Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/08/Category:2012 Summer Olympics athletes by country[edit]

Hi, I eventually closed this CFD. However, the sub-categories in Category:Olympic athletes by country should be checked one by one - I leave to you the pleasure to do so ;) Consider that I still have to move Category:Olympic athletes by year, to maintain a coherence. --Ruthven (msg) 12:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Ruthven - you've been a great help here! Much appreciated. - Themightyquill (talk) 10:02, 13 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Old category discussions[edit]

Hello there! I noticed that we are the only ones that dedicate some time old discussions about categories renaming. I was wondering if we can reduce a little the backlog together, because I think that having coherent categories helps the work of users with images. As you are more experienced with the matter, you can point me where there are several moves to do (like in the athletics case), and I can write easily the commands for the Steisplitterbot. For instance, I have ready the commands for Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/11/Category:Books from Russia by year, but I cannot perform the closure myself, as it's a CoI (even if there is consent). I got surprised to see that there are so many stale cases still open! Cheers, Ruthven (msg) 11:37, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ruthven. There are are few others working on the backlock, but your use of the commands would be a tremendous help. I'll tag you on a few discussions where you might be of help, and I'll take a look at Books of Russia by year. There are some old discussions that I'm kind of alright with leaving open because they represent broader unresolved discussions for commons categorization. See Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/05/Category:Geography of Kurdistan, Commons:Categories for discussion/2011/10/Category:Cathedrals in Portugal, Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/12/Category:Jim Turilli, Category:Female writers from the United States, Category:Ginkgo biloba by country, Commons:Categories for discussion/2013/12/Category:Irish Americans among others. I'm not sure if we have a wide enough consensus to make the proposed moves at Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/12/Category:Towers by height & Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/09/Category:High-rises but when the time comes your help would surely be useful. Thanks again. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:24, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

King[edit]

Hi. This file (File:King Prawn Salad (with Potatoes and Green Beans).JPG) that you just edited; I gather "king prawns" should be something like "jumbo" (big) prawns (ref. king crab) or not? They don't even look like "prince" prawns. If you have the bottons, why not rename the file? Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 09:03, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Now that you mention it, I've never heard the term "king prawn" before, but it's mentioned on the English wikipedia article, so I guess it must be common someplaces. If it's not actually wrong I shouldn't rename it. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:08, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Plaques templates[edit]

Did you notice the proposal discussed at Commons:Village pump/Proposals? --Achim (talk) 20:53, 20 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you wrote a response in the discussion mentioned, that seemed to me like you support the proposal. However, you did not vote in the voting subsection above the discussion. Was your statement meant to be a vote in support of the proposal, or just a comment? Elisfkc (talk) 16:04, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Elisfkc: I support the proposal, but it's a half measure. What we really need is a stated principle of categorization that we can rely on to avoid this kind of thing in the future. - Themightyquill (talk) 21:12, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

By the book[edit]

Here you wanted to delete some categories you «appreciate» because they were empty and The Rules say that empty cats must be deleted. However, between the time when you started the deletion process and the time when you closed the discussion those cats become non empty, and therefore this deletion was done against the rules. I expect someone of your inclination to have things done by the book to waste everybody’s time now to go and scrutinize your actions: Coaxing admins into deleting non-empty categories (emptied only after you removed categorization from the newly added file), and closing a CfD discussion as a non-admin. Meanwhile I’ll be working to create and categorize Commons’ content — I was told this is appreciated. -- Tuválkin 13:34, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You yourself agreed in the CFD that the categories could be deleted, and one image does not justify the existence of 6 categories. I certainly don't need to be an admin to close a CfD discussion, and the suggestion has never been raised in the hundreds of CFDs I've closed in the past. If you disagree with my actions, you surely know where you can report it. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:48, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I know where to report it, and of course I will not report you: I’m here to create and categorize content, not to fight petty battles. And you know that non-admins closing is only okay for trivial things, when there’s no real discussion — which was never the case at hand: The case here was you wanting to delete categories because they were empty: The moment they were not empty anymore you should have closed the CfD discussion, indeed, but as moot and back off, not to go ahead and uncategrozize the new image and a bunch of subcats as you did. I have no illusions that there’s a sizeable portion of admins thinking the same way as you do, but I’m still right and you’re still wrong no matter how you cook it. -- Tuválkin 14:00, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree for now. For the record, I've closed all kinds of CFDs with substantial discussions, and no one has ever complained about my non-admin status before. - Themightyquill (talk) 14:03, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Both categories?[edit]

I belive someone who add a photo in Category:Talavera pottery of Puebla can add the second category: Talavera de Puebla‎. I believe we need spanish and english categories to help people searching in both language.

