Hello, The Evil IP address!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hallo

--The Evil IP address (talk) 14:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Autotranslation

Hi, there's no reason to autotranslate templates that are only used on localized pages. It doesn't make sense when reading a page in one language and the templates are in a different language simply because of the interface you're using. Likewise, if you can't read the rest of the page what good is changing the template? Policy pages and like will have links to translations of those pages when they exist. The whole page, template included, should change. Having two sets of links will confuse users. Also, adding Translated tag (without a localization parameter) doesn't make sense for templates you can use directly. Rocket000 (talk) 13:51, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, you definitely have a point here. Yesterday, I was in the belief that someone had started autotranslating this template and didn't finish yet, but I now found out that I seem to be wrong. I know that this isn't an excuse and it doesn't make anything better, but—see it more as an explanation why I autotranslated the template. Thanks for notifying me about this. --The Evil IP address (talk) 15:46, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
I kinda thought you were more or less finishing up what someone else started. Not a big deal. And thanks for the rest of the work you're doing. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 13:29, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Speedy tagging

Perhaps you could use a less contentious rationale than "holy shit...this is absolutely out of scope"? :) Ceranthor 15:53, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Right, should have taken this a bit more seriously, which I have done now. (The thing that made me say this was the fact that the page was 600 KB). I admit that I sometimes just say what I think, which sometimes can be useful, but in this situation I should probably not have said that. Hope you don't mind too much. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:02, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
No, not at all. I was doing it for the sake of the page creator, notice the ":)". Ceranthor 16:05, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Didn't see that. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:23, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Sie sprechen Deutsch sehr, sehr gut. My father is 100% and is from Bolchum, but won't teach me any, so I learn myself from books and such. De-1. Ceranthor 16:34, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, indeed, I do. One reason why most autotranslated templates by me often only have an English and German version (my French isn't yet good enough). I'm also fighting against bad wording or formulation. Btw, your pictures are not bad. I'm still a noob at photographing, but I love good photos. Just a pity that there are so many pictures out of scope here... --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:02, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, those are not my photographs! I do not really partake in photography often... although I am quite good at it. I nominated all those pictures on the English Wikipedia. Thanks for thinking so highly of me, I wish I could take pictures of out space. Lol, :) Ceranthor 17:06, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Translations

Hey, I noticed you're translating system messages to your subpages. Please consider using translatewiki.net, the MediaWiki localisation project so all MediaWikis will have those messages translated. — str4nd 10:53, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Ah, interesting. What I'm actually doing is to "translate" all German system messages that have changed here at Commons into formal German. The problem is that people who use that language setting are confronted with outdated system messages (for example the name of the gallery namespace is still called "page" in this language setting). But the link you showed me sounds interesting, and I'm probably gonna take a look at it to see if there's something I can do. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:06, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Then you have to translate "Main page" and "Gallery" to formal German and get someone to create MediaWiki:Nstab-main/de-formal (like this). Other system messages can be translated on translatewiki. — str4nd 16:47, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately it's not only this...but I'm registered there now and will look where I'm able to help. Thanks for the link. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:06, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi! I read your message on the French-speaking VP and I'm volunteering for the task, except I'm not sure what I must do exactly. Am I to translate entirely or not? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 14:51, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I got it after reading your message on the other VPs. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 14:57, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Done, but I see there is a template Speedy delete text and its translations. Are they obsolete now? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 15:24, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. The template Speedy delete text is obsolete now, but I will ask an admin to merge the histories so that the authors from both templates are mentioned in the edit history. Again, thank you for translating. --The Evil IP address (talk) 15:44, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Evil IP address. Bitte entlinken bevor du SLA stellst, danke. --Leyo 18:49, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

--The Evil IP address (talk) 19:16, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Den Grund meines Postings siehst du eins drunter (meine Benutzerseite war auch verunstaltet). ;-) Aber ansonsten hast du recht. --Leyo 21:12, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of template

You caused quite a mess, see User talk:Multichill#strange "Speedy" on user pages. Always use the noinclude tags. Multichill (talk) 20:33, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Right, should have known better. Won't happen again and sorry for the inconvinience. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry but can you please explin how that was copyright.--Launchballer (talk) 13:47, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

The thing is that Lady Gaga or her company owns the copyright for the song. Most musicians let their songs protect by copyright. Otherwise, it would be possible to just download the song from somewhere without the musicians getting money for their songs. Thus, they only allow the people to listen to their song when they have paid money to hear it. The song might possibly be used on the English wikipedia under their policy, but on Commons fair use is not allowed. Let me know if you have any further questions. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:57, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Hei! language and projectname are not working the way you reverted it. Kwj2772 reverted one's changes similar to that one oneself, but missed that one. Parameters language and project from PD-user-w have to be used to make it work. 195.50.197.68 09:08, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

This might be because Language and Projectname don't yet have many translations. In French and Plattdüütsch, two language codes where both template translations exist, it works perfectly fine. --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:36, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
No it doesn't, in French there is language missing, but that's becouse its language template is incomplete. In Plattdüütsch there is supposed to be "Wikipedia op Allemannsch" despite "Allemannsch Wikipedia", which is made possible by use of paramters project and language. The revision in question uses deprecated parameter #2. Also, in translations such as it'd be impossible to hide projectname and language written out in English and at the same time make it possible to provide it translated for PD-user-als where it would be possible with parameters language and project. Pikne (talk) 11:04, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah yeah, I got it. Reverted. --The Evil IP address (talk) 11:18, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

MWheader

I see you're preparing this for autotranslation. The problem is that it's likely to change a lot. I wasn't going to use Autotranslate for this but instead simply switch out the text. E.g. Instead of "The page forms part..." in the main template it would have something like with plain text on MWheader/text/xx and the default (English) not needed a separate page. There's actually only a couple things that need translating. Passing all the variables around is unnecessary (and likely to deter translators with the complexity. ;) Rocket000 (talk) 18:57, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

And congrats on becoming an admin! Rocket000 (talk) 18:58, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
If you know an easier way to autotranslate this, then this would be great. I just wanted to make this localizable, hoping that more people make suggestions for system messages. The way I did it was complicated, yeah, it even took a bit time to work out how to do this, so a more simple solution would be great. Thanks for the gratulation and your support in my RfA. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:10, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok, check it out. Translators shouldn't have to deal with all that other stuff. ;) Rocket000 (talk) 19:49, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi The Evil IP address, I see you created this template. You didn't add rtl/ltr support, I now did. The GNU-Layout and /lang template parts are important for languages like Arabic, the image part is just for fun. Could you please check if other templates you converted have the same problem? CC-Layout and PD-Layout have the same option. Thanks for helping out! Multichill (talk) 18:19, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

I actually knew of the rtl/ltr support, but misunderstood the templates. I was in the belief it would just be sufficient to add the |lang= parameter on the subpage, which I've also done there. Simple error in reasoning, I'm gonna fix it (should only be the /layout templates), just let me finish the one thing I'm currently doing. Thanks for notifying me, always good to see how to improve one's templates. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:28, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
This is quite a difficult template construction so it's easy to make mistakes. I usually take an already correctly converted template as reference. A guide is available at Template:Autotranslate/doc btw. No rush to fix it, just don't forget it ;-) Multichill (talk) 19:10, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
