Can you make 1948 Pacific typhoon season track maps, Please

1948 Pacific typhoon season track maps are deficiency Aretgil (talk) 09:44, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

There is only one main data set for the years 1945 through 1948 so I can't change anything in that aspect, however if you want better quality images, that I can do. Supportstorm (talk) 10:49, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
I mean wikimedia commons does not have Pacific typhoon season track maps in 1948 of each storm.http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:1948_Pacific_typhoon_season_track_maps Aretgil (talk) 11:35, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I thought there were already tracks, but, it shouldn't take me too long to produce them. Supportstorm (talk) 11:58, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Hurricane Images

Two things, when you add hurricane track maps from the National Hurricane Center, go an image like Storm Name 5-day (or 3-day)track map.gif and upload a new version there. Also, when you upload images of storms name it Storm Name XX Month Year.jpg as per naming conventions for other storms. --Joan97 (talk) 19:33, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Supportstorm!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Lately you've made many "touch ups" to cyclone images, I've asked a few other people and they feel that the original versions of the MODIS images look better. Can you please revert all MODIS images that you touched up? Thanks, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 02:10, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

I was wondering if you could send me "track.exe" for the track map generator? I can't seem to re-install the program.

If you could, could you send it to ma-on@live.com?

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

The image is from the GOES-14 satellite which is owned by NOAA. It was found in a index of published images kept on this web site [1]. The land and water is from Blue Marble, Next Generation which is produced by NASA. Here's the link to that [2]. All of these sources are works found from a government source, therefore are in the Public Domain.
The stated source is now valid and sufficient. This must be proceeded for every upload. If any questions remain, please read COM:L. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 09:13, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Color GOES Images

Hello,

I was wondering where you got the data to make the coloured GOES images (as found in the 1982 Pacific hurricane season). Also, if you have any spare time, could you explain how to make those coloured images?

Thanks

Iune(talk) 00:48, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Here's the link for the satillite data [3] in the link are years of tropical cyclone seasons. The links for the cyclone image are not labled by name, but by a letter. Here's an example - 1982011S11140/ The S in the name tells the cyclone was in the southern hemisphere. N means the cyclone was in the northern hemisphere. Go to the AVHRR visiable data and that where the name of the cyclone and the time the image was taken is. Click on the png. file of perfered time and save it. The next step I use Photoshop with. The colored land and sea background is here: [4] once uploaded you will need to srink the image to about 10327 X 5164 px. You change the png. to RBG color and drag it over to the world image and you overlay it to where the cyclone happened at the time. Crop the image, and set the opacity to 100% on layer 1. In the next step I like to use the clone stamp tool with these settings; Mode = Screen Opacity = 44% Flow = 100%. I choose an area on the background image that corresponds with the satellite image, and I color the image with one layer of color. Afterwords I correct contrast and set the saturation up 37%. And if the image is a bit dark or light, I adjust levels to a correct setting. Flatten image and save. You can undo history to repeat steps with another image as the clone stamp still has a correct location of the world image. It's a bit long but that's the way I create the images. :) Supportstorm (talk) 12:16, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

I made File:Hollanda 10 February 1994.jpg. Does this work?

Iune(talk) 16:33, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

This is very good. I also foregot to tell you, if you cannot judge where a storm is, you can use Google Earth and with the KML file that goes along with the image, and that using equalize will sometimes give you a better image. Nice job. :) Supportstorm (talk) 17:09, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

1990 Hurricane Season Images

Hello,

I am sorry, I checked the season article on English Wikipedia and none of the storms had the new AVHRR images. Therefore, I got the images, and used Commonist to upload them. Only then did I notice that you had already uploaded the images.

Sorry, 67.87.73.171 23:30, 10 December 2010 (UTC) (User:Iune)

It's ok. I guess from now on I will need to add the images to the articles after I upload them. Supportstorm (talk) 04:04, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Flattening MODIS Images

Hello,

I was wondering how you flatten the MODIS Terra and Aqua images for use in the articles. For example, File:Bianca 26 jan.jpg. Do you use a specific program or Photoshop?