Food categories[edit]

Hi. Another question on food: I opened a cat on Squid dishes yesterday. I'm a staunch supporter of "dishes" categories, because things (cats) like "squid-based food" sound to my ears like a canned squid paste or something, other squid based food items, and then also the dishes, elaborated plates. Am I right? In that case we should push all "national" squid dishes like French, Thai etc under my new cat. If that is not the case then we should delete this new cat (snif...) and also put the newly created "stuffed squid" cat directly under the Category:Squid-based food. I leave it to your appreciated taste and experience on this area. --E4024 (talk) 07:46, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@E4024: I guess there is some pattern under Category:Seafood for that. Normally, I'd suggested moving Category:Squid-based food to Category:Squid as food or Category:Squid (food), but I guess some of these foods/dishes are only using squid ink, so maybe you're not eating the squid itself? I'm not sure. - Themightyquill (talk)
Weird, it seems there is already a Category:Squid as food. That certainly seems redundant, no? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:17, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we should kill squid-based (or this one that you just said) and then put "dishes" just below the one that survives. --E4024 (talk) 08:27, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess User:Takeaway could also add something to this talk. --E4024 (talk) 08:29, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fw. Spices[edit]

Hi. They are redundant categories. Can you merge them? --Allforrous (talk) 17:35, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Allforrous: I think they are very similar, but not redundant. Category:Capsicum is a genus, Category:Capsicum species is a subcategory for different species in that genus, Category:Chili peppers is a category for some of the fruit from that genus (in the same way, we have both Category:Malus, Category:Malus domestica and CategorY:Apples). And Category:Paprika is a different spice than Category:Chilli powder. The definition of spices varies, but I'd say that only the later two, and possibly Category:Chilli flakes should be in Category:Spices. Not everything that imparts flavour is a spice, by my definition. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:27, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Other" categories like those at CfD[edit]

There are a bunch more categories of this type. Do you think I should CfD them all, or can they wait until these are resolved, and possibly use them as precedent? --Auntof6 (talk) 03:50, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. My initial thought was the latter. You might get grief for it though. Maybe wait for these to be resolved, then make a single discussion and tag all the categories with the same cfd template? - Themightyquill (talk) 07:26, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good. I suppose there could be reasons that aren't explained in the categories. Thanks for your input. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:42, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6: I just stumbled upon Category:Brennisteinsþúfur in other countries - be sure to include it. =) - Themightyquill (talk) 22:13, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll look for categories that have the word "other" somewhere other than at the start of the name. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:51, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cup and rings, etc[edit]

Responded to your Cup and rings, etc.

I probably need to understand why you deleted the category 'Kings Road' for photos also linked to 'Auld Clay Road'. The Kings Road runs all the way from Kilwinning to Portencross however a section has rather unusually been named the 'Auld Clay Road' so for a stretch it is both. Does some rule come in to play here? RSLlGriffith (talk) 10:51, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosser1954: Yes, as per COM:OVERCAT, images should always be in the most specific category. I added Category:Auld Clay Road to the Kings Road category before moving the files to only the Auld Clay Road section. Just as images of the Empire State Building go in Category:Empire State Building but not in Category:New York, images of the Ault Clay Road should be in the category for that section. That is, unless I've misunderstood and the Auld Clay Road exists outside the Kings Road. It's a section of the latter, right, not just that they intersect for a while? - Themightyquill (talk) 10:57, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How do 'Search engines' respond to category titles? If someone is searching for the 'Kings Road' would 'Auld Clay Road' locate it? Is the search engine also searching the description on the page? RSLlGriffith (talk) 09:52, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Rosser1954 Yes, I believe search engines would also look at both image descriptoins and category descriptions. Moreover, if someone searches for "Auld Clay Road" and finds Category:Auld Clay Road, that would be a sub-category of Category:Kings Road, North Ayrshire, so they would easily find King's Road. The reverse is also true. - Themightyquill (talk) 12:55, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Closed it![edit]

Category discussion warning

Category:Photographs_of_men_with_glasses has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Streetcars in Seattle[edit]

I see you moved Category:Streetcars in Seattle (historic) to Category:History of streetcars in Seattle. I realize the old name wasn't great, but I'm not sure about the new one either. It's not so much "history of" as the old pre-WWII system as against more recent streetcar systems. - Jmabel ! talk 14:08, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: You're right. Please see my alternative proposal at Commons:Categories for discussion/2013/11/Category:Heritage streetcars in Seattle. - Themightyquill (talk) 14:33, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this change. When you remove/replace a metacat template that uses the topic cat parameter, please remember to manually add that category. I added it back in this case. Personally, I'd rather people didn't use that parameter because it makes it harder to manage categories if thery need to be changed.

