Pay attention to copyright
File:Timothy B. Sailors.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

@Christian Ferrer: Dear Mr Ferrer, Please undo your deletion of my file. I am both the creator and subject of the photograph. No other human being was directly involved in the production of this image. My mere use of this self-produced photograph of myself on my own websites does not mean that I do not have the right to make it freely licensed, as I have chosen to do. Many thanks, TBSailors (talk) 10:39, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello, "Wikimedia Commons only accepts media that are explicitly freely licensed", see com:Licensing, however the image appears in the web [1] without an explicit free license, anybody can come and say "it's me who took the photo". In order to protect the rights of the copyright holder of the photo, the copyright holder, even if it is you, must send a permission to OTRS, where you can read how to do it, or a free license must be added to the web site. Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:48, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • According to the link you gave for OTRS, I do not need to contact them (and wait 58 days). It says there that contacting OTRS is unnecessary if "The image was first published on my website, or on my own space of a shared website." You'll notice that the e-mail address affiliated with this (my) Wikimedia Commons account (t.b.sailors@uni-tuebingen.de) has the same user ID and domain as my university website and that the e-mail address is even listed on my website. I truly appreciate your caution, but in this case, as outlined on the Wikimedia Commons OTRS site, as a copyright holder who has 'published' the image on on my website, contacting OTRS is unnecessary. Thanks in advance for reversing your deletion.TBSailors (talk) 11:10, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You missed that sentence : "That's great! Please follow Creative Commons' instructions to adopt the free culture license of your choice. It will then be reviewed when files are uploaded by you or others. Use the Internet Archive's "Save Page Now" feature to store proof of your license statement. ", that's mean that your website must have a free license. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:21, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah - a Creative Commons licence? Great! I've already granted that for use of my photo on LibraryThing: http://www.librarything.com/pic/280973. So that should mean I don't have to add another indicator to my website, right? Thanks for your help.TBSailors (talk) 11:35, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