Thanks,

Iune(talk) 19:56, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

No, the cyclone passed by a subset on the MODIS Rapid Response website. The subset are flattened for other website that need the images. I used Photoshop to correct contrast and remove noise, but I wish there was a software that could flatten the real-time images, that would be very helpful. Hope this clears things up a little. Supportstorm (talk) 01:20, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, Thanks for the clarification though! — Iune(talk) 21:53, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

A new standard per WP:TROP

Hello there, and I appreciate your uploading hi-resolution MODIS data. In the Wikiproject: Tropical Cyclones, some of us discussed about images. In the future we wish to see more cyclone images, and as now MODIS data is easier to acquire, the project hoped to have a standard size for images. And that is 5000*5000px and 250m/px. This is because some storms are larger than others but in the nature of their image, they look a lot smaller. I hope I cleared some stuff for you and if you need any help, just go to my talk page. Cheers. HurricaneSpin (talk) 16:46, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Typhoon Dot images need better sourcing

Hi there. I'm doing a review of Typhoon Dot (1989) and I can't make sense of the sourcing of File:Dot jun 9 1989 0620Z.jpg and File:Dot jun 10 1989 0610Z.jpg (both used in the article). The source statement indicates that this is a composite, but I'm struggling to figure out how that would be possible, and I can't find anything on either source that would help generate those images. Since you uploaded them, could you please clarify exactly where/how those files came to be? Thanks, Sven Manguard (talk) 19:14, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

I just checked it out, and yeah I know what you mean. The NASA link was changed over the summer and I had failed to update it. I guess I'll be going through and updating all the images on the correct source location. Thanks for telling me. Supportstorm (talk) 22:51, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm a bit confused as to how the two sources combined. Was one overlayed onto the other? Is this generated by software using a data feed? I'm more concerned that it dosen't really give an indication as to how the image came into being as I am concerned that the links are dead. If the process is explained, the rest of it can be put together 50 years from now long after the links are dead and people have stopped updating them. Sven Manguard (talk) 03:10, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
I've answered how they are made in the section "GOES Images" asked by Iune above, but I have modified it since. The links are not dead, I'm in the process of updating the source of the color land data that I use to make the image. The foreground image comes from AVHRR data of various satellites collected from 1978 to present. All sources come from government programs so I doubt they will expire anytime soon.
If you need more info, here is a link to the HURSAT web page that explains where the data comes from and its uses.

Hey

I was just wondering - would you be able to do anything with this image to try and get it looking decent?. It seems to be the only decent image of Susan at its peak intensity as it was moving away from Vanuatu. Thanks.Jason Rees (talk) 06:18, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

This is what I got, but given the poor lighting and resolution of the image, I don't see much use for it. Glad to help anyway. Supportstorm (talk) 22:53, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks - i know its got poor lighting but its the best image i could find while Susan was at its peak intensity just before it recurved away from Vanuatu. Unless of course you can do something with this.Jason Rees (talk) 23:32, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Not much can really be done, the image hasn't been projected to eliminate image distortion, so I cannot superimpose it on a map. On another note, I was looking through the AVHRR images of Susan and did find other images of her while near peak intensity that were decent, Jan 5 0356Z, Jan 5 1910Z, and Jan 6 0345Z. Just a suggestion Supportstorm (talk) 01:06, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
The second one would be good if you could get some of the brightness away. The first one may also be good subject to you getting rid of the bright white crap.Jason Rees (talk) 16:53, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Just been chatting to User:Cyclonebiskit and he reckons the second ones gonna be the best one.Jason Rees (talk) 15:26, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Well I processed the image earlier and there's nothing I can do about the over exposed image because it has blown out highlights. Here's what I got. Supportstorm (talk) 19:17, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok the image looks ok and it will do imo for the main image in the infobox for Susans article.Jason Rees (talk) 20:57, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Rename request for File:1934_Atlantic_tropical_storm_10_track.png

Hello. I've recently adhered to one of your rename requests. Now your going in for one one rename request with the same characteristic:

