am waiting for a response from Aeleftherios, because he is the one that added this photo as a public photo. It seems to me that Aeleftherios took this photo at August 10th 2010, and that he has answered Author unknown as an answer to whom originally made the Bronze Shield of Zeus. Wikipedia should have asked: Who took the photo? Thorguds (talk) 15:11, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment: User Aeleftherios left WikiCommons in November 2010 as his last contribution was made here in that month. He is unlikely to respond to your message. Regarding the original image of the bronze shield that Aeleftherios uploaded in 2010, Admin Lymantria has resolved the problem and added the original license for it after I discussed it with him here Apparently user g.dallorto accidentally removed the license that Aeleftherios gave for the bronze shield image while adding a category for it on June 1, 2012. This is the History of the image file/photo. If you have any problems, you should speak to Admin Lymantria on his talkpage. He is in your timezone in the Netherlands. --Leoboudv (talk) 07:22, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sami people[edit]

Hej!

The general rule is always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those."). Jag vill därför be dig att inte lägga in Category:Sami people på nytt.--Skogsfrun (talk) 16:04, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Skogsfrun. Please respect that other people have their opinion in how these photos of Sami people and culture should be categorized. I have bought and shared these photos in Wikimedia Commons and want the photos added by Thorguds to be in a wider category. It is ok if you additionally add them to narrower categories because some people think like that, but do not remove my photos from the wider categories. It is much more complicated to use Wikimedia Commons when photos are over-categorized. The Sami people belongs to the Nordic areas since ancient times (before national borders) and are not easily categorized to the particular national states Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia. Also you have made some errors by categorizing Sami people living in Norway to the category of Sweden and some people who are identifiable by names in national museums in Sweden and in Norway to unidentifiable persons. When categories are fuzzy they should be left in wider categories instead of in specified erroneous. Thorguds(talk) 10:11, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
