Can you make 1948 Pacific typhoon season track maps, Please

Hurricane Images

Two things, when you add hurricane track maps from the National Hurricane Center, go an image like Storm Name 5-day (or 3-day)track map.gif and upload a new version there. Also, when you upload images of storms name it Storm Name XX Month Year.jpg as per naming conventions for other storms. --Joan97 (talk) 19:33, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: MODIS Data

I have HEG and it doesn't convert as well. :( I usually get flattened images here and here. The first link covers some areas TC occur and the second link also have TCs. This link have some very low-res images as well. HurricaneSpin (talk) 00:48, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

The image is from the GOES-14 satellite which is owned by NOAA. It was found in a index of published images kept on this web site [1]. The land and water is from Blue Marble, Next Generation which is produced by NASA. Here's the link to that [2]. All of these sources are works found from a government source, therefore are in the Public Domain.

Color GOES Images

Hello,

I was wondering where you got the data to make the coloured GOES images (as found in the 1982 Pacific hurricane season). Also, if you have any spare time, could you explain how to make those coloured images?

Here's the link for the satillite data [3] in the link are years of tropical cyclone seasons. The links for the cyclone image are not labled by name, but by a letter. Here's an example - 1982011S11140/ The S in the name tells the cyclone was in the southern hemisphere. N means the cyclone was in the northern hemisphere. Go to the AVHRR visiable data and that where the name of the cyclone and the time the image was taken is. Click on the png. file of perfered time and save it. The next step I use Photoshop with. The colored land and sea background is here: [4] once uploaded you will need to srink the image to about 10327 X 5164 px. You change the png. to RBG color and drag it over to the world image and you overlay it to where the cyclone happened at the time. Crop the image, and set the opacity to 100% on layer 1. In the next step I like to use the clone stamp tool with these settings; Mode = Screen Opacity = 44% Flow = 100%. I choose an area on the background image that corresponds with the satellite image, and I color the image with one layer of color. Afterwords I correct contrast and set the saturation up 37%. And if the image is a bit dark or light, I adjust levels to a correct setting. Flatten image and save. You can undo history to repeat steps with another image as the clone stamp still has a correct location of the world image. It's a bit long but that's the way I create the images. :) Supportstorm (talk) 12:16, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

This is very good. I also foregot to tell you, if you cannot judge where a storm is, you can use Google Earth and with the KML file that goes along with the image, and that using equalize will sometimes give you a better image. Nice job. :) Supportstorm (talk) 17:09, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

1990 Hurricane Season Images

I am sorry, I checked the season article on English Wikipedia and none of the storms had the new AVHRR images. Therefore, I got the images, and used Commonist to upload them. Only then did I notice that you had already uploaded the images.

No, the cyclone passed by a subset on the MODIS Rapid Response website. The subset are flattened for other website that need the images. I used Photoshop to correct contrast and remove noise, but I wish there was a software that could flatten the real-time images, that would be very helpful. Hope this clears things up a little. A new standard per WP:TROP

Hello there, and I appreciate your uploading hi-resolution MODIS data. In the Wikiproject: Tropical Cyclones, some of us discussed about images. In the future we wish to see more cyclone images, and as now MODIS data is easier to acquire, the project hoped to have a standard size for images. And that is 5000*5000px and 250m/px. This is because some storms are larger than others but in the nature of their image, they look a lot smaller. I hope I cleared some stuff for you and if you need any help, just go to my talk page. Typhoon Dot images need better sourcing

Hi there. I'm doing a review of Typhoon Dot (1989) and I can't make sense of the sourcing of File:Dot jun 9 1989 0620Z.jpg and File:Dot jun 10 1989 0610Z.jpg (both used in the article). The source statement indicates that this is a composite, but I'm struggling to figure out how that would be possible, and I can't find anything on either source that would help generate those images. I'm a bit confused as to how the two sources combined. Was one overlayed onto the other? Is this generated by software using a data feed? I'm more concerned that it dosen't really give an indication as to how the image came into being as I am concerned that the links are dead. I've answered how they are made in the section "GOES Images" asked by Iune above, but I have modified it since. The links are not dead, I'm in the process of updating the source of the color land data that I use to make the image. The foreground image comes from AVHRR data of various satellites collected from 1978 to present. All sources come from government programs so I doubt they will expire anytime soon.
If you need more info, here is a link to the HURSAT web page that explains where the data comes from and its uses.