  1. original file is uploaded by someone else- an admin.
  2. you're stating storm names have changed.
I hope you are sincere in requesting renames. If that indeed is the case, then why don't you discuss the list of file for reuploads and rename accordingly with the admin's consent? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:53, 15 September 2012 (UTC).
Alright, I'll see if that can be arranged as this will become an ongoing issue. Supportstorm (talk) 06:00, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
An ongoing issue is better than a clash with two users. Let's do things on a friendly note and amicably. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:25, 15 September 2012 (UTC).
If this is what I think it is, then its a complete non-issue. Supportstorm, are the new uploads (and rename requests) associated with HURDAT reanalysis? If so I have no problem with any of it. It may be easier for you to let me know what files need moving, as I can execute the moves more readily. I can also carry out any deletions that might be necessary due to he renumbering.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:36, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes It was from the re-analysis. I was trying to update the 1934 Atlantic hurricane season with the new information and the track numbers became mixed up with the addition and subtraction of a few storms. So I guess the moving of the tracks in that season, that haven't already, would be helpful. Supportstorm (talk) 17:19, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Smile I'm happy that we're moving in a cordial, friendly, cooperative and productive direction. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:26, 17 September 2012 (UTC).

Oversampling?

Hi,

Just had a look at some of your most recent uploads. Glad to see someone using the track package has finally figured out what --res is for(!) That said, I'd rather not use the program at all (and do that in GIS instead, with much more control).

One concern I do have is with your satellite uploads: Higher resolution is not always better. If the source data is 5000px wide then the final version should be no higher than that, as however good the processing is its not going to add detail by upsampling. MODIS provides up to 250m resolution, at 45N that translates to 315px per degree.

There also seem to be a ton of artifacts in some files, eg File:Kyle 28 sept 2008 1800Z.jpg.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I really didn't understand why that image became so distorted when I sent it through the program I was using. HDFLook indicated that it's native resolution was that and I didn't really see much of a quality difference upon review (except for the noise which I think is being caused by the color profile). Anyway I've stopped using the program until I can figure how to fix those issues. Thanks for the suggestion for the tracks! Supportstorm (talk) 17:12, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

File:98L Jul 24 2012 1415Z.jpg

Hi,

I'm trying to give this image its proper sub-category. It is in the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season but the name 98L does not seems to fit that bassin. Could you help me there?

Pierre cb (talk) 11:46, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmm... I would consider Category:Atmospheric circulation or Category:Low pressure systems as a alternative, but 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is the most relative category for the image as it was a tropical system that formed in the Atlantic Ocean. I do realize it's not a official storm so I know why you're trying to find a better category. Supportstorm (talk) 22:54, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
Since I could not really locate it visually on the link you provided as source and I could not find any mention of it in the NHC event archives, I thought it was misplaced. On the other it could have been a precusor to one of the storms and I would have placed it in the proper subdirectory. With your answer, I will let it where it is now. Pierre cb (talk) 10:34, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Cyclone Ron image

Hi, Supportstorm. Could you generate an image of 1998's Cyclone Ron, using the same technique and sources that you used to construct images of other Southern Hemisphere cyclones, like Cyclones Susan, Hina and Agnielle? Preferably, at it's peak intensity. I'm constructing an article about it, and a better image than the one available here would be much appreciated. Thanks. ABC paulista (talk) 20:14, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Hope this image is what you were looking for. Good luck on the article. Supportstorm (talk) 23:27, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Dude, is even better than I thought it would be! Thanks, man. ABC paulista (talk) 18:14, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Your magic is needed

