Wikimedia Commons has a specific scope
[edit]
Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.
If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding. Sdrtirs (talk) 05:33, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Gargoyle Mechanique logo
[edit]Hello! I saw your email and I'm glad you want to understand why your image was deleted and how to make things right. You said:
Hi
I started a wikipedia page about an historical arts collective that I was a principal member of.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gargoyle_Mechanique
I had created a logo for the collective (many years ago)
The logo is my own. There is no copyright.
I uploaded the logo to wikipedia commons as suggested by the wikipedia information, and then placed it on my page about the collective.
Now I recieve a notice that the logo was withdrawn due to copyright violation.
Can you help me get through this obstacle? I apologize for being inexperienced with the wikipedia process and so busy with my other businesses that I cannot do much studying of wikipedia.
THANK YOU!!
-- Steve ( aka stvjns)
Here is what I can say:
- The image above was deleted by licensing rules that apply on logos (it is requested that they are in a simple design).
- This logo is for a laboratory which owns the logo's copyright. So, who owns the logo is GARGOYLE MECHANIQUE LABORATORY 28 Avenue B, New York NY 10003. When you created the logo for the collective, you transfered your rights for the laboratory.
- To use this logo on Commons, Gargoyle Mechanique Laboratory has to make a written permission to send to OTRS system with the license that the logo is released. If the permission is verified, then the logo can be available on Commons.
I hope that I explained it well to you and I answered all your questions. For more help, I'll be available. Regards, Sdrtirs (talk) 21:49, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:15, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Stvjns. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Stvjns~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