Not much can really be done, the image hasn't been projected to eliminate image distortion, so I cannot superimpose it on a map. On another note, I was looking through the AVHRR images of Susan and did find other images of her while near peak intensity that were decent, Jan 5 0356Z, Jan 5 1910Z, and Jan 6 0345Z. Distribution range in Myotis lucifugus (little brown bat) map

Hi. I just realize that the range of distribution of Myotis luucifugus (little brown bat) shown in wikipedia is not the resent one. The IUCN has the updated version of it.

Yes It was from the re-analysis. I was trying to update the 1934 Atlantic hurricane season with the new information and the track numbers became mixed up with the addition and subtraction of a few storms. Oversampling?

Hi,

Just had a look at some of your most recent uploads. Glad to see someone using the track package has finally figured out what --res is for(!) That said, I'd rather not use the program at all (and do that in GIS instead, with much more control).

One concern I do have is with your satellite uploads: Higher resolution is not always better. If the source data is 5000px wide then the final version should be no higher than that, as however good the processing is its not going to add detail by upsampling. MODIS provides up to 250m resolution, at 45N that translates to 315px per degree.

There also seem to be a ton of artifacts in some files, eg File:Kyle 28 sept 2008 1800Z.jpg.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I really didn't understand why that image became so distorted when I sent it through the program I was using. HDFLook indicated that it's native resolution was that and I didn't really see much of a quality difference upon review (except for the noise which I think is being caused by the color profile). Hmm... I would consider Category:Atmospheric circulation or Category:Low pressure systems as a alternative, but 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is the most relative category for the image as it was a tropical system that formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Since I could not really locate it visually on the link you provided as source and I could not find any mention of it in the NHC event archives, I thought it was misplaced. Could you generate an image of 1998's Cyclone Ron, using the same technique and sources that you used to construct images of other Southern Hemisphere cyclones, like Cyclones Susan, Hina and Agnielle? The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of a patch of fog off the coast of Eastern China and Shanghai on April 15, 2013. The patch of fog was rapidly moving north east at that time, and ship wave cloud formations can be seen off the coast of Shanghai caused by air disturbed by small islands. A smaller fog patch also lingers off southern Shanghai's coast can be seen in the image. Besides Shanghai and fog, on the top left of the image, inter-linking towns can also be seen, along with yellow sediment in the Yellow sea and Eastern China sea. The beginning part of the track is from the NRL, and the rest are from the advisories issued by the JMA. The only problem is the track is in 10-min winds, and the JTWC doesn't consider the storm tropical so I don't expect an update to their data. Supportstorm (talk) 15:13, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Ip user 119.236.232.79 has changed the offical peak intensity pressure of Usagi to 882 hpa. Please fix the artcile and the 2013 pacifc typhoon. There are GeoTIFF here too. I think it is much better for reader to see annotated version with coastlines marked. Such variant is standard for NOAA images. The Geotiff is the original quality image without boundaries, and like you said the in 250m resolution image it is difficult to them. I'll upload the annotated MODIS image regardless however I might suggest this image from NPP Suomi that is high resolution and has easier to see annotation. How to make the typhoon track

I want to know how can you make the track map photos. You make it by following Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tracks, or just photoshop it??? If you use the Wikiproject, can you teach me how to use that GIT? Thanks.

I used to use photoshop however I switched to the track generator which is so much easier and faster to use. Depending on what operating system you are using you will need to download some extra software. With Linux or Mac all you have to do is use your command terminal to run the program. With windows you will need to download Cygwin. Once you have met these requirements run this command from the terminal in your home directory:
 git clone git://github.com/titoxd/wptc-track.git

Or go here to download it directly if you don't have git:https://github.com/titoxd/wptc-track

Using Git will automatically download the program. After downloading run this command after moving into the tracks sub directory with the terminal. 

gcc -g -Wall -Werror template.c tab.c track.c tcr.c atcf.c hurdat2.c hurdat.c md.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs cairo` -o track

This should compile the program and you are done installing. Message me back if you have any trouble thus far.