Hey man, I found some years ago this very interesting image in the South Pacific basin made by NESDIS, however, unfortunately, the quality of the image isn't that good. So, I wanna know if something can be done to make it looking better. Thanks. ABC paulista (talk) 21:41, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but as far as image quality no. I can make it look better, but it was saved as a .gif format so there's no way of recovering the lost color data. Want me do anything in particular with this image? Supportstorm (talk) 00:55, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Do what is possible. At least, make the cyclones more visible. ABC paulista (talk) 13:44, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Alright, well I definitely improved the contrast of the image, but like I said previously nothing can be done with color quality. Here it is. Supportstorm (talk) 17:05, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to barge in on this conversation but im wondering if we could not create our own version of that image using by combining images.Jason Rees (talk) 18:06, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Maybe, if the source to create the image exists, but I have so far been unable to locate any.Supportstorm (talk) 04:40, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Supportstorm, thanks for the improvement. It looks way better than the original. Jason Rees, I also tried to find something useful, but I failed even in finding the original souce of this image.ABC paulista (talk) 00:19, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

It was originally posted on this website owned by NOAA, but for whatever reason it has since been deleted. 05:51, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I know. Still, I didn't find the original URL on that site. ABC paulista (talk) 18:54, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
I didnt quite mean the original image - i kinda meant taking the IBTRACS base map and adding the IBTRACS imagery or something similar.Jason Rees (talk) 00:55, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I've already tried that. GMS doesn't cover Ron or Susan on the dates that all three systems were active like in the image above. Supportstorm (talk) 12:38, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
And what about HURSAT and/or AVHRR imagery? Maybe there's something useful there to make a montage. ABC paulista (talk) 17:45, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
It worked with the AVHRR imagery. I've made a collage for the 5th and 7th. Supportstorm (talk) 18:45, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
The 7th looks the best in my opinion since it doesnt have any sharp diagonal areas.Jason Rees (talk) 18:49, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Yeah. I just don't like all the empty space in both images, but it's faster than waiting a day for CLASS to process my orders for the originals. IMO the 5th is better because I can crop the black area out if needed. Supportstorm (talk) 19:04, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Hmm... There is a way to add a background on these collages, or adjust them on a map to eliminate these black spaces and make them look more natural? ABC paulista (talk) 19:18, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, would that be more preferable? Supportstorm (talk) 19:25, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes, if you have time. These black spaces give an "ugly" and unnatural aspect to the collages. ABC paulista (talk) 19:30, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Ok, so I replaced the black space with the map I used to colorize the images, unfortunately I'm getting the wiki bug that won't allow images to purge correctly. So double check for me to see if the images are updated. Supportstorm (talk) 19:45, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
The Jan 7th image is OK. But in the 5th, nothing chnaged. Not even in the log; both images look the same. ABC paulista (talk) 20:05, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Not much I can do at the moment. They really should have had this problem fixed a long time ago. :( Supportstorm (talk) 20:26, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
That's a pity... Still, thanks a lot for the hard work. Those satellite images are awesome! ABC paulista (talk) 20:40, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you :) Supportstorm (talk) 22:08, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Maybe we should upload your latest version at a different title, that i suspect would solve the problem.Jason Rees (talk) 22:54, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
No, if we wait long enough the server should eventually purge the image page and it should correct the display issue. Also you might try typing ?action=purge at the end of the url. That sometimes works. Supportstorm (talk) 01:10, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

It's not needed to reupload. The background appeared in both images. ABC paulista (talk) 18:21, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Uploading images of Imelda.

Hello, Supportstorm, i'd just like to say that when you upload satellite images of TS Imelda, please put it in the category i made: Category:Cyclone Imelda(2012) In the category, you can see that i've already uploaded images of the storm on April 3 2013.--Earth100 (talk) 02:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Could you please, in the future, add a space between the storm name and year. Like this: Imelda (2013) because it's proper syntax, as well as the right year. It's 2013, not 2012. Thanks. Supportstorm (talk) 10:09, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Okay.--Earth100 (talk) 12:50, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

This image you uploaded is beautiful! But, Supportstorm can you improve the quality and color of the image to make it look like an official version? Besides, is there any other images of Isabel which looks better, i mean, showing a more well defined look of an annular storm? Thank You!--Earth100 (talk) 15:24, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

