Hello, Suomipoika~commonswiki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Finnish pronunciation files

[edit]

Hello, thanks a lot for uploading Finnish pronunciation. I have some remarks for your uploads: please be careful about lower- and upper-case in words: Fi-marraskuu.ogg is ok, but Fi-Marraskuu.ogg is wrong.

Would you add license to your files on Russian Wikibooks? Some of these files are missing on Commons, and I cannot move them because they don't have specified license. Thanks, --Derbeth talk 21:14, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your interest and the comments. I'll take the lower-upper case issue in account in the future and will add license to ru.wikipedia.org. And if not possible (like it was at the time of the uploads) I'll just submit new copies of the files here. Suomipoika (talk) 00:05, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fast answer. When it comes to the above message from a bot about missing categories - it's because I removed audio files I marked as duplicates from categories. You don't have to care about them, because they should be soon deleted. By the way, are you native Finnish speaker? --Derbeth talk 09:47, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am a native Finnish speaker. Regarding the missing files. I had a look at them on Russian wikibooks, and remembered, why I did not copy all of them. Some of the phrases are just spoken examples of a grammar book or other material that does not have meaning without the context. And the context does not exist in Wikimedia material other than ru.wikibooks. Suomipoika (talk) 22:33, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Days of week from Wednesday (b:ru:File:Fi-Keskiviikko.ogg) are missing on Commons. Maybe also another useful words - I can't say, I don't know Finnish at all. I took a look at a random file from [1] and found b:ru:File:Fi-Maito.ogg - "milk". For me it's certainly useful.

If you have time, you can obviously upload these files to Commons on your own, you don't have to wait for me ;-) --Derbeth talk 22:55, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any tool that can help me detect what files are missing in commons that are in ru.wikibooks ? Suomipoika (talk) 03:56, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately not. You have to look at every file from the list I gave you and check if it is in Category:Finnish pronunciation. I think it's not very hard, because there is not lots of these files. --Derbeth talk 06:31, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