Please stop replacing those track maps

You replaced most of the 2013 Pacific typhoon track maps with the IBTrACS version. However, the JTWC best track data is more proper for general usage and without confusion. As there is no significant difference, the IBTrACS version is unnecessary in this case. -- Meow 03:47, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

The tracks are unbiased since it uses all the agencies best track data and are all given the same weight. The difference in what the JTWC BT portray can be hugely erroneous to the consensus and that is why I replaced them. The IBTrACS tracks are also usually smoother and more complete than the JTWC BT. Hey, I just noticed...

...that you don't seem to be including leading zeroes on dates for your uploads. While it may not appear useful to include these zeroes at first glance, they make a difference in terms of how files sort. It will not make a difference if a storm dissipates before the tenth day of that month, but if it does survive that long, then the sorting of files in categories will be thrown off. Say you have the following seven files (I just chose a generic name for the storm).

  • Bob Jul 2 2015 1640Z
  • Bob Jul 5 2015 1700Z
  • Bob Jul 8 2015 1625Z
  • Bob Jul 11 2015 1535Z
  • Bob Jul 16 2015 1500Z
  • Bob Jul 17 2015 1620Z
  • Bob Jul 21 2015 1450Z

Well, you would hope the files would all sort in the order I presented them, like that, but they would actually sort like this:

  • Bob Jul 11 2015 1535Z
  • Bob Jul 16 2015 1500Z
  • Bob Jul 17 2015 1620Z
  • Bob Jul 2 2015 1640Z
  • Bob Jul 21 2015 1450Z
  • Bob Jul 5 2015 1700Z

That isn't what we want at all; the problem may be easily resolved by just adding that leading zero! Like this:

Also, would you mind saying in what way and why you modified File:Fay Oct 12 2014 1455Z.jpg? The file metadata indicates that the file was modified with Adobe Photoshop a few minutes before you uploaded, assuming that the timezones we are using are the same (else, it was modified a few minutes and X hours before you uploaded it). Maybe you just didn't see that part; I don't know, but regardless, you are providing the wrong URL for the source parameters, and you keep linking the 2km versions. Track update question

Hey there! I've been noticing that you've updated some of the Atlantic and East Pacific tracks before the TCR was made available on the NHC website. Where have you been getting the data for these tracks (such as Gonzalo and Odile)? The ATCF best track, which we use during the season, doesn't include the updates that are made in the TCR. Thanks in advance!

NSIDC NIMBUS satellite images

Hey there Supportstorm, another question on source data. A friend of mine recently noticed that you've been able to find images of tropical cyclones via the NIMBUS data recovery project. To be frank, we're currently working on the Atlantic hurricane reanalysis with the National Hurricane Center and we've had a lot of difficulty finding the old NIMBUS images. Although we can't use them quantitatively (i.e. Dvorak) they're great for getting an idea of what the system actually looked like and if the reanalyzed intensity seems appropriate.

It appears that you've already uploaded a few for 1970 in the West Pacific and I was hoping that you knew how to search through the database effectively. It would be invaluable to the project and we'd greatly appreciate your assistance. Thanks in advance!

NASA Reverb Echo is the service that gives you the option to search time and area of Nimbus data; however, I'm not sure if it is up to date to include the new digitized data. On a side note I think it is really cool that you are involved with the reanalysis effort. It's something that I want to do after I get through with college. Tropical Storm Ana

You recently uploaded File:Ana May 9 2015 1540Z.jpg. I appreciate the contribution, but there is one problem. After today, there will probably be more images uploaded, but because you didn't include a leading zero (like File:Ana May 09 2015 1540Z.jpg), files will not properly sort, so File:Ana May 10 2015 XXXXZ.jpg will be sorted before the file you just uploaded if/when it is created even though this (future) image would have been chronologically created after it. I'm just lowering the dynamic range of contrast so that highlights are not over bright with Photoshop. This makes images from Worldview look similar to the gallery counterpart. As with the smaller file size, there's no need to have a file from Worldview saved at the highest quality since there is already heavy jpeg compression evident when you download an image from that site anyway. Saving at a "high" setting is adequate and drastically reduces file size without a noticeable lost of image quality. Supportstorm (talk) 04:10, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