How's that? As for another image I don't think there is one, it already has the appearance of of a well defined annular cyclone, so I'm not sure what you're looking for. Supportstorm (talk) 20:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Never mind, but can you improve the color, contrast of the Isabel image to make it look like an official one? --Earth100 (talk) 02:35, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of a patch of fog off the coast of Eastern China and Shanghai on April 15, 2013. The patch of fog was rapidly moving north east at that time, and ship wave cloud formations can be seen off the coast of Shanghai caused by air disturbed by small islands. A smaller fog patch also lingers off southern Shanghai's coast can be seen in the image. Besides Shanghai and fog, on the top left of the image, inter-linking towns can also be seen, along with yellow sediment in the Yellow sea and Eastern China sea. Yutu

Nice track map, where did you find the data?--Keith Edkins (talk) 08:28, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

The beginning part of the track is from the NRL, and the rest are from the advisories issued by the JMA. The only problem is the track is in 10-min winds, and the JTWC doesn't consider the storm tropical so I don't expect an update to their data. Supportstorm (talk) 15:13, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
I hope your now looking at adding the tracking data for 97W in as well, BTW we should get the final tracking data from JMA in about 6 weeks time.Jason Rees (talk) 20:43, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi! there is NASA annotated version of File:Haiyan_2013-11-08_0505Z.jpg - http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=82348

Would you like to upload http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=82348 to commons? `A5b (talk) 23:20, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

It's not going to be as high in resolution as the one already on Wikimedia, however if you prefer the annotated version it can be uploaded. Supportstorm (talk) 23:24, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
There are GeoTIFF here too. I think it is much better for reader to see annotated version with coastlines marked. Such variant is standard for NOAA images. Without coastlines reader can't imagine nor proportions, neither exact location of the typhoon. `A5b (talk) 05:45, 12 November 2013 (UTC) Ok, on high-quality version annotation is almost invisible, so I think, we should have this http://eoimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/82000/82348/haiyan_amo_2013312.jpg image available to illustrate the Haiyan articles in different wikis. `A5b (talk) 05:48, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
The Geotiff is the original quality image without boundaries, and like you said the in 250m resolution image it is difficult to them. I'll upload the annotated MODIS image regardless however I might suggest this image from NPP Suomi that is high resolution and has easier to see annotation. Supportstorm (talk) 11:42, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

I switched to File:Haiyan_8_Nov_2013_0157Z.jpg - very low res, but with coastlines and easier to understand what is pictured. I use it as first image in ru: article. Thanks! `A5b (talk) 02:28, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

How to make the typhoon track

I want to know how can you make the track map photos. You make it by following Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tracks, or just photoshop it??? If you use the Wikiproject, can you teach me how to use that GIT? Thanks.

Also, how do you know the tracks of 1939 Pacific typhoon season? Yaviky

I used to use photoshop however I switched to the track generator which is so much easier and faster to use. Depending on what operating system you are using you will need to download some extra software. With Linux or Mac all you have to do is use your command terminal to run the program. With windows you will need to download Cygwin. Once you have met these requirements run this command from the terminal in your home directory:
 git clone git://github.com/titoxd/wptc-track.git

Or go here to download it directly if you don't have git:https://github.com/titoxd/wptc-track

Using Git will automatically download the program. After downloading run this command after moving into the tracks sub directory with the terminal.

gcc -g -Wall -Werror template.c tab.c track.c tcr.c atcf.c hurdat2.c hurdat.c md.c `pkg-config --cflags --libs cairo` -o track

This should compile the program and you are done installing. Message me back if you have any trouble thus far.

To answer your question on where the track data comes from. They are in IBTrACS located here:[5] Supportstorm (talk) 07:11, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Please stop replacing those track maps

You replaced most of the 2013 Pacific typhoon track maps with the IBTrACS version. However, the JTWC best track data is more proper for general usage and without confusion. As there is no significant difference, the IBTrACS version is unnecessary in this case. -- Meow 03:47, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

The tracks are unbiased since it uses all the agencies best track data and are all given the same weight. The difference in what the JTWC BT portray can be hugely erroneous to the consensus and that is why I replaced them. The IBTrACS tracks are also usually smoother and more complete than the JTWC BT. So in all honesty I don't see a downside to using them. Supportstorm (talk) 01:57, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Hey, I just noticed...

