First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Quand un Wikimedien télécharge une photo sur Commons, pas de problème, on sait, on présume que c'est la sienne.

Quand c'est une oeuvre composite qui est téléchargée, oeuvre qui a été au préalable présentée telle quelle au public, on ne peut qu'avoir des doutes sur celui qui détient effectivement le droit de mettre cette oeuvre sous licence libre. Quand en plus on n'a aucune information sur ce qui lie cette personne et l'organisme qui a édité l'oeuvre en premier... il a un problème.

Je viens de faire un mail circonstancié sous mon identité réelle à permissions-commons-fr@wikimedia.org j'espère que cela suffira. La procédure pénale me parait soudain bien simple à côté du fonctionnement de wikipédia, mais c'était mon premier essai de versement d'un fichier. Merci de votre aide et conseils en tous cas. Bon, j'ai fait ce qu'il fallait en écrivant à 'Permissions - Wikimedia Commons (fr)' avec tous les éléments requis. J'ai reçu du contributeur volontaire une réponse à 80% copier-coller récapitulant ce que je devais faire ( ce que j'ai déjà fait en réalité) et me promettant remaniement et suppression de ma page, suspecte d'autobiographie. Les bras m'en tombent...Bref, je jette l'éponge et supprime le fichier de la page. Je le vire aussi de commons. Comme cela c'est réglé. Pour une illustration dont je suis proprio et sur lequel je donne une licence libre, je pensais que c'était simple. Erreur et découragement. Qui est-ce qui t'as répondu ? As-tu bien mentionné de quel fichier il s'agissait, et les échanges que nous avons eu ? Un peu agacé d'autant plus que j'ai quand même balancé mon identité réelle et mon mail pro, j'ai retiré le fichier de la page, puis me suis ravisé, et j'ai tout relu. Je crois comprendre que j'avais omis de remettre dans le mail le nom de la licence choisie. Donc, sans le re-publier pour le moment, j'ai renvoyé un mail à permissions-wikimedia Commons en récapitulant le tout ( auteur, description, licence). Tout cela n'est pas bien grave, ce n'est jamais qu'une illustration sur une page que pas grand monde ne doit lire, mais c'est le speech sur la licéité de ma page qui m'a désarçonné le plus à vrai dire.