By the way, is it customary to make "by name" categories hidden? I hadn't noticed that before. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:01, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6: Oh, thanks for fixing my mistake! I should check the others, but I think they were all using {{Catcat}} already. And yes, it seems to be customary to make "by name" categories hidden. Perhaps because they are essentially flat categories? - Themightyquill (talk) 11:06, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Themightyquill, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

A couple of shuttles

Hi there, new admin, some sweet food for you. Could you have a look at the cat Heads and around and help a little to organize things better in the offal/awful area? While we have a specific cat for pork, mutton dishes go together with dog heads and things like that. Of course if other people eat dog meat while I don't, I have no right to say them anything; but I would prefer my sheep head(s) to be categorized a little better... Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 13:10, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@E4024: Thanks for letting me know, but I don't really see the problem. Surely sheep heads are also categorized by some kind other sheep meat related category, or could be. From a quick glance, there are more images of pork heads than there are of all other animals combined. If you want to sub-categorize by animal (and if there are sufficient images to justify it) you're welcome to do so, I guess. I don't think any of these have their own wikipedia article either. - Themightyquill (talk) 21:02, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

category change[edit]

Hi Themightyquill, I happened to note this change of category. This person is however not a Commons user. He has submitted an image through the website Wikiportret. Can you revert your change or consider to use another category? There are several other photographers who act like this, I have a list of them in my favourites. Kind regards, Elly (talk) 15:16, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The same for this one, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Photographs_by_Filip_Naudts&action=history, probably others as well. Elly (talk) 15:17, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ellywa: Thanks for your message. I can't revert the change because the old category doesn't exist anymore and wasn't appropriate anyway if Jeroen van Lelieveld is not a "photographer on Wikimedia Commons." (Honestly, I'm not sure if I understand why there is a category for a photographer who isn't a commons user and who has only submitted one photograph. Can it just be deleted?) Anyway, these categories could be moved to Category:Photographs by photographer and/or Category:Wikiportrait uploads, which seems to already hold some. If you want, you could create Category:Photographs by Wikiportrait photographers? - Themightyquill (talk) 15:39, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This photographer had only one image, it happened to be on my whatchlist. Others have many more. The title of the category you added is actually wrong and I, nor the OTRS team of wikiportret was notified. Could you please add a correct category as you suggest? Because your change lead to a wrong result. Kind regards, Elly (talk) 15:50, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ellywa: I didn't add an incorrect category. I changed the name of the category it had been misplaced in by you. I've moved it to Category:Wikiportrait uploads, and I'm going to nominate the category for deletion. - Themightyquill (talk) 16:00, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In the Dutch language this is called a "jijbak". The category was oké untill you renamed it.... Photographers on Commons is perfectly clear, a category of photographers whose work is available on Commons. Elly (talk) 17:38, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In the English language, your comments are called "nonsense." What did you think Category:Photographs by photographer was for? By your logic, we should have a category called "Photographs on commons" on commons. Everything on commons is in commons, so we don't need to categorize it as such. Since January 2015, the category description has read "Photographs by users of Wikimedia Commons." You are wrong, and I have fixed your error, so there is no need for further discussion. Stop bothering me. - Themightyquill (talk) 06:31, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Szczebrzeszynski: You didn't add the authority control number to the creator file or to the category, you created a "Categories for Discussion" (CFD) page and placed it there. Hi. Good to see you back from vacations. The above is a cat you edited today. Some time ago I also edited it but was rudely (being accused of vandalism, nada menos) reverted. What do you think of having this as a subcat (indeed the only one) of Category:Green windows? Note: Janelas verdes may mean "green windows", but, so what? Cheers. --E4024 (talk) 13:37, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@E4024: Generally, we don't sort things according to the literal translation of their names, but maybe I've missed something. I'm sure whoever accused you of vandalism simply misunderstood. Maybe you could start a discussion on the talk page? - Themightyquill (talk) 13:52, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good morning. I try to avoid discussing with people who treat me rudely, this is why I did not follow up the above issue. Look, indeed the question is being rude to colleagues what makes me come to an admin. This morning I sat before my computer thinking about how to handle Category:Beco do Carneiro (Lisbon) which is under Category:Rams! I was thinking how to remove this single-file and unrelated category from a category about animals, placed there only because in the title there is the name of the same animal, without receiving a "vandalism" accusation... Then I saw Commons:Deletion requests/File:Romanova Taty.jpg. Have I done anything to receive such a rude personal attack? A person who says whose wife is Russian is disturbed from the fact that I find Russian women beautiful as Bond girls! There is nothing there that any Russian woman would not find "nice" and certainly nobody else would take as insulting or disturbing... I think some admin must tell someone that we cannot be rude to other people who are trying to contribute here, with their particular way of being. Some make jokes about this or that and some other may be more serious; but accusing people of vandalism because they changed a cat or insulting them because they made a compliment... I cannot qualify this, it's simply incredible for me. --E4024 (talk) 07:56, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your organs[edit]