...that you don't seem to be including leading zeroes on dates for your uploads. While it may not appear useful to include these zeroes at first glance, they make a difference in terms of how files sort. It will not make a difference if a storm dissipates before the tenth day of that month, but if it does survive that long, then the sorting of files in categories will be thrown off. Say you have the following seven files (I just chose a generic name for the storm).

  • Bob Jul 2 2015 1640Z
  • Bob Jul 5 2015 1700Z
  • Bob Jul 8 2015 1625Z
  • Bob Jul 11 2015 1535Z
  • Bob Jul 16 2015 1500Z
  • Bob Jul 17 2015 1620Z
  • Bob Jul 21 2015 1450Z

Well, you would hope the files would all sort in the order I presented them, like that, but they would actually sort like this:

  • Bob Jul 11 2015 1535Z
  • Bob Jul 16 2015 1500Z
  • Bob Jul 17 2015 1620Z
  • Bob Jul 2 2015 1640Z
  • Bob Jul 21 2015 1450Z
  • Bob Jul 5 2015 1700Z
  • Bob Jul 8 2015 1625Z

That isn't what we want at all; the problem may be easily resolved by just adding that leading zero! Like this:

  • Bob Jul 02 2015 1640Z
  • Bob Jul 05 2015 1700Z
  • Bob Jul 08 2015 1625Z
  • Bob Jul 11 2015 1535Z
  • Bob Jul 16 2015 1500Z
  • Bob Jul 17 2015 1620Z
  • Bob Jul 21 2015 1450Z

I hope you understand. Dustin (talk) 21:39, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Also, please link the 250m version with MODIS images. That is what you are uploading. Dustin (talk) 22:51, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
Also, would you mind saying in what way and why you modified File:Fay Oct 12 2014 1455Z.jpg? The file metadata indicates that the file was modified with Adobe Photoshop a few minutes before you uploaded, assuming that the timezones we are using are the same (else, it was modified a few minutes and X hours before you uploaded it). The image looks fine plain from the source, so I don't understand the reason for modifying it. Dustin (talk) 23:00, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
I removed some missing data chunks with a clone tool. I don't mean to sound harsh but could you please tone it down. You are coming off as being finicky. I'll add zeros to dates as that was a valid concern. Supportstorm (talk) 04:53, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for providing an explanation. I don't really know what you meant by "clone tool", but I will check. Dustin (talk) 20:58, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Okay, please look. I may have been a bit too pushy earlier, but I don't appreciate that you have ignored me with regards to the way you are providing links to the 2km versions instead of the 250m originals. Maybe you just didn't see that part; I don't know, but regardless, you are providing the wrong URL for the source parameters, and you keep linking the 2km versions. Maybe you have a legitimate reason for doing so, but would you please explain? Dustin (talk) 20:50, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Some users may have trouble loading the larger image, so it is quicker to load the 2km resolution image for everyone. This is not problematic as there are links for other resolution sizes on the right. Supportstorm (talk) 21:08, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Track update question

Hey there! I've been noticing that you've updated some of the Atlantic and East Pacific tracks before the TCR was made available on the NHC website. Where have you been getting the data for these tracks (such as Gonzalo and Odile)? The ATCF best track, which we use during the season, doesn't include the updates that are made in the TCR. Thanks in advance!

Regards, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 20:17, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Check the GIS page for updates. Usually the NHC will release the best track a few days or weeks before they get the TCR out. Supportstorm (talk) 20:59, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

NSIDC NIMBUS satellite images

Hey there Supportstorm, another question on source data. A friend of mine recently noticed that you've been able to find images of tropical cyclones via the NIMBUS data recovery project. To be frank, we're currently working on the Atlantic hurricane reanalysis with the National Hurricane Center and we've had a lot of difficulty finding the old NIMBUS images. Although we can't use them quantitatively (i.e. Dvorak) they're great for getting an idea of what the system actually looked like and if the reanalyzed intensity seems appropriate.

It appears that you've already uploaded a few for 1970 in the West Pacific and I was hoping that you knew how to search through the database effectively. It would be invaluable to the project and we'd greatly appreciate your assistance. Thanks in advance!

Best regards, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 01:24, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

NASA Reverb Echo is the service that gives you the option to search time and area of Nimbus data; however, I'm not sure if it is up to date to include the new digitized data. On a side note I think it is really cool that you are involved with the reanalysis effort. It's something that I want to do after I get through with college. Tropical Storm Ana

You recently uploaded File:Ana May 9 2015 1540Z.jpg. I appreciate the contribution, but there is one problem. After today, there will probably be more images uploaded, but because you didn't include a leading zero (like File:Ana May 09 2015 1540Z.jpg), files will not properly sort, so File:Ana May 10 2015 XXXXZ.jpg will be sorted before the file you just uploaded if/when it is created even though this (future) image would have been chronologically created after it. Ask if you need me to clarify. Dustin (talk) 18:16, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

Oh, sorry, I didn't see that I had already brought this up earlier. Dustin (talk) 00:07, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

How did you get the file you uploaded to be so small while the one I uploaded over doubled in size? Thanks. Dustin (talk) 00:00, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Also, sorry to ask so many questions, but what are you specifically doing when you say in your summaries that you are correcting radiance? Is there an action with the editor you are using which corrects radiance somehow? Thank you. Dustin (talk) 00:09, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm just lowering the dynamic range of contrast so that highlights are not over bright with Photoshop. This makes images from Worldview look similar to the gallery counterpart. As with the smaller file size, there's no need to have a file from Worldview saved at the highest quality since there is already heavy jpeg compression evident when you download an image from that site anyway. Saving at a "high" setting is adequate and drastically reduces file size without a noticeable lost of image quality. Supportstorm (talk) 04:10, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

please help! i have a mistake!

um, Supportstorm, please add the name Soudelor on my mistaked picture file called 2015-08-01 0330Z.jpg. - Nino Marakot talk 02:00, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Supportstorm for adding the name Soudelor. Thank you. i'm appreciated you, Supportstorm! - Nino Marakot talk 10:00, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

No problem! Supportstorm (talk) 12:43, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

One mistake again, Supportstorm. i have a mistake on Vongfong Oct 10 2014 0415Z.jpg. you can see on description that what i want to edit on this file. - Nino Marakot (talk) 15:53, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

i like your Geotiff picture quality!

Supportstorm, i just really appreciated you, that your Geotiff quality image is beautiful! thanks for the Geotiff quality image, Supportstorm! - Nino Marakot (talk) 7:18, 22 August 2015 (PHT)

Thanks! If you want you can check out NASA's Natural Hazards page for more. They'll sometimes add Geotiffs of MODIS images which is where I got the Atsani image. Supportstorm (talk) 02:34, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
The file size is wrong. can you exact it or download the original Geotiff on the NASA Earth Observatory. Thanks! - Nino Marakot (talk) 12:05 P.M, 13 October 2015 (PTC)

Storm Desmond

Hi there,

Could you make a track map for the Storm Desmond wikipedia article please, as you have with Storms Abigail and Barney so far? If you want to wait until it has dissipated, rather than updating it as it goes along, then that would also be fine. A track map for Storm Clodagh on the 2015–16 UK and Ireland windstorm season wikipedia page would also be appreciated. Thankyou! Buttons0603 (talk) 10:26, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

I've already made them. Clodagh Desmond Supportstorm (talk) 16:37, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Hurricane Gilma

Hi, Supportstorm. Could you generate an image of 1994's Hurricane Gilma at it's peak intensity? I feel that its only image in here is kinda bad. Thanks. ABC paulista (talk) 21:13, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Well, Supportstorm, You are right in the file. It was nice to crop the missing data, but I just pass by on the missing data, but it was the southwesterly winds that Lionrock enhances. Hope you understand. - Nino Marakot (talk) 03:02, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