Hi. Not only your eyes but also your hands are failing, ye old man! You forgot to sign... Please don't block me for teasing an admin. Good week! :) --E4024 (talk) 08:39, 11 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Karel Langer - Bechyně[edit]

zajímá mě co vás vedlo k návrhu ke smazání - autor je mrtev 70 let a dílo je volné --Martin wolf (talk) 11:25, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Make your comments on the nomination page please. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:09, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

proč nepíšete česky? JÁ NEROZUMÍM --Martin wolf (talk) 07:25, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I do not write Czech because I'm not Czech. Rozumim jen trohu cesky. Prominte. It is best to argue about the image here: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Karel Langer - Bechyně (1920).jpg. - Themightyquill (talk) 07:48, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Martin wolf: Co vás to stálo? - Themightyquill (talk) 09:01, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

-- Lothar Spurzem (talk) 12:47, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Spurzem: By nominating it for deletion, I can set it to undelete almost-automatically in 2018. If you can find evidence that he died in 2016, so much the better. If I was deleting it "for fun" as you suggest, then I could have simply deleted it as an admin, as you also noted. - Themightyquill (talk)
Wieso sollte Kau 2016 gestorben sein? Vermutlich ist es ein Schreibfehler. Nach meiner Kenntnis starb er 1946, wie ich bereits schrieb. -- Lothar Spurzem (talk) 13:11, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Georg Kau is in Category:1947 deaths and de:Georg Kau also says 1947. The Germany National Library also says 1947. If you have other sources, please provide them. I'm open minded. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:17, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please look here and here. -- Lothar Spurzem (talk) 18:45, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can point that out on the nomination page, but your first link has a question mark next to the date, and I'd trust the German National Library over an auction site. - Themightyquill (talk) 18:47, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

French horns[edit]

Hi, I reverted some of your categorisations of French horns because I don't think they qualify as "diagrams". Please let me know if you think otherwise. Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 07:40, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Gnom: No, that was my mistake. Thanks for reverting! - Themightyquill (talk) 08:00, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Izmir - İzmir[edit]

Hi. You must also revive Category:İzmir Province and all related subcats etc. I tried to move the cat from "Izmir" but have no force. (Need buttons. :) Ty. --E4024 (talk) 13:57, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@E4024: There are a lot. Any help you can offer would be great. Make sure to reference the CfD in your edit summary. - Themightyquill (talk) 14:00, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to, but I'm too busy opening new cats like Category:Buildings with flags of Turkey and Category:Buildings with flags in Istanbul. Sorry... --E4024 (talk) 14:22, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm helping with this now. Once all the categories are moved, a bot should take care of the rest within 24 hours. Guanaco (talk) 17:46, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pings[edit]

Pings work only if a signature is saved in the same edit as a ping is added (or corrected), so I don't think the ping in this edit worked. One way to make it work is to replace your signature with four tildes in the same edit as you add or correct the ping. --Auntof6 (talk) 15:24, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I am bad with cats a lot but can you use it to add Category:female red hair and category:fringe (hair) for all of the files who represents Jamie ? --Panam2014 (talk) 12:28, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need a second opinion[edit]

You and I have discussed "by name" categories before. (See User talk:Auntof6/Archives/2016#"By name" categories vs flat list.) I've been having a contentious discussion with another user about this topic. Would you be willing to look at it and tell me if I'm off base? The discussion is at User talk:Cmuelle8#Categories by name. Thanks much. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:21, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I liked Category:New and old fashion in art better. The new name will probably convey very little to those interested in fashion history. Churchh (talk) 21:06, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Churchh: How could it convey very little? It much more explicitly describes the contents. -- Themightyquill (talk) 10:21, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A person who knows something about fashion history might not have any idea what "Age comparisons of fashion in art" means (it certainly does not use terminology standard to the field), while "New and old fashion in art" is simple and much clearer -- it echoes the 1790s captions "AH! QUELLE ANTIQUITÉ!!!" and "OH! QUELLE FOLLIE QUE LA NOUVEAUTÉ....." -- Churchh (talk) 12:52, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Carriages (in fact categories of most horse-drawn vehicles)[edit]

Eighteen months ago you put this and other categories up for discussion. It seems its never been resolved. I've some new thoughts. Should I add them to the CfD discussion or start something new? Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 11:55, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Eddaido Please add them to the existing CfD. You might try {{Ping}}ing the other people who have already comments, to make sure they see the discussion has been revived. - Themightyquill (talk) 17:15, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
